1. Lay a dish towel flat, with one corner facing you. Place two bottled drinks—or a sub sandwich and a drink—near bottom corner of towel, leaving a few inches between them. Start rolling. 2. Once rolled, stand bottles up. 3. Twist ends and tie in a knot. Use the outer folds as pockets for straws, napkins and trail mix.

Fancy Fruit Refreshing lemonades for those hot summer days.

LEMONADE BASE time 4 hours, 35 minutes • $ • makes about 2 liters

1 3/4 cups white sugar 8 cups water 1 1/2 cups lemon juice (juice from about 6 lemons) 1. In a small saucepan, combine sugar and 1 cup water. Bring to a boil and stir to dissolve sugar. 2. Cool to room temperature, then cover and refrigerate until chilled. 3. Remove seeds from lemon juice, but leave pulp. 4. In pitcher, stir together chilled syrup, lemon juice and remaining 7 cups water. Note: You can extract more juice by microwaving the lemon for 5 to 15 seconds before juicing.

4 peaches, peeled and cubed 1 peach for garnish 8 cups water 2 cups sugar 3/4 cup lemon juice 1. Bring peaches, sugar and water to a boil, then simmer until sugar is dissolved (about 10 minutes). 2. Allow mixture to cool, then strain through sieve. 3. Stir in lemon juice. 4. Add ice and garnish with peach slices.

BLACKBERRY MINT 15 minutes + lemonade base time + overnight refrigeration • $ • makes about 2 liters

2 liters lemonade base 3/4 cup blackberries handful of mint leaves mint sprig for garnish 1. Start with lemonade base and mix in a handful of slightly torn mint leaves. Refrigerate overnight, then strain lemonade to remove mint leaves. 2. Pulse blackberry with about 1/4 cup of lemonade in a blender until fruit is slightly broken. 3. Add blackberry mixture to lemonade and stir well. 4. Add ice and garnish with skewer of blackberries and mint sprigs.

popsicle mold 6 popsicle sticks 2 cups strawberries 1 cup pina colada drink mix 1 cup plain Greek yogurt 1 cup canned, crushed pineapple 3 bowls 1. Puree 2 cups strawberries in blender. 2. Combine pina colada drink mix, Greek yogurt and undrained can of pineapple. 3. Divide pina colada mixture in half and put each in a bowl. 4. Divide pureed strawberry mixture into fourths. Add two parts into a separate strawberry-only bowl. Add 1 1/2 parts to the first bowl of pina colada mixture and 1/2 into the second. 5. Add first layer of strawberry-only mixture to popsicle molds and place in freezer until pretty solid. 6. Take molds out of freezer and add popsicle stick and second layer (second -darkest pink mixture). Freeze. 7. Add last layer to molds and freeze until solid. machemag.com  SUMMER 2012

ICE CANDY ice bags base liquid small fruits or herbs 1. Create base liquid. 2. Fill bags up 3/4 full with base and drop in whole fruit or herb. 3. Tie bags and place flat in freezer. Once flat, maneuver solid pieces around so they’re spread evenly throughout bag (otherwise they’ll clump up in one place). 4. Freeze overnight or until solid. Try these flavors: CANTALOUPE MINT Cantaloupe Base 1. Puree cantaloupe flesh in food processor until smooth (yielding 1 1/3 cup of puree). 2. Place 1/2 cup water in saucepan, add 1/4 cup sugar and bring to a boil over high heat. 3. Stir in 1 tablespoon of finely slivered fresh mint leaves and remove from heat. Let stand for 1 minute. 4. Stir mint syrup into cantaloupe puree, add 1/4 to 1/3 cup of lemon juice, depending on sweetness of melon, until desired flavor is reached.

In pitcher, stir together chilled syrup, 1 1/2 cups lime juice and 7 cups water. Tip: Remove seeds from pomegranate while fruit is submerged in a bowl of water. When the seeds pop, they won’t stain everything in sight!

DREAMCATCHER BACKDROP This jumbo dream catcher makes for a beautiful ceremony backdrop and will be a great keepsake to display in your home. rings or hoops yarn beads feathers

1. Collect rings or hoops of varying sizes; we used craft rings, which you can buy at a local art supply store or get online for more variety of sizes. We also used embroidery hoops, which give you two rings per hoop, as well as a little more depth (due to their thickness) to your finished product. 2. Wrap the rings with your yarn of your choice and create your “catch” as tight or as spaced as you like. Follow illustration. 3. Once the rings are all wrapped and have the inner catcher, you need to lay all the rings out on the floor in a pattern of your liking. Make sure that the rings are touching their adjacent rings so you have a place to tie them together. 4. Using the same color yarn, tie your dream catchers together. We then hung ours on a wall to figure out where to adorn beads and feathers. 5. Using yarn again, we tied dangling pieces along the bottom of the dream catcher installation. Simply thread beads and glue on feathers. Tip: Run a bead of hot glue on the feather and just wrap the yarn around the feather.

BRIDE/ GROOM STANDS Add a fun and natural element to your tablescape

thick wire rock paint 1. Use some thick wire (found at any art supply shop) and wrap it around a rock base, trying to balance out your wraps evenly so the stand doesn’t wobble. 2. Give your stand a stem for height and wrap the top into a circle, which enables you to insert an escort/ place card. 3. Paint or decorate your stand however you like.

Make your own! We picked out our favorite fabrics for our pillow tops and purchased brown felt to use for the bottom of the pillow. The brown felt simulated a leather look, which we loved because we didn’t have to break the bank on leather! Using felt on the bottom of the pillow also added durability for outdoor or floor use. The less expensive felt allowed us to splurge on more expensive fabrics and more pillow inserts. We purchased our inserts from pillowsxpress.com, where you can get a great selection of sizes and firmness. Be sure to sew a pocket pillow cover so you can change out your covers with the seasons!

FEATHER STREAMERS This tutorial can be used for virtually any shape (we’ve done it with paper hearts in the past). It’s a super inexpensive and easy way to add a little ‘cute’ to any event. construction paper scissors thread sewing machine

1. Cut a simple feather shape out of construction paper. We cut three different sizes and used the shapes as templates. 2. After cutting out a few dozen feathers in varying colors and sizes, we turned to our sewing machine to string them together. Simply sew a straight line through the center of the feather, and without cutting your thread, continue on to your second feather and so on. 3. Soon you’ll have a threaded string of feathers, then just tape or tie the strings onto a pole and hang your feather backdrop!

FEATHER CHARGER feathers hot glue gun construction paper scissors 1. Lay a plate upside down on a piece of construction paper and trace its shape. 2. Cut a circle about 2 inches shorter than the circle you traced. 3. Use your glue gun to glue feathers around the perimeter of the circle so that when you place your plate on the charger, the feathers are seen. 4. Continue laying feathers for a full and naturallooking charger!

NAPKIN RING plain napkin rings hot glue gun yarn plastic animals 1. We found our plain napkin rings for a dollar at the thrift store and immediately realized their potential for fun! 2. We began by picking up plaincolored yarn and used it to give the rings some texture. Dab a bead of hot glue at the edge of the ring and stick on your yarn piece, then just wrap it around until your ring is completely covered in yarn. Add a dab of glue at the end and you’re set! 3. Pick an animal of your choice and use the hot glue (or clear gorilla glue) to adhere the animal to the yarn.

BOARDWALK FRIES Don’t wait in line on the boardwalk. Bake your own fries. 1 hour, 20 minutes • $ • makes 4-6 servings

3 russet potatoes (about 24 ounces) 3/4 teaspoon sea salt, plus more to taste 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus more to taste 3 tablespoons olive oil 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. 2. Cut potatoes lengthwise into 1/4-inch-thick wedges, place in large bowl and soak in cold water for 30 minutes. Drain potatoes and pat dry. 3. Dry bowl, return potatoes to bowl and toss with olive oil. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and spread on a parchment-lined baking sheet (don’t overcrowd the fries) and bake on the bottom rack of the oven for 35 minutes, flipping halfway through cooking, until golden brown.

GARLIC LIME SHRIMP Not just delish. These skewers are pretty, too! 55 minutes • $$ makes 8 servings

1 1/2 pounds of deveined raw shrimp metal or wooden skewers 1/4 cup lime juice 1/4 cup orange juice 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon dried minced garlic 1 teaspoon dried minced onions 3/4 teaspoon ground cumin 3/4 teaspoon dried oregano leaves 1/2 teaspoon dried cilantro leaves 1/2 teaspoon coarse ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon salt 1. Mix juices, oil, spices and salt in a small bowl. 2. Place shrimp in large, resealable plastic bag or glass dish. Add marinade; turn to coat well. 3. Refrigerate 30 minutes or longer for extra flavor. 4. Brush grill grates thoroughly with vegetable oil and preheat grill for 10 minutes on medium-high heat setting. 5. Thread shrimp onto skewers, place on the grill and cook for about 3 minutes on each side, or until shrimp turn pink and are lightly charred. Note: If using wooden skewers, soak them in cold water for at least 30 minutes before grilling to prevent burning. If using metal skewers, brush with oil or spray with nonstick spray.

wooden gift tags craft glue fabric scissors sponge brush string 1. Use sponge brush to paint glue onto one side of wooden gift tag, evenly covering from edge to edge. 2. Place tag glue side up and glue a small piece of fabric (slightly larger than the tag) onto tag. 3. Smooth fabric so there are no wrinkles and let dry. 4. Once dry, turn tag over and cut away excess fabric. 5. Use scissors to poke a hole in the fabric so the tag hole shows through. 6. Pull string through the tag hole and attach to anything you want to decorate.

NAUTICAL ROPE BRACELET 3 feet natural cotton rope 2 end caps 2 small rings 1 hook hot glue gun wire cutters pliers (These are used to open and close the rings, but as long as the rings in this project are small, you can just use your hands.)

1. Measure your wrist by twisting the ropes around it. Don’t make the ropes too long so that bracelet falls off your hand —the length of rings and a hook will add extra centimeters. Cut the ropes. 2. We cut three pieces of rope. You may want to sew your three ropes together at the ends, this will make it easier to place them inside the end cap. 3. Pour glue into the first end cap, stick the ropes into it and press tightly. Be careful if you’re using a metallic end cap like we did, because it might get hot and burn your fingers. Use a glove or a piece of cloth to hold it. 4. Repeat for the other end. 5. Attach the rings to the end cap and place the hook. 6. Voila! Your summer nautical bracelet is ready!skewers, soak them in cold water for at least 30 minutes before grilling to prevent burning. If using metal skewers, brush with oil or spray with nonstick spray.

1. Start with a rectangle piece of cloth about 8” long and 5” wide. 2. Fold in ends (hot dog bun style, remember elementary school) and iron them down. 3. Fold in both ends to the middle and iron them down again. 4. Put a dab of hot glue in the middle and pinch together to create the bow-tie shape. 5. Cut a small piece of rectangular cloth (about 3” long and 1” thick). Fold sides in same as step 2. 6. Wrap cloth around the center of bow-tie and glue in back (you can pick which side you like better of your bowtie). 7. Glue a pin, or clip in the back (cover the piece hitting the bow-tie with a little cloth to help secure it). 8. Put it on your pup, little girl, son or hubby. machemag.com  SUMMER 2012

As we maintain our beach bodies, whether it be boosting our workout regimen, getting a spray tan or painting those pretty little toenails, there’s one thing that can’t be skipped: hair removal. There are a range of removal methods —from very temporary to permanent.

SHAVING Shaving and depilatories remove hair at skin level; waxing and tweezing remove hair from the follicle, so it will take longer to grow back. Be aware that shaving and depilatories may cause razor bumps and ingrown hairs.

WAXING With waxing, there’s a possibility of burning or blistering if the wax is too hot, so it’s best to find a professional with proper training. A professional should test the temperature of the wax on the inside of her wrist before applying it to a client’s desired area.

SUGARING Sugaring dates to the ancient Egyptians, who used a mixture of water, sugar and lemon juice to remove hair. The mixture is applied like a wax, but it can be removed with water and is less irritating, which is great for someone with sensitive skin.

THREADING If you’re looking for something different, but still want to stick with a temporary method, try threading. Threading is commonly used to shape the eyebrows. It uses 100 percent cotton thread to roll and twist along the surface of the skin to remove the hair from the follicle.

LASER Laser technology is a method of semipermanent hair removal. It impairs the follicle by pulsing a laser beam onto the skin. It will reduce the number of hairs up to 90%. The procedure is offered in dermatology offices and medical spas.

SEMIPERMANENT

ELECTROLYSIS If you’re willing to pay more to be smooth 24/7, try a more permanent solution like electrolysis, which uses electricity to remove hair. Regrowth is likely to be impossible because the papilla at the base of the hair follicle is destroyed.
