Monarch Dies in Tragic Car Crash
Justin Louis Coleman Ross
Contributing Writers In the early morning hours of Aug. 12, tragedy struck the Old Dominion campus. Monarch Jordan Zimmerman was killed in an automobile accident when his car was struck by a drunk driver. As reported by the local media and the Virginian Pilot, the accident took place on West Little Creek Road around 1 a.m. The collision was perpetrated by 21-year-old Paul James Fraki, whose blood alcohol level was later tested at being over four times the legal limit.
Fellow Monarch Quetel Sellers was also in the vehicle during the accident. While Sellers survived the crash with injuries to his person, Zimmerman passed away at the scene. The Norfolk Police Department did not return calls for comment on the current status of the investigation. In response to this horrible tragedy, many fellow monarchs have drawn together to celebrate the life of Zimmerman. ODU's NAACP held a candle light vigil for Zimmerman on Sept. 16 at the Kaufman Mall. All in attendance gathered in strength, sympathy and shared memory to celebrate the
life of Jordan. “The deep friendship we shared was based on mutual respect, brotherly love, and the strength of involvement in our campus,” Montae Taylor, president of the NAACP chapter said. Taylor went on to say that it was through Zimmerman’s charisma and constant encouragement that he became a student leader. Zimmerman was a successful and active student leader on campus through involvement with the Student Government Association, Parks and Recreation and the ODU chapter of the NAACP. All those who remember Jordan spoke of the
beauty of his character and the rich blessing his friendship was to all the men, women and children who knew him. “Jordan was an amazing young man who was extremely dedicated to his success and becoming a father,” Frederick Wagner, father of Jordan’s girlfriend Mia, said. “Jordan was very charismatic and humble. A man filled with joy, who was constantly happy.” Zimmerman was expecting the birth of his first child with his girlfriend Mia. “Those who were blessed with Jordan’s memory are strengthened in the knowledge that his memory lives on
in those who knew him”Rachael Edmonds said, speaker from the Old Dominion University Student Government Association. “Let us continue to pay his kindness, encouragement and love forward by positively touching the lives of others as Jordan did throughout his life.” It can be said with the utmost truth that ODU and the world lost a beacon of light with the untimely passing of Jordan. However, as all those in attendance who knew Jordan related, his memory lives on in their hearts and in the good deeds paid forward by all of his friends and family.
Democratic Vice-Presidential Candidate Tim Kaine Hosts Rally
Erin Sudek Staff Writer
Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s running mate, Sen. Tim Kaine, a former governor of Virginia, hosted a campaign rally outside of Rollins Hall on ODU’s campus. About 300 students and Hampton Roads residents attended the event which was held on Sept. 9. Anne Holton, who is the former VA secretary of education, introduced Sen. Kaine to the audience. She emphasized the “Stronger Together” slogan that Clinton’s campaign has adopted, and the power of women in government. The speech began with recognizing and thanking many individuals who have supported the democratic campaign, and led directly into the qualifications of the democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. Sen. Kaine brought up the recent anniversary of the tragic events on 9/11, and how Clinton, at that time the senator of NY, spent years fighting for and acquiring funds to rebuild the city and to offer first responders' health care treatment. He highlighted her efforts during her time on the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC), where she fought for the aid and support of military families during deployment.
“We can’t make military service easy, but we can try to make being a military family easier,” Sen. Kaine said. Sen. Kaine and Clinton have both been strong supporters of the military, namely Norfolk and Old Dominion’s military affiliated students and their families. The importance of diplomacy and alliances was addressed as well, along with the democratic campaign’s stance on the battlefields in Syria and Iraq. The Clinton campaign believes in in the strength of alliances and the sharing of intelligence in order to ensure national and international safety. This contrasts with the republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s stance on diplomacy, which Sen. Kaine described as “dangerous.” Sen. Kaine pointed out that Trump “trashes” the military and “severs” alliances, which brought up the question of who will share intelligence with the US if our national security is at risk? “Building walls and tearing down alliances will make us weaker not stronger,” said Sen. Kaine. Trump’s “unpatriotic” infatuation with Vladamir Putin, the president of the Russian Federation, was another topic of discussion. Sen. Kaine claimed that Trump cannot differen-
The Mace & Crown
tiate between dictatorship and leadership, which is a slippery slope as a presidential candidate. Sen. Kaine discussed the controversy of climate change, and that the democratic campaign does indeed “believe in science” and recognizes that it is real, and that we have to “take responsibility and do something,” which contrasts with Trump’s position that it does not exist. Clinton wants to make moves to protect communities by investing in infrastructure, sponsoring ‘green’ products and creating a clean energy economy with jobs in fields that work towards reducing the harmful effects on the planet that contribute to climate change. This is especially important in Norfolk, which has seen water levels rise in past years and, in turn, experiences a large amount of flooding during the year. “I think it’s great that they care about climate change and the rising sea-levels around the Hampton Roads area because it’s a major issue that a lot of local politicians neglect or have trouble with here,” senior Tommy Kiesner said. Education and the enormous amount of student debt within the country were also addressed, and Clinton’s ambitious vision of debtfree college and a new economic plan

Photos by Josef Hicks within the first 100 days in office was announced, which will invest in skills and education. Sen. Kaine countered that with Trump’s lack of a plan for student debt, and his "scandalous and fraudulent” history in education with Trump University and it’s followed lawsuits. The Clinton Foundation, which is a non-profit organization created by the Clinton family, and its work towards problems like AIDS and pover-

ty worldwide heightened Sen. Kaine’s point about the contrasting nature of Clinton’s and Trump’s focus. Sen. Kaine closed with some inspiring words of hope for success and the election of the first female president. “We are the underdog until we win the election,” Kaine said. Virginia polls for the presidential election will be held on Nov 8.

Genderbending Event Hosted by Women’s Center Erin Sudek Staff Writer
ODU’s Women’s Center hosted a panel discussion on gender fluidity/ sexual orientation, bullying and sexual harassment on Sept. 14. Panelists included Sara Van Gorder, Tommy R. Bennett and Wayman Lewis. Sara Van Gorder is the creator of “Sexreality," a sexual education organization that works to educate the public on sexual health and helps parents talk to their children about sex. She also has done work in the LGBT community promoting equality, presenting anti-homophobia workshops and mentoring youth who are questioning their sexuality or are coming out. Tommy R. Bennett is an LGBT activist and runs a suicide prevention/anti-bullying campaign. He has worked closely with democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton as
an LGBT outreach liaison and has spoken on Oprah about his experiences being bullied as a gay man. He also hosts a radio show on iHeartRadio on Tuesdays from 2-6 p.m. and a segment called “What the Hell” on the TV-One cable network. Wayman Lewis is an anti-bullying activist and founder of Exet, an antibullying organization that runs afterschool and summer programs for preteens and teens. The discussion started with Gorder talking about the wide spectrum of sexual identity using the Genderbread Person, an interactive tool to better understand personal identity regarding gender. The tool includes five categories: gender identity, gender expression, biological sex, sexual attraction and romantic attraction; each category has a spectrum which the participant may choose where they feel they are personally at. The website also clarifies the mean-
ing of each category and gives definitions to specific terminology. “Life is not that simple, everyone experiences it a little differently,” Gorder said, “I think it’s really healthy to be conscious about how we identify.” Gorder then moved on to discuss abstinence, and asked the audience to reconsider the perception that it something to get rid of, and instead think of it as something a person goes through during life. She encouraged having a sex readiness checklist to force yourself to think through the process. Gorder also discussed her experiences and advice with sex dialogue between partners, as well as with parents and children. “It’s going to be awkward, but the key is choosing the best opportunity and being honest and open.” Some gender terminology was also clarified. For example gynosexual, (attraction to women), androsexual
(attraction to men) and demisexual (when one feels sexual attraction only to people with whom they have an emotional bond), among other terms used today. “Some people get bogged down by all the terms, but don’t. They’re only created to help people describe themselves and how they feel,” said Gorder. The conversation then moved to Tommy R. Bennett, who began with a video clip of his debut on Oprah in 2009. In the video, he described his fourth grade experience of using his pink Cinderella lunchbox, which was the reason for the teasing, as a weapon to fight off a bully. “When you live in this world, you’ve got to laugh, you’ve got to have a sense of humor. Live and let live,” said Bennett. He talked about personal experiences and spoke of how he dealt with name calling as a gay adolescent, emphasizing the importance of a support system for every individual.
Bennett also discussed suicide, and living in fear because of bullying. He reiterated that those in distress “Must tell someone that it is infringing on your human rights. Sometimes you have to hit that subject head on, either confront that person or tell someone,” Bennett said. Wayman Lewis had an interactive activity for the audience that highlighted the reality of youth suicide. Each group was given an article about a child who killed themselves due to bullying, then everyone shared and discussed how situations like those presented could have been prevented. “If you remain neutral, then you side with the bully,” president of the ODU OUT student alliance Lexi Nobrega said. Further discussion about homophobia, sexism and personal stories lead the forum to a close and ended with casual conversation between the audience and panelists.
Introducing DrunkMode Saami Aslam Contributing Writer Although going to classes, completing assignments and studying for exams is a big part of the college experience, so is socializing and partying. When going out and drinking, one should take special precautions. That is where the DrunkMode app comes in handy. DrunkMode has been around for about three years as an app, and two years as a business. The app was created by 25-year-old Joshua Anton, who is the CEO of the app development team. He started college at Northern Virginia Community College, where he graduated with his associate degree in business administration degree, then moving on to the University of Virginia, where he graduated with a bachelor's in commerce with a concentration in marketing and IT. He had four goals, which were writing and publishing a book, building an app, starting a public speaking
firm and figuring out how to market anything he wanted. He has been successful in achieving these goals. He published a book called "Investing: Blunt and to the Point" in 2012. Anton was also featured in a commercial for Unilever on defying the millennial stereotype. Anton was inspired to create the DrunkMode application the night of a UVA Block Party in 2012 after he himself had been drunkenly called by a crush. It took about nine months to get the app out there, but he and his team were very hardworking and determined. According to its site, the DrunkMode app is, “the app that helps you get crazy and stay safe.” The goal of the app is to make everyone’s night out safe, while allowing for maximum good times. Having over 1.3 million downloads, the app is great for being responsible and safe when drinking, as well as keeping track of your drunk friends. It is continuously growing in popularity and has about 30,000-

50,000 new users every month. Features include the ability to block your contacts, track your friends, find hot spots and locate a ride home. The blocking your contacts feature, “Stop Drunk Dialing,” allows you to select and add phone contacts to a callblocker list which prevents you from making calls to certain people. The track your friends feature, “Find My Drunk,” allows you to find your friends through GPS to make sure they are safe, as well as ensuring that you don’t lose them when you are out partying. The “Find a Safe Ride Home” feature helps you quickly find a ride home and also shows you the walking directions to your friends’ locations. Anton’s future plans include further developing an app called "XMode," which maps life, and combines information online and offline to bring people together. According to Anton, "X-Mode" is “Mapping powered by humanity, to empower humanity.” When asked what his

other goals and ambitions were, he said, “When I die on a rocking chair 50-70 years from now, I want to leave a legacy that I had some influence in helping solve the alternative energy and water issues of today. By solving these issues, we could help some of the big issues of today from

Is Marijuana Decriminalization Coming to Norfolk?
T.J. Thompson Contributing Writer
In preparation for the Virginia Municipal League (VML) Conference, which will occur from Oct. 9-11, Norfolk City Council addressed issues they would like to place in their legislative package to be sent to Richmond. This package includes the issues they wish legislators in the General Assembly would consider during their session. According to their website, the VML is a body consisting of civic leaders from 38 cities, 160 counties and eight towns across Virginia. A topic brought up for consideration in the Aug. 23 meeting of Norfolk City Council was the decriminalization of small amounts of marijuana. Councilman Paul Riddick brought
up this topic to be considered for the Norfolk legislative package because he believes it's time the Virginia General Assembly addresses policies which have been in place since the '70s. According to a 2015 study conducted at Shenandoah University by Dr. Jon Gettman, while the national average for simple marijuana possession arrests declined over an 11 year period by 6.5 percent, this rate increased in Virginia by 76 percent. What is more appalling is comparing arrest rates of African-Americans to those of their white counterparts. Although use by African-Americans in Virginia is slightly higher than Caucasians (11.3 to 9.1 percent respectively), arrest rates in 2013 were 233 percent greater for blacks
The Mace & Crown
when compared with whites regarding simple marijuana possession. In Norfolk alone, an African-American is five times more likely to be arrested for this minor infraction. Councilman Riddick believes decriminalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana could free up city resources as well as pave the way for Virginia to catch up with the 21 other states which have either decriminalized marijuana, or are waiting for decriminalization to take affect. This is currently a discussion and can only be considered by the Virginia General Assembly, at the earliest during their 2017 legislative session beginning in January. In Virginia, all legislative power rests within the hands of the General Assembly, and cities cannot implement
@maceandcrown
their own laws overriding state laws. Where a difference could possibly be made is through the enforcement of those laws. City council could request the police cease arresting people for simple marijuana possession as well as stop the prosecution by the Commonwealth’s Attorney for these types of arrests. This would then place simple marijuana possession at the lowest possible level of enforcement by the city police, allowing them to focus on other issues that may affect society in a more negative way. This topic is important to students because of the implications it can have upon their future. With even a low level drug offense, federal financial aid will be forfeited, possibly causing a student to be unable to afford a higher education. A conviction can also
@maceandcrown
scar job applications as well as create a financial burden upon a young adult. Virginia statute also requires the forfeiture of your driver’s license (even if no vehicle was involved in the arrest) for a simple possession charge. These are burdens which further disenfranchise younger generations. As Norfolk prepares their dialogue for the VML conference, one can only imagine how the reception of marijuana decriminalization will be received. With an overwhelming majority of support on the topic in Hampton Roads (77 percent according to a Wason Center Poll at Christopher Newport University in Jan. 2015), is it time for progress on this conversation?

Jacie Litz Contributing Writer After a long day, very few things sound as good as a cold beer. Nothing reflects hard work and relaxation in the same space like the atmosohere of Rip Rap Brewing Company, where ‘Liam Bell and Ben Mcelroy opened the doors on April 29. Bell, with a big smile and easygoing attitude, poured beer while talking about the new brewery.
Photo by Tayla Mallory Bell started brewing beer at home three years ago while stationed out of Portsmouth for shore duty with the Coast Guard. With more time on his hands, his hobby of beer brewing grew. “I started with a little turkey fryer at first,” Bell said, “Then started making bigger batches and switched to all-grain brewing very quickly. Then I built a kegerator with seven taps.”
Rip Rap Brewing is a small, white building located at 116 E. 25th St. in Norfolk. The glass garage entrance opens up to concrete floors and wooden picnic tables. The three-tier gravity system, located behind the bar, is in full view. Bell said, “[Ben] was real handy. He welded up the tower so we could have our system.” Their brewing system was not the only thing recycled. The partners replaced the refrigeration on a shipping container for their storage room, and the doors and bar top were repurposed from an auction at the old Norfolk courthouse. Even though Rip Rap is down the street from another popular brewery, “[Breweries] tend to do well when close to one another,” Bell said, “ [It’s] a collaborative industry that is supportive, which is kind of cool.” The craft beer scene in Norfolk has been growing and getting stronger. Rip Rap adds to this scene with a monthly rotating menu with a variety of beers. They offer a range of styles that can appeal to any palate. The Breakwater cream ale is light and easy to drink. The Block and Tackle IPA has the classic hops bitterness with a smooth, refreshing finish. The
Rye Not Have Another? Roggenbier is slightly spicy with a light hops flavor. The Park Place porter is dark and gives a distinct roast coffee finish. They offer a flight of four beers of your choice, a full glass or even a growler. When asked about his favorite brew so far, Bell said, “I don’t know about favorite, but the one I am most proud of would be the imperial red ale. It was the most difficult since it’s such a big beer, a little more goes into it.” Indeed, as the strongest beer on the menu, the Keelhaul imperial red ale reflects strong hop bitterness at the beginning, but smooth, sweet malt at the end. Between pouring beers, Bell checks on the batch brewing in the back. His passion and dedication for craft beer clearly shows. “I like making a lot of different stuff, so we rotate. We don’t have a flagship [beer] per say, but we do a lot of seasonal stuff. So being small gives [us] that flexibility,” Bell explained. To keep up with events and beer releases follow Rip Rap on Facebook or their website. They are open Thursday and Friday from 5-10 p.m., Saturday 12-10 p.m. and Sunday 1-7 p.m.
Album Review: Young the Giant's ‘Home of the Strange’
Baylee Blume Contributing Writer
In their third full-length album, “Home of the Strange,” Young the Giant breaks new ground with a variety of different musical explorations while retaining some of the hooks that fans have come to know. The variety of musical influences displayed throughout the album create an interesting and engaging listening experience, blending everything from glam-rock influences on “Elsewhere” to disco-funk on “Silvertongue.” Lead vocalist Sameer Gadhia shines throughout, his vocals providing the tying factor of the songs and showcasing his vocal range, dynamics and tonalities. The album was produced by Jeff Bhasker, who is known for his work with artists such as Kanye West and Bruno Mars. His high-quality
The Mace & Crown
production techniques add a layer of pop-sheen to the engaging indierock sound, creating tight, concisely orchestrated gems. Songs are reminiscent of glam-group Jellyfish and even the early days of the Beatles, but with a modern twist. The tunes contain lots of funky, danceable beats overlaid with synth-textures and keys. These factors allow this album to be accessible to pop listeners and fans alike. It is also the group’s greatest conceptual work, focusing on the identity crisis felt by first-generation Americans from immigrant families. These feelings are reflected in the opening track, “Amerika,” in which a certain skepticism about the actual freedom of this land is displayed. Several of the band’s members come from immigrant backgrounds. In a time when taking any sort of political stance is considered treading on uneven ground, Young the Giant puts it all
@maceandcrown
out there with intensely powerful lyrics throughout. Overall, “Home of the Strange” is the group’s greatest artistic statement to date. It combines many different musical influences with their more traditional indie-rock sound. These sounds tied together with the album’s funky feel throughout make it a very
entertaining listen. The album works as a whole, so it's important to listen to it in its entirety. There are a lot of hidden gems, most notably, “Titus Was Born” and “Art Exhibit.” Other notable songs on the album include “Elsewhere,” “Mr. Know-It-All” and “Silvertongue.”

The true Enfield hauntings started in 1977 and didn’t end until 1979. It appeared first in a bedroom with a chest of drawers moving; their mother, Peggy, tried to push it back, but could not. The family retreated to the neighbor’s, who agreed to check it out.
Neighbor Vic Nottingham heard knocking all over the house. Janet Hodgson claims to have levitated, but nowhere near as dramatically as the movie portrays. The pictures show that she could have just jumped, but there were witnesses as well. Apparently, recordings of Janet speaking with a frightening voice inspired the possession of Bill Wilkins, the man had actually died in the corner chair in their living room. Janet believed it wasn’t truly evil, and that it just wanted to be a part of their family. Over 30 witnesses have said they saw strange paranormal incidents occur in the house. Janet believed it was a priest that calmed the hauntings down, but not to completely end. Peggy claimed to hear noises at night
many years after, and Billy said it felt as if someone was always watching. Madison Wolfe gives an amazing performance portraying both the scared and confused little girl Janet, as well as the terrifying possessed Janet. Through her facial expressions, Wolfe was able to show the evil of possession and also the fear of what was happening to her. Wolfe wore a wig to hide her blonde hair and fake teeth to resemble Janet’s. She did as many stunts as she could, including the scene hanging out of the window during the storm. Vera Farmiga had her shining moments in the beginning of the film, while Patrick Wilson exposed his skill in the final scenes. Farmiga succeeds in all of her dramatic crazy roles, her
eyes vividly showing her fear and emotion. Wilson, on the other hand, portrays his character verbally and through body language. Ed Warren’s intense concern for the family and Janet is shown in one of the final scenes where he saves the possessed girl. “The Conjuring 2” may have similarities to its predecessor, but it is a phenomenal horror film that feels familiar in exceptional ways. The movie incorporates humor and romance, but never fully leaves the tension and terror. The movie hints at a third installment for the demonic series. With director James Wan and the wonderful cast of Farmiga and Wilson, the storyline is set up for continued success.
Why ‘Don’t Breathe’ Is A Breath of Fresh Air
Robert Younger Contributing Writer
Sad as it may be, the summer of 2016 was not a particularly good time for movies. From lackluster films to outright critical and financial bombs, summer '16 has quickly become what some have started to call one of the worst movie summers in recent memory. That is why, coming in at the very tail end of the summer, director Fede Alvarez’s film “Don’t Breathe” is ironically a breath of fresh air. A horror film in which instead of a monster or some lunatic, the “killer”
portrayed is a blind war veteran defending himself from intruders. The film follows three delinquent teens who make a living burglarizing the homes of people via a master key to their security systems. Things quickly take a hopeful turn for the three as Money (Daniel Zovatto) catches word of their biggest target yet: a man supposedly in possession of several hundred thousand dollars. The best part? He’s blind. Theoretically, if they’re quiet enough, the three can just walk in and rob him with no concern. Initially, Alex (Dylan Minnette) has no interest in stealing money from the Blind Man (Stephen Lang).
The Mace & Crown
However, at the behest of his friend Rocky (Jane Levy) who simply wants to make a new life for herself and her sister, he agrees. After doing some quick scouting of the area and their target’s habits, the three make their way into his house. There, things quickly go downhill as the Blind Man finds out he’s not alone and proceeds to turn the tables on them, swiftly locking them in as he slowly tries to find the strangers hiding in his home. By far, the film’s greatest asset is just how believably terrifying a villain they make out of the Blind Man. As a war veteran, he is just the sort of person a viewer could believably
@maceandcrown
imagine having both the skills and the paranoia to trap and hunt down anything he deems a threat. Yet, he is not without sympathy, as are the main characters who are clearly just teens who are in over their head. As the film progresses, it becomes increasingly clear that there is more than meets the eye. Things very quickly take a turn for the dark and sinister as the teens begin to unravel more aspects of the Blind Man’s life. The fact that the film’s killer is blind is used to great effect throughout the film, constantly building terror and suspense. Not to mention it creates an interesting take on the classic horror trope of the killer being unable to
@maceandcrown
find you if you don’t make a sound. Stephen Lang really sells the role of this blind veteran – a man who is just off-key enough to be a monster in his own right – while still remaining at least somewhat sympathetic. An excellent film, “Don’t Breathe” is a wonderful way to close the summer and a great warm-up for the Halloween season. Thrilling, suspenseful and outright disturbing, it is a must see for anyone looking for a good scare. “Don’t Breathe” is in theaters now.

Banks & Steelz: A Much Needed Collaboration Jon Affolter Jr. Contributing Writer
Banks & Steelz: two new names, but two not so new faces. Banks, A.K.A. Paul Julian Banks, is best known for his work with the indie rock band Interpol, with hits such as “Obstacle 1,” “Slow Hands” and “All The Rage Back Home.” He has hit success once again on his well-thoughtout collaboration with none other than the founding member of the Wu-Tang Clan, RZA, who has now
adopted the personna Bobby Steelz for his newest project with Banks. The album is on point, from its WuTangesque lyrics that Steelz has been showering us with for decades, to its funky percussion and catchy guitar riffs that are accompanied by electropop melodies. “Anything But Words” stands alone as a refreshing release. Where Banks lacks in lyrical delivery compared to Steelz, he makes up for in his obvious compositional influence. The two artists complement each other well, and this album leaves
The Mace & Crown
listeners with the feeling that they are on to something fresh. Steelz, who is well-known for his lyrical wizardry and his reputation to “drop knowledge,” fires lyrics ranging from environmental problems and GMO’s, to relationships and love, to spirituality and economic failures; he has always been an artist of moral substance. Steelz’s lyrics partnered with Banks’ baritone-like hooks manage to complement each other nicely in their genre-bending compositions.
@maceandcrown
One track clearly making its mark is “Conceal.” A gritty, old-school sound with a mellow feel, the song is infused with horns and a simple yet funky bass line, followed by a dramatic solo fade-away. It is a poetic excursion, with lyrics such as, “I’m in a clear view, closer I appear like images inside your rearview.” Collaborations on the album include other members of the WuTang Clan, namely Ghostface Killah, Method Man and Masta Killa, as well as Florence Welch of Florence & The
@maceandcrown
Machine, and Kool Keith, another long-time veteran in the rap game. “Anything But Words” is fitting to all ages. For lovers of progressive music in general, this album is a must hear. If you grew up listening to both rock and hip-hop music, the tracks on Banks & Steelz’s debut album are worth a listen. Though there have been artists who have meshed rock and rap before this album, this release is altogether new and exciting.

Blink-182 Assures that Punk Rock Isn’t Dead with ‘California’ Brooke Nicholson Contributing Writer
In the ‘90s, Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge and Scott Raynor (later replaced by Travis Barker) of Blink-182 began redefining the punk-rock scene with the release of their first album, “Buddha.” Blink’s music career peaked from 1999-2003, with albums such as “Enema of the State,” “Take Off Your Pants and Jacket” and their self-titled album, “Blink-182.” Even though Blink-182 seemed to dominate the rock charts in the early 2000s, the trio undoubtedly began developing problems within the band from Travis narrowly escaping a deadly plane crash to the band going on “indefinite hiatus” in 2005 while Tom pursued new music possibilities.
In January 2016, the band ultimately called it quits; this time, Tom decided he wasn’t coming back. In March 2016, fans were surprised to hear that Alkaline Trio’s Matt Skiba had officially joined the Blink family, and had been writing songs and throwing ideas around with Mark and Travis. By July 2016, Blink-182 released their seventh album, “California,” their first studio album without founding band member, Tom DeLonge. The album debuted on iTunes overall and rock album charts at No. 1 impressively ending Drake’s nineweek chart-topping streak. The album begins with the short intro, “Cynical,” which sets the mood for the entire album in just under two minutes, shouting loud and clear that Blink-182 is back. The song opens
up with Mark’s very familiar, gentle voice that soon introduces Travis pounding away on the drums for a quick solo. While recording this song for the album, Travis abruptly stopped playing for a second, and you can hear him quickly screaming “ah!” in the background, believing he has messed up his part. Wanting to keep their humorous image, the band decided to keep in Travis’ outburst for the song. Before the 90 seconds end, Matt concludes the rest of the song with “What’s the point of saying sorry now? Not sorry, not sorry, not sorry, I’m not sorry now.” The track “Bored to Death” gives fans a nostalgic flashback to the old Blink they used to listen to in the parking lots of their high schools. Blink decided to take an alternate
route with this new album, refusing to go as hardcore punk as they used to with Tom. The change gives these songs a rhythmic, more pop-rock feel while still keeping their roots and wits about them. Songs like “Built this Pool” and “Brohemian Rhapsody” wittingly keeps the light humor throughout the album, with the lyrics “I wanna see some naked dudes / That’s why I built this pool,” being the only things said in the short seventeen-second song. “California” throws in a good mix of drum-pounding, guitar-amped songs that remind fans that Blink is still around, with slower, gentler songs such as “Home Is Such a Lonely Place” that let fans see just how much they’ve matured during their many years of fame. “California” beauti-
fully ends the album with a slow yet rhythmic homage to the band's place of origin. Blink-182 is currently touring the United States with DJ Spider, All Time Low and A Day To Remember, promoting “California” as well as pleasing and surprising fans by performing their most popular songs from way-back-when. They recently ignited the Virginia United Home Loans Amphitheatre in Virginia Beach on Aug. 16, performing for a nearly sold-out crowd. “California” tells the tale of a band that has made it through the most difficult times, and has proven that a band can turn around from almost being wiped out from the music scene to coming back better and badder than ever.
Monarch Style: New York Fashion Week Recap Kim Bering Staff Writer
Couture can be another level of fashion entirely. The runways are filled with supermodels flaunting outlandish designer pieces that would never be seen in a local shopping center. Quite a few brands from this year’s New York Fashion Week presented some wild pieces that are far too crazy to wear. So why do high quality fashion brands produce expensive clothing that is too eccentric to even wear on the street? Couture can otherwise be known as high quality fashion. It is seldom seen off the runway, partially because of the extreme prices and sometimes the eccentricity of the designs. Those
who can afford it have to be brave enough to wear such daring looks. Whether the collection is ready-towear or not, many trendy looks during this season’s NYFW were much too frivolous. Designer Sanchez Kane’s collection, VFiles, is a prime example of this. He dressed his models in outrageous patterns, pillows, umbrellas, plastics and graphic baggy T-shirts. Maybe a select piece off of each look would be acceptable to wear, but a pillow or umbrella for a hat is highly impractical. Although Kane’s looks were undoubtedly creative, it was strictly runway fashion. Many brands will always design a drastic and creative collection. DNKY dressed their models in sheer
The Mace & Crown
pastel capes while Jeremy Scott featured some of his looks around hot pink sequin dresses with a wide spaceship-like hem. Designer brands are known for their odd clothing that is seen on the runway. It is peculiar, but it is also to be admired. Most couture brands produce crazy and unwearable pieces, but that is part of the talent and artistry in couture fashion. It is fun to look at the runway designs, but not always wear them. The trends that are worn and seen in local stores are bounced off of these designers’ ideas. Though they are toned down compared to the runway looks, shoppers have these designers to thank for trending styles. A few commonly seen trends on NYFW runways were loud neon col-
@maceandcrown
ors, intricate floral detailing and a vast amount of patterns and grunge street looks. However, all of these looks were seen both on and off the runway while on the streets of New York City by designers and models alike. Designers are channeling their inner grunge to fuel the oncoming season with inspiration. Street style trends at NYFW were fairly similar to the runway looks. The ‘90s and even early 2000s are making a comeback. The ‘90s grunge is working its way into the eclectic statement pieces seen by fashion icons. Bright color blocking, plaid, mom jeans, platform sneakers and metallics are flooding the streets this season. It is socially acceptable to wear T-shirts under dresses and tuck tops into
@maceandcrown
mom jeans again. It is safe to say that holding onto your vintage pieces is a smart idea, because you never know when those pieces will be circulated into couture fashion again. Although the street style looks are a little less quirky than those on the runway, they remain to be on the forefront of high fashion. Both on and off the runway, eccentric looks are inspirational to generate our own version of high fashion. We have daring designers to thank for breaking barriers and defying fashion rules. Although the runway looks are sometimes too impractical for everyday wear, they motivate trends for us to replicate in our own personal way.

The Head and the Heart ‘Signs of the Light'
Courtesy of Sub Pop Records
On their third album, the Head and the Heart explore the pop side of music. Traditionally known for their indie-folk sound, the band has now adopted a more mainstream radio sound in “Signs of Light.” After years of taking separate paths, the six members regrouped last summer to write and record. Following a summer of surfing in the California sun, “Signs of Light” was born. With lead track “All We Ever Knew” bringing a Mumford and Sons vibe to the album, the Head and the Heart introduce a rock sound to their
newest release. The song features a sing-along chorus and is the perfect vibe for late night car rides. Other songs like “Rhythm and Blues” and “Colors” have an upbeat pop feel, but give the listener a sense of nostalgia. Beneath the electric guitars and general pop feel of “Signs of Light,” the rustic basis that defines the Head and the Heart shines through. “Library Magic” reminds listeners of the roots of the band, taking the listener through a personal story of love and life. The closing and title track of the
album, “Signs of Light,” takes on a morose feel, where lead singer Jonathan Russell sings a tragic story about missing someone and wondering if that same person is missing him. The song also features themes of self redemption and recovery. While the Head and the Heart have broadened their horizons and strayed from their indie roots, the band has proven themselves with this raw and open album. They put their faith in their talent, tried something new and made something great.
M.I.A. ‘AIM'
Following her 2013 release “Matangi,” Maya Arulpragasam, better known as M.I.A., has brought back an album full of confusing synthetic beats masked by confident words. With the non-abrasive tone of the album, “AIM” is an easy-going listen until the listener dives deeper into the tone of the lyrics. M.I.A. keeps her vocals at the forefront of the album. They’re the focal point, with the music to only push and support her words. In typical M.I.A. style, she sticks with an album that is politically motivated. The album's
lead track, “Borders,” hears her belting out messages of freedom privilege, saying “what’s up with that?” From there, M.I.A. continues on about her own personal experiences with culture and self worth. The music on “AIM” boasts heavy beats, and also introduces Indian culture in tracks like “Ali r u ok?” Even with the eccentric idiosyncrasies in her music, it stays low key, relying heavily on lyrics like, “At the border I see the patroller cruising past in their car, hiding in my Toyota Corolla.” The compilation features former
One Direction member, ZAYN, on the track “Freedun,” and Dexta Daps on “Foreign Friend.” Both tracks keep the same consistent beat the rest of the album carries. M.I.A. croons about self preservation and not caring what others think. M.I.A. defines her bold and unique style. In “AIM” she’s released a solid album, but it’s simple and quiet. There’s nothing that makes it uniquely M.I.A. The lyrics go back and forth, almost like she can’t decide on how she wants the listener to perceive her music. Courtesy of Interscope Records

A Day to Remember has reconnected with their metal roots on their latest album, “Bad Vibrations.” Their explosive sixth full-length album takes the listener through an honest journey. Straying away from the more mainstream sound with “Common Courtesy,” A Day to Remember has rediscovered the love of the early 2000s punk scene. Between the screaming and the heavy drum beat with loud electric guitars, the album is built for angry people who need to be angry with someone else. The opening eponymous track
@maceandcrown
comes out of the gate swinging. Lead singer, Jeremy McKinnon, starts off strong, screaming his way through three minutes of pain and self-doubt. The album doesn’t lighten up from there. “Paranoia” is anxiety-inducing and keeps up with the general feeling of uncertainty. Lyrics like “It's got me scared, scared of the unknown, unknown numbers been blowing up my phone” and “no more love, no more resolution,” maintain the overall dark themes of the album. “Naivety” is a nostalgic track, which touches more of A Day to Remember’s punk side and is one of the
@maceandcrown
less hardcore tracks off the album. One of the closing tracks, “Forgive and Forget,” starts seemingly somber, but quickly evolves into a punk rock underdog anthem about being let down and having low expectations. “Bad Vibrations” provides a good middle ground between punk rock and metal. It starts out as classic hardcore, and then transforms into something more slow and mainstream. "A Day to Remember" has shown that even if they stray from the original sound, they have no problem reeling back to their roots, and they still make it sound good.

‘Ava’s Possessions’ 2015 | R | 89 min.
In the aftermath of her demonic possession, Ava (Louisa Krause) finds her life in shambles. Ava’s boyfriend, friends and family have all distanced themselves for fear over everything she has done. If that wasn’t bad enough, she also faces charges for numerous crimes she has no memory of. In order to avoid jail time, Ava agrees to attend a support group for people who have also been through demonic possession. Part of the therapy dictates that Ava is to piece together the events of her
possession in order to make amends to the people she hurt. In doing this, Ava will conquer her demonic entity as it tries to regain control over her. As Ava begins to fill the gaps in her memory, she starts to understand how she initially came to be possessed. While writer and director Jordan Galland brings an interesting B-movie style to this dark horror comedy, it seems like he tries to do too much with the plot he presents. Many of the scenes involving the support group Ava attends have enough energy and
imagination to make “Ava’s Possessions” worth watching. However, Galland’s attempts to introduce more plot threads make the movie disorienting. The strengths of the film rest on both Galland’s inspired direction and the performance of Louisa Krause, who has a great ability to present many of Galland’s hit-and-miss jokes with a charming deadpan style. Unfortunately, the plot of “Ava’s Possessions” bares too many plot threads that ultimately weigh the film down. This film is available on Netflix.

Louis (George Sample) is trying to do right by his family, which includes working a steady job and spending more time at home with his live-in girlfriend and their daughter. In order to keep himself focused on his responsibilities, Louis has to start gradually distancing himself from his trouble-making childhood friend Jack (Zurich Buckner). Tensions begin to flare when Louis begins to spend more time with his coworker, Andrew (Brian Kowalski), which is something that Jack doesn’t take too kindly to. As Louis, Jack and Andrew spend the day hanging out in
their small hometown, they get into misadventures that Jack orchestrates in order to intimidate Andrew away from Louis. Will Jack’s schemes be successful, or will he have to come to terms with the state of his bond with Louis? First-time director Michael Larnell’s observation on growing up, male friendships and the platonic affection that encompasses those friendships certainly proves to be an effective and moving one. Framed as a documentary, Larnell allows the actors to stretch their muscles as actors and really explore their char-
acters that seldom get to articulate their inner frustrations throughout the narrative. While Larnell’s voice in storytelling gets to shine throughout, his direction leaves much to the imagination. This isn’t to say that his choices as a director are wrong, but Larnell ends up borrowing too much of the style of his mentor and executive producer of “Cronies,” Spike Lee. Nevertheless, the solid performances and attention-grabbing story makes “Cronies” a decent watch. This film is available on Netflix.
‘Manson Family Vacation’ 2015 | Unrated | 84 min.
This oddly titled film centers on two estranged brothers who could not be any more different from each other. One brother, Nick (Jay Duplass), has seen success as both an accomplished lawyer and as a family man. Meanwhile, the other brother, Conrad (Linas Phillips), has spent his adult life as a death-obsessed drifter after being deemed the black sheep of his family. When Conrad decides to visit Nick and his family in Los Angeles, he wants to take Nick on a tour through the city that’s centered on the crux
of his obsession of death: Charles Manson. Nick, desperately wanting to mend their broken relationship, decides to humor Conrad and embark on this adventure with him. What follows is an offbeat odyssey through Los Angeles and the California desert that will test and redefine Nick and Conrad’s relationship. With a title such as “Manson Family Vacation,” it’s hard to picture this movie as being anything but dark and twisted. However, the film surprises viewers by boasting a shockingly heartwarming story about family and
The Mace & Crown
accepting the flaws of the ones you love. This is mainly accomplished by the natural chemistry between Duplass and Phillips, whom are both incredibly likable in this movie. The third act of the movie takes the story in a direction that can be a little hard to digest, which might damper the movie a bit for some people. Still, “Manson Family Vacation” proves to be a unique and even charming take on family. This film is available on Netflix. Courtesy 40 Logolight Entertainment

Slow Start Dooms Monarchs Harry Howard Jr. Sports Editor
For the second straight week, Old Dominion (1-2) started slow, falling to North Carolina State (2-1) 49-22. Playing in front of a crowd of 57,810, the largest crowd the ODU football team has ever played in front of, the monarchs were dominated. With the loss, Old Dominion is now 0-7 against Power 5 schools and O-3 against NC State. NC States offense was clicking on all cylinders and they shut down Ray Lawry. Lawry
had one the worst games of his career, rushing the ball nine times for just 14 yards. Ryan Finley, the Wolfpack's quarterback, completed 24 of 28 passes for 281 yards, and three touchdowns before going to the bench early in the fourth quarter. Finley torched the Monarchs through the air and his teammates pounded them on the ground rushing for 158 yards as a team. Coach Wilder said on Finley's play, "I thought he was a star tonight. There were times when we were in really good coverage
and he just put the ball in good spots.” At halftime, ODU trailed 21-3, but they came out determined to come back. On the Wolfpack's first drive of the half, the Monarchs stopped them and then scored with a 21-yard touchdown pass from David Washington to Zach Pascal, boosting the score to 21-9. NC State quickly took back control of the game, scoring on their next two possessions to build the lead to 35-9. Washington had a solid game completing 16 of 26 passes for
200 yards and two touchdowns. Jeremy Cox was the most productive player for the Monarchs offense, rushing the ball nine times for 91 yards and one touchdown. Next up for ODU is TexasSan Antonio for homecoming weekend. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcasted on the American Sports Network. It’s the Monarchs first conference game of the season and a must-win if they want to reach six wins to secure a bowl bid.
NCAA Pulls Events Because of HB2 Law Alex Brooks Contributing Writer
Another huge player in the sports world has backed out of North Carolina. In late July, the NBA decided to back their All-Star weekend out of Charlotte due to the HB2 bill being passed. The city of Charlotte will now be missing out on an estimated $100 million. In March, the state of North Carolina voted on a bill to reverse the Charlotte ordinance that extended rights to gay or transgender people, which is discriminating against a group of people. Since then, everyone has had an opinion on the matter, and a lot of big money making ventures have backed out of the city and state altogether. On Sept. 12, the decision came down that the NCAA will relocate all of the seven championship events that North Carolina was awarded earlier in the year. The ACC has also
The Mace & Crown
jumped on board and decided to make every neutral site game out of North Carolina, which means the ACC Championship on Dec. 3, that was slated to be played in Charlotte, will no longer be there. Now the HB2 has not only effected the lives gay or transgender people in the state, but it has now started to effect the economy. It can only be speculated how much money any of the NCAA games would have brought to the Queen City. This HB2 controversy is another example of how sports are bigger than just a game. Indeed, there are grown men and women who go out and play a game in front of people for a living, but it is also a bigger platform. Sports bring so much revenue and attention to wherever the sport is at that doing something this massive, like pulling games out of a state, has an impact on people. People like to think there
@maceandcrown
is no mix between sports and politics, but sports and politics go hand in hand, and this is another example of how sports could change the direction of a state’s voting outcome. It is up to the residents in North Carolina to change back the reversal and establish what
@maceandcrown
is right and what is wrong. The NBA, NCAA and ACC can all pull out, but they cannot reverse the wrong doing that is happening. Only time will tell, but hopefully these powerful sports organizations will be able to sway residents.

Head Coach Andrew Griffiths was very proud of his team post game, despite the end result. “We have made a lot of progress in a short period of time with a young group. Connecticut is a very good team with a lot of talent,” he said. Griffiths saw a lot of grit from his team and the way they fought back has him feeling very confident going forward. “Watching that game I thought we were first to the ball and winning the fifty-fifty battles which is very encouraging,” he said. UConn, being on the road wasted no time in starting up their offense. Anna Middendorf converted the first penalty
corner of the game with a goal in just the third minute of the match. The Lady Monarchs had trouble generating scoring chances in the first frame. UConn held ODU without a shot for the first 25 minutes of play. However, after getting the ball on goal twice in the last few minutes, ODU controlled the ball and set the tempo going into the half. “We got confident passing the ball at the end of the half. There were points where we got away from that. A little too much dribbling. A bigger focus on individual play,” Griffiths said. Lock down defense was the story of the second half on both sides. Only six shots were registered between the two teams neither refusing to give an inch. ODU goalkeeper Kealsie Robles gave her team some late momentum by making a very nice leg save to keep the Monarchs in the game. The 1-0 lead would hold up until the 63rd minute of play. ODU was able to get backto-back penalty corners and on the second, freshman Erin
Huffman capitalized on her opportunity. UConn defenders broke up the play but freshman Marlee Mclendon was able to move the ball to Huffman. Huffman connected on the ball and found the back of the net for the fourth time this season. The goal tied the game at one and sent Monarch fans into a frenzy. “It's very exciting for her. She is a natural finisher, a true goal scorer. I like the ball on her stick when the pressure is on,” Griffiths said. This year's group is a very
young one and Griffiths stressed the importance of his team enjoying themselves out there. Especially at home. “I told them before the game enjoy these moments. These are what you are going to remember and that was a great one,” Griffiths said. The celebration for the young team was short lived. With just 26 seconds remaining, UConn was awarded back to back penalty corners. They had generated most of their chances off corners. In the second corner, Anna Middendorf found the net

again and sealed the 2-1 victory. The Lady Monarchs showed promise at the end of the game and Griffiths is very confident they are only going to improve. While they are young they are eager to move forward. “We are really focused on just improving as a group and trusting each other. There is a growing confidence to this team and it's only going to build on itself. When it does, I think we can beat anyone,” Griffiths said.

Other standout players from the game were Jesse Miralrio and Jimmy Filerman. Miralrio had four shots on target, one shot on goal, and he played for the entirety of the game thus rendering him the Man of the Match. Miralrio said, "I'm not happy with having the best

Filerman managed to shine with fancy footwork and his continuous readiness to score. When asked how he felt about his individual performance during the game he said, "I would like to get on the ball more and get open for the my teammates more."

The Monarchs ended the night with eight shots and three yellow cards, while the 49ers had 13 shots and one yellow card. Old Dominion will hit the road on Sept. 20 to face off against VCU for their first away game. ODU and VCU have had a long standing rivalry with one another, meaning the pressure is on for Tuesday.

US Judges Rule Differently on FBI Hacking, Warrant Audra Reigle Staff Writer With technology becoming more prominent in crimes, the question of whether or not a warrant is needed to send viruses into a suspect’s computer for information is asked by law making officials. It is a controversial topic that judges across the U.S. are addressing. The court case that sparked this debate was the U.S. v. Jeffery Jerry Torres. Court documents state that Torres was in possession of child abuse materials obtained from a website on the Tor anonymity network. This network, also known as the "Onion Router,” was only accessible to those who had installed the free, publicly available software from the Tor network. When on this network,

the user’s actual IP address is not displayed. Instead, it goes through a series of channels, and the site stores the IP of the last channel the user went through. A Texas judge ruled that officials using malware called a Network Investigative Technique (NIT) to hack into suspects’ computers to get information would need a warrant, according to Vice's technology channel "Motherboard." On the other hand, a Virginia judge does not believe officials need a warrant to hack into computers for information, saying that defendants have, “no reasonable expectation[s] of privacy in [their] computer,” when hacked with government malware. The Tor anonymity network, which is at the center of this case, hides IP addresses, but some judges say that people should have

no expectation that their IP address will actually be private. The issue is whether or not the FBI should have the right to hack into computers even when the location is obscure. As a result of all of this, a new set of rules are being developed. According to Wired, these rules will allow the FBI to hack into computers with malware. This would all be done in secret, and the computers being hacked could be those of the innocent or those that have committed crimes. A warrant would still be needed for this to happen. If Congress can't block the proposal for this by Dec. 1, it will go into effect. This proposal could cause many dangers. If the malware gets into your personal computer or phone and causes it to crash, the data on it would be lost, but that would only be an in-

convenience compared to what could happen if that same malware got onto a hospital computer and crashed it. With everything moving into a digital age, doctors wouldn’t be able to access the information they need to help patients, possibly causing a loss of life that could have been avoided. The public knows little about what the government intends to do with the hacking tools they possess. These tools would also have their weaknesses. They could become vulnerable to unauthorized parties, like the FBI’s DCS 3000, a digital wiretapping tool once known as Carnivore. It is also possible that the FBI will not take the precautions to properly test their hacking tools before making use of them.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Recalled Due to Risk of Exploding Lyric Jones Contributing Writer Samsung’s newly released Galaxy Note 7 smartphone has experienced a rash of bursting into flames or exploding, which has elicited action from Samsung. Specifically, the battery of the new Note 7 is at risk of exploding. A Jeep in St. Petersburg, Fla. found out firsthand when it was set on fire when a Note 7 exploded while it was charging inside the vehicle. The cause of the Jeep fire, and at least 91 other reported incidents, originate with the Note 7’s lithium ion batteries. Lithium batteries are recharge-
able batteries commonly built directly into smart devices. Similar to how normal batteries have a positive and negative side, lithium batteries have an anode (negative) and cathode (positive). There is a separator inside the lithium battery that keeps the anode and cathode from touching. If these opposite sides touched, it may result in an unnatural explosion. One of the few reasons this circumstance may occur is during the charging process, where overheating might catalyze an explosion. This is why a phone will display a warning if it is getting close to overheating. Minuscule errors made during the manufacturing process might be the most
prominent reason for these recent mishaps, which allows the opposite ends to touch. The Note 7’s random combustions are most likely due to this faulty manufacturing. Samsung reportedly recalled 2.5 million Note 7’s due to these unexpected happenings. Globally there have been 92 phones that have overheated and broke. Owners of this model of phone have been advised to switch their phones off and exchange it. There is talk that Samsung will be exchanging customers’ phones with newer and safer Note 7’s later this month. The new Samsung Galaxy Note 7 will clearly denote that it is safe with a round sticker that will
have a blue capital 'S' on it. It will also have a small black box on the bottom almost directly under the 'S.' Samsung will also be launching a database that will allow customers to check and see if their phone is from the safe batch or not. Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7’s exploding are going to do some noteworthy damage on their revenue, which is exacerbated by reports of Galaxy Core Prime exploding in a young boy’s hands in Brooklyn, NY. Although this might be a negative for Samsung, it is definitely a positive for Apple. Once more people start catching word of Samsung’s shoddy manufacturing, this might
lead them to distrust the company as a whole. While Apple products have their issues, they're nothing compared to a phone bursting into flames while charging. This should serve as a warning, and the advisories sent out by Samsung should be taken seriously by all. Before enjoying the new Samsung Galaxy Note 7, check if it is faulty or if it is denoted to be a safe device. As of Sept. 15, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued an official recall notice of all Note 7's sold prior to the recall date.

Comparing the Next Half-Generation of Game Consoles Robert Williams Contributing Writer With only three years having passed since the PlayStation 4 was first released, a new system has been announced; The PS4 Pro is slated for release on Nov. 10. Even though the PS4 Pro has been hyped to help solidify Sony’s lead in the console war, many competitors are claiming they can outperform the system. Microsoft’s new console, the Xbox One S, will be released Oct. 13, a month before the PS4 Pro. This would not be such a big problem if the technical specifications and price for PS4 Pro were more compelling than Xbox One S. A notable shortcoming of the PS4 Pro is the lack of an Ultra HD Blu-ray
player. For the PS2 and PS3 one of the biggest selling points for non-gamers and gamers alike was the fact that it doubled as a DVD and Blu-Ray players, respectively. The PS4 Pro is not able to play UHD Blu-Rays, the latest format for videos. This is problematic because the Xbox One S can. Consumers looking to save space on their home entertainment shelf would appreciate such an addition, especially for the casual gamer. 4K Streaming media will be available for both systems from services such as Netflix and YouTube. Both the PS4 Pro and Xbox One S can play video games at 4K resolution. The two systems are not powerful enough to display 4K gaming naturally, but they are able to imitate a display close to 4K. The difference
between the consoles is how well and how often it can display 4K visuals. The PS4 Pro locks its games at 30 frames per second to help it run closer to 4K. This makes the system able to run at a higher graphical resolution even on standard HD 1080p televisions. The Xbox One S upscales the resolution depending on the TV being used. If you plug the system into a 4K TV, it is going to upscale the picture to 4K. Some games will make graphical concessions on the Xbox One S to keep the framerate locked at 60 FPS. If you are using a 1080p HD TV the graphics will scale
up, but not in a noticeable fashion. The differences in specs would not be an issue if the prices were comparable. The PS4 Pro’s standard price is $399 while the Xbox One S starts at $299. With such a price difference, parents and budget spenders will probably gravitate toward the cheaper system, especially when the cheaper system seems to have more benefits. If money is not an issue the Xbox One S has a $399 model with 2TB of space. The PS4 Pro only has 1TB for the same price. These are only the consoles coming out this year. Nintendo’s rumored
new console, the NX, will be released in early 2017. The possibilities of the NX seem to be unimaginable with rumors of console gameplay with the ability to go mobile, as well as graphics and processing power that are on par with the PS4 and PS4 Pro. Microsoft also announced another console to be released in Nov. 2017. “Project Scorpio” seems to be in a league of its own in terms of console gaming. "Project Scorpio" will supposedly have the processing power and graphic fidelity of a gaming PC, which is practically unheard of when it comes to console gaming.
