'The Nasty Truth: Domestic Violence'

Saamia Aslam Contributing Writer

On Oct. 17, the Nu Theta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. along with the M-Power Peer Education Network collaborated with the ODU Women’s Center to present "The Nasty Truth: Domestic Violence." The event began with each organization introducing themselves, and a video presentation was played displaying quotes from domestic abuse victims and survivors to set the mood for the event. Following the video presentation, the facilitators conducted an open discussion in which audience members were encouraged to answer questions on what domestic violence is, what the warning signs for it are and who it impacts. Emphasis was put on the importance of men attending the event, for it is important to acknowledge that men can be victims of domestic violence as well. Statistics were presented to give

domestic abuse occurs. It was stated that more than 57 percent of college students have dealt with some form of domestic violence; 43 percent were women. These were only the instances that were reported. Following the statistics, a true or false game was played to see how much the audience knew about the reality of domestic violence. The speakers defined domestic

abuse as anything from shoving, threatening or restraining to uninvited sexual encounters or cyberstalking. It was emphasized that this could happen to anyone including men, women, children and the elderly. The topic of drug use and its correlation to domestic abuse was addressed and the conclusion the speakers came to was that though drugs can influence it, they are not the root cause behind domestic violence. The only person held accountable for the abuse is the abuser, never the victim. The audience was asked to contemplate reasons as to why people in abusive relationships stay. The reason people stay in abusive relationship is usually something pertaining to economic dependencies, social isolation, cultural obligations and others of the sort. Other reasons people stay include fear, embarrassment, feeling of normalcy, low self-esteem, love, peer pressure, pregnancy and hope. Some warning signs of domestic violence include extreme

the presentation, the facilitators urged the students to take action to help prevent domestic violence in the ODU community. Students were encouraged to ask questions to people who show the warning signs of being in an abusive relationship or signs of domestic abuse. Possible questions to ask are "Are you safe?" and "How can I help?" Third Presidential Debate Brings Arguments to a Close

T.J. Thompson Staff Writer College Democrats and the Student Government Association hosted a debate watch party at Strome Entrepreneurial Center on campus Wednesday night. This was the third and final debate between U.S. presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. The evening began with a welcome from representatives of the SGA. This included an open group discussion regarding issues important to students

Courtesy cnn.com in attendance. When asked which ideas those in attendance would like to hear the candidates discuss, the suggested topics included gun control, clean energy, closing the gender wage gap, marijuana legalization and free college. Open conversation concluded just prior to the candidates taking the stage on television. As Clinton and Trump were introduced, attendees at Strome settled in for the final debate, hoping it would be less like a reality television show than the other de-

bates were. Moderator Chris Wallace of Fox News welcomed the two participants. He settled into questions focusing first on the Supreme Court. Currently, the U.S. Senate is stalling on President Obama’s most recent selection to replace the late Justice Scalia after his passing until a presidential elect is chosen on Nov. 8. The question went first to Clinton, who stated her nominations would uphold the laws and create a better future for the country. Trump attacked Justice Ginsburg for her comments against him, then shifted his response to gun rights and his list of nominees for the empty position if he wins. The open discussion following the first question narrowed down to gun rights and women’s rights. Clinton was attacked on both topics – first her outrage on a Second Amendment

Onward into Discomfort: Teaching Racial Injustice Erin Sudek Staff Writer Dr. Lee Bebout, a professor at Arizona State University, came to ODU to speak about his knowledge and experiences related to his controversially named course “U.S. Race Theory & the Problem of Whiteness” and the media backlash it has received in the past year. The speech was held on Oct. 18 in the Burgess Room in the Batten Arts and Letters Building, which was overflowing with more than 60 interested attendees. Dr. Bebout, a white male, has been interested in the research of Chicano studies, American studies and critical race theory, and constructed his class without believing the content was anything out of the ordinary. He began teaching this course about systematic racism, “whiteness” and the literary concept of an idea of race described by color in June 2015, using literature and rhetoric to see how the idea of race is formed through people’s understandings and experiences. The idea of “whiteness” does not refer to skin color/race, but is defined as the “privileges and power that people who appear “white” receive, because

they are not subject to the racism faced by people of color,” according to the Calgary Anti-Racism Education Organization. “It’s a system we can’t step out of. No person is neutral to the situation, we are born into being participants of this system and we must know and recognize our advantages and inequalities," Bebout said. In January 2016, an ASU student, who was not enrolled in the class, wrote a blog for campus reform against Dr. Bebout’s class, saying it is “anti-white,” which spurred the huge media attention and outbursts he referred to as “white moral panics.” Conservative media companies like Fox News and white-supremacy groups like the Neo-Nazis targeted Dr. Bebout and ASU for allowing such a course, calling him a “race traitor.” “This revealed the dangers and necessity of teaching critical whiteness studies,” said Dr. Bebout in response to the outbursts. ASU struggled to respond to the media attention, which made the tension escalate to the point that Dr. Bebout and his family were receiving hate-mail and even death threats, which he said had huge psychological

and emotional effects on him. There was considerable unrest on ASU’s campus for many months as well, with protests going on for both sides of the controversy and growing involvement with students and other faculty members. Dr. Bebout did however bring up the positive of the situation. The Anti-Defamation League, Southern Poverty Law Center, and other organizations against racial discrimination who supported Dr. Bebout during this conflict gave internships for his students, who are his motivating factor for fighting to keep the course. “This helped achieve real-world experience and showed the impact on the fight with white supremacy,” said Dr. Bebout. He believes he is not what will bring change to racial inequality, but rather his students, and therefore is passionate about his efforts. He discussed how important it is to have these conversations about race, no matter what conflicts are sparked, in order to have effective communication, mutual respect and the change needed for a better world. He plans to teach this course again in the Spring semester, but under a different name.

decision she claimed was an attempt to protect toddlers from gun violence. Trump then went after her support of a woman’s right to choose whether or not to have an abortion. Trump zeroed in on defunding Planned Parenthood, despite them performing many other essential services for women besides abortions, such as cancer screenings and providing women with birth control. The conversation moved to immigration. Trump desires to build a wall along the U.S. and Mexico border while Clinton seeks immigration reform. Clinton also attacked Trump’s use of and refusal to pay undocumented workers in building Trump Towers in Manhattan. The back-andforth arguing, complete with Trump’s multiple interruptions, carried over from the previous two debates into this one, especially on this topic.

Trump turned to Wiki Leaks releasing emails from Clinton. Her defense was the fact that these hacks have been linked to the Russian government in an attempt to influence the election and his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin. By this point in the debate, students who attended the debate-watch party began to lose interest. Other topics included the economy, human rights crisis in Syria, Iraq and the national debt. Conversations in the room were overpowering the volume of the television. Students still paying attention were more interested in the erratic behaviors of the candidates instead of their words. This sums up the experience of the overall 2016 election cycle, due to the fact that many Americans feel it has lacked professionalism and content.

This Week in History

Justin L.C. Ross Contributing Writer

As the semester begins to unfold, one factor that many fellow monarchs are becoming aware of is the progression of time. The famous line of “time marches on” is often an occurring train of thought as the first half of the Fall 2016 semester slips into the past. Dress for Success Hampton Roads Celebrates 10th Anniversary Kim Bering Staff Writer

On Oct. 14, local nonprofit business Dress for Success recognized their 10th anniversary by celebrating with their “Giving Beyond the Suit” gala. The successful evening included several recognitions and thanks, a fashion show and a few personal testimonies from women whose lives have drastically changed because of this business. Dress for Success is a globally run business that has functioned right here in Hampton Roads since Jan. 2006. Their goal is to break the chain of poverty and distress in women that desire to pursue a new life and profession. Over 3,000 women have been successfully helped in just the last 10 years. This business not only clothes women professionally but also implants a vision of confidence and hope in their lives. The evening’s ceremony began with a blessing over the food by Reverend Tyrone Jackson Jr. of First Bap-

tist Church as the guests took hands. Then, Bob Dandrige, honorary chair member, welcomed the audience by thanking them for their support. He also praised his wife, executive and co-founder Debra Dandridge and said, “She has been the driving force,” in regards to the company. The evening followed with a fashion show presented by Chico’s at MacArthur Center Mall. 10 women whose lives have been impacted by Dress for Success confidently strutted across the stage in the “zenergy” collection of lounge and active wear. One of those women's stories told was that of Mary Irwin. “I went from being homeless to owning a home,” Irwin beamed with pride as she informed the audience of the impact Dress for Success had on her life. She left an abusive community with three children under the age of six. She had yet to know about what sort of empowering influence this company would have on her family’s life. Several women were recognized

as “10 Prominent Women” for the company. First lady at Old Dominion University Kate Broderick was thanked as well. The Dress for Success ambassadors were thanked for their contributions and support that have helped impact the business . One of those women, Marian Ticatch, helped found Dress for Success. She reminisced on an impactful quote that an executive director from New York said to her once: “A suit is a suit unless you don’t have one.” This single phrase continues to inspire her goodwill and positivity. Ticatch expounded on the importance of passing on the skill of dressing well, in addition to initiating a change in women’s lives. “If we don’t pass it onto them, we’re not doing our job as women and people,” Ticatch said. Dress for Success goes above and beyond to provide for the many women that need assistance. The ceremony came to a close as Dandrige and fellow co-founder and director Antoinette Haynes expressed their deepest gratitude to the

The Dirty Buffalo Brings New York Style Near Campus Michael McCann Contributing Writer

The Dirty Buffalo is a chicken wing restaurant that offers the flavor of western New York. It has been a local fixture since 2012 when it opened its doors at the corner of Colley Avenue and 42nd Street. It recently expanded its operations a block away, which now boasts a large dining room and video game area. The website describes the place as a “restaurant featuring authentic Buffalo-style chicken wings; and a late-night food establishment where students and other night owls could enjoy freshly-prepared, home-style meals after 11 PM.” This is indeed the case since the chicken wings are made to order. Unlike other restaurants, the chicken wings do not sit underneath a heating lamp. This ensures fresh, crispy wings

that hold the moisture of the chicken but do not have soggy skin. In addition to chicken wings, the restaurant serves subs, hot dogs and salads. The Dirty Buffalo stands out in Virginia for uniquely offering a Rochester, NY favorite: the garbage plate, or, as the restaurant eponymously named it, the “Dirty Plate.” This dish consists of a piece of meat that rests above a bed of sides, such as home fries or baked beans. Since its opening, The Dirty Buffalo has garnered much praise. It has been the recipient of Best of Hampton Roads in 2015 for best wings and placed as runner-up in 2016. The welldeserved awards are not the only measures of success for the restaurant. Patrons entering the restaurant after 5 p.m. on a weekday are bound to see a room full of eager customers filling the tables and bar. The bar itself has a wide range of alcoholic

beverages, which include a variety of beers that are popular in the western New York area. There is also a menu of mixed drinks that have names unique to the Buffalo/Rochester area such as Ellicott Station, Lake Effect Storm and Sabre. The restaurant has 25 different flavors of wings. There are nights that offer cheaper wings during limited hours. These specials combined with cheaper dishes like Poor Man Wings — french fries with a customer’s choice of sauce — make the food easily affordable for ODU students. The restaurant’s proximity allows for those late-night cravings to be satiated when campus options are limited.

Courtesy of thedirtybuffalo.com The restaurant has up to a dozen televisions, where guests can catch different sporting events such as ODU basketball and football games. During the football season, customers can usually catch an NFL game every Sunday. The restaurant usually attracts a large following of sports fans from western New York that often cheer on the Buffalo Bills. A large painted mural on the wall, furthest from the entrance, combines the two cities of Buffalo and Norfolk. One side is painted with Niagara Falls and the Peace Bridge, while the other

side portrays a ship to represent the area’s military presence. A large bison divides the two paintings of the cities. Customers can enjoy themselves with a robust atmosphere, good food and excellent service. For many hungry patrons, it might be difficult to find a quality, wing establishment. The Dirty Buffalo offers an authentic experience from owners native to the area where chicken wings originated. The Dirty Buffalo’s new location is on Colley Avenue and 41st Street. They are open Wednesday through Monday.

Delve Into the Dark with 'Begotten'

Alyssa Branch Contributing Writer

“Begotten” is a truly disturbing yet artistic depiction of the cycle of life. The black and white film is an experimental dark horror fantasy, based on the nihilistic philosophy that life has no meaning. “In 'Begotten,' a time is depicted that predates spoken language; communication is made on a sensory level," director E. Elias Merhige said. The first few minutes are certainly menacing. It begins with a “God” disemboweling itself with a straight razor, and despite the low quality, it is still revolting. The death of the god results in Mother Nature emerging from the corpse, who impregnates herself with his blood and semen, ultimately giving birth to a full grown convulsing man. The group of wandering humanoids defile the woman and kill the man, depicting the rape of Nature and the destruction of Man. They are then dismembered and pounded back into the earth, starting the cycle of life once again. “Begotten” was intended to be part of a trilogy, but uncertainty of the other two films came with lack

of funding. “Din of Celestial Birds,” the second installment, was eventually made in 2006. This film is based on evolution rather than creation and has been released in a 14-minute version intended as the prologue. Edmund Elias Merhige began development of this film in 1984. He was the director, but also worked with the cinematography, special effects, writing and the production. It took over three years to film in various locations. For a 20-day period, they shot on a construction site on the border of New York and New Jersey. According to reports, the idea for the film came to Merhige after a near-death experience in a car accident. After “Begotten,” Merhige directed “Cryptorchid,” a music video for Marilyn Manson. The video even reused footage from “Begotten.” He then went on to direct “Shadow of the Vampire” in 2000. The cast are actors from an experimental theater group, Theater of Material. The cast includes Brian Salzberg as God Killing Himself, Donna Dempsey as Mother Nature and Stephen Charles Bay as Son of Earth. In order to give the film the withered look, a 16mm Arriflex camera

on black and white reversal film was used, and the unshot negative was run through sandpaper to scratch it up before shooting. Merhige also built an optical printer himself, since the budget wouldn’t allow one. Post-production took about eight to ten hours to edit one minute of the film. It took approximately eight months in total for the full 72-minute film. The movie was released on June 5, 1991 and has received various different reviews regarding its sinister ways. The movie has been criticized for its vapidity, yet some say this movie is not made for entertainment. Instead, its meaning is to portray a message in an experimental and artistic manner. Unfortunately, the film could have been much shorter and displayed the same message. Even though it might be for artistic purposes, the repetition and pace of the film takes away from the ominous images and the significant message. This film is truly original, delving into a style of filmmaking that no one has ever attempted before and which most filmmakers are too afraid to do. The compelling use of sound, the grueling imagery, and the complex theme leads the viewers to understand the

deeper meaning of the film, rather than looking at the surface of old, silent and boring films.

"Apple Trees in Flower" by Alfred Sisley Photo by Emily Wood

Monet, van Gogh and More On Display at Chrysler Museum

Emily Wood Contributing Writer

The new exhibit “The Agrarian Ideal in Late 19th Century Art” pulls you through time and back to the late 1800s as you walk through the Chrysler Museum. The pastel colors that splash the walls not only contrast but blend with the European and American art dancing on the walls. The exhibit includes rural paintings and landscape works from French artists such as Monet, Pissaro, Sisley and Gauguin. These painters had been portraying impressionist visions of city life almost chaotically for years, and in the Late 19th century they turned to the countryside. Monet went to Giverny for inspiration in 1883, Pissaro captured Éragny in 1884 and Sisley over-

took the beauty of Moret-sur-Loing in 1880 brush stroke by brush stroke. It is believed that these painters were trying to find a pure subject for their paintings among the war-torn cities of Europe and America. “Meules, fin de l’été (Haystacks, Late Summer)” by Claude Monet is currently on loan by Chrysler from the Museé d’Orsay in Paris. “Haystacks” is part of a 30 painting series that Monet worked on through the winter of 1890-1891. He also has series of poplar trees, water lilies and the designs of Rouen Cathedral. “Haystacks” along with “The Wheat Field behind St. Paul’s Hospital, St. Rémy” by Vincent van Gogh make up quite the exhibit themselves. The beauty van Gogh alone brought to the world while using his pain as a medium has been enough to drop

the world to its knees more than once. These two works do have help from “The Loss of Virginity” by Paul Gauguin, “Song of the Lark” by Winslow Homer and a handful of other painters. “The Wheat Field behind St. Paul’s Hospital, St. Rémy” is an interesting piece in itself because it was painted from the same view as the famous “Starry Night.” And although the paintings have their similarities in landscape, the shocking differences between the two are beautiful beyond words. The two paintings were painted from the vantage point of van Gogh’s hospital room at a mental hospital he voluntarily checked himself into in his later years preceding his death. Homer himself lived in New York and was a part of Harper’s Magazine

in 1876 through the Civil War Era. He brought an American spin to the awe-striking admiration of the field workers. He gave his paintings an American spin off of the French Impressionist phase, by inadvertently glorifying the American farmer as well. Paul Gauguin moved from Paris to the country province of France. He worked on “The Loss of Virginity” from 1890-1891 while he was in Brittany. The painting itself took away from the fertility aspect of wheat and gave it the more hopeless cycle of life theme; the piece is morosely beautiful. The theme of wheat in this exhibit is symbolic in showing the fertility and cycle of life, something that is forgotten easily in the city. It is rumored that “Haystacks” accidentally showed

this symbolism and artists everywhere took up the symbol and made it their own. Van Gogh, Gauguin and Homer all portray their own versions of the symbolism of purity in wheat fields. The Chrysler Museum of Art is a stress-relieving destination for everyone from college students to accountants. It is in Downtown Norfolk at 245 W Olney Road, their latest exhibit is attracting plenty of onlookers by populating the walls of the hallowed ground of the building. If you find yourself downtown with an itch to see some art or a strong need for stress relief, go and see “The Agrarian Ideal” while it is here. Admission is free. MONARCH MUSIC MINUTE Hell YES!

We’re Getting There...

Yellowcard ‘Yellowcard’

After many years together, the band Yellowcard is saying their goodbyes. They didn’t leave their fans emptyhanded, though. Along with the announcement of their departure from the music world, they also released a farewell album and tour. Yellowcard has embodied what early 2000s pop-punk should sound like. This theme has stayed consistent with their music, and latest album is no exception. They have stuck with their roots and didn’t branch far away from what’s safe for them. The self-titled album, released on Sept. 30, has shown just how little the band has evolved from their ear-

ly 2000s work. The band first gained momentum with their hit single “Ocean Avenue” in 2003. Luckily for them, the idea of being 16 and in love was a popular concept at the time. Now, though, it seems everyone has grown up except them. The band would not leave without a proper goodbye, and the track “Rest in Peace” shares that farewell with the listeners. Even though the track is featured as the opening song of the album, it is built around bidding farewell to their fan base. The music video features pictures from their years of touring. Other songs like “A Place We Set

Afire” include lyrics like “Try to breathe the air that's here and now / Try to find some peace in falling out.” Hit single “The Hurt is Gone” encompasses the main point of the album and has lines like, “Whatever lies ahead / The things that we have said will slowly fade / Nothing can remain.” Unfortunately, nothing about the album stands out. It’s built on half decent beats and run-of-the-mill guitar riffs. It’s not terrible, but also not remarkable. Any dedicated fan will enjoy, but Yellowcard’s goodbye just fell short.

The Game ‘1992'

One of the more nostalgic albums released this year, “1992” still battles with modern issues. The album is an aggressive take on police brutality, the bigoted judicial system and throwbacks to childhood classics. Jayceon Terrell Taylor, or more commonly known by his stage name, The Game, is the talent behind “1992.” The album, released on Oct. 14, is an aggressive take on wistful thinking with a mix of The Game’s personal angry feelings towards societal conflicts. The opening track on “1992” sets the tone for the rest of the album. “Savage Lifestyle” holds nothing back as The Game addresses his feelings

towards racism in America. The lyrics, “Cause the government corrupt, I can prove it / Martin, Malcolm, Huey P. Newton /And that’s why the whole city out here looting,” gets right to the point. “1992” has shown that The Game has the ability to make things personal, yet relatable. “I Grew Up On Wu-Tang Clan” shares a childhood memory. It’s honest and raw, and while that may come across as intimidating to some, it’s what The Game wants people to hear. “F--- Orange Juice” takes another political stance. It’s charged, and The Game trash talks Trump while defending O.J. Simpson. The line “These

white people votin' for Trump / But they don't give a f--- about OJ,” makes it pretty clear on how The Game feels about the situation. Other tracks keep up Game’s honest nature. For instance, “92 Bars” is a clear diss on Meek Mill. “Young N----s” takes a more solemn turn and talks about the harsh reality of losing a friend to a gang. “1992” has the perfect mix of harsh modernism and some nostalgic thinking. The Game has taken the music of today to tell a story of the past. It has the potential to be one the best rap albums of 2016.

‘Simple Forms’

The Mace & Crown

Taking a turn from their mellow approach on “In Rolling Waves,” “Simple Forms” is more reminiscent of The Naked and Famous’ earlier works. In a pleasant change, the album is lead by strong vocals and confident lyrics as opposed to their typical electronic beats. Released on Oct. 14, “Simple Forms” is compiled of pop-synth ballads and catchy, upbeat lyrics. Lead vocalist Alisa Xayalith with her singular, demanding voice supports the music and grabs the listener’s attention. This gives the band a unique edge in a genre that’s easily over-worked.

The album kicks off with hit single “Higher.” It’s an energetic, carefree song that sets up an almost misleading tone for the rest of the album. Xayalith showcases her rigid vocals as she croons on about being independent and carefree. “The Water Beneath You” takes on a downtrodden feeling, even with the upbeat tempo. The song is about a painful breakup that the singer can’t help but feel guilty over. Lyrics like “I hear you, defeated, and calling out my name / The guilt that is forever mine / To know that I'm to blame for every / Tear and every sigh,” show a different side of the album, giving the

@maceandcrown

@maceandcrown

listener something familiar and leaving something to hold on to. Other tracks off the album like “My Energy” and “Losing Our Control” keeps up the theme that “The Water Beneath You” sets. Though each track keeps up the theme of losing control, there’s still a positive pin and Xayalith’s vocals to keep you interested. “Simple Forms” is emotional, catchy and solid. The Naked and Famous don’t hold back as they get in touch with their electro-pop roots. It’s different without having the group stray too far from their own sound. It’s self-assured, and it might even be their best yet.

‘The Nightmare’

2015 | Unrated | 90 min.

In the 2015 documentary “The Nightmare,” documentarian Rodney Ascher explores the subject of sleep paralysis, a disorder that leaves the sufferer unable to move as they are asleep or awake. As the film goes on, audiences come to learn that while people with sleep paralysis are in a petrified state, they begin to experience frightening hallucinations that perpetually haunt them. Ascher investigates the phenomenon by interviewing the people who struggle with the disorder and the nightmarish hallucinations that

occur during paralysis. Although the interviews themselves can be quiet spooky, Ascher decides to go the extra mile and recreate the scenes laid out by the interviews using professional actors to show the true nature of the unruly condition. A film like “The Nightmare” is one that will make viewers afraid of the dark and what lies within it. The scenes that Ascher recreates for the viewer are downright terrifying and serve the film greatly. Although he is only known for documentaries like this and “Room 237,” Asher shows

that he truly knows horror and how to let it play out on screen. The only real shortcoming of the film is that it never really stems past being an experimentation in dramatized recreations. Sleep paralysis itself is never explored as a medical condition and really gives no answers to explain what it is. However, “The Nightmare” is worth a viewing just for the brilliant and effective atmosphere and suspense that build throughout. This film is available on Netflix

‘Dark’

2015 | Unrated | 93 min. Taking place during the 2003 blackout that engulfed New York City, “Dark” follows the character of Kate (Whitney Able), a former model turned yoga instructor. When Kate’s girlfriend leaves the city to see family, Kate finds herself trapped in the darkness that overtakes New York soon after her departure. As Kate maneuvers through the dark of the city, her mental state begins to unravel. Things begin to take a suspenseful turn for Kate when she starts to fear that someone may be lurking in her

apartment. As Kate wrestles with the personal demons that play tricks on her, she must also maintain her composure to survive a stranger that may or may not be lurking in the shadows. To get the most out of “Dark” the audience has to understand two things. For one, “Dark” isn’t so much of a horror movie then it is a slow-burn thriller. Many of the scares come from the insecurities and doubts that stem from the film’s main character. Admittedly it takes “Dark” a while to get going, and this could create a problem

for the film’s audience. The other thing to understand about “Dark” is the fact that this is a character study first and foremost. Able gives the audience a layered character who lives with regret and shows doubt about her future with someone she loves. Kate is not always likable, but she still makes for an interesting character that can successfully carry the film. This film is available on Netflix

‘Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse’ 2015 | R | 92 min.

Since the death of his father, Augie (Joey Morgan) along with his friends Ben (Tye Sheridan) and Carter (Logan Miller), have devoted a chunk of their friendship to the boy scouts. While Augie still finds enjoyment from the uniform, Ben and Chuck begin to question whether or not they have gotten too old to be boy scouts. As the three friends deal with the idea of growing up and moving on, a virus strikes through the town they live in causing a zombie outbreak. Using the skills they’ve learned as scouts, the boys have to fight their

way through an army of the undead in order to save their town and their loved ones. While “Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse” never truly reaches the potential of being a great zombie comedy like “Shaun of the Dead,” the film certainly offers a fun, and at times chuckle-worthy, romp. Although many of the gross-out set pieces can come off very juvenile, director Christopher Landon shows that he has an eye for visual comedy. This visual comedy offers a majority of the film’s comedic hits.

The Mace & Crown

Though the film does have many comedic moments that work, there are far too many instances where the jokes fail to make any impact. Landon shows many instances of creativity with the disgustingly bloody moments of the movie, but he relies far too much on cheap sex jokes that appear at random moments throughout the movie. He does no favors for himself by lingering on those moments with misplaced confidence. This film is available on Hulu Plus and Amazon Prime

Old Dominion (4-3, 2-1 CUSA) traveled to HouchensSmith Stadium in a highly anticipated conference clash against a proven conference champion. After starting the season 1-2 the Monarchs strung together a three-game win streak in which two of those wins came against conference opponents, leading the team to a 2-0 record in conference play. The Monarchs were riding high after impressive performances in which they averaged over 40 points and only allowed 17 points per game. In what appeared to be the Monarch’s first real test in the conference, the team seemed to possess a large amount of confidence, however, they were seemingly humbled as they fell to Western Kentucky (5-3, 3-1 C-USA) 59-24. The Hilltoppers struck fast scoring on their first drive and the Monarchs struggled to find their groove. At the end of the first quarter, the Hilltoppers

were seemingly unstoppable on both sides of the football as they dominated with an average of 10 yards per play. Their quarterback Mike White started the night on fire by completing his first 10 passes for 95 yards. For the game, he passed for 378 yards, throwing four touchdown passes and completing 28 of 32 passes. His favorite target was wide receiver Taywan Taylor who finished with 10 receptions and 123 yards receiving. The Hilltoppers weren't only successful through the air as they also compiled 107 rushing yards. Running back Anthony Wales finished with 157 yards rushing on 15 attempts, and Quinton Baker finished with 68 yards rushing on 12 attempts. The Hilltoppers scored on their first five drives jumping out to a 35-0 lead on the Monarchs in the second quarter, but the Monarchs responded with scores of their own which included two big plays of 53 yards, both coming from Old Dominion’s quarterback David Washington, one on a slant pass to wide receiver Travis Fulgham,

and the other a deep ball to wide receiver Zach Pascal just before the half. Despite the big plays coming on offense in the second quarter, the Monarchs still found themselves trailing 52-14 at halftime in which the Hilltoppers tallied 459 yards of total offense to just 200 for the Monarchs. Western Kentucky dominated the game from jump keeping the Monarch’s defense on their heels for most of the game with their run-pass attack shredding ODU's defense for over 600 yards of total offense. All night WKU's offensive line created gaping holes for their running backs that lead to a tune of seven yards per rush on the night. ODU's two-headed rushing attack struggled and only produced 67 yards rushing for the game. With the running game struggling the Monarchs had to

put the ball up in the air but the offense line had trouble protecting Washington who threw for 263 yards two scores. The Monarch’s defense improved in the second half holding the Hilltoppers offense to only seven points in the second half, however, the game was already out of reach. Throughout the game, neither could handle their emotions. Late in the third quarter a brawl broke leading to the clearing of the benches, and an ejection (ODU backup safety Jamshyer McUmb). The game was chippy all night, and the Monarchs were unable to channel that energy into positive results on the field. The Monarchs will look to bounce back next week as they travel to El Paso, Texas to take on the UTEP Miners in another conference game. Kickoff is set for 8 pm.

Monarch Soccer Woes Continue as They Run Out of Time

Old Dominions men’s soccer team lost its third straight game to Conference USA’s leader South Carolina. It’s been six games since the Monarchs have stepped off the field with a victory as they now sit with an overall record of 3-6-2 and are dead last in the Conference at 0-3-1.

The Gamecocks are now 9-4-1 overall and remain undefeated in conference play at 4-0-1. South Carolina spread the wealth with three different players scoring in the match. They didn’t waste any time getting on the scoreboard as they found the back of the net in the 15th minute. Danny Deakin who leads them in assists got the ball to Bjorn Gudjonsson for his fourth goal of the season.

Gudjonsson's goal would be the only score of the first half. In the 47th minute, Koty Milliard extended the lead to 2-0 with his first goal of the season and started a scoring outburst. ODU finally got on the scoreboard five minutes later when sophomore Johan De Picker scored for the first time this season but the Gamecocks quickly responded. ODU outshot South Carolina 21 to nine and attempted more corner kicks, ten to four. The Gamecocks goalie William Pyle is the reason all those attempts only amounted into one goal, tallying six saves and improving his record to 9-2-1. The Monarchs will be back on the field Oct. 26 looking to end their losing streak. Next they will travel to West Virginia for a matchup against Marshall.

police abuse and misconduct. There was a 93 percent drop in citizen complaints when police wore the body cameras. Prior to the study, there had been 1,539 complaints in the agencies that participated in the study. That dropped to 113 during the 12 months in which the study took place. “Individual officers become more accountable, and modify their behaviour accordingly, while the more disingenuous complaints from the public fall by the wayside once footage is likely to reveal them as frivolous." Dr. Ariel said. In the U.K., there are 45 police departments where officers are equipped with body cameras, according to a Press Association survey. In the U.S., “several large police departments have their officers use body cameras, but there are still thousands of smaller departments that do not.” There are many questions surrounding the use of body cameras.

The New York Police Department spent months creating the rules regarding body camera usage, according to the New York Times. No

Ross Reelachart Technology Editor The Civilization franchise is widely considered to the benchmark against which all over 4X (explore, expand, exploit and exterminate) strategy games have been measured against. The series continues to hold that lofty position with the release of its latest numbered entry, “Civilization VI.” Like every entry before it, “Civilization VI” improves on the series’ formula while also adding new wrinkles that freshen up the addictive “one more turn” gameplay.

kinds of victory conditions, whether it be total military domination or being the first to launch an interstellar rocket. It’s a familiar gameplay loop that Firaxis Games successfully adds a new layer upon with the introduction of a few new mechanics. The most significant change in the Civilization formula is the addition of city “districts.” In previous entries, a city is represented by a center hex around which the borders of the city grow, and every building is built in that center hex. In “Civilization VI,"

As with every Civilization game, players take control of one of many different nations, often represented by a notable person from that nation’s history, and attempt to guide their nation from ancient beginnings to modern times. With every turn that passes, players build units and cities, research technologies and attempt to achieve one of several different

hexes within the city borders can be allocated to specialized districts that give certain bonuses based on placement and its adjacency to other districts or terrain features. The addition of districts means that not every city will grow in the same fashion, as the terrain will often restrict or encourage certain dis-

tricts and buildings. Additionally, the limited amount of hexes also means that not every city can be good at everything, and space must be allocated with care. The effect is that city planning is far more involved and requires more strategic planning or specialization to be effective. This is good because it forces players to adapt to new situations. But it also means that players will need a far better sense of foresight because they’ll need to know what to do, or not do, at the moment in order to leave themselves space or resources in later turns. There are other differences that subtly change the way the game will feel to Civilization veterans. There is a small, technical change to the way units move that will make military units feel slower. This change also magnifies the usefulness of the new ability to combine military units with non-combat units into one single unit. Builders, once the automated build-everything units of previous games, are now limited-use units that must be carefully used

Recently, an increasing number of police officers have been equipped with body cameras. While there have been some issues in regards to body cameras being worn by police officers, a study has shown that there have been less complaints when an officer is wearing the camera. The study was conducted by Cambridge University, and 2,000 law enforcement officials across four agencies in the U.K. and two agencies in the U.S. participated in the study, according to Housely. Dr. Barak Ariel, the leader of the study, mentioned that officers and civilians were encouraged to treat each other reasonably as a result of the body cameras. The presence of the body cameras created an environment of mutual accountability. He also mentioned that the camera footage was also able to alleviate the public’s fears related to

ing someone’s property, conducting a car stop, or interacting with an “emotionally disturbed person.”” Officers were also advised to inform the public when they were being recorded. There are also situations where officers can't turn on their body cameras. Protests are one example, as they are a “constitutionally protected political activity.” However, there could be situations presented within the protest where an officer would need to turn on their body camera, such as mass arresting protesters or using force. Locally, all of the Hampton Roads police departments, with the exception of Virginia Beach, use body cameras, according to the Virginian-Pilot. Capt. A wide and angular jaw framed the smile, although it was not like the pretty boys from Hollywood; it was more human than that. Curls were something of excess, framing his face in black and gold. Here and there a hair was grey, despite youthful age. The locks of hair fell below broad shoulders yet above his thin torso. A particular blond streak against the black fell down in those chocolate brown eyes when the mood was snarky and flirtatious. He reached six feet in height, but the blows that Fate had dealt weighed his shoulders to a shrug. The stature of a modern knight; one who had seen perilous dangers and been victoriously damaged. His beard was full, patch-worked with early greying hair. Clothing was always worn too big due to insecurities cancer creates. Countless scars stood to attention across his skin, all with their own story and a reason for being present. Among scars, tattoos were etches into the tan skin, only two of which were seen by the general public. A koi fish waded down his leg as it walked.
