Getting Wilder Harry Howard Jr. Sports Editor ODU Football head coach Bobby Wilder won't be leaving the program anytime soon after signing a five-year contract extension on March 31. The Monarch football team has a record of 67-30 during Wilder's eight-year tenure and last season was the most successful ever ending with a 24-20 victory over Eastern Michigan at the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl.
"No one is more qualified or better suited to lead ODU’s football program for the foreseeable future than Bobby Wilder. We are fortunate to have his passion, loyalty and longevity. I know everyone within the Hampton Roads community is looking forward to these next five years together,” ODU Director of Athletics Dr. Wood Selig said. Monarch football's 10-3 record this past season was the third ten win season in Wilder's career. He, however, isn't the only one on his
staff receiving an extension. Seven assistants on his staff will receive two-year contracts. Under Wilder's new contract extension, his annual salary is now $650,000. “I am excited and grateful to sign this contract as I enter my 11th year as the head coach of Old Dominion. We are focused on the process of improving as a program as we enter the 2017 season. I am very proud of all the players, coaches, staff, administrators, faculty and
12th Monarchs that have worked to achieve a 67-30 record in our eight years of football at ODU. We will work together to continue to bring value every day to the university as people, students and program," Wilder said. The contract includes an annual raise if the team wins seven or more games in a season. With seven wins next season, Wilder's contract will increase to 675,000 a year. see WILDER, page C1
Lil Uzi Vert: Unchained
'Beautiful Boxer' Maggie Giordano Contributing Writer Understanding obstacles facing those who are transgender can be difficult for many around the world. The LGBT community has fought many battles to help educate those individuals who do not see eye-to-eye with the community, leading to more people expressing their preferred sexual orientation in the U.S. every day. The Office of Counseling Services held a film screening on March 30 for “Under the Lens: Explorations in Queer Cinema." The goal of the event was to help shape student perspective on the transgender community. The showing of “The Beautiful Boxer” started a little after 5 p.m. in Webb Center. “The Beautiful Boxer” is an Ekachai Uekrongtham film about a transgender boxer in Thailand and is based on the true story of the kick boxer Pariinya Charoenphol. The film explains the hardships she faced during her life leading up to her sex change. Also known as “Toom,” Charoenphol recalls her journey from when she discovered that she wanted to be a woman to the moment her parents signed off on papers to approve her surgery. She encounters ridicule and alienation throughout her past and later during her years in boxing camp. The movie shows how difficult it was for her to be in such a masculine sport and how she used her femininity to gain popularity as a boxer. see BOXER, page A4
Destiny Webb Contributing Writer Trap artist Lil Uzi Vert showed love to ODU this past Friday with an explosive performance at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. At only 22 years old, the young rap star is making a name for himself as one of the leading artists in today’s hip-hop game. Born Symere Woods in Philadelphia, the rapper’s sound is heavily
influenced by Atlanta trap music. Known as a “mumble rapper,” he among other rap artists like Lil Yachty and Playboi Carti have caused controversy in the hip-hop community for their rapping style. Mumble rapping refers to rappers saying “yeah” and “aye” multiple times in a song, being hard to understand and not being profoundly lyrical. “I tell myself that I’m not going to go over 80. I say like 79 'yeahs'
and it works,” he joked during an interview with XXL. He also said that adding “yeah” makes everything rhyme, no matter what it is. Whether one likes his music or not, they can’t deny he is making his presence known in the music industry. Lil Uzi also embraces other styles outside of hip-hop and even refers to himself as a “rock star,” which he proved to be Friday night. Whether a rapper or a rocker,
every accomplished artist needs a strong opening act, and senior Jesse Boone, known by his stage name Huey Supreme, was the perfect fit debuting his talents on The Ted stage, making him the first ODU student to ever do so. His sound contrasts Uzi's, containing fast-paced rhymes and neo-soul undertones. see UZI, page B1

‘The Beautiful Boxer’ Exploring International Perspectives on Gender Continued from front Thailand is known for being very accepting of transgender individuals. A majority of the culture believes they are wise because of the skills and knowledge obtained living as both man and woman. “Thailand is very unique in a way because we are a very conservative country. At the same time, with something like this, the country is very open,” OIR Interim Assistant Director for International Initiatives, Rachawan, Wongtrirat, said. “Kathoey” is a term in Thailand that refers to a transgender indi-
vidual. The words used to describe members of the LGBT community in Thailand greatly differ from those in America. A “Lady Boy” refers to someone who dresses as a woman but has male genitalia, while a “Tom Boy” is a woman who dresses as a man but has female genitalia. Transgender women can also be referred to as “Secondary Female” in the country. “We need to gain more awareness on trans issues around the world because I think we see so much in the media about our western lens. I think it is important to think about transgender in that international perspective,” Counseling Services
Psychologist Dr. Alex Dryden said. Snacks were provided to attendees along with hand-held stress balls in the shape of Big Blue’s paw. A discussion ensued after the movie to discuss thoughts and perspectives about the film in an open and supportive atmosphere. Dryden plans to explore other countries in the next year to compare how different cultures experience gender expression. For more information on his research, call the Office of Counseling Services at 757638-4401.

Life After College Strome Alumni Tell Their Stories
Jade Dixon Contributor Writer Graduation can be bittersweet. It feels amazing to finally be done with school, but the reality that you are now in “the real world” hits quickly. When it’s time to leave college, many students worry that they will not successfully find a job. On March 21, the university’s chapter of the American Marketing Association, or Strome Marketers, presented an alumni panel discussion in Constant Hall. The purpose of the event was to let Strome college graduates speak to students about what life has been like since they graduated. AMA chapter advisor and marketing professor, Michelle Carpenter, expressed delight in her former students who took time out of their busy schedules to help students network and prepare what is to come after they walk across the stage. Alumni discussed the ups and downs of life as a graduate and what it is like being in “the real world.”
Guests included Chris Jenkins, Victorian Diersen Zivic, Emmyrose Khan, Chelsea Davenport, Samantha Kleintank and Kassandra Kidman, all recent graduates spanning from 2012 to 2016. Carpenter introduced each participant and let them briefly speak about the challenges they have experienced and learned. She then began the discussion with the question on most students minds. “What advice would you give students who are about to graduate?” Carpenter asked. “Be open to new opportunities. I did not think I would like the job I have currently, but now I love what I do,” Zivic said. Zivic started her life as a graduate with a position at a company her family runs. She slowly realized that it was not the job she truly wanted and decided to look elsewhere. She landed a job at Merrill Lynch a month later, after running into one of their representatives at a social event. Davenport had a similar experi-
The Mace & Crown
ence, leaving a job that was not suited for her and later ending up at a job she knew little about. “While I was working at ODU Athletics, I was also working at YMCA working with teenagers and raging hormones were not fun at all. I quit and was unemployed for four months. I applied to any job that looked interesting, mainly on LinkedIn and Indeed, and came across a marketing position, which I knew little about, but I was willing to learn. Luckily, I got the job and I am happy now,” Davenport said. Students attend these types of events to prepare for what life will be like after graduation and to get an idea of potential situations they could also face. These stories help put current students at ease so that they don’t feel obligated to accept the first job they are offered once they leave school. To learn more about the events that the Strome Marketers hold on campus or about joining the organization, visit their Monarch Link or Facebook pages.

• A one-year term limit for the office of the Chief Justice and Associate Justices was passed. Whomever takes the position will keep it for one year from the moment that they are sworn in or until the current session of SGA ends, unless they are removed or voluntarily leave. • The "Reserve Seat Process and Standards Amendments Bill" was passed, which states that if a senate seat is needed to represent a certain student demographic, instead of a possible vote that could table the seat indefinitely, a petition can be instituted with 100 or more valid signatures to reopen the vote for the reserve seat. • The “SGA Elections Commission Amendment Bill of 2016-2017” was passed, which amends the Election Commission bylaws. Now “only four applicants for each position will be selected as candidates.” Applications for positions must include two nominations from SGA members and potential candidates must attend one Executive Board meeting, one Senate meeting and shadow their prospective position for four hours. • Senate Bill 20, “Point-of-Contact,” was voted on to have a second reading. The bill would require student organizations to have their consultations done within a three-month period. • Senate Bill 21, “Stipend Bill,” was voted on to have a second reading. The bill would add language to the current Stipend Bill to better explain the tiers and their responsibilities. • Resolution 8, “Pots and Pans,” was voted on to have a second reading. The bill would provide pots and pans for students to use in residence halls on campus. Resident Assistants would have students checkout cooking materials and returned within 48 hours. Many who attended were confused about who would be responsible for making sure the pots and pans were sterilized after each use. Senate meetings are held every Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the Board of Visitors Room located in Webb Center and are open to students. After attending three sessions, students are encouraged to apply to be a senator for one of the SGA committees.

LIL UZI VERT BRINGS ‘LUV’ TO ODU Continued From Front From Portsmouth, the 22-year-old began rapping in 2013 and has been working hard at his craft ever since. His largest performance prior was a crowd of 350 people at The NorVa. The Ted Constant Convocation Center’s 9,000 capacity meant a huge difference in crowd size for him, but if there were any feelings of nervousness, they went unnoticed. His confidence and positive energy won the crowd over and he was a vibrant start to the show. Once the crowd warmed up, Lil Uzi took to the stage beginning with one
@maceandcrown
of his most popular songs, “Do What I Want,” and everyone went insane. Knowing all of the words, the crowd sang along and danced to the music as Uzi jumped around with high energy. Hyping the crowd up even more, Uzi ran off the stage and into the audience, rapping and dancing with them, creating a huge frenzy within the stands. Students rushed towards the artist to take Snapchats and photos, and Uzi embraced all of it without flinching as he sang, “Top.” Losing his chain in the process of the commotion, Uzi said whoever found it got to keep it. Assuming it was probably very expensive, whoever
@maceandcrown
picked up that icy chain is in for a very large payout at the pawn shop. Seemingly unphased by the incident, Uzi got back on stage and continued his performance. Uzi went on to perform a few more songs, including his part in the ever so popular song “Bad and Boujee” by Migos. Fans were elated as he premiered new cuts “Die Today” and “For Real.” Ending a quarter to ten, a few people were disappointed the show was so short, but for less than $20 a ticket, it seemed fair. In the end, students were pleased with the show and Old Dominion atmosphere was lit for the night.

Meeting Big NyQuil Richard Hertz Contributing Writer
The Savior of Crunk
2006 suffered some heavy losses. The likes of Steve Irwin and Chris Penn were taken much too soon. Arguably, the most tragic loss of all was the art of crunk music. The rap genre that once reigned supreme in the clubs and basement parties of Atlanta gained confidence like Icarus, flying too close to the sun before crashing to its death in a fiery splendor. Names like Lil Jon, E-40 and the Ying Yang Twins suddenly became irrelevant, and crunk quietly vanished. Enter Big NyQuil–a 45-year-old artist from the Deep Creek area of Chesapeake who is working day and night to bring crunk back from the grave, refusing to let the art form he loves become extraneous. NyQuil, like mold, thrives in a dark, dank corner of a recording studio, where he shared plans of a new mixtape, “Tha RezErection,” slated to drop on April 20. With bloodshot eyes hiding behind cheap sunglasses and half of his face covered in a bushy beard, the rapper discussed his admiration of his craft, saying in a raspy voice, “crunk is the music that has inspired many, many movements, one of which is mine. I’m pretty sure Tupac said that.” NyQuil says that listeners can expect between five and eight tracks on his upcoming drop. Other tracks will be released as singles on SoundCloud. It’s important to note that Big NyQuil is not safe for work. In true crunk fashion, the young artist taps into vulgarities and slurs that haven’t been heard in over a decade. While Ol’ Dirty Bastard may have said, “WuTang is for the children,” Big NyQuil is certainly not. “Tha RezErection’s” first track, “Work Release,” is an anthem bringing back familiar party sounds listeners haven’t heard since the days of Bubba Sparxx, with the opening lyrics, “y’all motherf---ers thought crunk was dead? Well, guess what? I married that b----, and I brought that s--- back!” The track is described by
NyQuil as being a “direct response to that club s--- Rae Sremmurd and Migos is making.” Some of his lyrics take a darker tone, speaking of violence and disrespect, but NyQuil ensures critics, “It’s a joke!” Regardless of terrifying rhymes, the melodic keys and pulsing beat will have even the staunchest analysts tapping their feet. While NyQuil might be an outsider when it comes to the type of rap he’s reviving, he’s certainly no stranger to the ways of the industry, with several other rappers he openly has a problem with. “First off, I got beef with Kendrick Lamar, because he thinks he can lead a movement by himself, but that’s not what we need. Crunk is what we need. But my biggest beef, easily, is Chance The Rapper. Chance comes from a similar background, recording in his bedroom, even though my studio is way better. He whined about how ‘I want to go the Grammys,’ and like, oh cool, you did that, but mark my words, here is what I say in this room: I will bring world peace through crunk music. You will see me as the next president of the United States of America. Big NyQuil 2024, because Trump will have two terms.” Big NyQuil was happy to dive deeper into political talk, saying that he sees the U.S. adopting a threeparty system in the near future, with the third major party being the Crunk Party, of which he is determined to be the forefather. “People always ask if I’m liberal or conservative. Am I a libertarian or a totalitarian? B----, I exceed all of these isms. Crunk has the best fiscal and social politics.” NyQuil went on to say that “crunk will defeat ISIS.” Not only a political trailblazer, NyQuil is starting new trends within rap, coining terms such as “run up” and “brush my toofies.” Describing E-40 and Aesop Rock as influences that are “walking thesauruses,” the rapper doesn’t shy away from declaring that he still has a stronger vocabulary than both combined. He is also
The Mace & Crown
changing the cultural aspects of the crunk genre. “In the old days of crunk, people drank Hennessey and smoked sour diesel rolled in swishers. Now, we drinking piss-warm Jose Cuervo and smoking K2 spice out of bubblers.”
With all of these ambitions, NyQuil does know one thing for certain: “The RezErection” is coming. Around the time of the mixtape’s drop, NyQuil says a documentary is being produced about his journey, and to watch out for that as well.
Big NyQuil may have a ways to go, but he has his eyes set on the prize. “This is real life s--- man. Ghetto ain’t hard, ghetto is hell. You can’t make this s--- up. But I know one thing, and that’s that I won’t let crunk die. Crunk ain’t dead, it’s alive and thriving.”

Monarch Style
Four Spring Essentials and How to Style Them
Courtesy JessaKae.com
Kim Bering Staff Writer Since April showers bring May flowers, your wardrobe needs to be equipped with fashionable fundamentals for the upcoming weather. The rainy days, exams, concerts and beach trips provide a long list of pieces to buy in order to be ready for warm weather. For the sake of saving cash, buying the right pieces from budget friendly brands help students stay prepared and presentable. Spring just arrived, so rain boots are the first essential item to store away for when you need them. Obviously, Hunter rain boots’ stylish variety easily tempts the wallet, but the over $100 prices do not. That’s why Overstock.com’s large assortment of
Courtesy My Style Vita
styles provide colorful or simple rain boots predominantly under $50. Pick from the habitual shaft or ankle rain boots! Styling an outfit around rain boots can be fun, particularly if they are brightly colored or patterned. Jessica Camerata of popular fashion blog My Style Vita styled her army green wellies with a striped dress, neck scarf, lapelled rain coat and red lips of course. The posh approach to rain apparel is easily replicated. The second essential item for warmer weather is a floral wrap dress. This trend’s comfy versatility and unique style lasts all spring, summer and even a little into fall. Yes, Free People and Anthropologie’s choices are undeniably perfect, but not student budget friendly. But Amazon’s
The Mace & Crown
selection surprisingly offers a vast amount of inexpensive and adorable wrap dresses. Pick a price range or a brand and search for the perfect dress! Styling a floral wrap dress has the potential to look simple and chic or posh and fancy. Pair a floral dress with a denim jacket and some neat sneakers for a casual approach. This style is perfect for comfy class attire. With the same dress, you can ditch the sneakers and replace them with a delicate heel and clutch, a look composed for a fun date night outfit. The third item to get is a ball cap. This trend has been going strong for several months now, so why not hop on that trend train? Baseball caps pitch the suitable amount of casual street style for regular school days (no

pun intended). Most of them can be purchased for around $20 or under, particularly the ones at H&M. This store sells a multitude of colors, patterns, fabrics and printed caps. The casual baseball cap trend is not only relatively cost effective and diverse in options, but also masks bad hair days. They go with denim, yoga pants, plain T-shirts, 8 a.m. classes and just about anything else. Every student needs one for an impromptu casual outfit to throw on during exams or test days. You cannot lose with a ball cap. Rompers are the fourth must-buy for this season. The effortlessness of rompers could be the easiest outfit to possibly assemble, because one romper is all you need for a solid outfit. Lulu’s online shop sells dozens

of varieties of fabulous rompers, but can be slightly pricy. For a more inexpensive approach, Charlotte Russe also offers adorable options for half the price. Accessories can spruce up rompers for a more complete posh look, but they don’t need to be styled meticulously. That’s part of the fun in rompers—they can be dressed up or down. Layered necklaces, gladiator sandals, kimonos or sun hats could be styled with them, or they can simply be left alone. Every wardrobe needs one or two fun rompers. With those four ideal fundamentals, spring and summer fashion can be casual or chic because of the fun versatility of warm weather apparel.

Trey Songz Hits With New Album The singer-songwriter, actor and Petersburg, Virginia native releases his highly polished, seventh studio album showcasing seductive crooning and masterful use of musical control. The once introverted, now turned R&B, hip-hop and soul extrovert reaches out once again on a near hour-long journey with melancholic, conflicting introspection giving us clues into his personal narrative. Adam Flores Editor-in-Chief As a child, Tremaine Aldon Neverson didn’t have a musical dream. Though others around him realized his talent and sound, it wasn’t until age 14 that he discovered his own musical prowess. "Singing wasn't a reality for me, until other people started noticing I sounded good." At age 32 and more than 14 million albums sold, that reality for Trey Songz–raised as a military brat by his mother and stepfather–is deeply engrained with fans and the music world. “Tremaine The Album” is chock-full of signature beats, grooves and lyrical connotations that reflect
the artist’s own trials and perhaps, coming-of-age sensibilities. Prior to dropping “Tremaine” back on March 24, releasing tracks such as “Nobody Else But You,” “Animal” and “Playboy” primed listeners for the 15-song continuation story since July 2014’s Billboard 200 No. 1 debut, “Trigga.” The near three-year break sees Songz continue his musical trek with other new cuts such as “She Lovin It” and “Come Over.” “Animal” lays the groundwork for his seductive romp as he asserts, “Gonna get to, get to your forbidden fruit / Turn the bed into a jungle.” “Come Over” exemplifies his bedroom swagger as he appeals, “Come over / Even though we fell apart, don't you even start, girl you still got my
heart.” Concise and clever lyrical motion drive the themes of “Tremaine.” Backed by infectious beats and perfectly balanced musical accompaniments, fans should be pleased by the emotionally charged permeating sonic textures and mood the new album instills. Fellow Virginian and frequent collaborator MIKExANGEL makes a guest appearance on the lone track, “Games We Play.” At the time of printing, Drake’s “More Life” prepares to continue holding the No. 1 spot for a second week on the Billboard 200 chart. “Tremaine The Album” looks to be the only contender to take over the top spot.

Atlanta progressive metal quartet Mastodon unleash a seventh epic possessing their signature cross-breeding of rock genre soundscapes and influences. The serial tracks culminate the narrative of a desert wanderer in possession of his death sentence. The inspiration came from the band’s off-stage story of family members’ diagnosed with cancer. Themes of survival and death pervade the new album’s conceptual voice. Mastadon will embark on a U.S. tour from April into May with supporting acts Eagles of Death Metal and Russian Circles.
It’s been four years since the country music superstar released his last studio project, “Love Will.” There’s a lot going on with Adkins’ newest release. Produced by Mickey Jack Cones (Joe Nichols, Dustin Lynch), “Something’s Going On” contains songs written by some of Nashville’s finest songwriters, including Shane McAnally, Casey Beathard, Tyler Farr and Craig Campbell. Tour support began in February and will continue through August. With each ticket purchased, Trace is giving away a copy of “Something’s Going On.”
Contemporary Christian music veterans MercyMe present their ninth studio release. The concept of “Lifer” asks what’s it like to live as followers of Christ that are committed for life? Frontman Bart Millard revealed “Even If” is a song reflecting the trials of chronic illness within his diabetic, 15-year-old son, Sam. “This song is a declaration to God that even if He went silent and never said another word, He's still worthy to be praised, and He's our greatest hope in the midst of the trial.”
In 2010 at age 10, her musical gift of voice and song on “America’s Got Talent” secured her a second place finish in the show’s fifth season. Her new rendering, “Two Hearts,” is a two-disc offering: the first consists of 10 classical crossover selections and the second, a 5-track pop EP exploring new musical territory alongside today’s pop music vocal divas. "I'm not going to get rid of my classical voice, because that's my roots, that's what I love the most."
The English electronic music duo have released their seventh studio album continuing their aesthetic of Alison Goldfrapp’s soft, breathy soprano voice and Will Gregory's multi-layered synthesiser/string arrangements. The new record encompasses a direct approach, lyrically while continuing to assume new identities. Heavy use of synthesizers in their musical sound resembles the synthesis of different genres infused from track to track. Identity crisis? Quite the contrary. “Silver Eye” signifies a wide palate of flavors that keeps the vibe of unpredictability comfortable and in control.

Michael Abney Digital Editor The ever-changing weather the past month has created an outstanding amount of daily annoyances from not knowing what to wear to trying to accurately predict when to bring an umbrella. Bipolar weather in past months has been a continuing topic of conversation about constant fluctuations moving within two standard deviations: above average in the beginning of the month, then dropping below two standard deviations halfway through the month. Hopefully, as we move into spring, we can expect stable weather patterns.

‘Chi-Raq’
2015 | R | 127 min. The city of Chicago, in media, has been given the nickname of “ChiRaq” due to the fact that it’s violence and gun related deaths outmatch the ones in war zones. To famed director Spike Lee, the city of Chicago is a beast that is fed by the wars between African-American men and the violence that proceeds that war. It’s this conceit that inspired Lee to create his latest complex and risqué film, “Chi-Raq.” Taking inspiration from the Greek play “Lysistrata” by Aristophanes, the film follows a modern-day war between two gangs: the Spartans and the Trojans. Their fighting and violent tendencies in war come to a head in
their community when their fighting inadvertently causes the death of a little girl. The sudden tragedy inspires the girlfriend of one of the gang leaders to form a protest that could put an end to the fighting. The girlfriend, Lysistrata (Teyonah Parris), develops a plan to get all women to hold out sex from the men until they decide to make peace. This plan quickly gets attention from the media and spirals into a worldwide phenomenon. Borrowing heavily from the play, Lee even decides to utilize the rhyme scheme that exists in the play and use it in the film. Boasted by Lee’s wonderfully unique filmmaking style, “Chi-Raq”
is a risk-taking film where a majority of those risks pay off. The Greek theatrical elements mixed with satirical elements give the film a bite that’s going to be hard to shake off. Along with the clever techniques delivered by Lee, “Chi-Raq” also has powerful performances from Jennifer Hudson, Nick Cannon and John Cusack that only sweeten the deal. Admittedly, much of the risks in “Chi-Raq” make the film feel uneven. However, there is still a lot in the film brilliant and unforgettable. This film is available on Amazon Prime.

A master of the “slice of life” narrative, Richard Linklater is more preoccupied with dynamics and interaction rather than plot. The characters Linklater creates are colorful and unique in ways that can carry an entire movie and keep his audience engrossed the whole way through. This brand of filmmaking shines through with his latest film, “Everybody Wants Some!!” The film opens with Jake (Blake Jenner), a college freshman, arriving to campus for the first time. As an athlete, Jake is sent to live in a house on campus that is filled with other athletes, some new like him and others
who are seasoned collegiate athletes. Initially having a hard time adjusting, Jake quickly adapts to the groups' quirky ways and begins his journey into the college lifestyle. Taking place the weekend before classes start, viewers take a back seat and watch as Jake and his teammates drink, smoke and party their way through the weekend. As we get to know the colorful cast of characters and learn their quirks, the misadventures these young men face start a path of self-realization and reflection. Anyone who is familiar with Linklater’s work (“Dazed and Confused” and “Boyhood”) know that each of
his films have a sense of fluidity and realism. This basically means that Linklater tends to drift away from plot and narrative in order to explore themes of life and individualism. “Everybody Wants Some!!” is a perfect example of that storytelling as it is both ecstatically full of character and exuberant charm. Although aimless in its plot, “Everybody Wants Some!!” is a fun and introspective look at college life and the young joys of freedom. This film is available on Amazon Prime.
‘Come and Find Me’ 2016 | R | 112 min.
David (Aaron Paul), a graphic designer, has always seen his relationship with Claire (Annabelle Wallis) as a happy one. Never being able to sight a problem, David is left perplexed when Claire one day just goes missing. Not knowing if Claire is alive or dead, David struggles to find any answers for her whereabouts. His search inadvertently leads David to details about Claire’s life that contrast with everything he has known about her. Upon learning these details, David finds himself in the crosshairs of dangerous people who are also looking for Claire. Be-
fore those people can find her, David has to track down Claire to protect her and find out who she really is. Any of this plot sound familiar? Well, that’s where the problems with “Come and Find Me” begin to surface. It’s certainly an interesting concept and can be done well, but the script feels watered down by tropes set from other movies of its kind and never tries to make an identity for itself. It’s possible for a movie to be unoriginal and interesting, but the film only succeeds to be unoriginal and painfully dull. Most disappointing about this film
The Mace & Crown
is the involvement of an actor like Aaron Paul. Anyone familiar with his work on “Breaking Bad” knows that Paul can give a powerful, charismatic and layered performance. None of that, though, is in “Come and Find Me” where Paul is sleepwalking through the entire film. It honestly feels like he took an Ambien cocktail before jumping in front of the camera. There is a lot of promise to “Come and Find Me,” but the film struggles to be more than anything but serviceable. This film is available on Netflix.

PAY FOR PLAY Lady Monarch Tennis Player Holly Hutchinson on Paying Student Athletes
Holly Hutchinson Contributing Writer
The life of a student-athlete encompasses every possible challenge life can throw. Most students will tell you how stressful it is to manage work, school and social relationships. However, student-athletes have to split their time due to sporting commitments such as daily training, game days, meetings and travel days. According to USA Today College, the NCAA has regulations that are intended to limit training to 20 hours per week. Very few student-athletes, however, report only practicing 20 hours per week. According to a 2011 NCAA survey, Division I football players averaged 43 hours per week. Many students attend a university to play sports, but paying athletes could actually keep them there. College basketball allows players to declare themselves eligible for the NBA draft after their freshman season. In football, you can declare yourself eligible for the NFL after your junior year of college. The incentive of a paycheck draws many students from poor backgrounds towards their professional goals. Consider the coaches and their staff’s high salaries. The head coach of Duke men’s basketball team, Mike Krzyzewski, gets paid roughly $9 million a year, excluding benefits. A portion of this could easily be used to pay their athletes. The New York Times stated, “In
2011, $53.4 million was the combined salary of NCAA Division I football coaches. What was the combined salary of the players? $0. The workers are supposed to be content with a scholarship that does not even cover the full cost of attending college.” Many of these athletes are on scholarship, which pays for their tuition and housing in most cases. Stipends average between $2,000 and $5,000 annually. Pride and school spirit can all be traced back to university sports programs. Harvard and Yale are regarded as some of the best universities in the country, but what brings all the students, alumni and staff together? Spoiler alert: It's not the engineering program. It's the football and basketball games that bring everyone together after a big win. Even smaller sports such as lacrosse and soccer can easily rally a school together. Alumni, especially the wealthier ones, come back to the university during a game and donate their money to see their teams flourish. There is nothing that comes close to the near-spiritual experience of putting on your school colors and going through the lows and highs of a game with your team. This is all brought to the school by one type of student: athletes. In reality, student-athletes are basically working full-time jobs. While universities get richer, athletes are missing out on their pay day.

CUTTING THE CORD Cable Alternatives
Audra Reigle Assistant Technology Editor It's probably safe to assume that you’re a broke college student or at least one on a fixed budget, and you want something to watch. Cable TV might be available to you, perhaps for free if you're in one of the dorms, but cable TV is limited and is filled with ads. Fortunately, there are many streaming service alternatives available, like Netflix and Hulu. Here is a rundown of the most popular streaming options available for the budget-student. AMC is preparing to launch a streaming service of their own, according to The Verge. It is meant to be “an ad-free subscription video service that would be exclusively
available to cable TV customers.” Users would pay an extra $4.99 to $6.99 per month in addition to their normal TV bill. So right away, it's not quite as appealing as a streaming service that has only one price. The service “could feature exclusive ‘digital-only spinoff shows of existing programs." But AMC’s soon to be launched streaming service isn’t the only one out there, and they're all stealing subscribers from traditional TV companies. “Pay-TV companies lost nearly 800,000 video subscribers last year, almost twice as many as a year before,” according to the LA Times. When you’re a college student on a budget, paying upwards of $100 a month for a service where you’ll only watch a few channels out
of the hundred or so you’ll get isn’t exactly the best use of your money. The draw of streaming services over traditional TV is so strong that the term "cable cutting" has arisen in common parlance to refer to people who outright cancel their cable subscription and exclusively use internet and streaming services. Streaming services have been around since 2008, when Netflix was launched, according to The Guardian. Hulu has their own streaming service, which also started in 2008. Amazon started their Prime Instant Video service in 2011, according to Engadget. Since then, streaming has taken off as a major source of media consumption for many people. The trend shows no signs of slowing down as some services, like Netflix,
have begun transitioning from offering previously-aired content to making their own original content. The future of streaming TV shows could involve “entertainment drugs,” according to Thrillist. The idea stems from a comment Reed Hastings, Netflix CEO, made at a 2016 technology conference where Hastings wondered if the future of streaming could be “pharmacological.” Geoffrey Woo, Nootrobox co-founder and CEO, told Thrillist that “[he] is confident that the human body is the next frontier for technological innovation.” With the growth of streaming services comes the growth of jobs as well. Hulu is planning to create new jobs and offer 24-hour customer service and a live TV on-demand
service, according to the San Antonio Business Journal. The company is planning to open a new customer viewer experience operations headquarters in either San Antonio or Albuquerque, New Mexico by fall 2017. A final decision has not been made on the location, but it is slated to bring 500 jobs to the area. As streaming services grow, their appeal grows as well. Traditional cable TV companies' response to losing subscribers has seemingly been to increase their prices on their remaining subscribers, or impose more limitations. So switching to a good streaming service seems even more paramount as time goes on.
TECH IN A SEC Buy the Internet History of Congress In the wake of the repeal on Obama-era FCC rules that required ISPs to ask for your consent before selling your private information and web browsing histories, a website was created to crowdfund the purchase of the very politicians who passed the repeal. At “searchinternethistory.com,” you can donate money toward “purchasing the Internet histories of all legislators, congressmen, executives, and their families and make them easily searchable,” creator Adam McElhaney said on the site. Once acquired, “Anything they have looked at, searched for, or visited on the Internet will now be available for everyone to comb through.” Perhaps this effort will remind Congress why private internet information should’ve remained private. The Latest in the Fight Over
CLIMATE CHANGE
Brooke Nicholson Contributing Writer There is an enormous amount of debate and discussion about the huge issue surrounding global warming in modern society. Is it purely myth, or stunning reality? American science has heavily pushed the fact that global warming is scientifically evident through statistics and data, while some simply do not believe in these stances about Earth’s rising temperatures. Global warming has passed through American legislation and policy quite a few times–with little results and no one walking away from the issue satisfied with one true answer. While polls have revealed that half of Americans are “seriously
concerned” when it comes to global warming, we still see multiple articles about the rise in temperatures happening every day worldwide. Without a clear and concise policy in place or change happening within American legislation, what are some Americans doing to combat global warming? States throughout the U.S. have vowed to fight for regulations on greenhouse gasses through state policies and laws, such as California and New York. Although large groups and environmentalists vow to continue fighting for regulations and climate change policies, individual people have gone the extra mile to reverse the problem. A viral video on Facebook from October 2016 shows activists live streaming themselves manually shutting down five oil pipelines run-

ning from Canada into the U.S. This group sought immediate environmental solutions to save the Earth from a potential oil spill. Thousands protested the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline from being built, arguing that such an enormous new pipeline project could damage the sacred land it would reside on and irreversibly contaminate local water supply. President Donald Trump has recently ordered the federal government to discontinue fighting against the issue of climate change. Recently signing an executive order to directly oppose the slew of climate change policies enacted by former President Barack Obama throughout his eight-year term, This newest executive order will undo control on power

plants and how they dispose of carbon emissions and waste into the environment. While this may not affect nearly half of the people who do not stand with climate change, for others, it is a step backward in the recognition and solution to the problem surrounding global warming. In wake of this newest anti-climate change order, environmental groups throughout the United States have begun to oppose and act against this harder than ever by taking matters into their own hands. Environmental groups from Colorado have hired lawyers to fight Trump’s newest executive order in court, with Rhea Suh, president of the National Resources Defense council, saying it’s “a senseless act of betrayal of our national interest,” according to Inside Climate

News. Many states and environmentalists have hinted in lawsuits against this order. Environmentalists and scientists are still pushing and working towards everyday changes to help reverse the effects of global warming such as using wind turbines and hybrid cars for alternative energy, recycling plastics and using solar panels, encouraging the population to take action against this order even more than before. Climate change is a heavy topic that has divided America more than once. Scientists and environmentalists around the nation have vowed to continue to oppose this order with solutions for a planet gradually rising in temperature that everyone should be concerned about.

Now Is the Time to Secure Yourself Online Ross Reelachart Technology Editor Now that Congress has voted to kill the rules that would have required home internet and mobile broadband providers (an ISP) to get consumers’ consent before selling their private information and browsing history, Americans will need every tool available to protect their privacy while using the internet. Simply activating the “private browsing” or “incognito mode” on your browser of choice, will not stop an ISP from tracking your web habits. Such modes only stop your browser from remembering what you did. Activities over the network can still be tracked. Here are a few tips and tools to help protect your private information and data from the government and corporations. The simplest tool available is the HTTPS protocol, which some websites already implement. HTTPS au-
thenticates a website and encrypts your activity while visiting. So while an ISP may see you visiting an HTTPS-secured website, they can’t see what you’re doing in it. You can tell if a website uses HTTPS by looking at the URL bar of your browser. The danger of HTTPS is that not every website is secured and not every secured website is completely encrypted. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) provides a free browser extension called “HTTPS Everywhere” that bolsters encryption on any site that offers limited support of HTTPS. There are also more complex tools and services available which offer more privacy, though sometimes at a cost. If you’re willing to pay, a virtual private network (VPN) can be used to encrypt your web activity. An ISP will be able to see that you’re using a VPN, but nothing else. However, a VPN is its own company and you’ll
need to trust that the VPN itself is not logging your activity themselves. It’s advisable to do some research before choosing a VPN service. If you’re tech savvy enough, and willing to possibly sacrifice your internet speeds, Tor is a generally free option that has long been used for encrypted internet activity. Tor is a distributed network created by any volunteers actively using it, where all activity is “bounced” between multiple relays before reaching its intended destination. This hides your activity by masking its true origin since any relay can be located anywhere in the world. There is a Tor browser bundle available for free that encrypts activity within that browser only. There are also a few Tor-enabled routers available for purchase, but they are early products that might need to mature. While HTTPS, VPNs and Tor are basically the only major ways of encrypting your browsing habits,
there are also smaller steps you can take to secure your internet activity, keeping you from being tracked and monitored by predatory corporations and advertisers. The EFF provides a wealth of tools and guides that can help protect you while online. It’s “Panopticlick” service can test to see if your browser has the factors necessary to be “fingerprinted” by third parties. If your browser is a little too easily tracked, you might consider installing the “Privacy Badger” addon which actively blocks third-party tracking tools. For domain owners and website administrators, “Certbot” offers a convenient way to secure your website with HTTPS if you have not already. Finally, the EFF offers an extensive “Surveillance Self-Defense” guide that provides tutorials and software that are useful for online security. These tutorials are also arranged into “playlists” for different groups with
different security needs like LGBT youth, academics, journalists, activists and protesters. One final way to combat ISPs snooping into your private information is to fill your private information stream with noise. "TrackMeNot" is a browser extension created by a NYU researcher and professor that obfuscates your web search history with false leads and searches. While this method doesn't "hide" your data from ISPs, it makes your data less appealing to prying eyes. Given the current administrator, it seems unlikely that your personal online security and privacy will be less important because advertisers, corporations and ISPs need to make money off of your information. So until this administration or the FCC reinstalls the rules it just repealed, or replaces them with something better, be careful on the internet and secure yourself.

With Love, Helga G. Pataki paying homage to Hey Arnoldw
by Briel Felton Please let this be the day you see me through love’s eyes. Shrines of you in my closet lie, my love, my lifeline. I am mad, mad as a Hatter from the pain that pulses inside. I wish I could show you that you’re the reason birds sing to the sun. I can’t help but be mean to you, my begotten love. Oh Arnold, my football head; my love, all in my head. I don’t understand these feelings, so I choose to hate you. Seeing your face in the clouds and on the locket I carry next to my tiny bosom. That cold, metallic locket, encased in gold with your frozen eyes that warm the blood in my toes. My muse, I cower behind corners professing my love with frosted lips into the hallway air where the lockers grab my words before they hit your ears. I watch you walk away again, mad at me, not loving me, never loving me. For instead of kisses, I trip you in the hall. My obsession that I need to love, to hate, to inspire. I need to be mad and mixed up, my yellow haired beast. I believe I am angry because in the dark reaches in my heart, I know you will never whisper my name without death holding it. Like the way I wish to hold you.
