Fire Starters The Women’s Forum of Coastal Virginia Justin L.C. Ross Contributing Writer

On Dec. 8 the first inaugural meeting of the Women’s Forum of Coastal Virginia was held at the Innovation Research Park on campus. As women from all spectrums of the business world, including entrepreneurs, community leaders and business women, came together to discuss the challenges of being a catalyst for change in the modern world. The room was filled with dedicated individuals who, in the words of Lizette D. Arches, sought “to gain inspiration, empowerment, a support network, and encouragement.” The event itself served as a testament to the many individuals, such as

Dan Bell and WVEC television personality Cheryl Tan, who made the event a success. The room itself was filled to capacity and the energy level reached was outmatched only by the enthusiasm shown by each person as they made connections with their fellow business leaders. One such leader in the world of business present at the event was Elizabeth Duncan-Hawker, MBA and President of Red Hawk Strategic Solutions, LLC, a “Business Growth Strategist whose passion is to help businesses and individuals optimize their Strategic Advantage.” Another business leader who was present at the event was Katy Blevins, co-founder of “Modern Femme." This organization provides a support network to women of all ages and seeks

to “equip and empower women from all walks of life to do better and be better, both individually and as a community.” Each of these businesses shares an inspirational story of entrepreneurship, challenge and struggle that often goes beyond the power of words to accurately convey. However, the common theme found in each of these individuals and their businesses could be narrowed down to two words: determination and success. The highlight of the event was the speaker, Angela Reddix, who is both the CEO and co-founder of one of the region’s largest and most famous companies, A Reddix & Associates Inc. (ARDX). This business was chosen by the Obama Administration to assist

with the successful implementation of the Affordable Health Care Act and currently employs 125 associates. The amount of wisdom, knowledge and pure inspiration that were the words spoken by Reddix, who is also a mother, wife and is currently working on her doctorate in business, conveyed a deep sense of meaning to all who were in attendance. “Don’t run away from challenge,” Reddix said. “You can motivate others, you can motivate each other.” This was the story of many in the room, as the struggle of equality for women in the world of business, and the glass ceiling, are still overshadowing realities of modern society. “Have the courage to say yes,” Reddix said. “Take the chance to embrace

the challenge presented to you and even if things didn’t turn out the way you wanted, don’t live with doubt.” Truer words were never spoken under the circumstances, and all those in the audience could feel the depth, sincerity and realism in which she spoke. As the event drew to a close and the speaker answered questions from the audience, a sense of combined renewal in both confidence and zeal was unmistakable amidst all those in attendance. Every person there could reflect with pride on their individual accomplishments and look forward with boldness to a future of their continued charismatic leadership in a world that is shaped by their daily actions.

Dance Away the Stress Petra Rich Contributing Writer

The Counseling and Student Health Services teamed up with the African Student Association to host this years annual Dance Away the Stress. Over 30 students and staff members filled the Hampton and Newport News Rooms of the Webb Center Thursday during activity hour to dance away their end of semester frustrations. The room was with filled with upbeat energy as everyone laughed and tried to keep up with the 10 step routine the ASA’s dance team was teaching. The routine was an African dance with hip-hop flare and was fast-paced. Everyone was broken into groups to practice with ASA team members at their own pace. After practicing in their groups for about half an hour, everyone came to-

gether for the final performance. The final dance was done in three trials to get attendees used to the music before the final product was recorded. The Afro-Simbas coach, Chi-Chi Chinaka, played the music a few times, letting the group get used to the routine, then everyone broke out into their best moves. While the first two trials were a little messy, by the third time even the older staff members had the routine down. Everyone was panting and sweating from the great workout the dance provided. According to members of the Counseling Services, the event was started some years ago by Dr. Thompson, a former professor and counselor, to help students unwind from the stress of finals. The event partners with a different organization every year to have different themed dances. Coach Chinaka is a senior and works

with Student Health Services, which is how ASA got involved with the event this year. “We are so grateful and honored to be able to share our dance with you all,” Chinaka said to the group as the event was wrapping up. The routine was part of a dance the Afro-Simbas perform regularly throughout the year in cultural shows at various colleges and events across Hampton Roads, according to sophomore Haja Sheriff, who is the dance coordinator of the Afro-Simbas. Before students left to head to class, Chinaka had one last request of the group. She gathered everyone to do the latest challenge taking over the internet, the mannequin challenge. After the fast-paced routine they had just done everyone was glad to take a breather and freeze in place for the challenge to be recorded.

'The Hampton Roads Show' Comes to The Ted

Jacie Litz Staff Writer

On Dec. 9, "The Hampton Roads Show" broadcast live outside the Ted Constant Center. First Lady Kate Broderick, Lady Monarch Coach Karen Barefoot and Men’s Coach Jeff Jones were special guests to raise awareness about Coats for Families. Student organizations were encouraged to be part of the audience. After a free hot breakfast, students braved the cold weather. Once outside, students showed university pride while Ted Alexander, the voice of the Monarchs,

announced the show’s title. Big Blue, cheerleaders, Greek organizations, and plenty of student organizations were represented. Students were encouraged to wear their organization’s gear. Co-host of the show, Chris Reckling, spoke next about Coats for Families. "The show has partnered with the university, specifically the Monarch basketball teams, to raise awareness for the charity drive. Coats for Families collects new and gently used coats for people in need within the region. This year coats were collected at basketball games. “It’s a win/win situation.

Erin Sudek Staff Writer To reduce stress during the final week of the semester, the Student Activities Council held a game-show styled event called “Money to Blow” on Dec. 8 in the Webb Center. “I’ve worked with the SAC in the past at the Wildin’ Out event. I’m a music artist and I know this organization does great things. It’ll be a fun, interesting event,” sophomore Roger Njunge said. The SAC funded the event with the fees that goes toward their board. This was the first year they’ve done an event like Money to Blow. “SAC plans all the events on campus, and we haven’t done this kind of event before, but I think people will enjoy it,” Jaiden Earle, senior and special events director of the SAC, said, “We want students to relax a little during their finals and get some money

It’s game day and we can help others out,” Barefoot said when asked about the charity. The women’s basketball team played at 7 p.m. on Dec. 9 and the men’s basketball team played at 8 p.m. on Dec. 10. Both teams faced Virginia Commonwealth University. “It’s a big game. VCU is a big rival, probably our biggest rival. It will be an interesting contest for sure,” Jones said when asked about the upcoming games. Jones also discussed the importance of helping out others when possible and encouraged the audience to bring in coat donations. Broderick also spoke to

Reckling about the university’s involvement with the charity drive. “Old Dominion has generated over a half a billion worth of community service hours and we feel it is part of our DNA to give back to the community. So we see this as a natural partnership,” Broderick said. Broderick also discussed her involvement and helping start the ‘Women’s Iniative Network.’ “This is a group of prominate women in the community who partner with students in educational opportunities and mentorship. We will take our mentees and work with

Money to Blow

them on our individual community efforts.” When attendees brought in coat donations, they received $5 off admission to basketball games. Reckling also announced that the first 50 people that brought in a coat donation also received a Kent Bazemore bobble-head. Reckling said that Coats for Families donations can be given anytime at any Southside ‘Albano Cleaners’ locations or any ‘Peninsula Cho’s Cleaners’ locations. For more information about donations and distribution go to WAVY. com.

before the holidays.” The event was hosted by Paul and David, two twin brothers and classic looking game show hosts wearing funky patterned blazers and ties. Paul moderated and explained each activity, cracking jokes and keeping the crowd laughing, while David helped players and set up each round. All students were welcome to get a chance to participate in the challenging games to win money. If a student’s name was picked out of the hat, they had the chance to be a contestant. Everybody that played in the games won a free t-shirt, even if they didn’t win money during the round. “I was interested to see how everyone’s reactions were going to be to winning all this money. I thought this was a really interesting event,” Kendall Barksdale, sophomore, said. There were three rounds of games where the winners earned $20 and a final fourth round where all of the pre-

vious winners competed each other to determined who got a chance to go in the ‘money box.’ The games were goofy and loud music played when the action began. Laughter and applause filled the room for the whole two hours. One game was called “Shake Your Booty,” where the players strapped a belt with a plastic box filled with ping pong balls around their waist. Whoever shook their hips enough to get all the ping pong balls out of the small hole in the box first won. Another game was called “Pillow Fight,” where the players wore boxing gloves while taking off pillow cases, then put it back on. There were three “mini games”

between each main round and the winners won $1, $5 and $10. One of the mini games was called “Play It by Ear,” where the players had six soda cans filled with different amounts of pennies. They had to shake each can to determine whether the can had 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 pennies in it. If they guessed right they won money for every can. Graduate student Kedar Salvi was the winner of the final round and was able to go in the money box, where $500 waited to be grabbed. He ended up winning a total of $138. “The games were a little hard but they were fun. I don’t know what I’ll do with the money yet. I’ll probably use it to party with my friends,” Slavi said.

• Starting in the Spring semester, there will be an event management system introduced to allow organizations to check upcoming events and add their own. The system will be a shared calendar for all student organizations. For now, the scheduler will only include events occurring in the Webb Center and the SRC. Possible expansion will occur after the initial release. • Greek Organizations that share

an office, which included IFC, MGC, NPHC and PHC, now only have one council seat and one vote between all four of the organizations. This is to avoid ‘bloc voting,’ which is when a group of voters share common interests and overpower the council with their multiple votes. Since the four Greek organizations share an office, they now share one council seat and vote.

•Discussion came up about why the Webb information desk does not accept credit cards when students and faculty buy tickets for events. It was explained that the cost of allowing credit card purchases would cost the university thousands of dollars, possibly increasing ticket charges. • There are currently three open seats on Webb Council for any student organizations to fill. Any organizations on campus are welcome to fill these positions to help make major decisions within the Webb Center and student organization events.

• The Webb Center will start advertising the services they provide more frequently at the information desk. This was brought up after someone stated that hand sanitizer dispensers were constantly empty and most students were not aware that this could be brought up to the help desk so that something could be done about it. For any student organization interested in attending a Webb Council meeting, there will be four meetings during the Spring semester: Jan. 26, Feb. 23, March 30 and April 20. All take place in the Cape Charles Room from 12:30-1:30 p.m.

Let's Get Weird

Unconventional Christmas Movie Takeover Robert Younger Contributing Writer

With the semester almost over and the holidays almost upon us, it’s a good time to start getting into the holiday mood with some good old-fashioned movies. Since we all know the classics, here are five of the more unusual ways you could enjoy this holiday season. ‘The Gingerdead Man’ (2005) Three words: Dead Gingerbread Man. Have two more: Gary Busey. Now mix those two together and you get a good idea of what “The Gingerdead Man” can offer. Brought to us by low-budget horror icon Full Moon Studios, Busey plays a convicted murderer sentenced to death row, only to come back to life a la “Chuckie” as a homicidal gingerbread man out for revenge.

It’s as low budget and schlocky as it sounds, and exactly the sort of thing you would expect from Full Moon. Plus, the Gingerdead Man has a rock song as his theme, and that’s so dumb, its perfect. Available On: Hulu ‘Santa with Muscles’ (1996) With a title like this, where can you go wrong? In this quirky flick, Hulk Hogan plays a bodybuilderturned-amnesiac who’s convinced he is now Santa Claus. From there, he needs to stop a mad scientist from taking over an orphanage (because why not?). While maybe not the weirdest thing you can watch, there’s something oddly satisfying about watching a jacked Santa beat up bad guys. Available On: Youtube ‘Black Christmas’ (1974) Sometimes you want a movie to

BITS OF A&E ‘Madhaus’: Fall 2016 Senior Exhibition An exhibition presented by the Art Department’s Fall 2016 Senior Show Class, ‘Madhaus’ will display an array of works from a variety of mediums. Seniors create their art for display and curate, plan and execute the show. The exhibition is on display at the Baron and Ellin Gordon Art Galleries through Dec. 19. Hampton Native D.R.A.M. Gets Grammy Nod Among the list of Grammy nominees released Dec. 6 was Hampton Roads’ very own, D.R.A.M. (Shelley Massenburg-Smith). Only a few months ago, his hit “Broccoli” went double platinum, and now the self-described “trappy-go-lucky” artist has something else to celebrate. D.R.A.M. was nominated for “Best Rap/Sung Performance” for the track, which features Lil Yachty. The Grammy Awards air Feb. 12, 2017. Chelsea District Welcomes Benchtop Brewing Co. The newest edition to Norfolk’s craft beer scene will celebrate their Grand Opening on Dec. 17 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Benchtop Brewing Company describes themselves as “hop forward” and says they focus on Belgian-style farmhouse brews. The brewery is opening in Norfolk’s Chelsea District, a growing hub of breweries, restaurants and even a coffee roastery and tattoo parlor. The Grand Opening celebration will include cornhole and food trucks. Benchtop Brewing Co. is located at 1129 Boissevain Ave. ‘ELF The Musical’ Comes to Chrysler Hall The modern-day Christmas classic, “Elf,” will come to life at Chrysler Hall. When orphan Buddy crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and winds up at the North Pole, he grows up thinking he is an elf. His poor toy-making abilities and unusually tall height lead him to discovering that he is, in fact, human. Buddy embarks on a trip to New York City to find his real parents and ends up reminding New York City of the true meaning of Christmas. The musical will run from Dec. 16-18.

make you feel good for the holidays, and sometimes you just want to watch some kids get diced up in a good old slasher movie. Fear not, “Black Christmas” has you covered. In this film, a number of sorority girls are spending the night together when things go awry and a killer finds their way into their home. Filled with foul language and grotesque ideas, “Black Christmas” is a fun ride for the more cynicallyminded holiday enthusiast. Available On: Youtube ‘Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny’ (1974) Ever just watch a movie and find yourself asking, “Why is this a thing? What were they thinking?” Well, “Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny” is one of those movies. Santa’s marooned on a random beach and needs the children of

the world to help him get out. After much effort and a bizarre cameo by Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, they eventually wind up calling on the Ice Cream Bunny for help – and no, there is no ice cream anywhere in the film. Things only get weirder, as the entire second half of the movie is a bizarre version of “Thumbelina,” centered around horrifying creatures all wanting to marry Thumbelina. There are so many bizarre things in this film, it’s hard to know where to begin. The film is hard to get ahold of nowadays, but it’s out there if you’re willing to look for it. 'Star Wars Holiday Special' (1978) With “Star Wars: Rogue One” right around the corner, there’s sure to be a lot of people in the mood for the fan-favorite sci-fi franchise. In-

stead of watching the same seven movies, though, why not take a look at this amazingly atrocious gem? It’s "Star Wars" if you took out the "Wars" part (and most of the stars, if we’re being honest). The story follows Chewbacca’s family as they prepare for Life Day, and really that’s about as much of the plot that's going to make sense. Most of the film is spent following roaring wookies, with no way of knowing what they are saying. The "Star Wars Holiday Special" is bad – bafflingly bad. Beyond that, there’s really not much else that can be said without ruining the experience. Go check it out and see for yourself. Available On: Youtube Hope these twisted little holiday gems are just the thing to brighten up your holiday season!

'Santa Claus vs. the Devil' George Plank Staff Writer

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. A time for peace and togetherness. A time to put aside all of our differences in the name of brotherly love. It’s also the time of year when studios will pump out an endless supply of Christmas specials to meet a seasonal niche market, and most other Christmas specials follow the same, cookie-cutter, formula. This is not the case for the 1959 Mexican-made Christmas movie, “Santa Claus,” or as it is sometimes affectionately called, “Santa Claus vs. the Devil.” Santa, from his floating castle in space, can see and hear all of the children of Earth. The children, from every country, love and sing their praises to Santa Claus for being the embodiment of good that he is. Meanwhile, in hell, the Devil plans to turn the children against Santa by having them do evil things. Santa can only watch as Pitch, the Devil’s chief demon, whispers into the ears of children. A poor Mexican girl named Lupita is encouraged to steal a doll. She resists Pitch’s instructions but receives a nightmare dream sequence from him with life-sized dolls, all encouraging her to steal. She remains pure,

so Pitch makes an attempt to stop Santa’s progression by meddling with his sleigh and equipment. Through the whirlwind sequence of events, Santa succeeds in delivering all of the presents before the sun rises and sees that Pitch receives his comeuppance. “Santa Claus” is weighed down significantly by its strange visuals, unusual concept and low production value. The story is often interrupted in favor of showing an overly long musical number or a disturbing dream sequence. The reindeer were made from plaster, and it’s clear that this movie did not have to budget to meet the scope and size of what the film wanted to be. This movie is also one of the more unique and original Santa Claus stories available. It’s easy enough to write a Santa Claus story that simply goes through the checklist of Christmas movie tropes, but instead this film chose to be different. Santa doesn’t live in the North Pole; he lives in a castle in space. In his castle, Merlin the Magician gives him magical sleeping powder and a disappearing flower, and Vulcan, the Roman God of the Forge, creates a key so Santa can enter any house he wishes. The movie is unique to the point of contention with Santa Claus purists, but it takes imagination and heart to create some-

@maceandcrown

@maceandcrown

thing that dares to deviate so far from tradition. Santa in this film is the same as any other movie Santa. He is kind and jolly, cares about the children and will do all in his power to make sure that his job is completed before the children wake up on Christmas morning. Pitch, as a character, borrows some influence from the Grinch school of Christmas villainy. His costume is that of the stereotypical devil character, all red with horns and a tail. He wants to stop Christmas by making the children commit evil, or by denying them the holiday altogether. He wants nothing more than to see Santa fail and his attempts vary wildly from the beginning of the film to the end. This movie seems to exist in a form of Christmas limbo. It’s not well-known enough to fall into the place of tradition with the Rankin/ Bass animated specials, but it’s not bad enough to be shown every year – like “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.” It has found minor notoriety from being riffed by the cast of “Mystery Science Theatre 3000,” and many consider it to be a cult classic. If you’re looking for a laugh and you need something different to watch this holiday season, then “Santa Claus vs. the Devil” may be right for you.

He’s a writer, actor, rapper, comedian and recently, a showrunner with FX’s hit comedydrama, “Atlanta.” With the release of “Awaken, My Love!” on Dec. 2 from Glassnote Records, he’s added the title of “rock star” to his résumé. Still performing under his alias created from an online Wu-Tang Name Generator, Childish Gambino continues to evolve in his artistry with his third studio release. From his early days of Lil’ Wayne mimicry and nasally delivery to the highly introspective, Grammy-nominated “Because the Internet,” Glover has mainly operated with rap as his preferred medium when it comes to music. However, he’s never been a stranger to lending his vocals on the track. On his latest album, Glover's polished timbre and falsetto glide against sensual bass grooves, futuristic sound effects and aggressive guitars throughout. Several tracks premiered at his live, multi-day event named Pharos, where Glover invited fans to camp at California’s Joshua Tree National Park this past Labor Day weekend. Fans were treated to an advanced screening of “Atlanta” and performances of, at the time, unreleased music from Gambino dressed up in glow-in-thedark tribal paint and a grass skirt. In its production, Glover worked with long-time collaborator and friend Ludwig Göransson, John Armstrong, Chris Hartz, Ray Suen

and many others. “Awaken, My Love!” opens up with lead single, “Me and Your Mama.” The six-minute track opens quietly with wind chimes, synth beats and a female backing choir. An aggressive guitar and rolls of percussion rumble as the song transitions to the hook and verses. After the outro, the instrumental slowly lets out like light rain after a thunderstorm. In today’s increasingly divided society, Glover promotes love and solidarity on the George Clinton influenced track, “Have Some Love.” His plea for peace echoes in the hook: “Have a word for your brother / Have some time for one another / Really love one another / It’s so hard to find.” Electric guitars charge on “Boogieman,” a track tackling racially-motivated fear: “If you point a gun at my rising sun / Though we’re not the one / But in the bounds of your mind / We have done the crime.” Kari Faux makes an appearance on “Zombies.” The two illustrate individuals that feed off of others’ success as mindless parasites: “We’re coming out to get you / We’re all so glad we met you / We’re eating you for profit / There is no way to stop it.” The outro exits into an emotional guitar solo, full of wah-wah and electric cries. The second single of the album, “Redbone,” submerges itself in syncopated drumming, a slap-happy bass line and an overall soulful, sonic landscape mirrored by weary expressions of infidelity: “But stay woke / N-ggas creepin’ / They gon’ find you / Gon’ catch you sleepin’ / Put your hands up on me.” Earlier this year, it was revealed

that Glover became a father. “Baby Boy” expresses the complicated relationship between him, his newborn son and the child’s mother, as well as the fears and doubts that accompany fatherhood. The 50-min experimental, genrefused album closes out with two-part track “Stand Tall.” The first half wraps itself around warm guitar chord progressions and a backing choir. Flutes blow, carrying the track into the second half to reveal an auto-tuned Glover. Throughout, the instrumental evolves as the lyrics maintain the idea of perseverance: “Keep on your dreams, keep standing tall / If you are strong you cannot fall.” Imbued with psychedelic soul, Glover channels soulful, Funkadelic vibes on “Awaken, My Love!” The album doesn’t, however, feel like a cheap pastiche. Instead, Glover uses elements of P-Funk as a vehicle to drive music beyond familiar territory to unexplored dimensions as he comments on society and his personal life. Gambino steers away from delivering calculated, clever wordplay to evoking raw and intense emotions. Fans hoping for “Awaken, My Love!” to be akin to past projects won’t get what they expect, but they shouldn’t be afraid. It’s important to note that this album won’t be for everyone, but it showcases Glover’s musical craftsmanship and innovation as an artist. A line from “Candler Road” off of 2014’s “STN MTN/Kauai” EP best describes his sonic trajectory: “They want the old Bino so they try to rewind / The new Bino too ahead of his time.”

The 20th Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show dazzled the audience as per usual, but this year it took place at the Grand Palais in the dreamy city of Paris. Over 50 models walked the runway in six different collections of lingerie magic. The jaw-dropping show featured some the most successful runway models in the sexiest show in runway fashion. The six collections of lingerie presented were “The Road Ahead,” “Mountain Romance,” “Pink Nation,” “Secret Angel,” “Dark Angel” and “Bright Night Angel.” These six portions featured the extravagant designs while pop artists Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga and The Weekend sang for each collection’s segment. The first collection seen on the runway was “The Road Ahead.” Collection Creative Director Sophia Neophitou said it heavily emphasized, “embracing this multicultural dialogue that we wanted to have about the techniques, the colors, about the fabric.” It opened the show with bright colors, extravagant feathers, tassels, Aztec patterns and even a dragon piece wrapped around the torso of model Elsa Hosk. The next artistic collection, “Mountain Romance,” featured several floral designs and a “Heidi on the hills,” look, Hosk said. As Lady Gaga sang “Million Reasons” from her new release, “Joanne,” models strutted the runway with a doe-eyed innocence in their girlish stockings, floral wings and lederhosen. The “Pink Nation” collection ran next, with Bruno Mars singing. It was inspired by the casual street wear that the Pink brand represents, but includes the sporty, yet feminine, aspect of the brand. ria’s Secret. The “Secret Angel” collection featured sultrier designs while artist Abel Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd, sang throughout the segment. Lace cutouts, gray chiffon wings and leather emphasized a theme of temptation, as the bright reds and turquoises still held the playful element. This collection smoothly transitioned to the more seductive designs to follow. “Dark Angel” was a collection that heavily focused on the sexy, seductive side of Victoria’s Secret as Lady Gaga made her way back to the stage. It was packed with extravagant black chiffon wings worn by model Taylor Hill and many sexy boudoir pieces worn by popular models Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid. What’s Victoria’s Secret without sexy, strappy lingerie? Bruno Mars came back for the finale, singing “24K Magic,” to represent the “Bright Night Angel Collection.” Sheer, sequined body suits, an outrageous amount of crystals and the iconic fantasy bra worn by Jasmine Tookes dominated the final runway collection. The 27,000 Swarovski crystals and 450 karats value this bra at $3 million. The amount of artisan ingenuity invested into the designs is astonishing. Custom costume designer Marian Hose has been part of the team that creates and constructs the angel wings since 2009. The time investment, creativity and skill in producing the looks requires nothing less than perfection. “A wing can take anywhere from 30 to 400 hours, depending on how difficult it is,” Hose said. Over 500 million people tuned in from 190 countries to watch this year’s show. Although the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show has been hosted at several famous venues, it has never been to Paris. The 20th anniversary held in “La Ville Lumière” was a huge honor for the production. Never one to disappoint, Victoria’s Secret dazzled the night.

We’re Getting There...

The Weeknd ‘Starboy’

Ever since debuting with “House of Balloons” back in 2011, The Weeknd, born Abel Tesfaye, has consistently sought out to reinvent R&B. In his quest, he’s mostly found success. Following his first three mixtapes, which were later compiled and released as “Trilogy,” the Toronto crooner signed to Republic Records a year later with his own imprint, XO. On Nov. 25, The Weeknd released “Starboy.” His cohesive trilogy of mixtapes reimagined R&B with its unconventional intimacy shrouded in dark, ambient clouds of production. 2013’s “Kiss Land,” The Weeknd’s first studio album, served as his of-

ficial debut and expanded upon the aforementioned releases. His sophomore effort, “Beauty Behind the Madness,” accelerated his commercial success and pop stardom, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The release of “Starboy,” however, lacks the stellar quality its name promises. Even with the assistance of Daft Punk, Lana Del Rey and Kendrick Lamar, The Weeknd fails to offer an otherworldly album. The album’s opening, title track acknowledges his claim to fame over production from Daft Punk: “Look what you’ve done / I’m a motherf--

-in’ starboy.” “Sidewalks” features Kendrick Lamar and finds an auto-tuned Tesfaye reflecting on his rough journey from obscurity to worldwide recognition. An electric slow jam, “Die For You” puts Tesfaye into submission with romantic complications over lush strides of synths. “I Feel It Coming” closes the album, finding upliftment in its lyrics and Daft Punk-assisted instrumental. At over an hour, The Weeknd carries over familiar themes, cramming “Starboy” with mostly lackluster tracks and a few gems to give it some shine.

Justice ‘Woman’

About a decade ago, the electronic pair from Paris – comprised of Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay – launched to global success with their debut album “†” (pronounced “Cross”). Singles like “D.A.N.C.E.” and “Phantom” ignited dance floors. The French duo took a five-year hiatus after the release of their sophomore album, “Audio, Video, Disco.” in 2011. On Nov. 18, Augé and de Rosnay returned with “Woman,” released by Ed Banger Records. Justice is often, and quite reasonably, compared to fellow French technicians, Daft Punk. It’s understandable since both have embraced

similar elements in their respective discographies. If anything, Justice is almost like a younger brother that’s influenced by their cooler, older sibling, but still manages to find their own niche. While their second studio project drew back on the explosive energy present on their initial release, “Woman” achieves success by sticking to their roots. Even though their latest record is far from groundbreaking, it still shakes the earth and forces its listeners to move. A choir unfolds before a surge of the Parisian’s signature bass slaps strike in the album’s lead single and

opening track, “Safe and Sound.” Smooth in transition, “Pleasure” picks up where the previous song leaves off. Diamond Nights’ Morgan Phalen lends his falsetto: “Use imagination / As a destination / ’Long as you believe / Then you have the key.” “Stop” is slower in tempo and sonically recalls as much nostalgia as its lyrics do. “Woman” doesn’t offer any significant innovation, but perhaps that’s what Justice intended. Their safe approach, however, still invites dangerous, danceable tracks reminiscent of their earlier days. Courtesy Ed Banger Records

The Narrative ‘Golden Silence’

Originally from Long Island and formed in 2007, The Narrative is Suzie Zeldin and Jesse Gabriel. Since their inception, the New York indie band has released four projects and relocated to Nashville. On Dec. 2, the duo followed up their debut, selftitled album with “Golden Silence.” The duo initially sought to complete “Golden Silence” several years back in a barn they rented for a month in upstate New York. Zeldin and Gabriel, however, ran across complications resulting in a delayed release. Eventually, the two finished record-

ing their sophomore effort at different locations in New York and New Jersey. “Moving Out” opens the album up like a sweet sunrise. In its opening lines, their voices showcase fluid harmony over beautiful melodies as they yearn for escape: “I wanna get out of the suburbs / Let my hair grow wild / And find a place I don’t need money just to raise a child.” Their lead single, “Chasing A Feeling,” exudes as much jubilance in its sound as its preceding track. ties, “Toe the Line” boasts a smooth blend of instruments that enhances the lyrics: “And we’ve got a long road / But we’ve got a burning coal / Sometimes it feels too hot to hold / I hope it never goes, I hope it never goes cold.” “Golden Silence” is full of sincerity, tells stories of struggle and feels like the soundtrack to a Sundance film. The time and effort invested into this project definitely pay off in the end. At nearly 50 minutes, Zeldin and Gabriel’s voices pleasantly melt over the warmth of each song’s carefully crafted lyrics and production.

‘The Lobster’

2016 | R | 119 min.

In a dystopian world that requires every person to have a romantic partner, David (Colin Farrell) is sent to a resort to find someone after his girlfriend leaves him. At this resort, he is tasked to find a suitable mate in a matter of forty-five days. If David does not meet this deadline, it is by law that he must be transformed into an animal of his choosing, his choice being a lobster. Initially, when David tries putting himself out there, he meets an odd bunch of characters that either put him off or feel disinterested to him. Things begin to take a turn, though,

when David finds himself initiated in a group that rebel against the idea of love and companionship to a militant level. This turn grows to be unfortunate for David when he begins to fall for one of them. Romance is something that many people in society strive for, and at times it can feel weird and isolating to be the only one not with a partner. This is the conversation “The Lobster” carries with its audience using pitchdark humor and cruel nature. This is a film that takes that anxiety regarding love and isolation and builds a world around it.

While “The Lobster” is strong all the way through, the second half the movie does take a dark turn that manages to throw the movie a little off balance. Suddenly, the quirky nature that encompasses the first half of the movie turns into something far more bitter and mean spirited. Still, “The Lobster” is something of a hidden gem that boasts a wildly inventive premise that never defies itself. This film is available on Amazon Prime. Courtesy Film4

‘Songs My Brothers Taught Me’ 2015 | Unrated | 98 min.

As a high school senior who has lived on his Native American reservation his whole life, Johnny (John Reddy) has dreams of leaving and starting a new life with his girlfriend. However, leaving home means that Johnny also has to leave his little sister in the care of his erratic mother. When she hears about Johnny’s plans to move away, his little sister begins to hang around a dangerous bunch. Johnny begins to question his choice to leave when he receives news that his estranged father has passed away. Though Johnny is already used

to his father not being around, his sister needs guidance after the loss. It’s at this moment that the high school senior must contemplate whether or not it’s a good idea to leave home. Using unknown and inexperienced actors to help tell her story, director Chloe Zhao creates a visually and aesthetically rich film. The narrative that captures everyday life in a present-day reservation completely immerses the audience in a film that feels real. The film also benefits from its characters who all feel like genuine people, thanks to the wonderful cast.

Story wise, there is enough drama that will keep audiences invested in the film. “Songs My Brothers Taught Me,” however, does tend to drag during the middle portion of the film. The themes and dilemmas that the characters deal with feel fleshed out, but there is a lot of repetition that fails to give the film something more. For a quiet indie film that comes close to reality, this is a movie that still has a lot to offer. This film is available on Netflix.

‘A Christmas Horror Story’ 2015 | Unrated | 99 min.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! People are piling into retail stores to find the perfect gift for their loved ones. Houses in neighborhoods are illuminated with lights that only make one ponder the high cost on their electric bill. There are even overworked college students unwinding after the apocalyptic period known as “Finals Week.” What better way is there to celebrate this time of year than by watching Christmas movies? For those looking for a more atypical Christmas movie that feeds the horror-loving side of all of us, perhaps “A Christmas Horror Story” is

the title that warrants consideration. Framed as an anthology picture, the film follows four different stories weaved throughout that find various characters battling supernatural elements for their holiday. Interestingly enough, the film is able to blend different styles of horror without making the tone feel choppy. As audiences watch “A Horror Christmas Story,” they are introduced to effective segments, such as one where a couple struggles with their child being taken over by a changeling. Other segments that audiences will have fun with include Saint Nick himself wag-

ing a bloody battle with zombie elves. Much of the time the film is stunted visually by its low budget and the segments can take a while getting into. However, “A Christmas Horror Story” is quite fun and offers something different in the canonical list of Christmas movies. Is it the best of the unconventional Christmas movies? Not by a long shot. With a few glasses of eggnog, though, “A Christmas Horror Story” is worth a look.

Harry Howard Jr. Sports Editor Trailing going into the fourth quarter, the Lady Monarchs defeated rival VCU 70-60 at the Ted Constant Center for head coach Karen Barefoot's 300th career win. The milestone wasn't on her mind though, as all she wanted was another victory for her team. "I hadn't even thought about the 300 wins. I think that's why when I looked up and saw that, I really was in tears. I'm blessed to be able to share that awesome moment with these fans and our players. Monarch Free Throw Woes Cost Them Again

Alex Brooks Contributing Writer VCU headed down Interstate 64 to take on the Monarchs in front of sold out crowd that whited out the Ted. VCU spoiled former ODU great Kent Bazemore's homecoming with a 6764 victory. Bazemore had his jersey retired and was inducted into the ODU Ring of Honor. “As hard as we played, and our guys played really, really hard, as well as we played for the most part defensively, obviously the free throws and the handful of opportunities we had.

When we came away with nothing, playing hard is not enough,” ODU head coach Jeff Jones said. ODU started off hot, jumping out to an early double-digit lead as they shot the lights out shooting 57 percent in the first half and knocked down 6-of-8 three-pointers. At the half, the Monarchs led 34-28. A sluggish start by the Monarchs to start the second half allowed the Rams to get back into the game. VCU guard JeQuan Lewis paced their offense with 20 points on a 6-11 shooting from the field. The Rams went on a 16-1 run to take a 56-50 lead with 4:11

remaining in the contest and never looked back. ODU cut the lead to one point multiple times, but failed to regain the lead. Ahmad Caver attempted to force overtime but missed a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded. It came down to the free-throw line and ODU was not able to convert, making just 13-of28 free throws. “This was a hard-fought game.

Coming in we knew this would be a defense battle. As hard as our guys played, and our guys played really hard, it was the freethrows and missed opportunities that ultimately did us in. We’ve got to figure out a way to help ourselves out. We can’t keep having these self-inflicted wounds if we want to get over this hump against a very good team,” Jones said. B.J. Stith led the Monarchs in scor-

ing with a career-high 17 points and his brother Brandan filled the stat sheet with 10 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two blocks. ODU will get a chance to redeem themselves at the free throw line Dec. 18 at 2 p.m. against the Georgia State Panthers. “It’s tough. I know hard these guys are working and I know how badly they want it, but we’ve got to figure out a way to help ourselves, kind of the self-inflicted kind of stuff at the offensive end. Amazon Go, Prime, Air and Locker: A Physical Presence for an Online Store

Courtesy The Verge Audra Reigle Assistant Technology Editor Amazon is working to create the future of grocery shopping through an app called Amazon Go. When we go shopping in many stores today, we have the option of going through the usual checkout line or going through self-checkout after grabbing the items we need. Going through the normal checkout line usually results in interaction with a cashier to purchase items while the self-checkout doesn’t really require interaction with a cashier, unless the machine acts up. Amazon Go changes that.

The app allows customers to grab the items they want to purchase, put them into their cart, and scan their phone on the way out. Customers are charged only for the items they have in their carts. There is no need for interaction with a cashier with the app. The technologies used for the service are the same ones used in selfdriving cars, according to Amazon Go's website. If a product is taken off the shelf, the app knows. If that product is placed back on the shelf, the app knows. Once you’ve gotten everything you need, you can just walk out of the store. The items you purchased would be charged to your

Originally dubbed Nostalrius, the server had been taken down due to legal issues with Blizzard. After talks with Blizzard seemingly went silent, the server will be relaunched with the name Elysium with or without Blizzard’s consent or blessing. Google to Go 100 Percent Renewable in 2017 Google announced that it will receive all of its power for all of its operation from renewable energy sources next year, which amounts to about 2600 megawatts for all of its offices and data centers. “We are convinced this is good for business,” EU energy lead at Google Marc Oman said in an interview with “The Guardian.” Pokémon Go Teams up With Starbucks While Pokémon Go already encouraged players to go out and patronize local businesses in search of pokémon, there hasn’t been an official cross promotion until a leak confirmed one. According to the leaked documents, most Starbucks will be official locations where players can encounter new characters, which may be the new set of generation two pokémon. Fitbit to Purchase Pebble Former Kickstarter darling Pebble confirmed that they will be selling to fitness wearable company FitBit for between $34 and $40 million. This purchase is nowhere close to the $70 million that Intel allegedly offered them earlier this year, or the $740 million Citizen offered in 2015. After poor sales of their Pebble 2 smartwatch and having to lay off 25 percent of its workforce, Pebble is giving up on hardware entirely. Existing software will receive reduced attention. Amazon account, and you would receive a receipt for the purchase. Just about anything can be purchased in the store. Customers can purchase grab and go meals, essential items or meal kits to prepare a meal for two. Purchasing items in the store is limited to Amazon employees in the beta program, but the company intends to open it to the public in 2017. This comes alongside a push for Amazon to have more of a presence in cities. Amazon Prime Now allows users to order items through Amazon and have them delivered to their home within two hours. Restaurant orders can be delivered within one hour in select areas, including northern Virginia. Reviews for Amazon Prime Now show that the biggest complaints are about the availability of the service. Many reviews talk about how the service is only available on smartphones and not on tablets or laptops. Other

complaints involve how tips are given before the delivery is actually done, but some reviews state that the user can go back and edit the tip later once the delivery is made. Amazon Prime Air will allow users to have the items they order within 30 minutes or less. Drones will handle the deliveries done through the service, but it is still in development. There are currently development centers in the U.S., the U.K., Austria and Israel with testing occurring in “multiple international locations.” Amazon Locker lets customers pick up items delivered to the locker within three days of the item’s delivery to the locker. The lockers can be found in major cities in high density delivery areas. Locally, there are lockers that can be found in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Hampton and Newport News. Depending on the location, the lockers may only be open for certain hours, but there are some that are open 24 hours a day.

A 2014 review of Amazon Locker from PC World praises the system. Amazon Locker is not just about convenience, but it can also be about safety. If you don’t want a package to be left on your doorstep or have to go out of your way to pick up a package you missed the delivery for, you can have it sent to a locker instead. In addition, it keeps you from having to wait for a delivery driver, who may not come when you expect them to. A 10-year-old ad was referenced on Reddit following Amazon Go’s announcement, according to AdAge. The ad was from IBM, and it featured similar technology to what Amazon Go uses today. Still, with many retailers still using traditional check out lines in conjunction with self-checkout, it is unlikely that companies will make an upgrade to the scale of Amazon Go’s trial in Seattle any time soon.

The Rental House (Part 5) by Trisha Reese

anni wakes up around two o’clock the next morning to the sound of hammering. She sighs and buries her head in her pillow, but the noise persists, so she reluctantly sits up and pushes herself out of bed. She groggily stumbles towards the window and pulls back the curtain. The sound isn’t a hammering at all, but the hacking of her father’s ax as he chops firewood in the back yard. Danni lets the curtain slide back into place and wanders back to her bed, where she puts on her everyday grey hoodie. Not a single supernatural event occurred last night. No cold, hoarse whisper, no moving of objects, not so much as an eerie presence to keep her from falling asleep—which she did, eventually. Danni lets out a huff as she slips some socks on. If Mom let her sleep in, that means she’s somehow gotten out of going to school. At least that’s something. And because she’s not going to school, she knows exactly what she’s doing with the rest of her day. Grabbing a book from the pile under her desk, Danni walks out of her room and down the stairs. “Hey, how are you feeling?” mom asks while peeling potatoes when Danni enters the kitchen. “You’ve seemed a little out of it lately, and I realize that the move happened fast,

and school did, too. I thought you could use a day to catch up.” “Thanks Mom.” Danni smiles, and Mom reciprocates. Danni holds her book up. “I’m going outside to read.” “All right. Be careful.” Danni flashes a thumbs up in response and heads outside. Her socks are dampened by the wet leaves on the ground, but she trudges along until she gets to the other side of the road, where she sits on the ground at the bus stop, opens her book, and waits. At 3:30, her wait is over. A big yellow school bus roars as it screeches to a stop in front of her, and a few kids hop out, Cat Pack among them. Danni closes her book and stands, crossing her arm and fixing the boy with a glare. “How was last night?” he asks. “Just fine,” Danni says, “It was perfectly normal, just like any other night.” “What? You’re lying.” “No, I’m not!” Danni shoves him. “You lied to me! You tricked me! I can’t believe I was starting to actually believe you. You’re just a stupid kid after all, you know that?” “That can’t be right. It can’t be.” Cat Pack reached into his pack and pulled out his ghost book, flipping through the pages. “It is right, because there’s no such thing as ghosts. Put that book away, Cat Pack. It’s lying to you.” With that,

Danni turns and heads home, leaving the boy to himself. That night, Danni isn’t scared at all to get ready for bed. She waits until it’s late at night, around 11, before she puts her pajamas on, and by then everyone else is asleep. When she comes back into her room after brushing her teeth, she closes her door and turns out the light, letting the white light of the moon guide her to the bed. But as she settles in, she hears the same hacking noise that woke her earlier that day. How much firewood do we really need? she thought to herself, jumping out of bed and striding towards the window. When she pulls back the curtain, she sees someone chopping firewood, but it’s not her father. Slowly, he looks up at her, his eyes cloudy and white and his skin so old and decrepit that it has begun falling off of his face in patches. Danni gasps and stumbles backwards until she hits the wall, when she hears a crackling sound. Suddenly the wall becomes lumpy, and it moves, and she leaps off of it with a yelp. Whipping around, she sees two hands pushing at the wall from the inside, as though it’s made of something thin and elastic. The hands reach for her, and before she has a chance to react, they wrap her up and yank on her until she falls into the wall. She doesn’t even have time to scream. to be continued...
