Broderick Dining Commons Unveiled

Sarah Miller

Contributing Writer President Broderick challenged Old Dominion University students to embrace the diversity that ODU embodies by eating with new students in the architecturally innovative Broderick Dining Commons. On Sept. 23, the Monarch community gathered outside the recently designed Kate and John R. Broderick Dining Commons for the dedication and presentation of the new facility. Current students, alumnae and ODU personnel were on hand to mark the occasion. The front of the building was unveiled at the end of the ceremony, with lettering displayed in ODU colors of blue and silver and crested with the Monarch crown. The interior boasts 550 cushioned seats with two outdoor patios encompassed in black metal gates with emergency exits leading out of the venue. There are three entrances into the dining commons. Meals will be served beginning Oct. 12. David Harnage spoke on the construction of the commons, introducing the individual members of the various teams and companies.

Harnage complemented them on the hard work of completing the design and construction of the facilities. Samantha Conyers, former leader of ODU’s chapter of NAACP, lead the student comments, remarks and expressions of gratitude during the ceremony. She reflected on how sociable President Broderick is and how “rare it is” to have a president of a university be available to students. Petra Szonyegi of the Student Representative to the Board of Visitors spoke of how ODU is one of the most diverse campuses in the state, which enhances the learning environment and how changes have been made to the living area to accommodate “gender inclusive housing.” A video presentation was shown on two screens, which highlighted student commentary and praise for the Brodericks. Rachel Edmonds, Student Government President, and Chris Ndiritu, former Student Government President, presented President and First Lady Broderick with the Presentation of Resolution, which passed at the last Student Government meeting, to name the new dining hall for John R. and Kathleen E. Broderick. Edmonds spoke on the accomplishments of the president during his tenure as presi-

dent of ODU from 2008 until 2016. The president and first lady closed the ceremony with heartfelt thoughts and comments. The dining facility has a cobblestone walkway which is accommodating to all students. There are large glass windows throughout the building and six small fountain spouts decorate the entranceway. Upon entering, there is a lounge area, and two television consoles are visible from the entrance. Students can go to the right or left to dine. Towards the front of the space, there is a countertop with stools where about five students can sit. In the back of the room is an image of the school mascot, Big Blue. Max, a current student at ODU, commented that the new dining facility is “a lot nicer and more upscale” than any other dining commons ODU has had. Alumna Antoinette Bowser, class of 1985, attended the dining commons ceremony as part of the Homecoming Weekend and Alumni Gathering. She was very impressed with how the campus has been renovated since her time attending as a student. When asked about her reaction to the new dining facility she remarked,”Drastic, substantial changes! All we had was Webb Center. Webb was where

He is a member of the Golden Key International Honor’s Society, Project Management Institute, Global Monarchs club (GMC) and served on the Executive Board as director of academics and secretary for three semesters. He is an executive board member of the International Student’s Advisory Board, the American Society of Engineering Management Students chapter and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers chapter. He received an award for Monarch’s LEAD leadership program.

Stanekzai is also involved in the community outside of ODU. He has participated in events hosted by the Global Student Friendship Organization, volunteered at food drives and served food to the homeless. Though he has felt homesick at certain points, his experience in the U.S. and at ODU has been wonderful. He has made many friends from all over the world. Stanekzai’s experience at ODU has taught him that there is so much to learn and experience. When asked what words of wisdom he has to offer to the ODU community, Stanekzai said that he would recommend that they dream big, believe in themselves, be courageous to pursue their dream and to never be ashamed of failures.

New 'Rent Ready' Program for Students

Erin Sudek Staff Writer

The Rent Ready Norfolk program is a new resource for ODU students and other community members that educates and aids renters and landowners about renting homes and becoming part of a neighborhood community. This program was launched in November 2015 by the Dept. of Neighborhood Development and is aimed to insure quality housing, increase viable residential renters and to partner with property managers and landlords to create vibrant communities in Norfolk. Rent Ready Norfolk is especially important to ODU because of the amount of off-campus housing in the area, which include Lambert’s

Point, Highland Park, Edgewater Park Place and Larchmont. There are over 13,000 residential properties and 57% of them are rentals, according to the Department of Neighborhood Development in Norfolk. Many students are new to renting a home and know little about the process and responsibilities that come with a lease. If a student has a problem with a current lease, it could affect their ability to rent again in the future. There are four main components to this program: the Quality Assessments of homes, the Rental Academy, the Emergency Notification Database, and the Good Neighbor Campaign. Quality Assessments of homes will be offered as an online source for potential renters to use when looking for

a home. For landlords/property managers it can be used in order to market their property and make sure it is up to code plus some. An important note for property owners is that when seeking Rent Ready certification, the city does not wish to condemn homes in bad conditions, but rather partner with owners to improve the livability of the space. There are funds through the Rental Resource Bank for rehabbing properties if need be, as well as offering free marketing. The Rental Academy is a series of courses for new renters and landowners alike, which covers topics like how to attract renters, reading a lease, the roles of landlords and renters, how to take action when problems arise, and other essential information. The sessions are about an hour long and

New LGBTQ Mentorship Program Jacie Litz Contributing Writer The Office of Intercultural Relations has started a new LGBTQ Peer Mentor Program at ODU this fall. Ericka Smith, an Advocate and Ally Engagement Graduate Assistant, who is also a coordinator for the new program, discussed the program and the LGBT community at ODU. During the 2016 spring semester, students interested in becoming a mentor filled out a Google form for the program. “We asked them how they identify in terms of the acronym, pronouns, what is your experience as a mentor, what would you like to gain out of being a mentor, what skills would you bring, what issues do you think need to be discussed in regards to the community and a little bit about yourself in terms of personality,” Smith said. Once the forms were reviewed, potential mentors were also given an in-person interview. On Sept. 9, the first mentor training session was held. The ten selected mentors were given a manual, expectations, rules and the requirements to be fulfilled. “It was an integrative evening of what the program was go-

ing to look like since it is new and how [the mentors] can help us get it up and running successfully,” Smith said. According to Smith, some of the requirements of the mentors include meeting with the mentee at least once a month and encouraging attendance at ODU hosted cultural events. “We would like them to go to at least one Office of Intercultural Relations event. It does not have to be LGBT specific, but just something so that [mentors] are helping their mentee get kind of transitioned into that culture that ODU has to offer,” Smith said. The program had an overwhelming response for mentees this past month. With 22 applications for a mentee, there were not enough mentors to go around. However, Smith pointed out several other resources for students. Smith said, “I would direct them to the student organization ODU Out, because they are doing some fantastic things. I would also direct them to the Safe Space Committee. They do the Ally training, so they give the more educational side of the house to make sure people know there are resources and they are not alone, there are things they can do to be

The Mace & Crown

part of the community.” Smith also encouraged students, even if not part of the mentor program, to come by the Office of Intercultural Relations for LGBT programming and support. With October being LGBT history month, there will be plenty of activities and events to celebrate. When asked about the program’s overall goal, Smith said, “We basically wanted undergrads, particularly freshman, sophomores and transfer students who have not been able to be part of a culture that was accepting or embracing the LGBT student population to have a chance at that when they come here.” Smith believes the Monarch experience should be integrative and not just going to class. “So we want to see, hopefully, that there is a connection between all the aspects of campus culture that will make them [mentees] feel more comfortable in their identity, whichever that might be, and make friends and enjoy the process,” Smith said. The LGBTQ peer mentor program hopes to be successful this semester in helping recruit more mentors and mentees for the spring semester.

@maceandcrown

occur each month. “One day you will rent or own a home, or potentially be a property manager, and this is teaching you to be a part of the community. Things do happen, and you need to know what your rights and responsibilities are as a renter or owner,” Lauren Lowery said, who is management analyst for the Department of Neighborhood Development of the City of Norfolk. The Emergency Notification Database is a system that will allow for better communication between renters, landlords/property managers, police or anyone involved if there are any problems at or around the property. “Often when an emergency occurs, a renter doesn’t know how to get in contact with their landlord. This mechanism along with helping renters understand and read their lease

will help improve communication when an issue arises,” Lowery said. The Good Neighbor Campaign is working to create welcoming and friendly neighborhoods by partnering with civic leagues to bridge gaps between renters and homeowners, and rid the idea that renters do not add anything to a community. ODU students looking to utilize Rent Ready Norfolk can get involved and get educated through the Rental Academy and make sure to look for homes that are “rent ready.” Houses that will be considered “rent ready” are those which have had a quality assessment, a landlord that has gone through the Rental Academy and are also signed up for the Emergency Notification Database. This way, students and parents can be more secure in their lease.

As you read this article, perhaps you will be able to visualize the ramifications of each event as they occurred. In addition, you just might be able to imagine yourself at the scene and ponder on how the past affects our collective future as a species.

Governor’s Virginia Velocity Tour Visits Strome Entrepreneurial Center

T.J. Thompson Contributing Writer

Virginia Velocity Tour visited the campus of ODU at Strome Entrepreneurial Center Sept. 21 on a mission to recruit, celebrate and support Virginia startups. This five-city tour, complete with an eye-catching campaign bus, floated down Interstate 64 and into Strome’s parking lot. In Richmond the previous night, ODU alumnus Hamilton Perkins won the $25 thousand grant in the pitch competition reminiscent of television’s Shark Tank. Perkins pitched his designer handbags made from recycled plastic. The tour brought that Monarch momentum to Norfolk, disallowing heavy flooding to dampen the startup spirit.

In celebration of the day’s activities, director Nancy Grden and a team at Strome welcomed the crowd with a speed networking event. ODU President John Broderick’s remarks to the crowd were warm and inviting, embracing the can-do attitude. He stated he wishes to help keep innovative business ideas in the area. After President Broderick’s comments, Grden instructed attendees to break the ice with those around them. Josh Ebreo has utilized Strome’s services during his time at ODU, sharing about his app, Noteify, stating, “this center gives us a place for everyone to come and show what they’re working on.” Another startup idea shared was Student Veteran House, a social entrepreneurship idea for disabled

vets. Their mission is to provide studend veterans 100 percent accessible housing. Akeyla Reid, ODU alumnus and faculty member, said this experience “helped open my eyes to all the different facets of how Virginia’s economy is growing and I am really appreciative of that.” Grden gave credit to the success of the event to those attending, including the student and ODU alumni businesses. The Virginia Aquarium was the venue for the grand finale in Hampton Roads, and ODU freshman Michael Freeman was in attendance. “I am grateful to have Strome because it has introduced me to opportunities I would like to pursue upon graduation,” Freeman said. The final event of the evening was the pitch competition featur-

ing six different startups in science and biotechnology from across the Commonwealth. Adartis took home the prize money with their bio-pharmaceutical firm focused on improving animal health. Other pitchers included Attention Point, Cardinal Mechatronics, Go Go Band, Sanyal Biotechnology and Track Patch 1 Corporation. Track Patch, based in Norfolk, has utilized Strome as well as the Health and Sciences department on campus, developing their device to help loved ones and caretakers know when someone with Alzheimer’s has wandered off. Ending his pitch, CEO John Reese stated, “Other companies find them after they’re already lost. We don’t lose them!”

Larry Wilder, a member of Gov. McAuliffe’s office, cited the Ensminger Fellowships at ODU as capitalizing on the assets of a university and fostering the entrepreneur spirit as an exciting opportunity. Wilder’s excitement peaked when discussing the governor’s desire to see startups in Virginia. “First and foremost, he is an entrepreneur. If you were to talk to him about our economy, the first word out of his mouth would probably be ‘jobs’, the last word would be ‘jobs’ and every other word would be ‘jobs’. He’s walked the walk and now wishes to empower others to do what he has been able to do.” This conversation was a promising end to an amazing day of celebrating the startup spirit alive and well in Monarch Nation.

African-American History Museum Debuts in Nation’s Capital

Justin L.C. Ross Contributing Writer

A momentous day for historians and the U.S. as a whole began on Sept. 24 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. as the grand opening ceremony unveiled the National Museum of African American History and Culture. As reported by multiple news outlets, the museum has received an overwhelming amount of support from thousands of citizens and scholars. This support is evident in the vast amount of donations from various sources, both

from private and public collections, which tell the deep and rich history of African-American culture. A notable donation is, as reported by USA Today, the “Freedom Bell.” This is an incredible piece of American history, as this bell was used in the 1880s by the First Baptist Church of Williamsburg. This place of worship is one of the first churches in the nation constructed by the African-American community. As the website for the museum proudly notes, “A people’s journey, a nation’s story” and the vast collection of artifacts present the history, community and culture of a people,

a sense of wonder cannot be avoided. This collection brings together under one roof a proverbial treasure trove of historical artifacts that showcase the amazing journey of the AfricanAmerican people. A glimpse at these artifacts includes the freedom papers of those who strove to shake off the shackles of bondage, the literary masterpieces of W.E.B. Du Bois, and the original boombox used by the hip-hop group Public Enemy. Every inch of the building’s awe inspiring and beautiful architecture pays homage to the amazing history stored within its walls. As the

description notes on the museum’s website, lead designer David Adjaye strove for a multi-layered impact. “From one perspective, the building’s architecture follows classical Greco-Roman form in its use of base and shaft, topped by a capital or corona. In this case is inspired by the three-tiered crowns used in Yoruban art from West Africa,” Adjaye said. “Moreover, the building’s main entrance is a welcoming porch, which has architectural roots in Africa and throughout the African Diaspora, especially the American South and Caribbean."

This new addition to our nation’s capital has created a whirlwind of interest resulting in time passes being sold out through the month of October. However, time passes can be reserved for Nov. through Dec. on the museum's website. This longanticipated museum highlights the very fabric of our country and the spearhead of continued advancement of knowledge. As all those who venture to the capital will now witness firsthand, the ever expanding beauty of our collective history and culture, in one common country, is a movement that cannot be stopped.

Mapping Lambert’s Point Project Unveiled

Alex Scruggs Contributing Writer

The areas surrounding ODU has been housing residents and stories for over a century. “I didn’t swim so I didn’t try to swim but if you could swim we used to go to what you’d call the white pipe,” a contributor to mappinglambertspoint.org wrote. Established more than 100 years ago, the Lambert’s Point neighborhood in Norfolk is home to over 3000 residents. It lies within the boundaries of the 21st Street railroad tracks to the south, the Elizabeth River to

the west, Hampton Boulevard to the east, and ODU to the north. Dedicated to telling the stories of Lambert’s Point, Mapping Lambert's Point made its online debut Sept 20. On the website, you’ll find a map of the area with interactive points of interest detailing the stories and former business that have kept Lambert’s Point vibrant over the years. Both the city of Norfolk, and the state of Virginia seem to have a vested interest in Mapping Lambert’s Point. “The initial phase of the project was partially funded by a grant from the Virginia Foundation for the Hu-

manities and a gift from the Norfolk Southern Foundation as well as supported by the City of Norfolk and Old Dominion University,” according to the website. Mapping Lambert’s Point offers a look-in to what the area was like before Old Dominion took up such a significant amount of space. “The white pipe,” used to be a popular swimming and fishing spot for local residents from the '50s to the '70s, “down 49th Street all the way at the end of the street, there was a big pipe painted white. Summer Garden, formerly located on 42nd Street and Parker Avenue, “promised music and ‘innocent amusements’ with special attention given to ladies and children” in the early 1900s. The website is split up into four sections, including the main map, a description of the Mapping Lamberts Point project, a history of Lambert’s Point, and a page for submitting your own stories. Mapping Lambert’s Point thrives on the submission of stories from current and former residents, and according to the website, “No Story

is Too Small.” When posting stories, the website asks contributors to consider ideas such as their fondest or least fond memory of the area, how has the area influenced their life, and how the area served the community’s needs or changed its identity. Those with stories can share them online to help the Map Lambert’s Point project and “illuminate the meaningful encounters and lived experiences that have helped form a sense of place for folks who have grown up there, once called the neighborhood home, or continue to live there.”

The Witch is Back! Julia Creamer Contributing Writer

In 1994, three film students took a trip into the Black Hills Forest in Burkittsville, Maryland to film a documentary about the legendary Blair Witch. The three students never returned. Their cameras, sound equipment and part of their recorded footage were discovered a year later. The compilation of the students’ recordings became known as “The Blair Witch Project,” and was released to film in October of 1999. The greatest part about this film? There is no legend of the Blair Witch and the “found footage” isn’t real! The creators of “The Blair Witch Project,” Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, wrote a script that was so bare bones that it had no dialogue. The actors kept their real names and they shot the film using low-tech VHS cameras. Myrick and Sanchez felt that filming this way would make things more realistic and ultimately more frightening. As the actors in the film were asking if the Blair Witch legend was true, it caused the audience to ask the same.

The film crew decided to use the “shaky camera” technique in order to give a more realistic approach to the faux documentary. This camera technique would later become a mainstay in American cinema, and opened the door to many indie films that would’ve been overlooked in the past. “The Blair Witch Project” grossed approximately $248 million, created a successful franchise and would later become one of the most wildly successful independent/found footage horror films of all time. “Blair Witch,” the terrifying sequel to The Blair Witch Project, was released in theatres on Sept. 16. The film instilled a sense of nostalgia in fans of the first film and created a new wave of terror for younger audiences. The film is set 20 years after the “found footage” was recovered. James Donahue (James Allan McCune) receives a video from a local couple, Lane (Wes Robinson) and Talia (Valorie Curry), that shows that his older sister, Heather Donahue, may still be alive in the Black Hills. Lisa Arlington, an independent filmmaker played by Callie

Photo Courtesy of Indiewire.com Hernandez, wants to film James’ rescue mission. She brings a variety of expensive recording devices, including Bluetooth personal cameras and a remote controlled drone. James’ best friend Peter (Brandon Scott) and Peter’s girlfriend Ashley (Corbin Reid) also join James to help navigate through the treacherous woods and the horrors that lie within. “Blair Witch” is a worthy sequel to the original film, and it is made even better with today’s technology. The sound quality is far better, and

on its own creates several false scares. The camera resolution is perfect, and even though it is shot using the same techniques as the first film, it allows the audience to see more of the mayhem. There are also a few decent special effects and several gore-filled, cringe-worthy scenes. This film will put the audience on the edge of their seats and will leave them second-guessing that summer camping trip with friends.

The Lumineers Sell Out Richmond International Raceway

Lindsey Lanham Staff Writer

“Richmond, you’ve been one of the loudest crowds so far on this tour,” Lumineers frontman Wesley Schultz said to the sold-out crowd at Richmond International Raceway. Currently on tour with artists Rayland Baxter and BØRNS, the band made their appearance in Richmond on Sept. 16. Richmond International Raceway holds up to 7,000 people, and the sold-out crowd did not hold back as the band played songs new and old. Four years after the release of their first album, self-titled “The Lumineers,” the band’s tour is in support

The Mace & Crown

of their latest album “Cleopatra,” released back in April. The band is made up of Schultz, drummer/pianist Jeremiah Fraites and cellist/vocalist Neyla Pekarek. After the success of their songs “Stubborn Love” and “Ho Hey,” the band spent three years touring. Before recording “Cleopatra,” Schultz and Fraites took a retreat and wrote songs in the woods for six months. A big theme in their latest album is fame, and the goal for them was to not let their success go to their heads. Thus, “Cleopatra” was born. The Lumineers opened up the show with “Sleep on the Floor,” the opening track off of “Cleopatra.” The set then went through 22 songs in-

@maceandcrown

cluding “Dead Sea,” a performance that got the crowd cheering so loud Schultz had to stop just to say “thank you” to the audience. Singing and playing guitar, Schultz performed an emotional, solo tribute to his late uncle in “Charlie Boy.” It was a moment where no one was recording, no phones were out and the audience somehow understood what the song meant to Schultz. For three minutes, the crowd was just there, listening to a man play his guitar and singing. The band flew through their 75-minute-long set, playing songs from both albums. During “Classy Girls," Schultz and the band proceeded to run through the audience and

@maceandcrown

perform in the middle of the stadium. To close out the main set, Schultz dedicated “Long Way Home" to his father that died of cancer. By the end of the track, Schultz wasn’t the only one in tears. After a brief moment in between the main set and the encore, the band closed out the show with their hit “Stubborn Love," a loud sing-along. The Lumineers opened their arms up to the crowd and invited them to see what their songs meant. At the end of the night it was apparent that both the band and the crowd had a memorable experience that won’t be forgotten anytime soon.

Sway to the Beat with Gallant's 'Ology' Christian Walker Contributing Writer In a world that has become lost in trap beats and wobbling sound effects, there are still many artists that attempt to stay true to the roots of legendary genres. Alternative R&B artist Christopher Gallant (otherwise known as Gallant) is no exception. He has invited listeners on a tour through his emotional soul with his new album entitled “Ology” as a follow-up to his previous “Zebra” EP released back in 2014. “Ology” channels different sounds from ‘80s and ‘90s classic R&B, while still correlating a more relevant and modern electronic tune.

Gallant is a native of Columbia, Maryland where he participated in choir. His passion for singing led him to study music at New York University. Later moving to Los Angeles, Gallant met his manager, Jake Udell, and was signed to Mind of a Genius Records. In 2015, he toured with lyrical aficionado Sufjan Stevens on his North American leg of concerts. This earned him a major spotlight and recognition from music streaming company Spotify, naming him one of the breakout artists of 2016. His debut album couldn’t have been more perfectly titled since an

ology is the study of a subject. Gallant has been doing some studying trying to make the perfect album to attach his name to. Two years in the making, this work has truly been mastered to stay in line with this generation’s idea of what a “hit” is, while still having that relaxing nostalgic melody that previous generations can sway back and forth to. Deciding to play it safe, many of the songs on this album sound very familiar, yet so different. Listening to “Ology,” it’s very apparent that Gallant vocalizes more confidence in his art than his previous EP, for one can truly feel the emotional weight that his heart is

pouring out. It’s almost like listening to a verbal rendition of his personal journal, almost causing feelings of discomfort, but finding yourself relating to just about every word he’s chanting. In the songs “Talking to Myself” and “Shotgun,” he is opening up his vulnerable side of being hurt. With an amazing beat and ghostly hallows in the background, it comes close to making one feel guilty for moving their head and swaying to the beat. Another notable song is “Jupiter.” Gallant has scaled back on the electronic sound that was on his previous take of the song to show

more emotion and to push his vocals to the limit. The only other artist featured on this album is Jhene Aiko, lending her vocals on the track “Skipping Stones” that serve as the perfect cherry-on-top to the song. “Ology” is a pure example of the evolution of R&B in today’s culture being captured by the beauty of poetic lyrics. If this album had a visual, it would equate to watching a rose bud transitioning into full bloom on a nature documentary. Gallant’s latest work might take a few listens to warm up to, but is guaranteed to have you adding a few tracks to your favorites list.

Bastille Unleashes 'Wild World' Lindsey Lanham Staff Writer After three long years, Bastille has released their second album, “Wild World.” The band has come back stronger than ever with lyrics fueled by politics and grief, and music driven by harsh beats and a heavy electric guitar influence. “Wild World” shows that Bastille aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. Bastille made their first appearance with “Bad Blood” in 2013. After the success of their album and hit single “Pompeii,” Bastille went on to release many mix tapes and compilation albums.

The band is made up of four friends from London, including Dan Smith (vocals), Chris Wood (drums), Kyle Simmons (keyboard) and Will Farquarson (guitar and bass guitar). Smith started a solo project in 2010 but quickly formed a group with the others. “Wild World” was released on Sept. 9, proving that Bastille is still capable of writing and recording amazing music. After years of being away, Bastille needed to come back strong to re-establish themselves as a talented band, and with the new album they solidify what we already knew: Bastille are great songwriters.

The Mace & Crown

The album ranges from sounds that are borderline ‘90s R&B to ballads about lost love, each song having its own catchy chorus for the listener to sing along with. Smith’s melodious voice takes the listener through 14 tracks. “Wild World” starts off with eponymous track “Good Grief,” which at first sounds like a ‘90s pop-dance tune, yet Smith sings about funerals and longing. With an intro quote “So, what would you little maniacs like to do first,” taken from the 1985 movie “Weird Science,” the track embodies what the album is all about, which is throwback music mixed with contemporary lyrics and problems.

@maceandcrown

The album then goes on to the harsh sound of strings when “The Currents” starts up as the second track. It takes a step back from the bubbly sound of “Good Grief ” and brings on a more intense, in-your-face attitude of disbelief in regard to current politics. “The Currents” is jarring and honest, showing that Smith has something to say and he’s not holding back. The rest of “Wild World” goes through a whirlwind of emotions, including “Four Walls (The Ballad of Perry Smith),” which is a track dedicated to one of the men convicted of murdering the Clutter family in Kansas.

@maceandcrown

Other songs like “An Act of Kindness” and “Two Evils” are some of the slower songs on the album, each containing their own form of heartbreak and distress. The album ends with “Winter of Our Youth,” a ballad about long, chilly nights. It’s the slowest song on the album and closes it with a broken heart. Overall, Bastille has written a wellrounded, complex and emotional album, demanding to be listened to. It expresses a wide range of emotion, yet not at the cost of connecting with the listener.

Monarch Style: Review on Fake Bake’s Flawless Self-Tan Liquid Kim Bering Staff Writer

Looking tan always boosts an outfit’s overall appearance. Just because summer is fading away does not mean your tan has to, but finding the perfect self-tanner is difficult. The price, color, ingredients and longevity are important components that impact each product. With those things in mind, I tried a new product that caught me by surprise. This review focuses on all aspects of tanning brand Fake Bake’s Flawless Self-Tan Liquid. Due to many horrendous attempts at tanning, I almost gave up on finding tanning products. All of them looked too orange on my pale, Scandinavian skin. They were expensive, horrendously blotchy and contained

unhealthy ingredients. Not only am I pasty-pale, but have extremely sensitive skin too. I admit that I felt a little skeptical about trying the Flawless Self-Tan Liquid. Fake Bake’s Flawless Self-Tan Liquid is exceptional quality for its price tag of $26.50. It contains no parabens or other artificial ingredients, which is a perk for those with sensitive skin. It is also cruelty-free. The formula has a unique combination of DHA boosted by DMI and Erythulose that enhance the natural glow and longevity of the product. The base color of the liquid is green instead of red, which helps reduce that fake orange tan. The Flawless Self-Tan Liquid comes with a 6-ounce bottle of the tanning liquid, rubber gloves, a spray nozzle to attach to it and a profession-

The Mace & Crown

al mitt to apply the product. It even smells pleasantly tropical! Once the tanner is applied, it darkens gradually. It is designed to react differently with various skin tones, so the color will vary, yet look natural on whoever applies it correctly. Prepping the body for tanners is important. The first thing that is necessary to do before applying any tanning product is exfoliating the body and face. Use a body wash or soap bar with tiny granules in it while showering, so that any loose skin on the surface will be removed. When the body is clean, do not moisturize or apply lotion. The color will not darken as much. Applying the product is next. Spray the liquid directly onto the fabric side of the mitt instead of applying it to the

@maceandcrown

skin. I sprayed the mitt two to three times with the liquid, then rubbed it in circular motions on the body until the pigment was visibly blended. I only sprayed it once when applying it to my face, however. Periodically spray more liquid onto the mitt as needed. Let the tanner sit and dry for about five minutes just to be safe, so no pigment will transfer onto fabric. The color difference instantly changes and will gradually darken as time progresses. The resulting color was not too drastic, so I felt very pleased with how the shade turned out on my skin. Tanners usually appear too orange and fake on me, but this product looked surprisingly natural. The tan lasted me about two full days and began to fade on the third,

@maceandcrown

so I just repeated the process and reapplied more liquid to the existing tan,which resulted in a darker shade. The Self-Tan Liquid can be reapplied in layers to increase the dark color of the tan without any blotchiness as long as it has time to dry. Fake Bake’s Flawless Self-Tan Liquid gets two thumbs up from me. The product allows for an achievable, natural tan, making the perfect product for maintaining your postsummer glow and transitioning from summer to fall. The high quality and convenience are additional perks. The Flawless Self-Tan Liquid enhances that achievable natural tan for anyone who tries it!

MONARCH MUSIC MINUTE Hell YES!

I’ll Listen to it Twice, Even.

LINDSEY LANHAM, STAFF WRITER

We’re Getting There...

Eh...

Face Palm.

James Vincent McMorrow ‘We Move'

Courtesy of Jamesvmcmorrow.com

To unfamiliar ears, James Vincent McMorrow might fall somewhere on the spectrum between Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and James Blake. His 2010 debut album, “Early in the Morning,” championed acoustic folk, while 2014’s “Post Tropical” explored more soulful, atmospheric territory. On Sept. 2, the Irish singer-songwriter migrated to minimalist R&B with the release of “We Move.” McMorrow’s career has roots in folk, but has long cited hip-hop and R&B as sources of inspiration. In an interview, McMorrow said, “I’ve been dancing around the idea of making this record for most of my life, but it’s

always one thing or the other that just stopped it from happening.” He continued on by saying his second record gave him the confidence and financial security to move forward with his vision on “We Move.” Because the first two albums were recorded in seclusion, “We Move” marks not only a transition for McMorrow in sound, but also in his approach to recording music. “We Move” was recorded in Los Angeles, Toronto, London, Dublin and Miami and recruits English producer Two Inch Punch and Toronto-based OVO hit-maker Nineteen85 and Frank Dukes.

McMorrow spoke highly of Nineteen85 in another interview, referring to him as the catalyst for the album. “He saw something in it that I wasn’t seeing at the time. He heard something,” McMorrow said. “Rising Water,” co-produced by Nineteen85, opens the album and signifies the clear transformation with its hypnotizing layering of bass, synth and percussion. Throughout the rest of the album, McMorrow drizzles his falsetto over minimalist R&B production. In its 40 minutes, McMorrow reconstructs his identity and sound in “We Move.”

AlunaGeorge ‘I Remember'

Many things in life are best suited in pairs: peanut butter and jelly, honey and tea and in the context of electronic pop, Aluna Francis and George Reid. Formed in 2009, the duo came together when Reid contacted My Toys Like Me, the band Francis was in at the time, about remixing one of their songs. Eventually, the two clicked and released 2013’s “Body Music” and on Sept. 16, AlunaGeorge released their sophomore album “I Remember.” In an interview, Reid said that the two initially met over Myspace. From there, the duo garnered a nomination

for a 2013 BRIT Award of Critics’ Choice and a second place in BBC’s Sound of 2013 poll. Blogs and critics projected AlunaGeorge would be the next big thing for British pop. In some fashion, the British duo have lived up to that, eventually collaborating with acts such as Disclosure, Flume and Kaytranada. The production driving AlunaGeorge draws inspiration from hiphop, R&B and house. Francis channels a honey-laden vocal command, sweet but still surging with soul. “I Remember” opens with the ambient “Full Swing.” Accompanied

by a verse from Pell, Francis’s voice lights murky synths, heavy snares and hi-hats. After “My Blood,” Francis rejects heartbreak by singing, “You keep robbing my heart like a bank / And I only got myself to blame,” in the chorus of “Not Above Love.” The title track, co-produced by Flume, reminisces on lost love over whirling synths. The album closes with “Wanderlust,” and retains the overall theme. In the 12 tracks of “I Remember,” Francis and Reid struggle at moments, but ultimately manage to captivate the ear, move the body and touch the heart.

At 24-years-old, Mac Miller has come a long way since he began rapping at age 14. He’s made a name for himself as a rapper, honed his skills as a producer (Larry Fisherman) and gained many friends in the industry throughout his career. After 11 mixtapes and three studio albums, the Pittsburgh-native dropped “The Divine Feminine” on Sept. 16 from Warner Bros. Records and REMember Music. With notable contributions from Flying Lotus, Vince Staples, Earl Sweatshirt, Clams Casino, Ab-Soul, Schoolboy Q , Little Dragon and many more on past projects, Mac

Miller brings in Kendrick Lamar, CeeLo Green, Ariana Grande and others on his latest installment. At 50 minutes, “The Divine Feminine” examines love from different angles. With a heartfelt piano arrangement and stringed orchestration, “Congratulations” serves as the intro and tells listeners about Mac Miller’s love interest as he sings “Take your time my baby / Cause I’m waitin’ for you, for you” in the bridge. “Dang!” features the soulful vocals of Anderson .Paak and a funky, upbeat production courtesy of Pomo. Initially intended to be a song about lost loved ones, Mac Miller switched

up the concept to be about getting a girl back, tying in to the overall theme of the album. The subsequent tracks reflect on different aspects of love, including lust, commitment and the complicated emotions that surface throughout any romance. From making records about being young and high to constructing a cohesive, conceptual album imbued with neo-soul and jazz, Mac Miller’s nine years of rapping projects a distinct trajectory of growth, maturity and artistry with “The Divine Feminine” at its highest point.

A Must See

Well, there goes 2 hours of my life

‘Colonia’

2015 | Unrated | 110 min. When her activist boyfriend is captured by the Cuban military and sent to a coup to be imprisoned and tortured, Lena (Emma Watson) takes it upon herself to infiltrate the prison to try to rescue him. When she arrives, she soon discovers the coup is a mere front for a violent religious cult that few have ever returned from. In order to rescue her boyfriend, Daniel (Daniel Bruhl), she must endure the horrendous conditions women face in the coup and the horrific abuse the men and young boys endure

at the hands of the cult leaders. The main issue “Colonia” faces is the fact that it is divided into two different kinds of movies. The film opens as a romantic drama which leaves much to be desired. The main couple that Watson and Bruhl portray go as far as to say they’re in love and stare longingly into each other’s eyes, but their romance is as interesting as a sack of stale bread. The two leads do what they can (and they both individually give good performances) but it hurts the movie to open like this.

Despite the lackluster first act, once Lena enters the coup and is face to face with the horrors of the cult, “Colonia” becomes a tense and downright terrific historical drama. When the film decides to expose the personification of evil, the stakes are heightened and it becomes much more of an engaging thriller. It takes about twenty minutes to achieve this portion of the movie, but by the end it is definitely worth it. This film is available on Netflix.

‘Me Him Her’

2015 | Unrated | 98 min. When Brendan (Luke Bracey) decides it’s time to finally come out of the closet despite the fact that it could hurt his career as an actor, he calls on his longtime friend Corey (Dustin Milligan) for help. Although Corey isn’t shocked by his friend’s coming out (this becomes the running joke of the movie), he decides to fly out to Los Angeles in order to give emotional support as Corey deals with the changes that come with the reveal. Things get a little tricky for Corey when he meets and hooks up with Gabbi (Emily Meade), a lesbian who is reeling from the fallout of her

breakup with an unfaithful ex-girlfriend. As Corey tries to understand his feelings for Gabbi and the unusual circumstance they’re in, he also has to guide Brendan through the hurdles of being gay while under the public eye. Screenwriter Max Landis (“Chronicle” and “Victor Frankenstein”) marks his directorial debut with “Me Him Her,” and while he has produced solid work in the past, this film only proves that Landis doesn’t understand comedy. Watching “Me Him Her” is like watching an insufferably hyperactive child try to prove how funny they are to anyone who will

listen. Just about every character in the movie acts like a cartoon character, constantly doing and saying things that hold no resemblance to normal human behavior. Landis tries to up the already through-the-roof screwball level with every scene, but it only drives the audience away from feeling any sympathy for the characters when the script calls for it. All of that could be forgiven though if the movie wasn’t so boring. This film is available on Netflix.

‘Sky’

2015 | Unrated | 100 min. While a French couple is on vacation in the U.S., a domestic spat results in the wife packing her things and leaving behind her abusive husband, along with the life she has built in her home country. The wife, Romy (Diane Kruger), winds up in the city of Las Vegas in hopes of finding herself and her place in a strange location. As she goes through scenarios around Las Vegas and its surrounding desert, Romy comes across interesting characters. One of the people that crosses her path is Diego (Norman Reedus), a quiet and alluring

war veteran who spends his nights drinking and picking up hookers in Las Vegas. As she finds herself drawn into Diego’s complicated story, Romy struggles to find a place in her own story. When “Sky” opens, it starts off on a strong note as a quiet and unique Hitchcock-like thriller about a scared woman running from her past. On the drop of a dime though, it shifts gears into a road trip movie about selfdiscovery, which eventually forms itself into a cheesy Nicholas Sparkstype romance. This is ultimately the problem with “Sky”; it wants to

The Mace & Crown

blend numerous types of genres but the tonal transitions never connect to each other. The movie never really bores though, and depending on whether or not the viewer is in the mood for a sappy mellow drama, it succeeds in that request. Once Reedus stumbles into the picture, his subtle performance and interesting character arc really what carry the last half of the movie. It’s tonally all over the place, but “Sky” delivers as melodramatic cheese. This film is available on Netflix.

Duhart Hauls in Two TD'S to Secure a Homecoming Victory Alex Brooks Contributing Writer Homecoming came a little earlier this year for the Monarchs, but Coach Wilder and the ODU football team were ready for the challenge. ODU was in control for the entirety of the homecoming game, defeating the University of Texas at San Antonio 33-19. UTSA came to town sitting on a two-game losing streak, putting their record at 1-2. The Monarchs were also coming off two straight road losses, and were hoping to rebound at home on the big night. With a tough

C-USA schedule ahead, a win would do wonders for the quest of a bowl game invite. The stadium was packed to the brim with students and alumni ready to see their Monarchs get back on the winning track. It started on a good foot for ODU. They were able to move the ball down the field with ease for the majority of the first drive before stalling late and having to punt. With a couple of back and forth possessions, ODU was able to strike first, but failed to convert the extra point. UTSA answered early in the second quarter and converted on their

extra point to give them a 7-6 lead over the Monarchs leaving the crowd stunned. This would be the only lead the Road Runners would hold. David Washington orchestrated a late second quarter drive resulting in a two-yard rushing touchdown. Carrying that momentum into halftime was huge for ODU, giving them confidence and drawing the crowd back in to what was a seemingly boring game. ODU came out of the half on a roll stopping UTSA and going down the field scoring another six points, again failing to convert on the extra point. The Monarchs let the Road Run-

ners march down the field, but held strong, only giving up a field goal. ODU responded with a touchdown reception by Jonathan Duhart in the back of the end zone, which gave ODU a two-possession lead, 25-14. Duhart finished the game with six catches for 86 yards and two touchdowns. The Road Runners were able to get a late third quarter touchdown but failed to put up any points in the fourth quarter. ODU will be back on the field Oct. 1 in North Carolina to play the Charlotte 49ers.

Miami Marlins Star Killed in Boating Accident Harry Howard Jr. Sports Editor

On Sept. 25 the Miami Marlins announced that 24-yearold José Fernandez had passed away after an early morning collision in which his boat overturned. Leaving the baseball world at a loss for words, it’s hard to understand how a man that risked his life at sea to make it to America lost his life at sea in America. "The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of José Fernandez. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very dif-

This season, Fernandez was in consideration for the National League Cy Young Award, going 16-8 with a 2.86 ERA and posting an MLB-best 12.6 strikeouts per nine innings. In his final game on Sept. 20, he pitched eight shutout innings, striking out 12 batters, and allowed just three hits against the Washington Nationals. His scheduled start on Sept. 25 was pushed back to the day after and tragically will not hap-

In his short time as a Marlin, he dominated and became one of the greatest Marlin pitchers of all time. "I've never met anyone who extracted more joy, more passion out of what he did than José Fernandez. When you watched him pitch, he loved it so much. He had so much emotion," ESPN writer Buster Olney said. Fernandez, who was born in Cuba, came to the U.S. to play the game that he loved. It took him until his fourth try to reach

"All of baseball is shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of Miami Marlins pitcher José Fernandez. He was one of our game's great young stars who made a dramatic impact on and off the field since his debut in 2013. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, the Miami Marlins organization and all of the people he touched in his life," Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred

said in a recently released statement. In 76 career games, Fernandez went 38-17 with a 2.43 ERA and 589 strikeouts in 471 1/3 innings. Fernandez was a Hall of Fame talent on and off the field that will never be forgotten. "He's sort of the American dream for the Cuban baseball player. This kid is a symbol for Cuban-American life and the things that can be accomplished in this country," ESPN’s Dan Le Batard said.

however, they just couldn’t capitalize. In the 23rd minute, William White maneuvered his way up the field getting off a shot that was saved, but Massimo Franklin followed it firing it wide of the goal Tiesenhausen, who allowed three goals in the VCU loss, showed why he’s a two-time Conference USA section against the Blazers. Earning the Man of the Match for the Monarchs, he faced 16 shots and saved seven of them in his second shutout of the season. For the match, ODU attempted just 10 shots in 110 minutes of play compared to the 16 UAB tries. Joe Kuzminsky was able to match Tiesenhausen stellar play gaining his own shutout in the opposite goal. Kuzminsky collected two saves in his fourth shutout of the season.

Jesse Miralrio and Roger Rojas-Goodbold were the leading attackers for the Monarchs offense, taking three and two shots respectfully. The rest of the team only combined to take five shots at Kuzminsky. Late in the second half, Miralrio got one of the best scoring chances of the game off of a shot on target aimed at the upper left corner, but Kuzminsky was able to get his right hand on it. It would be the last shot attempted of regulation. In the first overtime period neither team ended up taking a shot. The final overtime each team had a chance to get on the scoreboard. UAB’s freshmen midfielder Chase Rushing's attempt was deflected away before Sebastian Hauret drilled a shot off the post in the 105th minute. ODU had won the last

Technology TECH IN A SEC China’s’ Heavenly Palace Falls China’s first space station Tiangong-1, or “Heavenly Palace,” was launched in 2011 in order to test life-support systems for a future larger space station. According to China’s official news service, Xinhua, China has lost control of Tiangong-1 and the station is predicted to fall back to earth in the latter half of 2017. Federal Policy on Self-Driving Cars Published The National Highway Transportation Safety Agency has finally published it’s official policy on self-driving cars. The policy uses the Society of Automotive Engineer’s to classify levels of automation, and sets a 15 point guide for anyone wanting to develop self-driving cars. Blizzard Drops Battle.net Blizzard’s familiar in-house gaming service Battle.net, which serves as the central networking “hub” from which all Blizzard games are played, will be dropping the “Battle.net” moniker as it created “occasional confusion and inefficiencies.” The actual system will continue working as normally, but without the name. Faster and Faster: Learning and Building with ODU Motorsports Ross Reelachart Technology Editor

It was a hot and clear day on Sept. 17, the perfect conditions for the ODU Society of Automotive Engineers to show off their hand-built formula and off road cars to curious students. The tour began in the Motorsports Lab in the Batten College of Engineering and Technology, the on-campus garage where the cars are built by team of engineering students. After a rundown of how they design and construct their cars, the students were given a demonstration of the Formula 75 car as it ran its paces around the WHRO parking lot. There they could see, hear and feel the product of dedicated and calculated engineering by students like themselves. This time last year, SAE had just started working on their Formula 75 car, which at the time was barely a metal frame. Aleric Sanders, SAE President and co-lead of the Formula team, explained what SAE has

learned over the last year, and how they were applying that knowledge to the new Formula 75 car. Sanders gave a simple rundown of some of the changes to the new Formula 75 car, explaining in a way that even someone with little automotive knowledge could understand. Reusing parts from a former project, the Formula 41 car, was prudent as it saved money and time for the team, and such considerations are as important to SAE as the actual physical construction of the car. Not only are the two teams, the Formula and Baja teams, tasked with building the car, but they are also responsible for writing up a business plan and proposal that could withstand scrutiny from actual industry experts. Of the many changes from the 41 car to the 75 car, most concerned reducing the weight of the vehicle. Where the 41 car had steel suspension, a fiberglass shell and a standard foam “impact attenuator,” the 75 car had carbon fiber suspension and a

carbon fiber shell. The Formula team also demonstrated their ability to fix and solve problems quickly, as well as their ability to continually learn new things to improve their cars. In order to lower the volume of the sound the car put out, they moved the exhaust and installed a new muffler. More importantly, what they learned was that placement of the exhaust on the car was important to meet specifications, and they are currently incorporating this knowledge into their new builds. Both the Formula and Baja teams are looking to upgrade and revise their cars as they learn and compete, with tangible results. Taking what they learned from the 41 car, the 75 car managed to place over 20 positions higher. The Formula team is now looking to add a front and rear

Photo by Josef Hicks wing to the 75 car to improve traction. Dave Stacknick, a Baja team member, said that the team is in the process of making their car more modular, allowing for easier repairs and upgrades. Also aiming to improve the car's performance, a freshman member is designing a new custom gearbox. New team members to both the Baja and Formula teams are welcome, even with little experience in automotive engineering. New members can expect to get a little hands-on time with the cars, as well as participate in the design portions. Those with exceptional passion and hours in the lab may even get a chance to drive the cars themselves.

Lyft, Uber and Ford Pursue Autonomous Car Technology Lyric Jones Contributing Writer Thanks to new technological advances, self-driving cars are gaining more of a presence in modern society. Lyft’s co-founder and president predicted that within five years a majority of Lyft’s peer-to-peer ride sharing will be done in self-driving cars. The company’s CEO also stated that personal ownership of an automobile

will dwindle because the autonomous rides will serve as a cheaper and more convenient option. He made this prediction in an essay on the future of transportation. These bold and ambitious predictions shed light on the advancements that will shape how humans travel in the future. During the week of Sept. 18, Lyft teamed up with General Motors in order to test drive their autonomous cars on the streets of San

Francisco and Phoenix. There will be quite a few restrictions on where and when these new self-driving cars can operate. According to Lyft’s CEO, the rides will start out at low speeds and in limited areas. They will not operate in bad weather until the technology improves. Lyft’s top competitor, Uber, rolled out a set of autonomous cars in Pittsburgh the same week as Lyft’s test drives. Their self-driving cars will feature a back-up driver in them while they are testing the technology out on the streets. Uber’s self-driving car is equipped with what is called a Lidar unit, allowing a 360 degree view of its surroundings. In a statement made by Uber, they said that self-driving Uber cars have the potential to improve society by “reducing the number of traffic accidents, which today kill 1.3 million people a year; freeing up the 20 percent of space in cities currently used to park the world’s billion plus cars; and cutting congestion, which wastes trillions of hours every year.”

@maceandcrown

The more striking advancement in the world of autonomous cars is Ford Motors’ plan to create a fully autonomous car that will not feature a steering wheel, gas pedal or brakes. Unlike autonomous cars that are currently being tested, Ford Motors’ cars will not have a human back-up driver. The existing prototypes are far from ready and are said to be a little zany due to the bulky sensors atop the roof. A series of Ford Fusion Hybrids have been modified and are the vehicle of choice for testing. They have mounted sensors on the roof, while their advanced software is under development. The company plans to have their fleet of autonomous cars on the road by 2021. The purpose of these self-driving cars will not be for personal purchase at first, but aimed more towards ride sharing services such as Lyft and Uber. Ford Motors seems to have the same prediction as Lyft, in that autonomous ride sharing might become more affordable and thus more prominent than self-owned vehicles.

A Bevy of Trailers and News from TGS 2016 Robert Williams Contributing Writer It’s that time of year again, and the Tokyo Game Show is back. TGS is a major gaming convention usually filled with an assortment of Japanese news, trailers, exclusives and big announcements. Unfortunately nothing too surprising happened at this year’s TGS with the exception of some surprising information from Kojima about his new game. In case you missed the convention and press conference here is a run down of all the biggest news. Hideo Kojima revealed new information about his new game "Death Stranding." He says the lines falling from his new games title are not ink line but coils. He goes on to explain that people are connected like strands and this gave birth to the title. "Death Stranding" will be an open world action game with online elements. All of this sounds very familiar to the Metal Gear series but he assures that this will be a whole new experience of its own. He goes on and says the online elements will also follow the games theme of “strands”. The game will support 4K resolution. Square Enix released a new trail-

er for "Final Fantasy 15," showing more characters and plenty of never before seen story elements. During the trailer it showed the dynamics of the relationships between the party members and a brief look at the overarching plot of game. There is more to this game than just driving a car around the country side with your boys. Square Enix also announce a PS4 bundle with the new PS4 Slim and "Final Fantasy 15." Unfortunately for America there is an exclusive PS4 Final Fantasy 15 Luna Edition, a custom PS4 Slim bundle, that will only release in Japan. "Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8" also made an appearance at TGS. There was a new trailer presented that announced the new release date set for January 2017. The trailer showed a lot more of the game play of the "Prologue" and video of the accompanying mobile game "Unchained X". There is a lot left to wonder about what will be in extra installments included in this Kingdom Hearts Collection. Sony has released a new trailer for "Horizon: Zero Dawn." Watching the beautiful in-game engine at work in 4K was breath taking. The story elements felt shrouded with mystery, teasing players with the explanation

for how the world ended up in a postapocalyptic Stone Age setting overrun by robotic dinosaurs. This trailer seems to ask more questions than it answers. "Horizon: Zero Dawn" is set to release February 2017. More news from Capcom about "Resident Evil 7: Biohazard" was announced at Tokyo Game Show. Capcom has a demo out now called the "Twilight version" which is the beginning hour of the game. I tried it out and the tension is unreal. I got outside the room I had been trapped in and had to turn it off. If it is a scare you are looking for, download the demo on PS4. The best part for the fans is that you do not need to be a PlayStation Plus subscriber to play the demo. The game will release September 2016. Publisher Koei Tecmo has released trailers for and announced "Nioh" and "Berserk," both action hack-andslash games. "Berserk" looks just like its 2016 anime remake. Though the game play trailer was short, "Berserk" gives off a Dynasty Warrior-like vibe with screens full of enemies being cut down with ease. There is a lot more blood and gore in "Berserk" of course. Both games are set to release February 2016. TGS finished off with some trailers

for "Dragonball Xenoverse 2", "World of Final Fantasy", "Gravity Rush 2", "Watch Dogs 2" and "Nier: Automa-

ta". So while the news from TGS may be a little lacking this year, hopefully the games featured will make up for it.

First Use of Emergency Alert to Find Suspect in New York Bombing Audra Reigle Staff Writer

On Sept. 17, bombs were found in New York and New Jersey. On Monday, an alert was sent out to the people in New York City asking for their assistance in finding the man that had placed them in the first place. Normally, these alerts are reserved for weather or abducted children, but for the first time the alert was sent out to inform the public about the man associated with the incident. According to the New York Times, the system has been used in the past, such as for the Boston bombings in 2013 and last month in Los Angeles during the active shooter scare. In both of those cases, citizens were urged to shelter in place. This is the

first time the system has been used to inform the public and enlist their help in finding a suspect. The alert message is only sent out to those in the area relevant to the emergency events using nearby towers. In this case, it was sent to those in the area of New York City. The process of creating the message for the alert only took about 15 minutes after the staff at the city’s emergency management agency decided to send one. Alert systems have been around for some time now. The system was originally started up in 1951 under the name Key Station System, or Control of Electromagnetic Radiation (CONELRAD), according to FEMA. In its early days, it was only broadcast across the radio on stations associated with 640 and 1240 kHz AM. It

was not until 1963 that the system changed to the Emergency Broadcast System (EBS) and addressed the nation with audible alerts. In 1976, it became possible for the system to be used by the state and local levels of government. Another upgrade to the system in 1997 allowed the president to address the nation within 10 minutes of an emergency. The FCC says that the system can be used by the president to address U.S. citizens, but state and local governments can also use the system for emergencies more prevalent to them. The system can still be used even if the facilities are unattended, as alerts can still be issued even if one link in the system is broken. Messages can also be transmitted in non-English languages. ODU uses a similar system. With

the campus alert system, students, faculty and staff who have signed up for the system will receive alerts in regards to emergencies on and around the campus. These alerts are divided into two categories, near term action and ongoing threats. Near term action alerts involve the campus community and can include events such as weather alerts, closures and dangerous situations on the cam-

Photo courtesy of FEMA.gov pus. Ongoing threat alerts are used when there are individuals that pose a threat to the campus or when an offender can be located as a result of the alert. The difference between ODU’s alert system and the government’s alert system is that ODU’s can be sent to multiple points of contact that are provided, such as cell phones and emails.

Players Reach News Depths and Heights with ‘Bioshock: The Collection’ Brooke Nicholson Contributing Writer “Bioshock: The Collection” lets newcomers travel back to the infamous cities of Rapture and Columbia with the newest, remastered edition of all three games in the series. After receiving positive reviews for each game upon their original release, 2K Games decided to bring players back to the underwater city of Rapture and the floating city of Columbia in crystal clear 1080p. The collection

includes each game's critically-acclaimed DLC along with the original content. The Bioshock series is a first-person, horror-based shooter that transports players to different utopian worlds— both underwater and above ground. The series takes a spin on multiverse universes with an Art Deco and objectivist twist to it, each game taking on a personality of its own. While “Bioshock 2” and “Bioshock Infinite” get the least amount of noticeable upgrades, the first Bioshock

dives deeper into Rapture. The opening sequence begins with the same haunting city fans grew to know and love. Although “Bioshock: The Collection” doesn’t make any additions to the games , it does give players a chance to replay a classic series with improved graphics, along with a director’s commentary for all three games. The secret commentary hidden within the game gives players a chance to get inside creative director Ken Levine’s mind and listen to his

thoughts about different aspects of the game. In addition to the newest release of the “Bioshock” series, 2K Games decided to leave out the multiplayer component in “Bioshock 2” to emphasize a strong single-player experience. Even though the “Bioshock” series is nine-years-old, players will agree that returning to those familiar cities with better graphics still feels like a new experience. 2013’s “Bioshock Infinite” might seem similar to its original copy, but

@maceandcrown

players can expect smoother gameplay with the 60 fps upgrade from its console iterations. The only downfalls with the remastered collection are small bugs that plague the game. Still, for players who haven’t experienced a few of the Bioshock games without the added DLC, this collection is stunning, as well as a great deal. “Bioshock: The Collection” was released for Xbox One, PS4 and PC in North America on Sept. 13, and worldwide on Sept. 15.
