PRIMARYSCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS CATALOGUE

Volume3

Dear Educator

We are very excited to present you with the 3rd edition of our fabulous Macmillan Education Primary School Highlights catalogue. This catalogue highlights the products we’re most excited to be showcasing to the market as they’re just perfect for today’s learning and teaching requirements. These products have been developed so that learning and teaching is engaging, fun and often personalised.

We have also crammed the catalogue full of interesting features, articles and teaching tips. These include practical teaching tips and ideas on how to engage with today’s learners.

We’ve worked together to produce more than a catalogue – it’s a free learning and teaching resource in itself. We hope you enjoy using it as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Much collaboration was involved to ensure we’ve developed something quite dynamic. Enjoy!

SpellingandGrammarRules

Macmillan’s Rules! series is a whole-school primary program. The books can be used across selected grades as deemed fit by the teacher.

The Spelling Rules program teaches learners strategies that move spelling from working memory into long-term memory – making spelling stick.

The Grammar Rules series covers grammatical structures for particular text types, purposes and audiences. Your learners will learn about grammar from the contextual level of the whole text down to the sentence and word level. They’ll also learn how to use grammatical knowledge when responding to texts and when constructing their own texts.

ProgressinReadingand LanguageAssessment

The PiRA tests enable schools to build a comprehensive profile of each learner’s performance.

What diagnostic information will I gain for my learners?

• Standardised scores immediately see whether the learner is above or below the national average for their year cohort.

• Age-standardised scores assess how the learner is doing against other learners of the same age (calculated in months for accuracy).

• Performance indicators compare each learner’s score to performance within the standardisation sample and understand whether their attainment is above, below or within the national average.

• Reading ages get a quick measure of ability against the age at which the learner’s performance is typical.

• Hodder Scale scores our independent scale – allows fine monitoring of progress and the prediction of future performance.

MaxMATHEMATICS

MathsPrimary

Max Maths Primary – A Singapore Approach is a six-level course in mathematics for young learners. It offers a complete solution for schools following the Cambridge Primary maths curriculum framework, and has been specifically designed to support learners who are learning in International and Englishmedium school settings. In addition to traditional print Learner Books, there is a range of supporting materials for digital learning, assessment, parents and a robust teacher-training programme.

These are designed for extended practice and consolidation in class, with plenty of additional activities that enable self-guided problem solving. Each topic is clearly cross-referenced through the Learner Book. At the end of each stage, learners have a workbook which they can refer back to and that shows their progression.

The Journals provide a way to involve parents in the learning process and are designed to be taken home to build upon the work in the classroom and develop learners’ maths vocabulary skills. Reinforcing the Singaporean Approach they provide a framework for learners to reflect on their learning.

The Teacher’s Guide comes with full support to guide teachers through each topic, including English language support. A suggested instructional approach, assessment, additional class activities and full answers are provided.

The Teacher’s Presentation Kit is a digital resource that offers a suite of easy-to-use materials for interactive whiteboards or projectors. It includes an enhanced digital version of the Learner Book for front-of-class teaching as well as downloadable and printable activity sheets for whole-class engagement and additional vocabulary support. A classroom management tool, teacher’s notes and full answers are also included.

TRY THIS IN CLASS: MULTI-MODAL MATHS THINK BOARDS

Any topic in maths can be taught in a variety of ways and any maths problem can often be solved in different ways. Using multi-modal ‘think boards’ is a deliberate means of helping learners make the connections between different mathematical concepts. During lessons learners create ‘think boards’ to represent their mathematical understanding in different ways:

• Real things: ‘Do’ (concrete manipulatives – physical objects such as squares, etc.)

• Diagrams: ‘Visualise’ (representations or visualisations – pictures, graphs, charts, etc.)

• Stories: ‘Apply’ (using stories to tell real world experiences  – e.g. playing away from home our team lost 0–3. In the return match at home we won 5–0. What was the goal difference between the two teams?)

• Words: ‘Communicate’ (presenting the problem in words – e.g. determine x if x to the power of two equals sixteen)

• Numbers: ‘Calculate’ (using numbers to calculate)

• Symbols: ‘Manipulate’ (rewrite the equations where at least one of the numbers is represented as ‘unknown’ – e.g.  a + 4 = 10; x + y = 24

A think board allows teachers to understand how learners got to a specific solution. If the solution is not correct then the teacher can discuss the learner’s calculation process with them and address any errors.

Think boards also give learners the opportunity to reflect on their work and why they got to the correct or incorrect answer and then potentially self-correct as necessary. This allows for errors to become part of the learning process.

CONNECTING SCIENCE TO THE REAL WORLD

Even from a young age learners want to know how what they learn is relevant to them.

In science class, relevance has four distinct aspects for learners:

1. Personal relevance – how does this relate to me?

2. Professional relevance – will this help me in my future jobs or career?

3. Social relevance – how does this relate to current social ideas?

4. Personal + Social relevance – will this help me become a better citizen?

(Van Aalsvoort, 2004)

A lot of teachers and experts agree that contextualised learning is the most effective way for learners to take an interest in what they are learning. Relevance is also an important tool for learners to apply and remember what was taught as they can recall the context which is meaningful to them.

Relevancy should be established early so learners are engaged from the start.

There are a few very effective options available for engaging learners through context:

• Ask a question: Start by asking an interesting question about the subject that would spark curiosity. For example, if you are teaching about weather patterns, the question may be something “debatable”, such as: Is global warming real?

• Use visuals: A picture speaks a thousand words and often learners engage immediately with visuals. News footage, videos (documentaries), virtual reality and photos are all great stimuli to get learners thinking about the science topic in the real-world context. Having a library of appropriate, authentic and engaging scientific content will help engage learners.

• Ask learners to source information on a topic in advance which can then be used in class. Giving learners an opportunity to explore a topic and set out what is interesting to them about it gives them ownership and motivates them to participate as they’re focusing on their perspective. Ask them to find relevant, authentic facts, examples and sources and then present their ideas through debates or mini presentations. This will clearly lay out what learners find relevant and the teacher can see what their level of understanding is from the beginning. For older learners, peer review through “question and answer” sessions will teach learners the importance of understanding a topic and being able to substantiate their findings. They will learn from each other and will also want to improve on their efforts for future tasks.

Scientific literacy’s importance has never been greater as the world continues to develop dependency on science and technology for safety, comforts and survival. It’s up to teachers to make sure learners are tomorrow’s critical thinkers and scientists. Which is why it’s so important to teach science in a way that makes it matter to them.

How to effectively bring science into the primary school classroom

STEM is a key principle for a productive and sustainable future, and the future is in the hands of learners. This puts a lot of pressure on primary school teachers to get their heads and minds across the S(cience) in STEM.

Primary science teachers are faced with four challenges: defining science, their own understanding of science, their learners’ understanding of science, and finding the time to make science happen in the classroom. It can be daunting but the right methodology is the best starting point.

Here are some simple steps you can take to start building solid science learning in your primary class:

1. Begin with a solid lesson plan that engages learners from the start!

2. Familiarise yourself with the 5E Model of Science – Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate.

3. Make learning relevant to your learners’ interests.

4. Create a scientific learning environment in the class, like making a show and tell corner, getting hands-on, and surrounding your class with science.

5. Create a scientific learning environment in your school. Speak to your fellow teachers and encourage cross-curricular learning wherever possible. Science shouldn’t be restricted to a lesson. It’s integrated into our lives and should be integrated into all aspects of schooling.

Quick tips for teaching coding

There is no ‘geek’ gene – every child has the capacity to code.

Use peer instruction – learners can help each other understand difficult concepts.

Use live coding – create programs in front of learners as you teach.

Have learners make predictions – this makes learning more effective than only seeing results.

Use pair programming – learners can help each other with misconceptions and teach each other. 6. Use worked examples with labelled sub-goals – talk through step-by-step guides showing how to solve an existing problem. 7. Stick to one language – attempting to force transference too early confuses learners and erodes their confidence.

Use authentic tasks – this motivates learners which helps foster understanding.

Remember that novices are not experts – novices require different techniques and tools.

Don’t just code – create time for teaching concepts such as syntax, semantics, algorithms, and design.

CREATIVE HISTORY TEACHING

Bring history learning into the learners’ world through creative applications of content. The key to teaching history creatively is to treat history as an active process of enquiry by children. It also involves the use of the imagination to interpret evidence and facts. This can be done by the teacher:

• setting up open-ended and wide-ranging investigations

• stimulating learners to think actively and constructively while putting together different sources of evidence to develop a picture of the past

• challenging learners with mysteries to solve

• guiding children to pose their own hypotheses and questions and then to test these against evidence

TEACHING GEOGRAPHY IN A FUN WAY

Geographic concepts can often be foreign to children simply because geography explores places, natural phenomena and theories that learners are not familiar with. This can easily disengage or confuse learners. Engaging exercises and tools are a great way to break down these barriers and make learning fun. Here are some ideas to integrate into lessons:

• Share/read stories. Stories about different cities, countries, landscapes or geographical features bring learning to life. The correlation will peak their interest and make facts easier to remember through association.

• Play and learn music. Songs are a great way to memorise items, features or processes.

• Create art. Learn about artists native to the country you are studying or special art styles that are based in a geographical region.

• Create a city/continent/country carton. This is great for individual or group work. As learners fill a box with items they associate with a specific place they will remember what they found interesting. Integrating this with a show and tell or exhibition then gives learners the opportunity to learn from each other.

• Put a puzzle together. Puzzles are a great way for learners to actively see where borders and rivers and other land features are relative to each other and how they fit together on a map.

GUIDE FOR TEACHING LEARNERS GOOD DECISION MAKING

Children have to make a wide range of decisions on a daily basis. These decisions include things like choosing how to respond to or behave in a given situation, which friends to have, or simply what clothes to wear. It can get overwhelming if children don’t have the right tools to make good decisions. This may lead to indecision, avoidance or bad decisions which have negative results.

Teaching learners how to make decisions is a valuable life skill as this prepares them for making future, more complicated decisions as they get older. When children follow a decision-making process, they are able to make deliberate and thoughtful decisions. The recommended steps are:

Step 1: Identify the problem

In this step the learners will analyse a problem. They will determine if something really is a problem, who it will affect, who needs to get involved and how long they have to come up with a solution.

Step 2: Gather relevant information

Next, learners will need to look at what information is required to make their decision. Some information will be gathered through self-assessment. They’ll have to ask themselves what they want and need and what their values are in addressing the problem.

Step 3: Brainstorm solutions

During this step, children begin listing possible solutions. Exploring multiple solutions might take more time but this allows learners to think about the problem from different angles.

Step 4: Identify possible consequences

Next, learners will consider and prioritise all their options and order them based on which solutions they believe will best solve the problem.

Step 5: Make a decision

Once a learner has thoroughly weighed up all their options they can make a choice.

Step 6: Take action

The learner will implement the decision they came to. They can choose to do it on their own or ask for help.

Step 7: Evaluate the outcome

In this final step, learners reflect on their decision. They determine if the problem was resolved and how effectively. At this point they may see room for improvement for similar problems and learn which other applications may have been more effective.

KeyFeaturesandBenefits

Key vocabulary is carefully introduced and constantly revised. Paired books present the same key vocabulary in different text types.

Paired books use the same high-frequency words in different sentence structures and text types.

A variety of text types enables the development of a range of reading strategies for text that has different purposes.

Flying start to literacy is sequenced into 7 Developmental Stages across 30 Guided Reading levels. Reading strategies are developed and consolidated at each level.

Flying Start to Literacy supports a systematic and explicit sequence of phonemic awareness and phonics. This sequence is matched in the books to provide a context for learning.

Reading and writing are linked through the lesson plans which include writing as an integral part of each lesson. The range of text types provides models of writing for the readers.

Lesson plans provide opportunities for oral reading and include re-reading of books to improve word identification skills and comprehension.

Assessment forms part of each teaching sequence. This informs further instruction. Assessment checklists are available.

TIPS TO DEVELOP LEARNERS’ READING SKILLS FOR CONTENT SUBJECTS

Foundational reading skills are vital for learners to be able to comprehend any subject. While teachers can create interest and comprehension in a subject through stories and examples, reading the subject matter is how learners build their own understanding and significance.

Unfortunately, many children find reading a chore, especially if it is linked to lesson plans and learning complex information. Many learners also struggle to read effectively for comprehension which hinders the reading process.

Here are some simple and effective ways to help learners build reading skills to better understand classroom curricula:

1. Annotate and highlight text

Teach learners to underline or highlight important valuable information as they read. Have learners write notes and questions on the pages they are reading to aid comprehension and focus.

2. Personalise the content

Learners increase their understanding when they relate content to their own lives or real-world events. Let them write these personal connections on the page.

3. Practice problem-solving skills

Blend real-world problem-solving skills into the curriculum. Ask your learners to write down their solutions and discuss them as a class or in small groups.

4. Incorporate more senses

Add activities which incorporate more senses as they read. Encourage learners to read aloud, write notes as they read or draw pictures.

5. Understand common themes

Instructing learners to look for and write down common themes in a text will increase engagement. Ask learners to share their findings with the class to share knowledge and create in-depth understanding.

6. Set reading goals

Have learners set their own reading goals. This motivates learners as they can measure their own progress and improvement.

7. Read in portions

Long, complex texts can be more manageable and easier to comprehend by breaking them into smaller sections. This will help learners retain the information as the class discusses the materials. This can also help learners build confidence in understanding complex subjects.

8. Let learners guide their reading

Learners process reading material and curricula in very different ways. As reading strategies are implemented one will see which solutions work for each learner individually.

Implementing more reading activities into classroom course work will improve learners’ vocabulary, writing skills, problem solving, concentration and cognitive development to help build a solid foundation for future learning.

MacmillanEnglishExplorers

An eight-level reading scheme, complimented by a fourlevel phonics scheme.

Macmillan English Explorers is developed for use in Grades R–6. These books expose children to real language and develop their reading and vocabulary skills.

Macmillan Explorers Phonics complements the first four levels of Explorers by teaching children to sound out words and blend sounds to read and spell them accurately.

All the readers have a story which has been written using high-frequency words, plus storyspecific words which, as far as possible, are clarified by full-colour illustrations.

Free downloadable teacher notes are available for each level of the series and comprehension material has also been developed for each story to further enhance language learning.

Features

• The rich variety of text types, including non-fiction texts, means any child can enjoy reading, wherever their interests lie.

• Comprehension and Vocabulary Workbooks practise and develop a range of reading skills.

• ‘Comprehension Extra’ activities in the Teacher’s Book encourage learners to consider aspects of the text such as characterisation, style and plot.

• Phonics Workbooks support systematic teaching of phonics.

• Word recognition skills are reinforced by the Workbooks and wordcards on the Teacher’s CDROM (included in the Teacher’s Book Pack).

• The Teacher’s Book Pack supports structured whole-class teaching with page-by-page lesson notes.

• Cross-curricular content at higher levels means children can make links to other school subjects.

• The stories promote social values such as friendship and respect.

• Teacher Training DVD is available on request.
