Veterans Day Events Throughout Hampton Roads T.J. Thompson Staff Writer With Hampton Roads’ rich military history, it is with great honor to share information regarding events commemorating Veterans Day 2016. This article is not a conclusive list, yet highlights some of the many events going on around the area honoring veterans. Nov. 11, 1918, is regarded as the day “the war to end all wars” concluded. This was achieved by an armistice agreement to end fighting between Allied and German forces. Seven

months later the Treaty of Versailles would be signed officially ending WWI. President Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11, 1919 as Armistice Day in America. 35 years later President Eisenhower proclaimed this date as Veterans Day, which would be a day to remember all of America’s veterans. ODU will observe Veterans Day Thursday, Nov. 10, 12:30 p.m. on Kaufman Mall (rain location will be North Mall in Webb Center). Attendees are encouraged to RSVP at odu.imodules.com/vet16 or call 757683-3116. Donations of toiletries are

The award is based off the academic quality of the program, as well as the affordability of each class. Degrees on the list make sure that no school goes over $15,000 for the doctorate degree. ODU’s ‘Academic Strength’ ranked at 64 percent, while their annual tuition was ranked at $7,740. The rating included both online and in-person classes at the university. President Broderick Receives “Impacting Lives” Award ODU president John R. Broderick was among the nine citizens of the Hampton Roads to receive the “Impacting Lives” Award from “The New Journal and Guide,” a local newspaper. President Broderick was recognized for his commitment to the community and diversity. While being presented the award, presenters said Broderick was “known on and off the campus for leadership in forging at Old Dominion, solving real-world problems.” Global Café Holding Event on Indonesian Culture The Office of Intercultural Relations is holding another Global Café event, this time representing Indonesia. The event will be held at the intercultural Center in the Webb Center on Nov. 15 from 12:30-2 p.m. and will have guest speaker Dr. Kurnia Foe. The event will have conversation about the traditions and culture of Indonesia, while also discussing a Study Abroad trip taking place to Indonesia held by ODU faculty members. Virginia Senator Talks about Marijuana Decriminalization Tommy Norment, a Virginia Senator, spoke on Tuesday about supporting the research done with the decriminalization of marijuana. He spoke at Slover Library during a Norfolk City Council dinner. He requested that the Virginia State Crime Commission consider researching the issue. “I think it’s absolutely crazy that we continue to lock people up for possession of a modest amount of marijuana,” Norment said.

History of Veterans Day SaiJai Miller Contributing Writer Veterans Day is a day set aside to commemorate the service of American military veterans. The first recognition of Veterans Day as a national observance began with President Wilson on Nov. 11, 1919. Nov 11, at that period in time, was known as Armistice Day through the Act of 1938. The day was named “Armistice” in an effort to persuade reflection and promotion towards peace throughout the world. The Act of 1938 formally created Nov. 11 as a federal holiday, to honor veterans of The Great War, which historians would later rename World War I. The U.S. has a long history of military action engaging in war overseas and at home. Times of war create a complex state of affairs for countries. During the 20th century, the U.S. had engaged in WWI (1914-1918), World War II (1939-1945) and the Korean War (1950-1953). As the U.S. began to enter WWII in 1945, this call-to-

action moved the American public to offer reverence to its military members. Various veterans service organizations lobbied Congress to alter the Act of 1938 by replacing “Armistice” with “Veterans.” This modification enabled the holiday to recognize and pay homage to military service members of every war the country engaged in. It is noted that a divergent event occurred in regards to when the country would celebrate Veterans Day during the '60s and '70s. In an effort to enable families to spend more time together, allow Americans to visit national parks, generally enjoy life as well as offering federal employees time off from work, a three-day holiday break was created in the form of Uniform Holiday Bill. The Uniform Holiday Bill was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on June 28, 1968, and went into effect on Jan. 1, 1971. The bill, in one piece of legislation, created national recognition of Columbus Day, and permitted Washington’s Birthday, Memorial

Day, Veterans Day and Columbus Day to be celebrated on Mondays. Celebrating these four holidays on a Monday would guarantee government employees extended leave from Saturday through Monday, without interruption initiating a three-day vacation or three-day holiday. Undesirably, the bill did not cement unison in the celebration of all four holidays. Thus, Congress restored Veterans Day on Sept. 18, 1975 where President Ford signed Public Law 94-97 on Sept. 20, 1975. This legislative act re-established the well-known observance of November 11 in 1978 of Veterans Day. Presently, federal work spaces will close in honor of the holiday the preceding Friday or following Monday, dependent on the calendar date of Veterans Day. The November time frame of the holiday is venerated by past and present service members. Source: U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

ODU Celebrates Native American Heritage Month

SaiJai Miller Contributing Writer

Members of the Osage Nation of Oklahoma, guests of the Nansemond Indian Tribe of Virginia, visited ODU on Nov. 1, 2016. The visit marked the beginning of Native American Heritage Month, also referred to as American Indian History Month. Chris and Cindy Bowman came to ODU to inform, celebrate and invite Monarchs to participate in the national observance. One way to connect with this culture would be to attend a Pow-Wow. Pow-Wows are celebrations of Native American culture and often open to the public. Chris shared his motivation to expose others to Native American art, which was displayed. Included were style flutes traditionally used by men to court women, fans used by dancers to

illustrate their dance used to cool off, jewelry and Ledger Art. Chris shared the history about style flutes where a man would show his romantic affection by creating a flute for a woman. The flute would only be played for her and if she rejected him, the flute would be destroyed. Cindy spoke about her family’s history. Her great-grandmother was forced into one of the American Indian Boarding Schools where Indian culture was not allowed to thrive. The children were given ledger books, and these were used to draw or create art. This was a painful experience for many Native American families during the 1900s where it was feared to speak or teach about their culture. Cindy appreciates the opportunity to share her story with others while educating the next generation of Americans.

“You want to be understood and do not want to be insulted," Cindy said. She lamented that the media does not cover Native American issues, including American Indian Heritage Month. She then discussed the protest in North Dakota where Indigenous people have invited other Americans and members of the public to protest the creation of a pipeline on tribal land, in violation of historical treaties. “Embellishments can occur on both sides of political issues and it is important to research the topic,” the Bowmans said, suggesting that the public “learn more about American Indians by region," Chris divulged that Oklahoma translated from Choctaw means ‘home of the red man.’ In Oklahoma, assimilation had already occurred with the arrival of the French. This

locale was formally educated by the French. Trade routes were established that remain to present day, although under different names. During the 1800s, European culture became assimilated into the region. In 1830, the Indian Removal Act removed Indians from their original lands to the West and some Tribes migrated to Canada. The U.S. Government, under the Department of Interior Affairs, now under the Office of Indian Affairs, managed the American Indian population where the Bowmans reason the “Mindset of the government that Indians are equivalent to animals.” Other community members were on-hand participants of ODU’s observance including Dr. Helen Rountree, Kimberly Epperson, Bill Rogers, and Lee Lockamy. Lockamy was presented with a proclamation from

Virginia Beach the evening of Nov. 1, recognizing the Nansemond Tribe as the official tribe of Virginia. The Nansemond are documented as being in Virginia before the English arrived in the 1600s. Rogers is an honorary member of the Nansemond Tribe. Epperson, who is not part of the tribe, shares portions of her proceeds with the tribe. Dr. Rountree provided handouts on the Nansemond Tribe and the Indian Tribes of Virginia and gave instruction to event attendees on how to create Dreamcatchers. “My friend texted me [about the event, today.] I have Indian background from the James and York Rivers [region] and wanted to learn more about that part of my ancestry,” Leah Johnson said, who came to the event to learn about the Dreamcatchers.

Rent Ready Coming to ODU

Rent Ready Norfolk, a new program to help renters and landlords improve living conditions in communities in the Norfolk area, is coming to ODU’s campus to hold events for students and residents alike. According to Lauren Lowrey, a management analyst in the Department of Neighborhood Development, the city has talked to student organizations to bring together different events that will help educate and aid renters and landlords.

“These events are opportunities for students to come out and tell us their problems so that we can provide help or resolutions for whatever they are facing,” Lowrey said. Events include Rent Ready Norfolk Pop-Up Centers, a series of informational sessions about knowing the rights that renters have, and also Walk and Talks around the area. RRN Pop-Up Centers will be held in the front lobby of the Webb every Thursday during activity hour until Dec. 1. Students will be able to report any rental issues or problems, ask questions and receive advice or

resolutions to their problems. Students may also learn about the other aspects of the Rent Ready program, the Office for Off-Campus Student Life, other information regarding renting and crime and fire prevention. The informational sessions that the Department of Neighborhood Development and ODU’s Office for Off-Campus Student Life will be holding are to take place in the Webb Center during activity hour. Students will discuss various topics each week about their rights and being “rent ready” before signing a

lease. During some of the sessions, there will be a lawyer present to answer any questions or concerns. Free pizza will also be offered. Finally, there will be Walk and Talks with the ODU Police Department conducted on the first day of each month, where students can join in on discussions about Rent Ready Norfolk, crime prevention and other resources the ODU Police Department provides. The walks will go around neighborhoods such as Highland Park, Lamberts Point, Edgewater and Keningston. RRN also plans to give brief in-

formational presentations to various student organizations about the Good Neighbor Campaign and what they can do around campus to make students more engaged and a part of the surrounding community. Students should join in on Rent Ready Norfolk to become better neighbors and educated renters plus improving the quality of ODU’s offcampus life. They're next scheduled event is " My Landlord Didn’t Fix It: What To Do Next?" on Nov. 29 in the Future Monarch Room.

Mental Health and the LGBTQ+ Community Talk Petra Rich Contributing Writer

Dr. Alex Dryden and ODU’s Safe Space organization hosted a lecture on the mental health issues facing the LGBTQ+ community on Oct. 25 in the River Rooms of the Webb Center. Dr. Dryden is a psychologist in the ODU counseling services department and a member of the LGBTQ+ community. “As a marginalized population, we face different levels and types of discrimination,” Dryden said. The lecture identified these different types of discrimination and the ways they affect the mental and physical health of those who identify as LGBTQ+. Dryden discussed how the LGBTQ+ community is three times more likely to face discrimination than the general population. This can lead to depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), suicidal ideation, substance abuse

and self-medication. Stemming from fears of facing ostracization, prejudice and harassment, these diseases can be detrimental to the lives of those who identify as LGBTQ+. LGBTQ+ discrimination can come from peers, strangers, medical professionals, employers or even other LGBTQ+ community members. “I didn’t want to tell my health professional I was gay because I didn’t want him to give me an HIV test,” Dryden said, reflecting upon the time during the '80s and '90s when HIV and AIDS were heavily associated with being gay. Although times have changed, discrimination from medical professionals is still faced for some such as Dryden’s partner whose doctor stopped their appointment to pray upon finding out his sexual orienta-

tion. Dryden identified that coming out versus concealing their identity is a dilemma for many who are LGBTQ+. Youth LGBTQ+ are five times for likely to experience bullying for being open about their sexuality. 30 percent of teen suicides are related to sexual identity crisis and fear of hatred or prejudice due to LGBTQ+ identification. Suicide is also the leading cause of death for the LGBTQ+ community, ages 10 to 24. Another problem Dryden identified is the major substance abuse problems that LGBTQ+ community members face. 20 to 30 percent of these members abuse substances and 25 percent abuse alcohol. These numbers are shocking compared to the 5-10 percent of the general population that suffers from substance

"You’re damaging that person by not choosing to respect their gender identity"

Introducing 'Gymmie'

Saamia Aslam Contributing Writer

Joaquin Haney Chacon III collaborated with Max Hall to develop an application called Gymmie which makes the process of finding a gym partner much easier. A gym partner is someone who helps you and pushes you to complete your workout even when you’re tired and someone who teaches you new workouts, motivates you and makes getting fit fun. Trying to find a workout partner whose schedule and workout plan works with yours is a hassle. Your friends, classmates or significant other may be too busy to workout with you or may not have the same workout plan as you. Chacon was inspired to create the application after he transferred to ODU from Virginia Tech. Back at VT he had a steady gym partner and was very close to achieving his fitness

goals. However, after transferring to ODU he had a hard time finding someone to go to the gym with him. His friends at ODU had schedules and goals that were incompatible with his own. It was then that he had the idea to create an application to make the process of finding a gym buddy easier. His vision was to create an app so that no one else would have to face the struggle of trying to find a workout partner. He talked with Max Hall and convinced his new friend to work together to start the development of the Gymmie App. The Gymmie team consists of Chacon and Hall who are the cofounders. Avinash Gosavi is the chief backend engineer. Blake Rogers is the chief IOS engineer. Michael Freeman is the chief android engineer. Iris Actherhof and Cameron Butler are the marketing interns. The application makes it easy

The Mace & Crown

to match up with people who have similar preferences, schedules and workouts with you. It helps you find people in your area who have fitness goals similar yours so that can work towards them together. The way the app works is that it allows you to add a workout and see who else has made a similar workout and allows you to match with them. After matching, you are able to invite them to workout with you. If they accept, you are then able to chat with them and create a schedule. An event will be created in the calendar to help keep track of workout days and progress. You can sign up for the app using your Facebook or email. Currently the app allows the user to input schedules and workouts and is designed for iPhones. The long term goal is to have the app schedule classes such as yoga, CrossFit and Pilates for the user and their workout partner. The Gymmie beta was launched on Nov. 2 for iPhone. ODU students have early access to this version of the app which will help them utilize the app to create workouts and find buddies to go work out at the Student Rec Center or the University Village Gym. The app is for anyone who is looking to go to the gym and wanting to get in shape, but need someone to go with them. It is for people who are too intimidated to go to the gym alone or need some inspiration.

@maceandcrown

abuse. “Many people tell me it’s easier to just get high because they don’t have to think about the problems they’re facing,” Dryden said, “but I tell them these problems have to go somewhere. They can’t just be ignored.” Dryden also pointed out that it is essential to respect and support all members of the LGBTQ+ community whether or not there is personal involvement. Many bisexual and transgender individuals are not taken seriously and face discrimination for "not knowing what they want." “You’re damaging that person [who identifies as transgender] by

not choosing to respect their gender identity,” Dryden said. The final topic discussed was domestic violence within the LGBTQ+ culture. 3.6 percent of lesbians and 3.1 percent of gay males report relationship violence. However, the legal definition of domestic violence mainly excludes LGBTQ+ relationships. With the lack of support and representation the LGBTQ+ community faces, the main message that Dryden wants to get across is that people do not have to go through things alone. “Don’t feel like you have to do everything on your own. Counseling services are here 24/7.”

This Week in History

Justin L.C. Ross Contributing Writer

As fall progresses and the holiday season draws closer, many are reminded of the numerous historical traditions that are shared by different cultures. As this author was reminded by a friend recently, “traditions help keep memories alive," and that truth could not be more selfevident than during the holiday season. Therefore, let the shared memories and traditions of the many cultures on campus serve as a reminder of the deeper historical connectivity of the present time. November 10, 1969 The groundbreaking children’s television show that has defined many generations of Americans, “Sesame Street," debuts on the Public Broadcasting Service. November 11, 1918 On the eleventh minute, during the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, on the eleventh month and on the fourth year of war… the war to end all wars, known as the First World War effectively ends. November 14, 1908 Albert Einstein presents his quantum light theory to the world and changes the very course of human history and understanding. November 15, 1960 Marking a new era in international relations and the broadening horizons of the cold war, the first submarine armed with nuclear weapons, the USS George Washington departs on its first Atlantic voyage from Charleston, South Carolina. November 16, 1945 In a controversial decision to utilize German knowledge after WWII against the growing Soviet threat, 88 Nazi scientists arrive in the U.S. Despite connections to the holocaust and war crimes, the U.S. Government utilizes these scientists to further its jet aircraft and space engineering research and development. One of these scientists would soon become instrumental to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Wernher von Braun. Source: historynet.com

'The Burial at Thebes' Comes to ODU's Goode Theater

Kevin Washington Contributing Writer

Coming this week at the Goode Theater, the ODU Theatre Department will be presenting one of their biggest plays of the year: “The Burial at Thebes.” Originally written by Seamus Heaney and directed for ODU by Steve Earley, the student-run project is an observation between human rights and the belief in security of the state. The play is set during ancient times in the beautiful city of Thebes. Antigone, the daughter of Oedipus, is the main character of the story. Antigone learns the brutal details that her brothers, Polyneices and Eteocles,

have killed each other while fighting on opposing sides of a bloody civil war. Creon, the newly appointed King and Antigone’s uncle, crowns Eteocles a brave war hero for fighting for his homeland. Meanwhile, Polyneices is ordered to rot and remain festering on the battlefield, considered a traitor to his homeland and family. King Creon mandates that anyone who defies his order will be made an example of for helping a traitor. Going against the King’s judgment, Antigone gets caught defying the mandate and is punished by being cast into a cave and left for dead. The play shines light on Antigone’s eternal struggle with whether she should defy the order of the new,

The play also shadows the age-old interaction of men versus women. Earley’s 2004 “The Burial at Thebes” is based on the Greek tragedy, “Antigone,” by Sophocles. The play is making its traction in theaters all over the world. The play was first produced for the Abbey Theatre in London and has been shown in the Globe Theatre. After being all over the world, “The Burial at Thebes” is now gracing ODU. Harry Danby discussed his hand

in the play and how excited he is for the show to take off. Danby will be acting in as Eteocles, a noble king who will be seen in the very forefront of the play. He will also be reciting chorus commentary throughout the play. Over the last couple of months, Danby has developed a great bond with his fellow cast mates, having spent numerous hours practicing and helping each other with their lines. He is excited for the premiere, making the joke that he hopes not to get stage fright. Even so, he seems to display the utmost confidence in his performance and will be ready when the bright lights hit him. Danby is a senior with a deep passion for film and cinematography. During his first au-

dition, he didn’t think he would get the part. However, he won over the casting director with his skills. According to Danby, the play is “a stunning glimpse into patriarchy love and honor for family.” It’s easy to see that the Theatre Department works extremely hard on these productions. They take many pieces of the puzzle to put together some amazing performances, not only for ODU students and staff but for the community of Norfolk as well. “The Burial at Thebes” premieres Nov. 9 and will run until Nov. 19 at the Goode Theatre. Tickets are on sale now.

Frank Turner and the Sleeping Souls Awaken The NorVa

Michael McCann Contributing Writer

The NorVa was alive on a sleepy night before Halloween with Frank Turner and the Sleeping Souls playing to an eager crowd. The show's atmosphere was much like his previous shows, with bombastic sing-along and frank onstage banter with the crowd. British folk singer Will Varley opened the night discussing his time in Norfolk and Chrysler Museum of Art. He then played a five-song set. One of the songs was based on a suggestion of cats by the audience to the tune of Johnny Cash's "A Boy Named Sue." Arkells, a Canadian rock band, followed up as the second opening act. They amped the crowd with songs from their newest album, "Morning Report." At one point during the act, leader singer Max Kerman left the stage and started singing while in the crowd. It was then time for Frank Turner and the Sleeping Souls to take the stage. They started right into two consecutive songs, "I Knew Prufrock Before He Got Famous" and "The Next Storm." Once the band caught their breath, Frank Turner noted that this was their 1,970th show. Frank Turner played in Norfolk

at Chrysler Hall in June earlier this year. He reminisced about being able to swear in a sailor for reenlistment before he left for sea duty. He found that event to be one of the most memorable times of his touring career. He continued on with the show noting all of the injuries that he has amassed during his prolific career. He told an anecdote about his doctor telling him to stop jumping up and down on stage. He disagreed with the doctor and said that he would continue performing so he could entertain his fans. Throughout the night, Turner and his opening acts referred to their concert the night before in Morgantown, West Virginia. He often teased the crowd saying that West Virginia was the best Virginia. He was also bemused that West Virginia was easily able to secede from Virginia with no supposed permission. The tour is correlated with his latest album, "Positive Songs for Negative People." The album, which received a mixed reaction from critics, has become popu-

lar with his large following of fans. Turner's energy continued to permeate through the crowd with "Essex Boy" and "Wanderlust." The crowd was peppered with fans that wore Turner's shirts from previous shows. As the night wore down, Turner played more music from his highest charting album in the U.S., "Tape Deck Heart." Songs like "Recovery" and "Four Simple Words" helped close out the night that boasted a 22-song set list. A mixed crowd of fans, young and old, continued to sing along. Turner recently performed at the world famous "Reading and Leeds Festival" for a record 10th time. This is a testament, not only of the profuse touring that he has dedicated much of his career to, but the dedication of his fans. His longevity will continue as he nears his 2,000th live performance.

‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show' Tyler Passarge Staff Writer On Oct. 28, a large crowd gathered outside of the Naro Expanded Cinema for the “Rocky Horror Picture Show.” Although people went in time for the Halloween weekend, the “Rocky Horror Show” is a tradition that has been played year-round at the Naro Theater for 40 years. Since its premiere in 1975, “Rocky Horror Picture Show” has gained a cult status for its carnivalesque, stageshow-like production that writer Richard O’ Brien created in the vein of B-level horror movies. Hardly considered a hit during its initial release, the musical quickly found a second life through midnight showings that have since taken the world by storm The film centers on a newly engaged couple who are left stranded in

a rainstorm due to a flat tire. Hoping to find help in a nearby mansion, the couple unwittingly find themselves in the middle of chaotic festivities ran by the eccentric Dr. Frank-N-Furter. While the film isn’t really regarded for its plot, the catchy musical numbers have left their mark on today’s culture. Some people in Hampton Roads would be surprised to find that one of those notorious midnight showings takes place in Norfolk. The show, ran by a group of volunteers called Fishnet, Inc., has been performing at the Naro Expanded Cinema for 40 years. Those who have never been to this social phenomenon should be warned of its off-the-wall procedures. When people first walk into the theater, workers for the show go around asking audience members if it is their first showing. First time attendees, or “Vir-

gins,” as the cast refers them to, are marked with a “V” on their forehead in red lipstick. Before the show can officially begin, Virgins have to be “initiated” into the show. This initiation involves newcomers to come up on stage, introduce themselves by name to the audience and bend over for a complementary spanking. Cast and crew leader, Andy, admits that the first moment can be initially intimidating, but he assures potential audience members that it is all in good fun. Once all spankings have been dispensed, the lights go down, the cast take their places on stage and the show begins. A showing of “Rocky Horror” consists of actors mimicking the characters on screen and mouthing the lines to the movies. Members of the group, often dressed as characters from the movie, walk through

the aisles of the theater heckling the movie as it plays out. During many of the musical numbers in the movie, the cast and crew use low budget spectacle to recreate the elaborate set pieces that play out on screen. During the performance of the song “Time Warp,” the most popular song of the movie, cast members demand the audience to stand up. As the song plays on screen, cast members direct the audience on how to do the dance that accompanies the song. During the halfway point of the show, crew members signal to the audience that it is time for the underwear run. Audience members, as long as they are eighteen or over, can volunteer to step out of the theater and strip down to their underwear in the lobby. A crew member then sends the volunteers out into the theater to

run up and down the aisles twice. Other outlandish occurrences during the show include a bag of props that can be used during certain points of the movie. During a scene that involves a rainstorm, audience members are given water that they can shoot into the crowd to mimic the rain storm. This is a show where audience participation is highly encouraged. During the Halloween weekend, Fishnet, Inc. ran their “Rocky Horror” show for three days with a total of four shows. However, this is a show that runs on a monthly basis all year long. The “Rocky Horror Picture Show” plays at 11:30 p.m. every fourth and fifth Friday of the month. The show takes place at the Naro Expanded Cinema located on Colley Avenue. in Norfolk.

Get Trippy with Empire of the Sun

Elizabeth Proffitt Staff Writer

Empire of the Sun dropped their third album, “Two Vines,” on Oct. 28. With an album fit for a psychedelic fever dream, they did not disappoint. The band explores new sounds and themes while managing to connect with their past by including a remix of their most popular song, “Walking on a Dream,” which debuted in 2008. Empire of the Sun consists of Sydney natives Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore. On “Two Vines,” the duo collaborated with Lindsey Buckingham from Fleetwood Mac, as well as Wendy Melvoin, who is known for her work with Prince & the Revolution. The first track, “Before,” sets a lush tone using beachy imagery and equally shimmery vocals. The mellow song starts the album off slow, but musically it sets up the album. The duo rely heavily on this beachy imagery to start off the song. They sing, “It’s a new wave crashing in the ocean / Infinity, crystal creation / Memory whisper over water / Come

with me, let's be like the ocean.” The title track, “Two Vines,” explores feelings of uncertainty about the future. Seen especially in the lines, “We got the best years ahead / We know we do / We reach for love / It meets us on the headway / Blind to the upcoming eye.” The songs have a psychedelic sensibility as well as a solid pop foundation, making them accessible to previous fans as well as people just discovering them. In particular, “High And Low” has a mainstream pop vibe that manages to mingle well with the psychedelic sounds in the other songs without making the album sound disjointed. The band’s electronic roots are not lost in this album by any means. Songs like “Friends” feature flowing synth-laced beats that have a unique ebb and flow, making their songs interesting to listen to. However, not all of the songs are continually upbeat, with tracks like “To Her Door” that start slow with a subdued vibe that transitions to an ‘80s-style ballad about trying to win

back a lost love. On one of the softer songs on the album, the listener can pine along with Littlemore and Steele. “I feel better when we are together / I know it's simple but I don't care / I tried to say the things to make up for the mess I've caused,” they sing. Melvoin’s presence can definitely be heard in songs like “Ride” and “Digital Life” that have a certain flair to them that can be found in many Prince songs. Littlemore and Steele however, still maintain their unique sound even with such big names contributing to the album. The track “First Crush” seems misplaced in this album. The sugarysweet track is almost too sentimental for the band. Even with their previously romantic lyrics, it seems a little

too cliché. The lyrics, “She said, you're more than a friend that took me on / She, she smiles at me / First crush, too much at once, the special one,” seem uncharacteristic for Littlemore and Steele, who typically are more abstract when tackling something so sentimental. “Welcome to my Life” is one of the most upbeat and most accessible songs on the album. It shares a common theme with many of the other

songs on the album, that theme being the emotional response to the uncertainty of new love. The whole album actually seems like a psychedelic love letter to nostalgia. It’s lush electronic melodies and existential lyrics contribute to a very cohesive sound that will keep the listener interested while staying in the familiar musical territory that Empire of the Sun is known for. The band starts touring for "Two Vines" in early December 2016.

Mad Love for 'Mad Love'

Briel Felton Contributing Writer A decade after the release of JoJo’s last full-length album, “The High Road,” fans have been waiting for the “Too Little, Too Late” singer to release another album. After record company debacles, she took a break from music but she did not completely leave the game. Over the last few

years, she has released EPs such as “LoveJo” in 2014, “LoveJo2” in 2015 and “III” in 2015. Finally, after a decade, JoJo has returned full force with her third, full-length album “Mad Love," released on Oct. 14 through Atlantic Records. Legal troubles with her label stopped her commercial success and kept her quiet for 10 years. She remedied these legal woes with the release

of the first single from “Mad Love,” the defiant "F--- Apologies," feat. Wiz Khalifa. JoJo sings, "What you want from me / I would say I'm sorry if I really meant it / F--- apologies, I would say I'm sorry if I really meant it.” Last year she released three songs, which she called a “tringle,” and was able to go on tour. Called the “I Am JoJo Tour,” she was able to reintroduce herself to her fans underneath her new label, Atlantic Records. While on tour, JoJo went through some hard times, including a nasty breakup and the death of her father. She said these events changed her life and pushed her to go back into the studio to make sure that her DNA was interwoven in this album. JoJo said that the album is not just about boys, but is an “empowered and honest” album where strength and vulnerability finds its way in. The lead track, “Music,” pulls from her heart to talk about how music was like a third parent to her, how it

raised her and informed her. It also talks about her life with her parents and her roots. The album covers an array of factors in a young woman’s life. Though she says the theme of “Mad Love” is still love, it is love in all different shapes. The 15-track album shows the world that JoJo is not that same 13-year-old teenager singing about crushes and heartbreak. She is now a 25-year-old woman who has experienced a lot in her life. Both lyrically and vocally, JoJo has grown up. Her lyrics explore mature themes showing her growth as an artist and as a woman. Vocally, her high soprano, slightly raspy voice has deepened into a sweet and raspy alto, with higher and lower ranges. She goes from strong, solid ballads, like, “I Am,” that test her vocal range to fun, dance songs with popular EDM beats, like “Clovers.” Other songs on the album include “FAB”, which is a three-letter acro-

nym that stands for ‘fake ass b----.” The track features female rapper Remy Ma, speaking on the topic of real friendship and fake friendship. “High Heels” is the ultimate song of female empowerment, which discusses moving on from someone undeserving. The title, and each song, have a period at the end to show the definite, sincere approach. These are real truths being told. Period. The album sounded as if it were needed, like it was her only time to do this, her one chance to get it all out there, and she did it gracefully. After 10 long years, JoJo did not disappoint. She said she wanted to put all of her into this record, and each verse drips with all her experience, heartbreak, and realizations. This was a healing album. “Mad Love” is as sincere, honest and mature as she is. It does not disappoint.

Good Beer, Big Heart at Wasserhund Brewing Company Jacie Litz Contributing Writer Creating a good beer is key to any brewery. Perhaps most important is the environment. Luckily, both can be found at Wasserhund Brewing Company. The German-style beer and food reflect quality ingredients and dedication. The brick oven pizzas are unique and tasty, and the smaller draft menu of 12 beers provides a range of flavors. Located on Laskin Road in Virginia Beach, the laid-back vibe and family friendly atmosphere encompass a great environment. According to their website, Wasserhund, meaning “water dog” in German, comes from a love of the beach, dogs and German beer. This is present in the decor as well as the beer. The light blue walls along with wooden seating echo the beach. Pictures of the namesake water-loving German shepherd, Hertz, adorn the walls. The long wooden benches and bar

encourage communal seating. Two tan surfboards hang down the center of the room for lighting. A list of German words and phrases hangs about the bar for anyone who wants to practice. To the right of the bar, the brewing room is in full view of the public. The front is a wall of windows providing natural light and an open-air feel. The on-tap menu not only names the beer but also gives a brief description of each beer’s flavors. A popular German wheat beer, the Shepheweizen, indeed produces “malt sweetness with a little hop bitterness.” Another popular brew is the Haywire Husky. Termed as a coffee beer, the light amber color is a surprise. However, the coffee flavor is still fully there, along with a hoppy, crisp finish. Another wonder comes from the Pumpkin Pale Ale. The smoothness with little hops provides a refreshing beer. The Noble Three Way is a collaboration with Pleasure House Brewing

Company and Home Republic to create a Hefeweizen beer with German Noble hops. This creation is light in color but strong in flavor. Always on tap is the King Neptune Kölsch, inspired by a German ale, that provides a hint of citrus and light hops flavor. The options for the beer come in a 32 and 64 oz. draft. Customers may request a sample before making a decision. Flights are also an option. The flight of eight appropriately comes on a dog-shaped board. Each week a new beer is rotated onto the draft menu. The food menu provides a revelation: mustard on pizza. Not the bright yellow condiment found on hot dogs, but a large grain beer mustard swirls around the signature Wasserhund pizza. Bratwurst, red onions and sauerkraut round out the pizza-meetsGerman-sausage concoction. This invention is a serious must try. For something spicy, try the rightly named Hellhound. The sriracha sausage, red onions, banana peppers, ja-

lapenos and hot sauce add a fiery kick. The Burly Bulldog with pepperoni, Italian sausage, bacon and black forest ham is a meat lovers dream. They also make a jumbo 10-inch pretzel with your choice of beer mustard or cheese for a dip. Wasserhund does not just make beer and pizza; they also give back to the community. Each month the brewery chooses a charity, which receives 5 percent of that month’s revenue. October’s charity was the David Hilton Memorial Scholarship for the Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine. The scholarship also helps raise awareness for suicide prevention. In November, the brewery will be supporting Dogs on Deployment. The Beer, Dogs and Veterans fundraising event will be Nov. 5 at the brewery. To date, Wasserhund has raised $43,965 for charities since opening. Wasserhund is open Sunday through Wednesday from noon un-

'Doctor Strange': A Magical and Familiar Trip Ross Reelachart Technology Editor Marvel Studios continues to reign supreme in the world of superhero cinema with its newest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “Doctor Strange.” Boasting trippy visuals and a dedication to both its weird magical origins, as well as the proven Marvel formula, “Doctor Strange” demonstrates that Marvel can be both wildly different and oddly familiar at the same time. Benedict Cumberbatch is Dr. Stephen Strange, a brilliant and arrogant neurosurgeon. After a car crash leaves his hands with irreparable nerve damage, he seeks out any way to give him back his steady hands. His search brings him into contact with a mysti-

cal order lead by a mysterious immortal called the Ancient One, played by Tilda Swinton. Strange’s perceptions are shattered as he brought into the world of magic, mysticism and extradimensional forces. Ever since “Captain America: Civil War,” Marvel Studios seems to have committed to the idea that they need to shake-up their now very familiar superhero formula. “Doctor Strange” is the first film to attempt this new direction, and it succeeds in some areas while playing it safe in others. The story of an arrogant and selfcentered man learning to care about others and use his powers for good is the story of the very first “Iron Man” movie, right down to the goatee. While the plot is familiar, the movie is bol-

stered by likable characters and jokes that all tend to be on the right side of corny. As much as the movie tries to change things up, such as a lack of any real “love interest” for Strange to save or a rather clever twist on a “heroic sacrifice” ending, it still feels like a bythe-books Marvel movie. Like every Marvel movie, it manages to make up for its shortcomings with good writing, good acting and true-to-comic depictions of its titular character. This is a movie that revels in its mixture of modern sensibilities with the complete weirdness that literal magic can conjure. Much like how the first “Captain America” steeped itself in its WWII period and the “Thor” movies played its high-fantasy aesthetic completely straight, “Doctor Strange” uses

its "Eastern Mysticism" themes to grant its world a magical feeling without it also being the somewhat racist stereotype that the original comic based its themes on. “Magical” is probably the best way to describe the movie’s major set piece moments, both in terms of visuals and commitment to the lawless nature of magic. In “Doctor Strange,” characters use magical spells and rituals to teleport anywhere instantly, fly through the air using magic sigils, wield ancient relics of deific power and bend the laws of physics as they travel to and from different parallel dimensions. All of its lets legendary visual effects studio Industrial Light & Magic stretch its visual muscles and melt its rendering computers.

The Mace & Crown

@maceandcrown

@maceandcrown

Every magical effect is shown without a hint of irony, and the ways that magic can change the world is a feast for the eyes. One chase scene is themed around “space,” and is basically an urban chase scene if it took place inside of an M.C. Escher drawing. Another themed around “time,” demonstrates the non-linear nature of time in a magical world. This is one of the rare movies that definitely warrants a 3D viewing, if not an IMAX 3D viewing. “Doctor Strange” promises and delivers a world not bound by the rules of realism or physics. While it may not deliver as much in the storytelling department, it’s a colorful and weird ride that is supported by good performances and great character moments.

FOX’s 'Son of Zorn': Mixing Live-Action and Animation, The Zephyrian Way George Plank Staff Writer At first glance, it's understandable how Fox’s new quasi-animated show, “Son of Zorn,” could be immediately compared to “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” and “Who Framed Roger Rabbit.” This new show uses a combination of live-action and animation to deliver a comedy that refuses to be subdued. So, what exactly is “Son of Zorn?” Is it a cartoon, or is it a live-action and family-based comedy? Zorn, a massive barbarian character, is the defender of the land of Zephyria — an animated island where, in the “He-Man” tradition, hulking muscle-bound characters fight the forces of evil daily. Zorn is called away from his life of fighting to visit his teenaged son for his birthday. When his son seems distant and actively shows no interest in his Zephyrian heritage, Zorn decides he should be in his son’s life. The series and its protagonist is a send-up to the animation of the '80s, particularly “He-Man.” The main source of the show’s humor is a “fish out of water” type plot, shown by Zorn attempting to assimilate to

the technologically advanced, nonanimated world. The use of an animated character allows the show to get away with many visual gags that a strictly live-action show could not. During the first episode, Zorn attempts to give his son a new ride in an attempt to bond with him. The new ride, however, was in the form of a giant battle falcon. The show intermingles animated Zephyrian objects and a live-action environment in a natural way. The mixing of styles doesn’t, at any point, feel distracting from the narrative at all. However, the show isn’t just all laughs. “Son of Zorn” devotes just as much time to heartfelt morals about the importance of family and togetherness as it does to the hijinks of Zorn. Its message of maintaining one’s identity while trying to assimilate into another culture often feels like something that was taken directly from the script book of ABC’s “Blackish.” In many ways, the show feels like a sitcom from the late '80s and early '90s, sans the laugh track. The parallels to “He-Man” don’t end on a purely superficial level. “He-Man” used a technique called rotoscope. Using this technique, someone would be filmed and then

the film would be drawn over to create fluid and lifelike animation. In a similar vein, “Son of Zorn” uses a stand-in during all the live-action sequences so that the animators have a frame of reference for their work. This effect sometimes causes the animation to be less fluid than traditional animation, but it’s still cleaner than the quasi-animated segments on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” So, what is in the future for Fox’s new hybrid series? It has the potential to go on for several more seasons, assuming it picks up enough of a following. It’s charming, heartfelt and has the right amount of humor injected into every episode to keep the viewers engaged. It may not have the immediate appeal of “The Simpsons” or “Bob’s Burgers,” but the humor is witty and always fitting to the situation. The show's use of campy humor with heartfelt morals is sure to create a following from both nostalgics and newcomers alike. For “He-Man” fans, if only to see what references they make in future episodes, it’s definitely worth the weekly watch. Don’t be surprised if, by the season finale, they introduce an eccentric skeleton character.

MONARCH STYLE

Helpful Habits for Fashionistas Kim Bering Staff Writer Every fashion lover has a habitual routine that impacts their style on a daily basis. Looking put together doesn’t just happen naturally. It takes thought and effort. There are some tips that can help us begin to cultivate useful habits. First of all, make sure you allow yourself an ample amount of time to get ready in the morning. #IWokeUpLikeThis should not be a daily excuse for leaving the house in sweats. Waking up early enough to style your hair and clothing is a necessity. Maybe plan for enough time to grab a cup of coffee on your way to class too. Being fashionably late is not appropriate for every day. The next helpful tip is to plan your outfit the night before so you can walk out the door at a reasonable time. Australian Victoria’s Secret model Miranda Kerr takes her morning routines seriously. She preps important outfits the night prior to meetings or special events. “I plan my outfit the evening before, so I know in the morning what I’m wearing and what I feel confident in,” Kerr told Vogue magazine. Checking your favorite social media apps the night before is a useful way to get outfit inspiration. Pinterest, Instagram and fashion blogs are filled with creative ensembles to replicate in your own way. It is also a method of staying in tune with different trends. Next, dress smart. Plan to wear an outfit that is comfortable for the day ahead of you. Dressing comfortably, yet stylishly is easy to achieve as a student during the fall. Wearing practically anything is permissible, but you can never go wrong with a pair of favorite jeans, a comfy, cable-knit sweater and flats. Donna Karan, creator and

@maceandcrown

designer of the fashion DKNY brand, highly agrees with versatile fashion. She also acknowledges the daily challenge of choosing an outfit. “Design is a constant challenge to balance comfort with luxe, the practical with the desirable,” Karan said. Another way to dress smart is to prepare for the weather. It sounds so simple, but it takes less than 10 seconds to check the weather app. It can make the difference if you need to bring a raincoat or a warm sweater with you. Staying warm and dry makes life easier, so check the daily forecast. A statement jacket makes an outfit in the fall. Especially when wearing a bomber jacket. This is a stylish way to keep warm against the breezy chill on Hampton Boulevard. H&M, Francesca’s and Forever21 have a wide variety starting at $25.00. All of these stores are conveniently located at MacArthur Center. And for the days when you are simply not having it, putting on a graphic T-shirt that explains your struggle is perfect for that occasion. Prints that read, “Caffeine Made Me Do It” and “Nope Not Today,” are everywhere in Francesca’s for under $25. They are a fun and comfy way to be casual. Lastly, it is essential to plan enough time to get a cup of coffee. Every New York girl or blogger knows how to use coffee as an accessory. Not only will the caffeine give you a morning jolt, but carrying a Starbucks cup with subtle lipstick marks looks very chic. It is also highly convenient for snapping a quick Instagram picture on the way to class. Do yourself the favor by planning ahead and waking up on time. Everyone has those offdays when all you can muster is a hoodie, but preparing your outfit in advance will help you maintain your student style.

Warpaint ‘Heads Up’

Courtesy pitchfork.com

The actual embodiment of Los Angeles grunge-rock, “Heads Up” shows how Warpaint have finely tuned their alternative sound. Two years after the release of their self-titled album, Warpaint is back and more moody than ever. Notorious for walking the fine line between boring and being bored, the all-girl band keeps up their indie-grunge roots. Released on Sept. 23, “Heads Up” incorporates R&B and pop elements into their rock sound. Tracks like “By Your Side” keep the cool lyrics that Warpaint is known for, but it also has an easy going, synth-pop backing.

“Heads Up” is a lot of whining and trepidation, and the band wastes no time jumping right into it. The lead track, “Whiteout,” features the girls crooning on about built up walls and distrust. Lyrics like, “You lock it up so easily / I wanna believe all that you say to me,” establish the angst right off the bat. Other songs like “New Song” and “So Good” keep the new, upbeat sound Warpaint has created. Each song continues with the same allure as the album goes on. “Heads Up” is definitely a more pop version of their older works. It still has the

angsty theme that is well-loved, but now they’ve added a solid sounding R&B base. The album is a bit disjointed, almost as if the band had to prove just how alternative they really are. It’s got some good qualities, but overall is just a lot of noise. Unlike their self-titled album, the goal for “Heads Up” seems to have been to put together an album that captured the essence of their live shows. It’s definitely taken a turn from their usual down-tempo rock feel, but it still remains repetitive and broody.

Meek Mill ‘DC4’

Almost a year after putting out his last full-length album, the world waited in anticipation to see what Meek Mill had to say next. As it turns out, it’s not a lot. Meek Mill has had a hard time keeping his mouth shut. After starting a variety of beefs with other artists, people who thrive on petty conflict eagerly awaited to see who he was going to piss off next. “DC4” is, unfortunately, a bit underwhelming. While Meek Mill can always pick the best beats as a solid backbone to his music, the lyrics are repetitive and bleak. The album is all

about Meek Mill trying to prove how cool he really is. But as he said, he’s just “stickin’ to the basics.” The album features many wellrespected artists, ranging from Tory Lanez to Nicki Minaj. Just because high profile artists are featured on an album, doesn’t make the album any better. Unfortunately, for Meek Mill, this was most definitely the case. “Blessed Up,” the second track off of “DC4,” is one of the most low-key. The lines, “I got God watchin' over me from courtside / Ballin’ like I'm Jordan cause I'm blessed up,” are grateful, and show how Meek Mill

really appreciates the opportunities he’s been presented. Meek Mill doesn’t really rap, but rather yells most of his lyrics. Even in more downbeat songs, his voice rings loud. He said, “It’s no roof so they can see me shine,” in “Shine,” a song that confronts the struggle he’s had becoming successful. “DC4” continues the theme of identity and the struggles of making a name for yourself. Sadly, it’s just boring. Meek Mill tried to make it a big deal, but it fell short.

The Mace & Crown

Avenged Sevenfold surprised everyone by releasing their new album two months early. “The Stage” incorporates everything a great metal album should, while still keeping the same Avenged Sevenfold sound that fans love. The album, released Oct. 28, is more ambitious than their last, and even features a cameo by Neil deGrasse Tyson. After the switch from Warner Bros. to Capitol Records, the band has proven that they’re not holding anything back. “The Stage” opens up with an eightminute long epic. The lead track, also the title track, was the first and only

single to be released off of the new album. Cynical lines like, “Jesus Christ was born to die / Leave it to man to levitate his own to idolize,” waste no time grabbing the listener’s attention. Unlike the downbeat rock sound the opening track has, the second track, “Paradigm,” resonates with a more classic metal sound. Lead singer, Matthew Sanders, better known by his stage name M. Shadows, screams “I'm way up, a God in size / Beyond the reach of mortals I shed my human side / Father, O' Father,” brings almost a sacrilegious theme to the album. Other tracks like “God Damn” and

@maceandcrown

@maceandcrown

“Simulation” stay true to the metal sound. Each member plays their part perfectly. Closing track “Exist” is the longest song on the album at a total of 15 minutes. Neil deGrasse Tyson talks about the universe as the music continues to rock in the background. While tackling the challenge of a conceptual album, Avenged Sevenfold also dealt with label changes and the departure (and addition) of a new band member. None of this stopped them from writing and recording a great album. “The Stage” will impress any metal fan, and maybe even some who aren’t.

‘Undecided: The Movie’ 2016 | Unrated | 86 min.

With the election recently behind us, perhaps it’s time to reflect on this wildly confusing and divided presidential campaign. Serving as a time capsule, “Undecided: The Movie” spoofs the 2016 presidential race while also acting as a hilarious hidden camera prank show. Shot in a mock-documentary style, the film follows John and Dan (Jason Selvig and Davram Stiefler), two slightly dimwitted individuals who become subjects of a reality show. In their show, John and Dan travel the country meeting potential presidential candidates like Ted Cruz and Bernie Sanders to decide who they’d back

as the future president of the U.S. Taking the approach that movies like “Borat” took, many of the pranks and stunts that Selvig and Stiefler pull in character are the foundation of “Undecided.” Not only does the movie capture the actual reactions of people around the actors, but even the reactions of the unknowing candidates that the actors interact with as their characters. Many of these pranks were even reported multiple times on national news, as evident in the movie. The unique concept of the movie contains great and hilarious moments, most notably one where the

characters walk around a Clinton rally wearing “Settle for Hillary” shirts. However, for any joke that works in the movie, there are many long winded jokes that don’t work. The film also does run into structural problems around the second half that contain a forced and dated reality TV satire and a rushed ending. Still, even with its frustratingly unsatisfying ending, “Undecided” manages to boast enough laughs to make this a passable viewing experience. This film is available on Netflix. Courtesy IMDB

‘I Smile Back’ 2015 | R | 85 min.

Anyone who is familiar with the standup comedy of Sarah Silverman knows that she is anything but serious. Much of her act involves being very crude and vulgar to the point of being animated, which not everyone is a fan of. So it comes to many people’s surprise that the notoriously foul mouthed comedian made a sudden turn into serious drama. In the film, “I Smile Back,” Silverman plays Laney, an upper middleclass mother whose addiction to drugs and alcohol impairs her decision making. After a stint in rehab, Laney has to take careful steps on her

road to sobriety for her husband and two kids. While she has the motivation to deal with her issues, Laney soon discovers that every bump in the road will test her in very uncomfortable ways. Based on the novel by Amy Koppelman, “I Smile Back” gives audiences a character that could have easily been dismissed by audiences for her constant horrible decision making. However, Silverman’s surprisingly heartbreaking performance is able to give the character enough depth to be sympathetic to the audience. If there is any reason to watch “I Smile

Back,” it’s for Silverman’s knockout depiction of a pained addict. That being said, the movie is certainly not without its flaws that hold the film itself from being great. The plot is very reminiscent of other movies about addiction and really gives viewers nothing new as far as a story. The ending is daring and dark enough to work, but the viewer has to trudge through a basically nothing-new story to get there. This film is available on Amazon Prime.

‘Len and Company’ 2015 | Unrated | 102 min.

Weighed down by years of work and hard partying, Len (Rhys Ifan), an aged musician and producer, decides to seclude himself in his country home. After not hearing from Len for weeks, his son Max (Jack Kilmer) takes it upon himself to drive up and check in on him, much to Len’s dismay. More problems only arise for Len when his protégée turned popstar, Zoe (Juno Temple) comes busting down his door. As the prickly Len does all he can to avoid his house guests, Max and Zoe each share the real reasons for their visit. Max, who carries a demo tape

from his band, is trying to find the courage to ask for his dad’s opinion (which can sometimes be very icy). Meanwhile, Zoe wants to confront Len on his sudden abandonment of her and why he appears to be ashamed of her fame. While the subject of sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll cinematically makes for an interesting film, “Len and Company” avoid these things for the most part to tell a more personal story. Disappointment and family dysfunction seem to be at the heart of “Len and Company,” which is purely driven by Ifan and Temple’s performances.

These qualities alone would make for an interesting character study, but the disjointed and distracted narrative hold this movie back from getting to the heart of their themes. There are potential moments in the movie that have the ability to peak the curiosity of its audience. Those moments, however, are fleeting as the film spends the rest of its runtime jumping to and from plot points that range from boring to pointless.

Monarchs Handle the Herd to Become Bowl Eligible

Roberto Castro Contributing Writer

The Old Dominion Monarchs (6-3, C-USA 4-1) got some much-needed revenge on Marshall (2-7, C-USA 1-4) thumping them 38-14 under the bright

lights at Foreman Field. With the win, the Monarchs became bowl eligible for the first time in school history. ODU jumped out of the gates quickly with a nine-yard touchdown pass from quarterback

SPORTS RECAP Three Lady Monarch Soccer Players Named All-Conference USA Senior midfielder Kathryn Hill and redshirt junior defender Jackie Stroud were selected to the second team while sophomore forward Iris Achterhof was named to the third team. Hill tied for second on the team in assists (2) and tied for second in goals with Stroud (2). Achterhof had three game-winning goals this season and a team-leading 11 points this season. Marshall responded quickly with a 93-yard touchdown drive ending in a 5-yard pass from quarterback Chase Litton to receiver Ryan Yurachek. It was all Monarchs from that point forward as Old Dominion scored 24 unanswered points. Quarterback David Washington threw for two more scores, connecting with receivers Zach Pascal and Travis Fulgham. This was Fulgham’s fifth consecutive game with a touchdown catch. Running back Ray Lawry had another monster game with 27 carries for 209 yards rushing and a score marking Lawry’s fourth career 200-yard rushing game in his career.

“It feels good to have made history, to be the first team to go to a bowl game. And it feels great to finally beat Marshall. They embarrassed us two years ago in front of our home crowd. We were determined that we weren’t going to let them do that again,” Lawry said. The Monarchs’ offense finished with 461 total yards with 199 yards passing, and 262 yards rushing. ODU’s defense also came to play, led by defensive end Oshane Ximines three tackles and two sacks. Cornerback Brandon Addison held his own with a school single-game record five pass break-ups to go along with three tackles, and two of them for losses. ODU's stout defense held Marshall to just 214 total yards with only 138 yards passing, and 76 yards rushing. In what has been a rocky season for the Thundering Herd,

Simms Scores 37 Points in Exhibition Win Courtesy ODU Sports Harry Howard Jr. Sports Editor

Jennie Simms led all scorers with 37 points as the Lady Monarchs cruised to an 82-65 win over Davis & Elkins at the Ted Constant Center. Simms was 13 of 24 from the field, including three for seven from three-point land. “I was just taking what they gave me,” Simms said. The Lady Monarchs came hot, taking 26-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. They shot

52.9 percent from the field and forced the Senators to commit 10 turnovers. The second quarter was a different story, Davis & Elkins finally settled into the game and took a 37-33 lead going into halftime. Stephanie Wooten led Davis & Elkins with 26 points and 12 assists. In the second half, the Lady Monarchs got back into their groove and outscored the Senators 49-28 to close the game. They begin to pound the glass outrebounding Davis & Elkins

Redshirt junior Odegua Oigbokie showed that she is healthy and ready to contribute after missing all of last season with an injury. Oigbokie finished the game a rebound short of double with 11 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Jessica Munoz

The Monarchs took the court for the first time this season in an exhibition against in-state foe Virginia State at the Ted Constant Center. Thirteen different Monarchs played and 11 of them scored. Redshirt sophomore Zoran Talley led them all in scoring with 16 points on 7-10 shooting. “It’s a good first outing, I was pleasantly surprised with our

defense. Virginia State does a great job of spreading you out and attacking you and I thought we really concentrated on moving our feet,” head coach Jeff Jones said. ODU caught fire later in the first half, going on a 12-1 run to close out the half. The run was fueled by foul trouble the Trojans put themselves in. The Monarchs were in the double bonus with over eight and a half minutes left in the first half,

leading to a lopsided amount of free throws in their favor. Once the second half began, the Monarchs ran away going on a 39-9 run putting the game out of reach for the Trojans. Virginia State tried to put together a run at the end of the game but it was too little too late as they fell 71-32. Melvin Gregory and Walter Williams were the Trojans leading scorers with six points each. “Coach told us not to let up.

The Trojans had their chances at the free throw line but were unable to convert, making just 10 of 22 free throws.

The Strome Center Presents Inaugural Lion's Lair Innovation Competition Ross Reelachart Technology Editor

The best and most inventive students, alumni and employees presented their ideas and businesses to a panel of judges at the inaugural Lion’s Lair Innovation Competition on Friday. In a style similar to the TV show “Shark Tank,” presenters tried to sell their ideas or products in a way that an actual business would, with plans and financials, and were then questioned by the four-judge panel. Winners would walk away with a check for $3000. The Lion’s Lair Innovation Competition was sponsored by the Strome Entrepreneurial Center and Executive Chairman of ADS, Inc. Luke Hillier, who also served on the panel of judges. Both the competition and

the Strome Center seek to encourage, grow and provide valuable resources to young entrepreneurs at ODU. The competition itself was between nine finalists, pared down from a selection of 50 entrants, in two broad categories: Traditional entrepreneurship, which dealt with products and businesses, and social entrepreneurship, which dealt mostly with mobile applications or ways to improve the community. There competition began with master of ceremonies Ted Alexander introducing the judges and telling the presenters to “Show your passion.” But with cash prizes on the line and a panel of industry experts to present to, most of the competitors were feeling the nerves. Matthew Yancer, who was presenting his senior design project by himself, was feeling nervous

Aaron Washington, a member of the Student Veteran House group, tried to control the anxiety with practice. “I’m feeling better than I felt this morning,” Washington said. Janay Brown of Full Belly Delights attributed her confidence to elsewhere. “[I’m feeling] a little nervous, but confident thanks to friends and family,” Brown said. Every presenter was given a strict five minute time limit to speak, where they were judged according to six criteria: Market opportunity, distinct competence, management capability, financial understanding, investment potential and overall pre-

sentation. Basically, every presenter was expected to show that they had a viable product or service, that they understood the risks and challenges of running a business and that they knew what they were doing in the future. It was a time to demonstrate that they were professionals and that they were ready for the real world, or ready to take on more as was the case with a few presenters that already had some business beneath their belts. The judges used their three-minute Q&A time to hammer the presenters with questions, such as “Who is your customer for your business?” or “How do you plan to build credibility?” or “Why would someone else not do this?” These were tough questions meant to see if the presenters had knowledge beyond their presentation, and most were able to readily

and quickly answer the questions. All of the presenters did well, but only three could win a check for $3000 and one additional presenter would win a check for being Best in Show. The amount of time it took for the judges to reach a consensus demonstrated the strength of all the presenters. In the end, Yancer, Brown and the team for Student Veteran House won the checks with another presenter winning Best in Show. Brown was “feeling inspired” for winning, as was Student Veteran House. “[We are] ecstatic. When we came in, we thought we did well, but not this well,” Washington said. “[I] feel great. I just hope I’m not late for my best friend’s wedding,” Yancer said.

a person or a machine. The sample is then broken down in a manner that shows how many people of which race, political party and gender responded. There is no intent to favor one party over another. That is the concern of many conservatives, who see more Democrats than Republicans responding to the polls. When pollsters speak to the respondents, they first ask, “With what political party do you associate or identify?” VoteCastr is a new company formed in partnership with Slate Magazine this year, according to The Marquette. It was designed to release real-time projections throughout the day in seven of this year’s key swing states: Colorado, Nevada, Florida, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylva-

nia and Wisconsin. However, a system like VoteCastr has the potential to harm the election. Because the system was designed to put out the information in real time, those who went to vote on Election Day would have been able to see who was winning at any given moment. With key states being found across the U.S. and the polls not opening at the same time across the country, not everyone will be voting at the same time. There are key states across the U.S. If a potential voter saw that their candidate wasn’t winning when they were about to go vote, they would be less likely to go vote because they might have felt their vote wouldn’t matter. The data is used by campaigns to keep track of where they are in the

polls. If they’re behind, they can pull people from areas they’re doing well in and send them to areas they’re not doing so well in to get voters out to the polls. News organizations also gather this data, but they don’t use it to interfere with the election. The New York Times has provided some tips to those looking to read the polls. Looking at the top line results, or how many points the candidate has gained or lost since the last poll, is a good start. It is also recommended to look at the total percentage points each candidate has. There may be many undecided voters if the candidate is far from the 50 percent mark. On the other hand, if the candidate is closer to 50 percent, the issue is that it’s difficult to determine how the candidate has that lead, whether

it’s because of party unity or they’ve won the voters they need for victory. It is also a good idea to look at how the poll was conducted, who was surveyed and who conducted the poll. Those who look at the polls should be wary of the results they provide. For the most part, poll results from Nov. 2 for the presidential race show similar results, but there are some outliers, according to RealClearPolitics. Two polls from Emerson College and Remington Research in Missouri show Trump gaining 15 and 13 points, respectively. From Nov. 1, the KABC/SurveyUSA poll out of California had Clinton up 21 points.

modern digitally-integrated society because of how much efficiency and accuracy it can bring to a world filled with connected electronic devices. Instead of humans rigorously programming every interaction into every device, they program these devices to monitor themselves and their environment, then they autonomously flow the data to other devices. The IoT doesn’t have a network unto itself or need one, but it can use already existing networks to function. A pet with an RFID chip, a person with a wireless heart monitor and a Wi-Fi-enabled refrigerator are all considered parts of the IoT. When devices and machines talk to each other without the need of direct human control, both good and bad things can happen. For the most part, people enjoy the benefits. A sports wristband can monitor and record your vital signs for upload and review later, a smart TV can consolidate all of your streaming services and businesses can tailor their services to the

habits of their customers. But all of these devices, which can be connected to the internet in the same way your computer might, create “cracked windows” in the “wall” of digital security. The late October attack on DynDNS and a very recent attack that managed to infect 3,500 devices in just five days, according to Ars Technica, are examples of how the IoT can be used against us. Both of these attacks, and many others like them, utilized IoT botnets to conduct Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. Worryingly, the latest attack used code directly lifted from an earlier attack that conducted as part of an ethically questionable research product. In general, these attacks utilize “botnets,” which are created when a malicious program takes control of a horde of unsecured devices or computers. These bots then send erroneous messages to a target over the internet, which then overwhelms the

target by sheer data overload. The IoT plays into this problem because many of these internet-connected devices lack the proper security measures that a normal computer would have, despite having just as much access to a network. While the “things” in the IoT are often simple and don’t have much “brains,” they have enough hardware and software strength to be a bot in a botnet by just sending out signals and data requests. In some cases, an attacker can even take control of a device. Until electronics manufacturers build in better security measures to their devices, their products will continue to offer a possible vector for attackers to access secure networks, conduct attacks using unsecured devices or even control the same unsecured devices. So until such measures are in place, try and ensure all your Wi-Fi-enabled appliances are secured and think twice about that new Bluetooth spatula.

Donald Trump Admits Whole Campaign Was Bet George Plank Staff Writer After Nov. 8th’s Election Day results, some new information has come to light regarding the man known as Donald J. Trump. During his speech, late Tuesday night, Donald Trump confirmed that his entire campaign had been a bet. “Look, it was just a bit of harmless

fun. Warren Baby was over and we had one too many, so we started playing truth or dare. It started off simple enough. Prank call Gary Busey, sell low buy high, usual prank stuff, no one was being harmed. Then, out of nowhere, he brings up the time I ran for president in 2000 under the Reform Party, and I tell him, I say, I could’ve won, if I ran with a major party. Then he says, ‘Wanna Bet?’ and

Hillary Clinton Exhales After Full Year George Plank Staff Writer

History was made, Tuesday night, when reporters officially announced that Hillary Clinton would become the 45th president of the U.S. This was a historic moment for America and for women around the world. This has provided opportunities for people across the nation, but most of all it has given Hillary Clinton the opportunity to finally exhale. According to the President-elect, she had not been able to exhale properly during a majority of the presidential campaign. The election had been neck and neck ever since both candidates were declared nominees by their respective parties. This stress caused Secretary Clinton to tighten up, and her body refused to let her exhale until the election was over. Sources close to the Clinton camp say doctors were called in to examine the Secretary of State, but all left without any guess as to the medical cause of her affliction. Evidence of her affliction was seen during the weeks leading up to the debates. To

relieve some of the pressure on her lungs, Secretary Clinton had taken to coughing to alleviate the strain of not breathing out for such a long time. According to reports, many Clinton supporters had also been afflicted by a similar condition during the election, but once the election period was over, a majority of the country breathed a collective sigh of relief with the results. Donald Trump, who suffered a similar affliction, can now finally inhale, after doing nothing but putting out hot air for a yearand-a-half. Only time will tell how the future will look under the Clinton Administration. Hillary has her back to the past, and is ready to move forward with another historic moment in U.S. history. As for Bill Clinton, he’s just excited to get a copy of “Hustler” he hid in the Oval Office in 1996.or not the losing party has made good on their bet. I say ‘Usual stakes?’ and I gotta say, that is the hardest that I ever worked for one dollar." Analysts have confirmed that “Warren Baby” refers to investor and philanthropist, Warren Buffett, who as of now has been unavailable for comment. Trump supporter, Stu Born, says he has nothing but solidarity for Mr. Trump’s actions. “I would have done

the same thing. Do you have any idea what we can get at the dollar store now? They have Hot Pockets now. Wherever D.J. Trump is, I’m sure he’s eating good tonight.” Many of Trump’s supporters seem to agree with Mr. Born’s notion, citing this as another example of Trump’s, ‘good business skills’ and “shrewd decision making ability.” As for the location of the dollar,

neither person’s bank account has a discrepancy of a single dollar. Many are still unsure as to whether or not the losing party has made good on their bet. Donald Trump summed up the evening, and put all naysayers to rest with his closing statement. “If you think a dollar is bad, you don’t want to know what I’d do for a Klondike Bar.”

Mike Pence Realizes He Must Pretend to Like Donald Trump for Four Years With the surprising turn in the election, the world must come to terms with the reality that is, a Donald Trump presidency. The president elect had not won without making his share of opponents during his campaign, but in the end, it was the undying support from his most loyal followers that eventually won him the White House. As he said in his victory address, “Voters. I have the best voters. My voters are so many that I was elected president.” Though there were parties being thrown in the president elect’s name across the U.S. and Russia, one person was not celebrating: Vice Presidentelect, Mike Pence.

Pence stated in an interview with “Vanity Affaire,” “I only pretend to like the man (Donald Trump). I’m just glad that there’s no way that we could ever win. Could you imagine having to be seen with him for four years? I feel sorry for Melania. I don’t know how she does it.” The issue is slated to hit shelves next month, but the segment is already creating a buzz across the internet. Many Trump supporters see Pence’s comments as disrespectful to president-elect Trump, but many others see it as a sign of the rational thinking, and reasonable platitudes, that endeared Pence to Trump in the first place. There is no word whether Trump has seen the article yet, but rumors have been circulating that he may

The Rental House(Part 1) by Trisha Reese

The stick and slap of bare feet on checkered linoleum echoes throughout the empty kitchen as Short-Haired Danni walks in. She grabs a large, pink plastic cup from the pine cupboard above the sink and begins to fill it with water when a voice from the hallway makes her jump. “Why do you keep insisting on drinking tap water, Danni?” her mother asks as she enters the kitchen, all bedhead and fluffy bathrobe. “I just bought a whole case of bottled water for you. Speaking of, didn’t I ask you to unpack the groceries last night?” She strides to the distressed pine table by the windows, where brown paper bags full of goods from the previous day sit untouched from the previous night. “Danni!” she groans, pulling out a gallon of spoiled milk and a bunch of nowsoft carrots from some of the bags. “There are perishables in here!” “Sorry.” Danni shrugs leaned against the counter as she takes a sip of water. “I forgot.” Her mother sighs. “Danni, I know you’re not happy about the move, but—” “But what?” Danni interjects. “But staying in a rental house could be fun? But moving away from all my friends might not be so bad? But maybe not knowing exactly when we’ll get enough money to build that dream house of yours isn’t a major weight on everyone’s shoulders?” She scoffs and downs the rest of her water before tossing the cup in the sink. “I’m going outside.” She storms out of the kitchen

and down the carpeted hallway, but pauses at the front door. Her mother’s soft, sad, “Good morning,” drifts down the hall, and Danni sighs. She snatches her plaid coat off the rack and slides out the door. The fall air, cool and crisp and sharp enough to cut her ears, nose, and lips, greets her as she steps out onto the front porch. Orange and brown and red leaves litter the ground, contrasting with the chipped, faded white of the old wooden porch and hiding yellow grass under their colorful array. Danni sighs and crosses her arms, crunching a leaf under her bare foot. The Reynolds’ rental home is on the edge of a small town, just far enough away to be considered “separate” but not far enough to be completely disconnected from the community. Danni tucks her coat under her as she sits on the front porch step, chin resting on her palm. “Hey sis, what are you doing up so early?” Long-Haired Danny comes around the side of the house, his bare arms full of chopped wood and his hair pulled back into a ponytail. “What are you doing without a coat, idiot?” Danni scolds, eyeing him up and down. “Well, someone’s in a bad mood.” Danny stops at the foot of the steps. “You know, just because I was adopted second doesn’t mean I’m not older than you. Show some respect for your elders, missy.” “You’re seventeen, Daniel. Get over yourself.” “And you’re fifteen, Danielle. Learn to let things go.” Danny’s heavy boots weigh on the creaky wood as he climbs the porch steps, pausing so he can look down at

Danni. “We’ll be okay, sis. Seriously. One move isn’t the end of the world, especially if you get to stick with your family.” Danni sighs and looked away. The infamous Long-Haired Danny guilt trip has struck her again. Somehow, his history of bad adoptions manages to save him from a verbal smacking nearly every time Danni feels he needs one. “I’m sorry, Dan. I didn’t mean to be insensitive. It’s just—“ “I know. I get it.” He drops the wood off at the front door and then heads inside. Danni remains on the porch for a while longer, letting the cool air cleanse her lungs and chill her fingers to a near-numb tingle, until she notices a boy waiting by the bus stop just across the street. He’s wearing a black backpack decorated with pictures of pink, blue, and green cats, and is pretending to be reading a book. Instead, he is clearly trying (and failing) to be inconspicuous about spying on them. “Hey, Dan! He’s out here again!” Danni yells, and when the boy sees that she’s noticed him, he slams his book shut and backs away. “Hey, get back here!” Danni yells as the boy runs away from her. She takes off after him. “Hey! Cat pack! Get back here!” When she catches up to the boy she grabs his backpack and whips him around. “What do you want?” she asks, shaking him. “I-I...” “Come on, spit it out! Don’t you have better things to do than to spy on people? Why are you watching us?” “B-because it’s haunted!” “What?”

“F

amily reunions?” I asked in bewilderment as the dark grey cloud thickened and turned black. The ripples in my coffee were methodical, almost like footsteps of something much larger than a human. “Yes, you’re about to meet my twin: the bane of Imagination.” She had a frown on her face and she stood calmly before exiting the coffeehouse. The bell on the door sounded eerie this time as the black cloud billowed through the street. “Wait, you’ll need this Hero. The smoke may be toxic.” The Writer snapped her fingers and a bubble formed around my head. As the smoke curled up around us, the air in the bubble stayed clear. Against the dark void, The Writer looked small and almost childish. She was wearing slim sneakers under equally slender jeans and a black t-shirt topped it off. She rolled her shoulders, a long black coat appeared and wrapped around her frame. She held up her left hand and an orb of green light appeared levitating above her palm. We walked towards what I assumed was the middle of the fog, The Writer walked in even steps while mine were anxious. I followed the green light at times when the smog got too thick to see. After a few minutes, the smoke cleared and The Writer made an abrupt stop. I bumped into her and she smiled at me as I took in my

surroundings. The bubble around my head popped and I jumped slightly. There was a tall boy in the middle of the clearing; the asphalt protruded from the ground in a throne formation and this was where they found him. As eclectic as The Writer was, her twin matched her in atrocity. His hair was black, long and stringy from grease. The features of his face were jagged as if his skin had been drawn tight across his skull. His eyes were entirely black, and his teeth had been filed to points. He wore all black and held a scepter in his hand that was topped with a skull. “Sister,” he hissed at The Writer, “Who is this? Your new little toy in your play-land?” “Brother. Who’s skull did you sully to make that overgrown toothpick?” the girl next to me growled. Her blue eyes now burned brighter with the fire of a thousand suns. The only other physical sign of her anger was her curled fists. “One of your subjects. Do you remember that little one with the purple dragon?” He smirked at the skull in question and tapped his fingers on the arm of his throne, “You can have the dragon back. It bites.” A crater opened up in the gravel and a shell of what once was that little purple dragon slunk out of the earth. Its wings were tattered, it was covered in blood, and two columns of white smoke curled up from its nose. “Oh no! Cerberus,” The Writer dropped to her knees and lifted up the lizard. “Villain, why would you

do this?” the girl screamed at the insidious boy. “Actually, I came to kill your new hero. I heard you had a new toy, so I wanted to come rip his lovely head off like I did to all the others. The boy got in my way. He died nobly though, if that is any consolation.” There was a resigned shrug as Villain talked in a singsong voice, and his eyes gleamed when he looked my way. “I’ll kill you myself,” The Writer glared at him from the ground. “Tsk, tsk, tsk. You know the curse that Mother Dearest put on us. Since we were born together—” “We can not die by each other’s hands.” The Writer finished through gritted teeth. “Let’s be honest, Writer. If we didn’t have that curse, your silly little play-world wouldn’t have lasted a Peloponnesian minute under my wrath.” He smirked. “Hold on a second,” The vision of the boy walking with Cerberus on his shoulder swam in my brain. “You came to kill me?” I stepped towards the pretentious throne. “Yes, Hero. I do enjoy a good killing, as you can see.” Villain twirled his staff in his hand. “There’s one flaw to your plan, Villain.” The Writer smiled at me suddenly as if she knew exactly how the world would end. It was a smile that kept a cynically happy secret; I mirrored it as I swaggered across the clearing towards the young man. “Nothing has killed me so far, what makes you so special?” “Well…” Villain smirked.
