Letter from the editor Dear Monarchs, From the staff at Mace and Crown, we’d like to welcome you to our ever-growing campus. Whether you just experienced your first week of college classes or began your last semester here at Old Dominion, we hope that you had an enjoyable first week back. Thank you for picking up a copy of our first edition of 2016, or if you’re reading this online, visiting our website.

Over the next few months, we hope to provide you with the information and insight you need as a Monarch while we tackle campus issues, share student stories and reflect on community events. It is our hope that we can elevate the voice of the student body and create real, constructive dialogue on campus from the pages of our weekly newspaper.

I know that many of you, like myself and several members of the Mace and Crown editorial board, are just weeks away from graduating and moving on from the university we’ve dedicated countless hours to. As you put the final touches on your education this semester, take the time to stop and reflect on your efforts here. You’re almost at the finish line, and all of your hard work has been worth it. Take the lessons you’ve learned as a Monarch with you into the next stage of your lives.

If you’re just beginning your college education or have more than a semester left, use that time to find out what is really important to you. There are already some fantastic events lined up for this semester and hundreds of organizations that would love to have you as a member.

Still no idea? Alicia Garza, co-creator of Black Lives Matter, is coming to campus on February 2 and former Cuban hostage Alan Gross will be here on February 23. You’re welcome.

We’re fortunate enough to attend a university that employs some wonderfully brilliant minds. When you’re in class, put your phones away. Stay off of Facebook for an hour. Engage. I’ve been in classes taught by professors that truly changed and shaped my journey at ODU, and I’m sure if you give your professors the same attention they give you, you just might find one or two that influence your path as well.

It wasn’t long ago that I was sitting in a class, unsure of what to do next, when a professor said to the class, “Go write for the Mace.” I got involved immediately and am thankful that I heeded her advice. I found my home on campus. Go find yours.

If you have grievances, let’s hear them. Bring us your problems or needs, and we’ll do our best to voice your concerns. Without you, our newspaper wouldn’t exist.

If you’re interested in writing, videography/photography, web design or anything related to journalism, come see us at the Mace. We’re always looking for more voices and creativity.

I hope that you have a wonderfully productive semester here at ODU. Take advantage of your opportunities, and never look back.

LOCAL NEWS DEAN OF ARTS AND LETTERS STEPPING DOWN Charles Wilson, who has served as the Dean of Arts and Letters since August 2010, announced in an email to faculty on Jan. 13 that he would be leaving his position this summer. Wilson said that he wishes to return to teaching after leaving behind his role as Dean.

Wilson has been a part of the ODU community for over 20 years.

ODU LIBRARIES WILL HOST TOWN HALL ON FEB. 1 After conducting a campus-wide survey, to determine the strength and weaknesses of the ODU libraries, a town hall will be conducted in Perry Library to discuss the results. The meeting will take place on Feb. 1 at 2 p.m. in rooms 1310 and 1311 in the Learning Commons. Light refreshments will be served. RSVP to librarysurvey@ odu.edu by Monday, Jan. 25.

NORFOLK TREASURER INDICTED ON FELONY CHARGES Anthony Burfoot, City Treasurer on Norfolk, was indicted on federal charges on Jan. 8. The charges include wire fraud, perjury and using his position to solicit illegal payments and gifts. Burfoot faces a penalty of five to 20 years if convicted.

LAMBERTS POINT SHOPPING CENTER PLAN REVISED As reported earlier a large shopping center is planned for the Lamberts Point neighborhood near ODU. The newly submitted plans call for reusing an existing warehouse on site and rerouting the Elizabeth River Trail along the site.

VIRGINIA BEACH IMPLEMENTS SKATEPARK FEES, PUSHES SKATING ELSEWHERE

Zach Moeller Staff Writer Record high temperatures encouraged Virginia Beach skateboarders to enjoy what would be their last days of free skatepark access. With the New Year, Virginia Beach skateparks require an annual membership.

Since their creation, skate parks in Virginia Beach have mandated skaters to turn in a pass with an emergency contact at the beginning of every session. These laminated passes were free and granted access to three facilities around the city– Mount Trashmore Park, Williams Farm Park, and Woodstock Park.

The passes will now have an annual fee of $20 for youth and $30 for adults. Prices increase an additional $20 each for non-residents.

According to the city of Virginia Beach website, the new fees are to

“assist with the cost of staffing and maintaining our skateparks.” However, many locals are unwilling to pay for membership after having free access for years.

Virginia Beach city ordinance, such as Section 7-59.4, prohibits skateboarding in many areas of the city.

Penalties for skating in the streets include fines as well as criminal prosecution.

Some fear the new fees will hurt local business. Jason Hawkes, owner of Cardinal Skateshop, worries that

taxpayers are already paying for,” Hawkes said. “They aren’t charging people to roll down the hill or play on the playground.”

Cardinal Skateshop is only 1 mile from Mount Trashmore skatepark.

Pointing out Virginia Beach as the largest city in the commonwealth, Hawkes went on to say he doesn’t

invite professional teams to come to the area for demos because of the rules already in place surrounding the facilities.

The shop owner said he aims to do as much as he can to help the local skate scene after this setback, but acknowledged there’s only so much he can do alone.

“It’s up to the youth in this area to take a stand,” Hawkes said. “No one looks at the bigger picture. Nobody wants to do anything, especially in this era where everything is handed to them.”

In the meantime, locals like Sewell plan on going elsewhere.

“I’ll be at Northside Skate Park in Norfolk,” Sewell said. “You don’t even need a helmet. There are no rules there. That’s why it’s awesome. That’s what skateboarding’s all about.”

Anton’s app is now one of the fastest growing student safety and party apps in app stores and has recently been featured in the Washington Post, Tech Crunch, Huffington Post,

USA Today, Business Insider, BBC Radio, Cosmopolitan and MTV. As of January 2015, the app had 220,000 users with an average of 500-1,000 downloads on a daily basis.

Anton also serves as co-founder and partner at Trend Pie, a social media advertising agency specializing in leveraging their millenial network of over 200 million followers across Instagram, Twitter, Vine and Snap-

Alicia Garza, community organizer and co-founder of #BlackLivesMatter will speak as part of the President’s Lecture Series.

After George Zimmerman’s 2013 acquittal, Alicia along with friends Opal Tometi and Patrisse Cullors took to social media to launch the hashtag and conversation around “Black Lives Matter.” The movement now has 26 chapters worldwide and has arguably become the biggest movement of the Millennial generation.

According to her speaker’s bureau website, Garza “challenges society to recognize and celebrate the contributions of all black lives, so that we can truly be a world where all people are valued, respected and can live with dignity.” Garza has received numer-

ous awards for her work including placing on The Root’s 2015 List of African American achievers and influencers, and the 2015 Politico50 Guide to the thinkers, doers and visionaries transforming American politics. She has written for many publications including The Guardian, The Nation and more.

She currently is the Special Projects Director for the National Domestic Workers Alliance. She has previously served as Executive Director of People Organized to Win Employment Rights.

A LOOK INSIDE ODU’S CAMP Courage Millers Partners Challenge Course: An outdoor, twelve station challenge course designed and run by the Department of Recreation and Wellness is being planned for Whitehurst Beach. The purpose of the course is to promote team cooperation more than physical fitness.

“That’s my biggest hope,” Bridget Nemeth, director of Recreation and Wellness, said, “that students see this awesome course and recognize it as a great facilitator of teamwork.”

Groups of students or faculty will make their way through a sequence of low-level –no more than one to two feet off the ground — adaptable puzzles and obstacles lead by a trained facilitator. The course will be ADA certified and can be adapted to meet the particular needs of any group. Homeland Contracting Corporation won the construction contract at just over $225,000. Christopher Pewterbaugh, the project manager for Design and Construction at ODU, says Homeland hopes to break ground mid-February and to finish the course by the end of April of this year.

The project is entirely funded by donations from Ralf Courage and Jeffrey Miller from Courage Millers Partners, LLC. A nighttime architectural rending of the new Education Building, scheduled to be completed soon.

L.R. Hill Sports Complex Expansion: The L.R. Hill Sports Complex, currently used mainly as a football practice facility, is set to be expanded. The complex is also used by the women’s lacrosse and field hockey teams. The expansion, being carried out in two phases, will involve enlarging the facility by 16,912-square-foot by relocating and enlarging the existing 6,000-square-foot weight training facility to the new addition.

The expansion will also include offices for the strength coach and staff, offices for academic advisers and graduate assistants, a meeting room, a dining area and a workout mezzanine with a large picture window looking out onto the practice field. Construction on the $4.16 million project being built by RRRM Design-Build and designed by Clark-Nexsen Architecture and Engineering began in late 2015, with completion expected this fall. The project will be funded by original (leftover) funding from the original building’s construction in 2008. No tax money will be spent.

Whitehurst Hall Improvements: Both the Legends Dining Hall in Whitehurst and the residence hall’s HVAC system are expected to be upgraded soon. A $3.38 million project is planned to improve the building’s ventilation. Currently, the working drawings by project designer VMDO Architects are about 90 percent completed. If the project is approved in accordance with state regulations, the project would take place next summer with expected completion by the fall. Not much is known at this time about the Legends project, but it will involve renovating (not expanding) the existing facility.

New Student Union Building: A detailed analysis is underway to determine whether renovating the existing Webb Center would be more or less cost-effective than building a new student union.

Regardless of which direction ODU heads in, there will be a need to account for space on the existing Webb Center footprint for a new Student Engagement and Enrollment Services building and the new Physical Sciences building. The master plan for the new Physical Sciences building site will not be available until the schematic drawings of the new Student Union building, which are expected to be completed in the late April or early May by Moseley Architects and WTW Architects, are submitted. The former Education Building would likely be used as a temporary space for offices and facilities currently housed in the Webb Center.

Child Study Center Moving to the University Village: In mid-2017, the Child Study Center will move to the University Village. The building’s construction is being funded as a part of the New Education Building project because it was originally going to be a renovation of the current facility, adjacent to the Batten Arts and Letters building. However, the university ran into issues because the cost of a renovation of the Lions Child Study Center has exceeded the cost of building a new facility in the Village along Killam Ave. The building is currently in its design phase with a final design expected to be ready by the end of this year. The building could be complete as soon as early 2018.

PUS CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS Mitchum Basketball Performance Center: Construction on a new 24,000-square-foot basketball practice facility kicked off in late 2015. The $8,400,000 facility is set to include a two full-sized practice courts, a 14,000 square foot strength conditioning and training space, locker and shower rooms, team offices, conference rooms and players’ lounges. The project is located in the mediumsized open field between the Ted Constant Convocation Center and the University Village. ClarkNexsen Architecture & Engineering designed the project and the lowest bidder, P.G. Harris Construction Company will build it. The project is being funded by the ODU Athletic Foundation.

“That’s all private dollars,” said Feltes. “There are no student fees in that, there’s no university debt and obviously no state funding.”

The City of Norfolk has approved the site plan and substantial work will start on the site within a the next week. The project will provide the men’s and women’s basketball team with a full-fledged state-of-the-art facility.

“Everything they need to play basketball well is in this facility except for a physical laundry room,” said Feltes.

New Physical Sciences Building Phase I: In 2014, the New Physical Sciences Building was authorized to move to preliminary design by the General Assembly in Richmond. This year, the project is in the government budget for potential approval. The project, however, will not move forward until schematic drawings for the New Student Union have been completed.

Explaining the drawing process, Feltes said, “There are three phases to architectural drawings.

Schematic drawing is 15 percent of the building’s design, preliminary drawing is 35 percent of the design and working drawing is 90 percent of the design.”

The new building will feature undergraduate laboratories, graduate teaching laboratories, offices and a new planetarium. Due to the complicated nature of science buildings — mechanical systems and life safety equipment — the building will likely take 15 to 16 months to fully design, before any construction can begin.

Sustainability and Resiliency in Planning: With campus locked between the Elizabeth and the Lafayette Rivers, the university plans to take rising sea levels into account for all of its future projects. The Federal Emergency Management Agency updated the floodplain maps in our area within the last 18 months and according to Feltes, weather events with the statistical odds of occurring once every 100 years are starting to happen every three to four years.

“I would anticipate that we will start to see mechanical systems start to migrate to second floors, instead of being on first floors. More buildings will be built up on a plinth,” said Feltes.

One of the biggest issues that the University will face in the near future is storm water management.

“When we finish the New Student Union, you’re probably going to see a very large stormwater feature somewhere around Kaufman Mall,” said Feltes. “We will make it very attractive by making it a centerpiece. We have to deal with stormwater on site, today.”

In addition to the large feature, you may see cisterns under buildings, gray water systems in buildings and wet ponds and dry ponds in the future.

LEED certification of a building is determined by the following factors: building being built on a sustainable site, building saving water, building have sustainable energy systems (air conditioning, heating, ventilation, lighting and hot water), recycled/local/regional materials used for construction, indoor environment (use of daylight and low-emitting materials) and innovating in the building’s overall design.

According to Virginia state law, all projects on the campus have to be at a minimum LEED-Silver certified. The university is aiming for LEED-Gold certification for the New Residential Dining Hall Facility and the New Student Union.

SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS TO ENLIGHTEN STUDENTS Every semester, the Office of University Events brings an eclectic variety of speakers to campus. This spring’s speakers include: activist Alicia Garza, humanitarian Alan Gross, biologist and neurologist Kenneth Catania, Ai-jen Poo, Erik Nielson and Travis Gosa.

Alicia Garza is a social activist and co-creator of the viral Twitter hashtag #BlackLivesMatter. Alan Gross spent twenty five years with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), prior to being arrested as a hostage by Cuban officials in 2009 for five years. Kenneth Catania is a scientist who studies animal sensory systems, brain organization, and behavior in diverse species. Ai-jen Poo is the Director of the National Domestic Worker’s Alliance and Co-Director of the Caring Across Generations Campaign. This year’s Annual Black History Month Key Note Month is titled “The Hip-Hop & Obama Reader” which will feature: Erik Nielson, Assistant Professor of Liberal Arts at the University of Richmond where he teaches courses on African American literature, hip hop culture and advance writing & Travis Gosa, Assistant Professor of Africana Studies at Cornell University.

SHAKESPEARE’S 400th ANNIVERSARY TO BE COMMEMORATED

The Chrysler Museum, Norfolk State University, the Virginia Arts Festival, Hampton University and many other educational institutions and bodies have teamed up with various departments at Old Dominion University to plan and organize a variety of events to commemorate the 400th Anniversary of Shakespeare. Highlights include: Production of Titus Andronicus performed by Warehouse of Theater and ODURep, Henry V performed by Hampton Roads Summer Theater and the Shakespeare and Our Times Conference. STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS PLAN EVENTS The ODU branch of NAACP will host its 1st Annual Youth Pageant on January 23rd and the Annual Image Awards in mid-March. The Anime Club will hold their annual Minicon in late March.

THE DAY BOWIE DIED Music lost a legend last week, but the eccentric David Bowie got a chance to say goodbye in his own avant-garde and allusive way.

When “Blackstar” was released on Jan. 8, Bowie’s 69th birthday, he seemed to be on the fast track to a major comeback. Critics loved the record. Bowie was also working on music for an off-broadway production called “Lazarus” with a starstudded, tribute concert at New York’s Carnegie Hall planned.

What critics and fans did not know; however, was that Bowie had been battling cancer for 18 months.

He discovered his liver cancer was terminal back in November, soon after the completion of “Blackstar.”

Long-time producer Tony Visconti helped with Bowie’s final record and later confirmed Bowie’s plans

for the record to serve as a farewell to his fans.

“He was so brave and courageous,” Visconti told Rolling Stone. “His energy was still incredible for a man who had cancer. He never showed any fear. He was just all business about making the album.”

Perhaps the record’s most potent track, “Lazarus,” stumped listeners with its overtly morbid themes.

After giving the record another spin on Monday, these themes made all too much sense. The record’s lyrics became downright eerie. Lines from “Lazarus” are sure to bring a tear to listeners’ eyes. Bowie is free as a bluebird looking down from heaven, singing to us all one last time, with nothing left to lose.

Bowie’s desire to keep making music until the end isn’t surprising. Over the last 40 years, he had released almost 30 studio albums with records like the epic “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust” and the genderbending, in-your-face “Hunky Dory.”

He will forevermore influence music culture’s aesthetics and inspire artists from all different genres.

Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers remembered Bowie in a much more permanent fashion by getting the late starman’s name tattooed on his forearm.

Stories about the fascinatingly strange life and legacy of the space oddity filled news feeds this week illustrating Bowie’s influence on popular culture. His genre-bending tunes and gender-bending fashion defined cool for decades. Bowie’s strange spirit will continue to live on through anyone brave enough to embrace their own individuality.

Anthrax ‘For All Kings’ Thrash metal band Anthrax will release “For All Kings” next month on Feb. 26. Currently on tour with Lamb of God and billed as very special guests, the band continues to serve up yet another nitro-induced metal mix fans have come to expect.

“For All Kings” is the eleventh studio album by Anthrax. The band was first formed in New York City back in 1981 by guitarist Scott Ian and bassist Dan Lilker. They were considered one of the leaders of the thrash metal scene in the ‘80s alongside Metallica,

Mothers ‘When You Walk a Long Distance You Are Tired’ The Athens, Georgia-based band, Mothers, will be releasing their debut album, “When You Walk A Long Distance You Are Tired,” on Feb. 26. Led by the hauntingly beautiful lead vocals of self-taught songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Kristine Leschper, Mothers formed shortly after Leschper gained a following in the Georgia music scene as a solo musician.

After recruiting musicians to form Mothers, Leschper, influenced by early rock and folk artists such as Sufjan Stevens, Joanna Newsom and Neutral Milk Hotel, wrote most

of the material that will appear on the new record. Also creative in visual art, Leschper finished her studies at the Lamar Dodd School of Art in early 2014.

Mothers played local shows after the album’s completion in Jan. 2015 including the ATHfest and Slingshot festivals. Before hitting the road opening for Of Montreal, they debuted “No Crying in Baseball” garnering them the title of ‘Band To Watch’ by Stereogum. Accolades also came from NME, Brooklyn Vegan, Ghettoblaster and others.

Frank (2014) Meet Frank. Frank’s not okay.

Starring Michael Fassbender and Maggie Gyllenhaal, this quirky dark comedy chronicles the experimental rock band Soronprfbs’ moderate rise and tragic fall from Internet fame, fronted by the title character (Fassbender) who wears a giant, wide-eyed papier-mâché head.

When the keyboardist attempts to drown himself just hours before a gig, struggling songwriter Jon (Domhnall Gleeson) happens to be strolling by the scene and is offered the job. Impressed by his awkward performance, Frank sees potential in the newcomer.

He describes Jon as “cherishable” (or maybe “perishable”) and invites him to help record the band’s next album.

On a Walden-esque retreat into the Irish country, Frank pushes the band members, including theremin player Clara (Gyllenhaal), to their creative limits in what can only be described as a tortured artist’s boot camp.

Known for his roles in blockbusters like “300” in 2006, Fassbender breathes life into the masked caricature. He truly stuns viewers when Frank is forced to reveal himself and confront his mental health issues.

Gyllenhaal is almost equally unrec-

ognizable at first, violently snarling and contorting her body in the band’s underground shows.

A departure from her usual work, Gyllenhaal’s performance is startlingly abrasive, yet all at once gentle and nurturing as she attempts to protect Frank from the band’s curse. Intimate and unexpectedly hilarious with expertly crafted dialogue, “Frank” is both a love story and a heartfelt, cautionary tale. The film examines the role of social media and the threat of overexposure in the creative process of self-identifying in the modern world.

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award for U.S. dramatic film at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, “Fruitvale Station” celebrates the life of Oscar Grant III, the 22-yearold black man who was shot and killed

by Bay Area police officer Johannes Mehserle on New Year’s Day, 2009.

Grant’s death made headlines, sparking protests throughout the country with Mehserle claiming to have mistook his gun for his taser. Michael B. Jordan stars as Grant and Octavia Spencer moves audiences as his stoic mother.

Director Ryan Coogler and the Grant’s family attorney, John Bur-

ris, collaborated to accurately document the events leading up to Grant’s shooting. They included actual footage taken on cell phones the night of the incident.

Coogler strove to introduce audiences to the man affectionately known as Osc. In one particular scene, the camera follows closely behind Jordan as he eagerly runs into a daycare center, through an empty classroom, out the back door and onto the playground where he scoops up Ariana Neal, who plays Grant’s daughter Tatiana, and embraces the young girl.

The two then race to the car parked

out front in slow motion. This scene is filmed entirely in one low-angle shot, emphasizing Grant’s size in the schoolhouse. The lighting is warm, even nostalgic. Cinematographer Rachel Morrison also credits the use of film, as opposed to digital recording devices, in achieving Fruitvale’s realism.

Grant’s tendencies towards violence and criminal history are not undermined in the film. Much attention is paid to the moments of frustration and desperation, providing audiences with an unbiased, authentic portrait of the man.

The Skeleton Twins(2014) Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader’s reallife friendship undoubtedly manifests itself in their tender, on-screen performances as Maggie and Milo in “The Skeleton Twins.” In the film, the siblings are reunited after a decade of estrangement and one failed suicide attempt. A shared tragic childhood stunts the twins’ growth into healthy adulthood, rendering them dysfunctional in their careers and relationships.

The film takes a refreshing ap-

proach to depression, “adulting,” and what it is to be a gay man on screen.

Yes, there is some wrist cutting, selfloathing and casual scarf tossing, but there isn’t a makeover montage or the overuse of the pet name “honey.”

That’s a plus.

Memory, secrecy and history drive the plot. While the coming-home exposition is overdone, the HaderWiig dynamic makes up for any clichés. Luke Wilson’s performance as Maggie’s jock husband provides

much needed comic relief, but the role played by Ty Burrell of “Modern Family” could have been played by anybody else.

In spite of these pitfalls, the teethcleaning scene in which Maggie and Milo get high in a dentist’s office after closing will make you want to call your sibling and complain about your mom.

FOX’S LUCIFER:

The Devil Made Me Do It George Plank Staff Writer The FOX network has presented quality entertainment to its viewers for decades. Producers most recently struck a chord with Batman fans with the release of “Gotham”, a prequel series featuring Bruce Wayne and many of the Batman villains. Now FOX hopes lightning will strike twice as they reveal their newest comic bookinspired television show, “Lucifer.”

“Lucifer” is based on the DC Comics‘ owned Vertigo Comics series and is a spin off from Neil Gaiman’s “Sandman.” In the “Sandman” series, Lucifer Morningstar leaves his position as the ruler of hell because he is tired of the stereotypical depiction mortals have of the devil. In the solo comic, “Lucifer,” Lucifer is the owner of a Los Angeles piano bar called LUX where he acts as playboy and charmer.

The show picks up during the solo comic run. Lucifer Morningstar, played by Tom Ellis, is a modernday devil driving a convertible and listening to rock ‘n’ roll. He has the uncanny ability to get people to reveal their innermost desires to him.

People find themselves unnaturally drawn to him. He claims to have no interest in punishing the wicked ever since he left hell. After a friend of his dies, however, he sets out to make sure those that are responsible are punished for their transgressions.

In trying to get to the bottom of

his friend’s murder, Lucifer is introduced to detective Chloe Dancer, played by Lauren German. She is immune to Lucifer’s charms, which perplexes and intrigues him. At first she isn’t willing to work with him, but as he continues to use his influence to ascertain information about the murder, she finds that he is always one step ahead of her. Together they make a formidable team that will do whatever it takes to get an answer.

The premise makes the show seem like a combination of CW’s “Supernatural” and FOX’s “Sleepy Hollow” and plays out as a buddy cop comedy. lucifer Courtesy of Fox Television Lucifer’s character comes across less as the immortal prince of darkness and more like a fifteen-year-old who had certain privileges taken away from him by their father. He is immature, which is played on for laughs. He is part of the newest character archetype beginning to surface in modern media: the Loki clone. He is a being of immense power that holds no regard for humans in the slightest, but for some reason or another everyone fawns over him.

Lucifer’s dialogue is written similarly to those of Loki or Ichabod Crane from “Sleepy Hollow.” It feels distant–from a different time or place.

It would be fine if it weren’t for the fact that Lucifer feels the need to have lines that feel very modern and with

some inconsistent delivery. Detective Chloe Dancer tests viewers’ suspension of disbelief when it comes to police procedure. She often makes decisions that no police officer would make in real life.

The humor in the series comes from how honest some characters can be.

Humorous situations arise when Lucifer makes people come clean about things in public where everyone can hear and from circumstances where Lucifer blatantly admits to being the Devil. There are far too many puns for the show’s own good. It seems as if every other line has the word “hell” in it. Though it may change from the reviewer’s copy and the final broadcast, the music is on point. The show opens and closes with Cage the Elephant’s 2009 song, “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked.”

Lucifer is a main character who wants to be empathized with, but with that much power and disregard for humanity, it becomes very difficult. There are supporting characters who are either so over-the-top bad or so benign they’re boring. The pilot may not have been impressive, but maybe the final series will surprise everyone.

If you’re looking to jump into a new show without having to know too much lore beforehand, then maybe you can find enjoyment in “Lucifer.”

DO YOU STILL BELIEVE? ‘THE X-FILES’ RETURNS TO FOX

Nora McCotter Contributing Writer 2016 seems to be the year of reboots. Both “Gilmore Girls” and “Friends” are making a much-awaited reappearance later this year. However, one of the most highly anticipated resurrections is “The X-Files.” The FOX original series ran from 19932002. During that time, it amassed a large and rather passionate fan base.

After 14 years, that passion has been reignited.

In early 2015, rumors began to circulate that a reboot of “The X-Files” was coming. On March 24 of last year, those rumors were confirmed by FOX that there would be a six-episode miniseries beginning in 2016.

Even before FOX began reviewing “The X-Files” for a possible reboot, both Gillian Anderson (Agent Dana Scully) and David Duchovny (Agent Fox Mulder) had been quoted on how thrilled they would be to be a part of the show once again. Anderson said she would be “fucking overjoyed” at the idea of the show’s return. Duchovny’s response was more subtle, yet enthusiastic nonetheless.

On May 19, 2002 the final episode, “The Truth” aired. In that episode, Mulder rejoins the cast after a year-

long hiatus. He is arrested for the murder of one of the government’s super-soldiers. After he is sentenced to death by a military tribunal, Scully and a few others help him escape.

They then search for a wise man who also happens to be the Smoking Man. He explains that he is hiding out to escape colonization that is to happen on December 22, 2012. After Mulder and Scully leave, the hillside where the Smoking Man resides is blown to pieces in an attempt to kill Mulder.

Though the miniseries will only consist of six episodes, three out of the six episodes are written and directed by Chris Carter who worked on the original series. The other three episodes were a collaborative effort

by Glen Morgan, Darin Morgan and James Wong who were also veterans of the series.

What makes this revival even better is while there are a lot of new faces behind the camera, the main, original and well-loved cast members will be back. Both David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are reprising their roles as Mulder and Scully. Mitch Pileggi will be back as Walter Skinner and the Smoking Man played by William B. Davis will also be making an appearance.

x-files Some of the new but familiar faces include Joel McHale of “Community,” Robbie Amell of “The Flash,” Lauren Ambrose of “Six Feet Under” and Annet Mahendru of “The Americans.”

The first reviews of the series came out earlier last week. The episode “My Struggle” has not received rave reviews.

“Yet even if the right sentiment is there, the premiere hour of The XFiles’ 6-episode revival will turn some believers into skeptics,” the website, Den of Geek, stated. The writer admits that there is a lot that a first episode has to include when coming back after 14 years.

Even amongst disparaging criticism, there is a common theme: hope.

Hope that after the first icebreaker episode has passed, the series will get on and up. As Joanna Robinson of Vanity Fair said, “…I want to believe.”

“The X-Files” miniseries is scheduled for a two-night premiere on FOX beginning Sunday, January 24 at 10 p.m. and on Monday, January 25 at 8 p.m. The remaining four episodes will occupy this time slot.

“You won’t see me wearing stilettos around,” Mitcham said.

Her rule of thumb when confronting her closet after oversleeping an alarm is to choose a pair of leggings, a sweater, a scarf and some boots.

Mitcham Mitcham is walking proof that comfort and style are far from incompatible. A cropped jacket was left unzipped to reveal a widestriped sweater. She wore kneehigh grey boots fitted over true

blue jeans. Simple silver jewelry, a patterned purse and a maroon scarf brought her outfit to a smooth conclusion. She sets the base for her self-described “eclectic” style by matching pieces that “normally wouldn’t go together.”

Those pieces include selections from her impressive collection of boots and scarves, which she regularly puts to good use.

Mitcham’s daughters, who also attend ODU, keep an eye out for trends, but she follows a different path. Mitcham has watched her style evolve over the years to become more her own.

“It has become less of what the crowd is wearing,” Mitcham said.

The team will face Western Kentucky University in a home game on Thursday, Jan. 21, and Marshall on Saturday, Jan. 23 at the TED. The Women’s team will also play WKU and Marshall in two away games.

SUPERBOWL EDGES CLOSER Wildcard weekend has come and gone, leaving four teams closer to the superbowl. The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Houston Texans 30-0. The Pittsburgh Steelers just barely survived against the Cincinnati Bengals, winning 18-16. The Seattle Seahawks were defeated by the Carolina Panthers, 31-24..

During last week’s wild cards games the Green Bay Packers defeated the Washington Redskins in a devastating match, with a final score of 35-18.

MONARCHS FALL TO MTSU AT THE BUZZER

After ending their 32 home game winning streak with a loss to conference leader UAB on Thursday night, Old Dominion’s men’s basketball team suffered another tight loss to Middle Tennessee State in the Ted Constant Center on Saturday afternoon.

The match proved to be a defensive battle between the conference foes with Old Dominion leading at the half 26-24-- the lowest mark at a half for MTSU this season and the third lowest for the Monarchs. ODU got off to a slow start, failing to score in the first five minutes of the game and on their first seven possessions until Aaron Bacote nailed a 3-point jumper just before 15 minutes to put the Monarchs on the board.

From there until the end of the half, the game got closer as the Monarchs continued to give themselves chances by dominating the offensive glass and grabbing eight offensive rebounds.

Freshman Zoran Talley tipped in a missed jumper by Freeman to end the half and give Old Dominion a 2-point lead.

Free throw shooting was a glaring issue for both teams for such a close game with the Monarchs shooting 16-25 and the Blue Raiders only making 10-20. Foul trouble kept the Monarchs in a bind with both Freeman and Denzel Taylor accruing four apiece, while sophomore forward Brandon Stith had five including a technical in the middle of the second half.

Trey Freeman finished the game tying his career high of 28 points with help from freshman Talley who had 11 points and nine rebounds. Stith was also a factor on defense, gathering four blocks before entering foul trouble. Forward Darnell Harris led scoring for MTSU, opening the game with a 3-point jumper and finishing with 19 points. Edward Simpson, also a major factor in the Blue Raiders, took back the lead in the second half scoring 14 points off the bench.

With a few missed free throws in the final minutes, the match remained close when Trey Freeman, who had been double teamed for a majority of the game, hit a 3-point jumper to bring the score within two. After MTSU’s Edward Simpson hit one of two free throws, Freeman kicked the final shot out to Talley whose 3-point shot fell short of tying the score and gave the Blue Raiders the win. Both Talley and Freeman described the game in the postgame interview as a “dogfight.”

After the game, head coach Jeff Jones discussed how the game wasn’t necessarily an issue of effort.

“It’s not about working harder, it’s about working smarter,” said Jones.

Jones avoided commenting on any specific examples, though it wasn’t hard to recall Stith’s technical in the second half.

“We’ll come back in Monday focused and ready to watch film. We just can’t be coming in with a hangover of sorts,” Jones said.

“I think it would be hard for him to not know how important he is to this team. He did some good things tonight, but he had some things to work on as well. He’ll continue to improve as a talent on this team as he continues to gain confidence,” Jones said.

Old Dominion fell to 2-3 in conference standings and sits at 9-9 overall-- the middle of the pack of C-USA. Middle Tennessee rose to third in the conference at 4-1 and improved to 12-5 overall on the season.

The Monarchs next face Western Kentucky at home on Thursday hoping to restore winning back to the Ted.

The rise of low-cost 3D printers at the consumer level has led 3D printing to rise to what some call one of the emerging technologies of the past couple of years. While some industries have been using 3D printers for quite some time; the availability of low-cost printers like the well-reviewed Wiiboox ONE MINI 3D printer for about $1,000 on Amazon has allowed such technologies to be affordable for entrepreneurs and small-business owners alike.

Desktop 3D printers are among the fastest-growing category of product on crowd-funding site Kickstarter. A report published by Allied Market Research predicted that the 3D printing market will reach $8.6 billion by the end of this decade.

Taylor’s position at the Strome Entrepreneurial Center has proven to be quite useful while launching his startup company. He is extremely involved with entrepreneurial programs and initiatives both on and off campus and often volunteers to speak at high schools about the importance and value of entrepreneurship.

“The College of Business and the Strome Entrepreneurial Center provide a great amount of resources to entrepreneurial students,” said Taylor, “however they have not quite mastered their

approach to pushing students to being entrepreneurs.”

Every technology comes with its downfalls.

In the case of 3D printing technology, there are concerns among law enforcement officials that these 3D printers will allow citizens to get a hold of custom-built weapons at ease. There have been cases in the United States, England and Australia of public safety officials finding 3D printed weapons in suspects’ homes.

“I think for military purposes this is amazing, but in the normal home, I do not think that this should be legal,” Taylor said. “With that being said, I do not believe that this will be something that becomes too big of a threat due to the fact that most 3D printers only create plastic products which are not for long term use when used as a gun.”

Ross Reelachart Technology Editor With 2015 in the books, we look forward to what the new year will hold for the gaming community.

Looking back, last year turned out to be a year of upsets and minor problems. Although major AAA game releases were met with good reception overall, few were met with anything close to spectacular or memorable.

It was a year that even good releases such as “Batman: Arkham Knight” and “Metal Gear Solid 5” were marred with genuine, negative criticism and behind-the-scenes meddling. Meanwhile, other big releases received lukewarm responses or lower-than-expected acclaim like “Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate” and the reboot of “Star Wars: Battlefront.”

On the other end of the spectrum, smaller, independent releases, like “Undertale” and “Rocket League,” met immense praise and massive player attention From the little we know of the new year’s releases, 2016 looks likely to be the year of “long development.” Many high profile games that have been announced for 2016, both small and large, have been in the works for a substantial chunk of time–the kind of time that is the antithesis of yearly releases.

“XCOM 2” and “Uncharted 4” will have a chance to showcase what happens when a developer takes their time with a property. It will also be a year for long-in-development independent games to take the stage, such as the Kickstarter favorite, “Mighty No. 9,” and the ambitious “No Man’s Sky.”

XCOM 2: BY FIRAXIS GAMES The follow-up to the award winning reboot of the XCOM series, “XCOM 2” aims to build on the award winning formula of its predecessor, while making refinements and improvements for a much bigger game.

“XCOM 2” picks up after the first XCOM. The narrative begins with the player who failed to prevent the alien invasion in the first game. The titular XCOM is no longer a multi-national cooperation tasked with defending the planet, but is now a rebel guerrilla group trying to fight back against an entrenched alien presence and inspire humanity to fight back.

Players can expect the same punishing difficulty and deep tactical choices as the first XCOM, but with more options for both the players and the enemy. “XCOM 2” releases on Feb. 5.

MIGHTY NO. 9: BY COMCEPT

“Mighty No. 9” made a splash in the gaming community when it was announced by Keiji Inafune who created Mega Man. No longer working with Capcom, who still owned rights to Mega Man, Inafune moved to Kickstarter to fund this new action platformer, which was quickly considered the spiritual successor to the blue bomber.

Funded far beyond Inafune’s original goals and with an experienced game development team behind it, “Mighty No. 9” has become a poster child for how Kickstarter can be used by even big name developers to break free from the corporate publishing system. This route provides developers a way to make the games they want to make, their own way. “Mighty No. 9” releases on Feb. 9.

UNCHARTED 4: A THIEF’S END

BY NAUGHTY DOG GAMES The adventure series protagonist Nathan Drake will come to an end with “Uncharted 4.” The “Uncharted” series has quickly become associated with some of the most exciting and elaborate set pieces and gameplay segments in the industry. The “Uncharted” series shows what happens when a developer dedicates time and effort to polish what would otherwise be a simple, straightforward action-adventure game. In this fourth and final game, Nathan Drake is pulled out of his retirement and treasure hunting by his older brother who was previously thought dead. “Uncharted 4: A Thief ’s End” releases April 26.

BY HELLO GAMES When “No Man’s Sky” premiered at the VGX awards in 2013, it felt like one of the most ambitious games ever for a big studio or the indie studio Hello Games. “No Man’s Sky” purported to procedurally generate an entire galaxy, if not an entire universe, complete with explorable planets and systems. But as more gameplay and demos came out from Hello Games, their claim to over 18 quintillion(1.8 x 10^9) unique planets, complete with flora and fauna that could be named by individual players, seemed to be true. Hopefully when it gets into the hands of players, they will find a true open universe to explore and discover. “No Man’s Sky” releases in June.

STAR FOX ZERO:

BY NINTENDO AND PLATINUM GAMES The last real Star Fox game, “Star Fox Command,” came out on the Nintendo DS in 2006. This newest entry into the long-running Star Fox franchise from Nintendo will hopefully be another great entry into the main line of Nintendo games in the modern era.

While the game sticks close to its roots as an on-rail 3D flying/shooting game, players can be assured that the formula will have refined to be even closer to perfection.

While Lumosity may be the company fined, they are not the only one selling the idea that a person’s memory and cognitive ability can be enhanced by regularly using an app or program suite. Cogmed, CogniFit and Elevate are other apps that purport to train the brain or boost memory similarly to how regular exercise keeps the body physically fit. Like a

gym, these apps are paid services. Unlike a gym, their results are founded on uncertain evidence and marketing jargon.

Although this is one of the first times action has been taken against services like Lumosity, the effectiveness of “brain games” has been questionable for some time in the scientific community. In 2014, a letter of consensus was signed by almost 70 researchers and released by the Stanford Center on Longevity in Califor-

nia and the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin.

The signatories reached the consensus that there was little evidence to support the effectiveness of “brain games” and the research cited by these companies is tangential at best.

Although players may improve in their ability to play the games themselves, the games do not provide any broader, more practical improvement that could be useful in the real world.

Like most science that turns into

mass market products, there is a hint of truth beneath the exaggerations and dubious claims. Though “brain games” are mostly a way to make money off of trumped-up scientific claims, there is serious study being conducted in the field of brain training. But without the evidence to back up claims, researchers will remain skeptical. Most encourage physical exercise to enhance brain activity, which has some scientific backing.

VIDEO GAME REVIEW: UNDERTALE

Audra Reigle Contributing Writer As a human in a world of monsters who want your soul, the “Undertale” player has two choices: befriend the monsters or fight them. That’s about all that can be said about the game as saying too much more might ruin the experience and the discovery of everything the game world has to offer.

With that said, there are some aspects of “Undertale” worth reviewing.

Choices made throughout the game determine the ending the player receives. A genocide ending is received by attacking and killing all of the monsters encountered within the game while a pacifist run is achieved by the opposite– befriending all of the enemies encountered. The neutral ending is obtained by a combination of defeating enemies as well as befriending them. It is possible to defeat all enemies within the game as well as befriend all enemies.

The battle system in the game is unique. The player does not necessarily have to fight the enemies in

order to win the battle, but can be as passive or as aggressive as desired. In addition to the player’s choices, the enemies also have a variety of moves, which the player must use different tactics to defeat. Every battle is different and the player must use various strategies to defeat the enemies and avoid their attacks. Some of the battles will throw something new at the player. Once introduced, it can reappear in future fights.

Puzzles in the game are not super difficult. A person who is bad with puzzles could still get through this game with minimal problems. Although there are a handful of harder puzzles, they can still be completed.

Some of the boss battles may be more difficult than the puzzles.

The music in this game is wonderful. In the battles, it’s somewhat reminiscent of the music in the Pokemon games.

While the music and the gameplay are unique, the game itself can be difficult to get into. An initial playthrough could take only a mat-

ter of hours if the player gets into the game. The game; however, lacks a lot of story. Although the game shouldn’t be spoiled for future players, the only real spoilers are gameplay features and interactions with other characters. It can be really cut and dry without a strong storyline. The fact that the player is a human in a world of monsters is the main plot element, and it’s pretty much thrown in the player’s face early on.

If the player can really get into the game, then they’ll have a blast with it. If the player can’t really get into it, then it could take days or months to complete a first runthrough. Of course, this is all also dependent on how much running around and exploring the player does, but the whole game is about running around, fighting monsters and exploring the world, which can get boring quick.

While there are players who just can’t get into the game due to the lack of story, there are others who have greatly enjoyed “Undertale” with what story it has and the characters

met while playing. The player is only a human, but can interact with the monsters in the world. While there are the monsters that want to kill the player for their soul, there are also others who want to befriend. The player can go out for lunch with one of the monsters and another monster has a crush on the player. Each character is unique and defeating them in battle changes the interactions the player has with future characters they meet.

The game essentially changes based on how the player chooses to play.

People have been captivated by this game because of its story and its characters. While the main plot behind the story is that the player is a human in a world of monsters, it’s so much more than that. It’s a game in which the player can make choices and those choices affect how the rest of the game turns out. The game will either fill the player with emotion (and/or determination), or the player won’t be able to enjoy the game because they can’t get into it.

INCUBATION TECHNOLOGIES

Greg Tomchick and Adam Datsko are two students at ODU who are starting their own business aiming to provide similar aid that they’ve received from the university to help other businesses. They said their goal is to pursue the spirit of entrepreneurship with their own company while giving back to the community and getting in on the ground floor of Norfolk’s growth.

With the help and mentorship of the Strome center, they dared to startup their own company. With Tomchick as the CEO and Datsko as the CFO, they created Incubation Technologies, based in Norfolk.

Tomchick drew upon his own personal experiences for the process of

delivering what a client wants. As a website development company for other startups, Incubation Technologies provides the tools and knowledge necessary in order to get a new business off the ground.

Much like how Tomchick and Datsko were aided by ODU, Incubation Technologies can provide a roadmap and information for people who may not be familiar with the business and financial processes of creating a company.

Creating a startup in a place like Norfolk is not just a way for them to make their own futures, but as a way to grow the community. The students said they hope to help create jobs and offer ways for others to gain experience and growth.

Opinion

Like many of the other startups with origins at ODU, Incubation Technologies is a small company with only nine employees including Tomchick and Datsko. With the experience and help gained from the Strome center and their own drive to succeed, Incubation Technologies is already looking at a bright future.

Of the nine employees, six of them are overseas in New Delhi, India, and the company already has a healthy list of current and past clients. Giving more than just a “business-client” relationship, Tomchick wanted more personal interaction.

He prefers face-to-face communication in order to get the proper vision the client desires.

Aside from wanting to remain local, the student duo chose to attend ODU because they wanted a college

and a community that had room to grow and expand. Datsko sought out a business program and Tomchick eventually found the resources available at the Strome Center. Tomchick specifically named the Department of Management instructor, James Lant, as a source of aid and his “mentor.”

“College builds the foundation for a student’s future by meeting people,” Tomchick said.

Datsko agreed and emphasized the faculty’s ability to give one-on-one time with students, the many connections to be made and hands-on experience to be gained outside the classroom environment. Tomchick said that as high schools begin pushing business and finance, colleges should do the same.

Both students were emphatic in

their support of the Strome Entrepreneurial Center and suggested other students use their services.

“Even if you don’t make a startup yourself, you can still learn a lot,” Datsko said.

Tomchick added that the skills learned in the program can easily be applied to already established businesses.

Emphasizing how fast Incubation Technologies is growing and how much Tomchick and Datsko wish to give back to students and the community, Incubation is offering internships.

They are looking for interns interested in website and app development, as well as sales and marketing.

LETTER FROM AN ADJUNCT FACULTY MEMBER

Old Dominion students are preparing for a new semester, and with them, their instructors. Unfortunately, not all instructors will be allowed to return to work. I am one of those.

Presently, I work for both ODU and a community college, which I choose not to name. I was told via email by my department chair here at ODU, just days before Christmas, that the one class I was assigned to teach was being taken away from me and given to a “full-time” instructor. The community college never bothered to contact me at all. It would have been hard enough to pay bills and living expenses with only one class, a monthly salary amounting to around $760, but now I am left with nothing—neither the university nor community college I work for has need of me. Even though I am “employed,” I have no income. When I informed the chair of my department that losing my income would amount to losing my car and home, I was given a stock reply with no sympathy. They simply did not care.

There is a prevalent and distressing problem in higher education, which many students, as well as the general population, remain unaware. The problem is this: in most instances, in the majority of university and college campuses, the bulk of teaching faculties are adjunct instructors. Adjunct instructors are contracted, yet not guaranteed work from one semester to the next. Often, we adjunct faculty are only allowed part-time work and must work at multiple institutions or other businesses to make ends meet, as they say.

I’ve even begun to sell blood plasma twice a week to pay my current bills. I do not live lavishly. I live in an urban apartment, as cheap as I could get, and drive a used car. I do not allow myself the luxury of a social life, as that comes with expenses.

In education, adjunct instructors such as myself are allowed no job security. Even as we carry the bulk of higher education on our shoulders—we teach the general education classes, those classes tenured faculties largely do not teach—we are considered disposable workers. Adjunct faculty take on large class loads, commuting from institution to institution, working out of our cars and temporary shared offices, in order to meet the needs of our students. We are disposable, but we are the faculty majority. We are no less committed to our jobs, or less qualified, than our tenured or full time counterparts. Yet, unlike them, we have no value to the institutes we work for.

The solution is one of respect and human decency. Adjunct instructors deserve to be treated as professionals and as people, and most of all as assets to the institutions we work within.

Higher education institutions need to rework their “disposable faculty” perception and understand that we are people, too. We should be guaranteed at least one class every semester, one class to balance our meager budgets on. It is not asking for much, only the permission to work the job that we are qualified and hired to do. The ivory tower is tall and seemingly impenetrable, but department heads should view us as people with our own financial needs. For some of us, our lives depend on it.
