Message from the President It has been an honour to serve as President of the MacKenzie Art Gallery Board of Trustees over the past year. With the 60th anniversary of the MacKenzie Art Gallery, the 50th anniversary of the MacKenzie Gallery Volunteers, and the 40th anniversary of Bazaart, there was much to celebrate in 2013/14! Last year more than 85,000 people experienced a robust year of programming at the MacKenzie. Our major anniversary exhibition, How We Filled the Vault: 60 Years of Collecting, was the largest display of the Permanent Collection since 1990, featuring over 250 works from a collection of more than 4,500. In September, more than 500 guests attended the opening of 7: Professional Native Indian Artists Incorporated, a critically acclaimed exhibition now in the midst of a national tour with stops at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Kelowna Art Gallery, and the McMichael Canadian Art Collection (Kleinburg, ON). From Saskatchewan artist Amalie Atkins, to Iranian-American artist Shirin Neshat, the MacKenzie once again offered a full year of engaging public programs including a collaboration with the 101st Grey Cup Festival Committee which featured the work of Regina artist Belinda Kriek. Of course, none of our successful exhibitions, public programs or collaborations would be possible without our dedicated volunteers. I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation for 50 years of generosity and support from our MacKenzie Gallery Volunteers. The contributions made by the Volunteers, both past and present, have provided the strong foundation upon which the MacKenzie has been built, while entrusting us with a legacy which we can all proudly enjoy, with the understanding that we must continue with the same hard work and dedication if we are to remain a sustainable and impactful arts institution. The close of 2013/14 marked a new chapter in the history of the MacKenzie Art Gallery as we bid farewell to Jeremy Morgan after more than two years as Executive Director. Jeremy was instrumental in leading the development and implementation of a five-year strategic plan which sets the course for the Gallery’s continued sustainability and success. We wish Jeremy the best of luck in his future endeavours! More recently, in May 2014 the Board of Trustees welcomed Anthony Kiendl as the Gallery’s new Executive Director & CEO. An award-winning curator, writer, and educator, Anthony brings over 15-years of leadership experience in arts institutions and is respected for his expertise in creating strategic partnerships and leading transformational change. As we look toward the future, we anticipate many exciting exhibitions and collaborations with other organizations. Anthony’s leadership, ambition and creativity combined with the ongoing support and commitment of MacKenzie volunteers, members, donors, sponsors, and public funders will undoubtedly provide us with an exciting and promising future for the MacKenzie Art Gallery. Message from the Executive Director & CEO While I was not present at the MacKenzie Art Gallery during the 2013/14 fiscal year, I have been in communication with the Board of Trustees, the President and my predecessor, Jeremy Morgan, for the months prior to my arrival. During two and a half years as Executive Director, Jeremy facilitated positive organizational changes in governance, policy and finance, among other accomplishments. I was pleased to communicate with him closely over the past half-year in preparing to arrive at the MacKenzie, and have found here a dynamic and professional institution with an outstanding history. The MacKenzie is cherished by the community, and it is a great honour and privilege for me to serve as its Executive Director & CEO. Principal among the many accomplishments of the Gallery, was the ongoing implementation of the Strategic Plan. The Plan’s outcomes remain our ongoing goals:

• People are engaged with the MacKenzie for a life-time; • The MacKenzie is a major hub of artistic energy for the University of Regina, the City of Regina and the Province of Saskatchewan.;

• The MacKenzie supports and contributes to the development of healthy, equitable communities; and • The MacKenzie is a model of organizational sustainability. Among these goals, the MacKenzie achieved numerous positive results over the past year. Exhibitions included the groundbreaking 7: Professional Native Indian Artists Inc., curated by Michelle LaVallee, which is currently touring nationally. Other exhibitions included the compelling Shirin Neshat: Soliloquy, and the enchanting Amalie Atkins: we live on the edge of disaster and imagine we are in a musical, curated by Timothy Long. Our education team, led by Nicolle Nugent and Ken Duczek, organized numerous programs including the Provincial Outreach Program and Creative Spaces, a pilot program for residents of long-term care homes, as well as 536 school tours which brought more than 7,300 student visitors to the Gallery. I would like to thank all the volunteers, members, donors, and sponsors of the Gallery. It is thanks to our supporters that we are able to exist. To our many partners, we are also grateful, and appreciate your enthusiasm and support. I would also like to thank our principle funders: Canada Council for the Arts, the Province of Saskatchewan, the City of Regina, and the University of Regina. It has never been a more exciting time to visit an art Gallery. Looking forward to the coming year, we will undertake planning and preparations for significant organizational transformations. We must increase and diversify our audiences, and in order to do this we must increase and diversify our revenues. I invite your participation in this transformation, and thank you for your interest and support for the past year, and the year to come.

Gala 2013 A Mid Autumn Night’s Dream Photos: Scott Goodwill

2013 Gala Art Auction: A Mid-Autumn Night’s Dream On Friday October 25, 2013 the MacKenzie Art Gallery partnered with the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame to host the annual Gala Art Auction, A Mid Autumn Night’s Dream, to raise muchneeded funds for each organization. For one night only the grand T.C. Douglas Building Lobby at the MacKenzie Art Gallery was transformed into an enchanted forest with trees lit by hundreds of twinkle lights. Nearly 400 guests took a step back in time to ancient Greece, where the artistic expression of sculptors, poets, and artisans was celebrated alongside the athletic events of the Olympic Games.

As always, the evening featured delicious food and drink, raffle prizes, a silent auction, and a live art auction. The Live Auction is always the highlight of the event, featuring works generously donated by a wide range of talented Canadian artists. Guests had the chance to bid against 350 other art and sport lovers in attendance in order to add to their own personal art collections. The evening raised over $70,000 in support of Regina’s vibrant arts, culture, and sports community.

7: Professional Native Indian Artist Incorporated In September 2013, the MacKenzie Art Gallery mounted the first comprehensive, full-scale exhibition of one of Canada’s most prolific and influential artist’s groups: the Professional Native Indian Artists Incorporated (PNIAI). 7: PNIAI brought together 120 works from 31 collections by Jackson Beardy (1944–1984), Eddy Cobiness (1933–1996), Alex Janvier (b. 1935), Norval Morrisseau (1932–2007), Daphne Odjig (b. 1919), Carl Ray (1942–1978) and Joseph Sanchez (b. 1948), including a number of recently uncovered masterworks of the period that had not been displayed for some time. The opening of this exhibition was met with an enthusiastic response with a reception attended by over 500 guests from the local, academic, and Indigenous communities; including Chief Perry Bellegarde of the Saskatchewan Federation of Indian Nations and members of the late artist Jackson Beardy’s family. Two of the three living artists, Alex Janvier and Joseph Sanchez, were in attendance for this event and participated in a panel discussion with Associate Curator Michelle LaVallee that captivated an audience of over 250 people. The exhibition drew more than 27,000 visitors between September 20, 2013 and January 12, 2014. Hundreds of individuals and families also participated in educational and community programming offered in conjunction with 7: PNIAI, including recurring family tours, school and public tours, and outreach programs, as well as special events such as film screenings. An accompanying catalogue, featuring contributions by distinguished scholars Barry Ace, Viviane Gray, Tom Hill, Michelle LaVallee, Lee-Ann Martin, Cathy Mattes, Carmen Robertson, and Joseph Sanchez, was released in May 2014 and is the MacKenzie’s largest publication to date at 360-pages. A highly celebrated exhibition, 7: PNIAI continues to receive national attention with a tour to the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Kelowna Art Gallery, McMichael Canadian Art Collection (Kleinburg, ON), Art Gallery of Windsor and Art Gallery of Alberta.

The MacKenzie: International and Local Artists The MacKenzie Art Gallery kicked off 2014 with a range of both international and local artists, including Iranian-American artist, Shirin Neshat and Saskatchewan artist, Amalie Atkins. The MacKenzie presented the dual projection video installation, Soliloquy by Shirin Neshat. This exhibition, borrowed from Musee d’art cotemporain de Montreal, is an example of the MacKenzie Art Gallery’s commitment to make the work of leading international artists available to Regina audiences. Soliloquy (1999) questions the boundaries of gender, nationality, ethnicity, and culture. The viewer follows a veiled Neshat as she wanders the streets of a vacant modernist cityscape (filmed in Albany, New York) on one screen. On the other, Neshat navigates the alleys and courtyards of a traditional Eastern cityscape (filmed in Mardin, Turkey). The images on the opposing screens set in motion a meditation on the contrasts between Western and Eastern worlds; contemporary and traditional identities, exilic and indigenous experiences. The dualities are provisionally reconciled at the end of the video through a blending of choral music and chanted prayer.

Neshat’s work was complemented by Saskatchewan filmmaker and video installation artist, Amalie Atkins. Set against the luminous landscapes of south and central Saskatchewan, her stories linger in the memory like half-remembered fairy tales. Selected by Canadian Art as one of “10 Shows We’re Looking Forward to in 2014,” this exhibition marked the first major solo presentation for the Saskatoon artist. Atkins’ cinematic gifts have been recognized in exhibitions nationally and internationally, including Oh, Canada, a landmark survey of Canadian art at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in 2012. We live on the edge of disaster and imagine we are in a musical highlights the expansion of filmmaking practice into installation by featuring four felt pavilions housing a quartet of projections. Mysterious spinning twins, riverside braid harvesters, and bicycle riding wolves are among her imaginative cast of characters. According to Atkins, her stories combine “memory, family stories, personal history, things I hear in the news, strange happenings, dreams, childhood.” The results are unforgettable sagas of grief, joy and transformation.

A renewed focus has been placed on the importance of art in health, and the positive impact it has on the wellness of individuals and the community. With growing interest from both the arts and health fields, there has never been a more opportune time to develop programs that meet these needs.

Creative Spaces

Creative Spaces, a program developed by the MacKenzie Art Gallery, provides residents of long-term care facilities and members of health support groups, the opportunity to express themselves through art. Activities are structured using an “Open Studio” model, allowing the participants to define the activities based on their individual interests and capabilities. In a judgement-free environment, participants are encouraged to find their own unique mark-making process, while focusing on the physical skills available to them. Initial findings were overwhelmingly positive, so much so that the demand to bring the program to other organizations grew beyond the initital scope of the pilot project. Having witnessed the impact of the activities on the participants and the potential for expanding within the community, the Gallery allocated additional resources to continue this ground-breaking work. This initiative has reinforced the profound effect the creative process has on improving people’s lives, and the importance of supporting the unique artistic voice in everyone. The power of art plays a vital role in enriching people’s lives and offering a universal means of communication. Having long offered programs that reach beyond its doors, the Creative Spaces Pilot Program connected with an underserved population, and allowed the Gallery to gain valuable insight into how to further meet the needs of our communities.

New Acquisitions to the MacKenzie Collection KC Adams The MacKenzie Art Gallery is committed to building an in-depth collection of work by contemporary Canadian artists, with a special focus on works by Indigenous artists. In November 2013, the MacKenzie acquired several artworks by KC Adams, an artist of MĂŠtis heritage currently living in Winnipeg, Manitoba, including Cyborg Hybrid KC, Cyborg Hybrid Niki, Power Peyote Stitch, and iPad is Cree Floral. Adamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally, including iPad is Cree Floral which is touring in the Vancouver Art Gallery organized and nationally touring exhibition, Beat Nation: Art, Hip Hop and Aboriginal Culture. Here, an iPad case and the electrical cord from a MacBook Pro are re-envisioned by Adams and decorated with designs inspired by traditional beaded leatherwork. More specifically, iPad is Cree Floral features floral designs from the Plains Cree.

Gifts from June Whitney A generous donation from June Whitney was made to the Gallery this year. The gift included work by Jimmy Inaarulik Kadyulik, Janet Kigusiuq and Henry Quallialu Quissa. This significant contribution enables the Gallery to present a deeper look into Inuit artistic practices, and build on the work we have done through other Inuit Collections donated to the Gallery. Furthermore, this work will help inform a representative collection of Inuit art from various regions of Canada, including northern Quebec.

An Outstanding Contribution from David & Veronica Thauberger Renowned Canadian painter, printmaker and ceramist, David Thauberger and his wife, Veronica, have made yet another distinguished donation to the Gallery’s Permanent Collection. The recent gift of 55 works of art is of great significance, not only due to the number of works gifted, but also because of the diversity among the pieces. This generous donation builds upon the Thauberger’s previous donations of folk art, contemporary Saskatchewan and Western Canadian art, and California Funk art, by expanding the representation of different styles and movements to include British pop, New York modern and conceptual art, Chicago Imagism, and Inuit art; all of which have been critical to David’s development as an artist. In addition to being an artist of national reputation, David Thauberger is also a collector of considerable ambition. Over the

years, David and Veronica have donated a substantial portion of this collection to public institutions; since 1986, the MacKenzie alone has amassed 94 works of art from the Thauberger’s. With an unwavering passion for art and admirable generosity, patrons of the MacKenzie Art Gallery such as, David and Veronica, provide a strong foundation for the Gallery to continue to offer outstanding experiences in the visual arts, while fostering Regina’s cultural vibrancy. In early 2015, the MacKenzie Art Gallery will open David’s first major retrospective exhibition, David Thauberger: Road Trips and Other Diversions. Co-organized by the Mendel Art Gallery (Saskatoon) and the MacKenzie, this major nationally touring exhibition presents a dynamic installation examining key themes and working processes, developed throughout Thauberger’s more than 40 years as a maker and thinker.

50 Years of Volunteering! The MacKenzie Gallery Volunteers (MGV) celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2013, closing the year with an impressive list of achievements and contributions. 4,435 volunteer hours were contributed this year by the MGV in support of exhibitions, programs, and events. Each member involved with the MGV, contributes enthusiasm and an invaluable sense of commitment to Gallery. Together, the MGV bridges the Gallery and the community through programs such as Travelling Art, the Enrichment Program, and all Gallery initiatives. Travelling Art, a program founded and organized by the MGV, also celebrated itsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; 50th anniversary in 2013. Touching the lives of many students, Travelling Art delivers art to classrooms throughout Regina. The MGV have developed an exemplary art appreciation program which in 2013, visited 27 Catholic and public schools. Thanks to the financial support of local school boards, these art exhibitions remain in the schools for several months, providing students with the opportunity to view the art at their convenience. Additionally, teachers are able to use the MGV collection as a springboard to lessons in their arts education and language arts programs.

Enbridge Young Artists Project In 1997, the MacKenzie Art Gallery launched the Young Artists Project as a way to make visual art more accessible to inner city youth. For the past 15 years the Young Artists Project has positively impacted the lives of thousands of youth in our community through interactive workshops and visits to the MacKenzie. “With Enbridge’s generosity, the MacKenzie Art Gallery is able to offer enhanced visuals arts programming to inner-city youth, celebrating the diversity of our city while highlighting the ways in which arts and culture can have a profound effect in strengthening our communities, ” said Anthony Kiendl, MacKenzie Art Gallery Executive Director & CEO This year, the Enbridge Young Artists Project focused on two specific exhibitions, Amalie Atkins: we live on the edge of disaster and imagine we are in a musical and Mary Pratt. Throughout the year, Art Instructors developed programming inspired by and connected to the themes in these two exhibitions, as well as workshops related to identity, community, and the exploration of materials. In addition, artist, Melanie Rose delivered in-school workshops, providing students with the opportunity to explore fibre art and engage with a working local artist. Students from Sacred Heart, Kitchener, and Mother Theresa schools visited the Gallery throughout the year, allowing students to draw direct connections between their workshop experiences and current exhibitions. The culmination of these experiences has allowed the web of relationships between school, student, the Gallery, and Art Instructor to deepen and grow, ultimately strengthening student’s self-awareness, confidence, and sense of community.

1. Basis of preparation The summary financial statements are derived from the audited financial statements for the year ended March 31, 2014 prepared in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-forprofit organizations. The preparation of the summary financial statements requires management to determine the information that needs to be reflected in the summary financial statements so that they are consistent, in all material respects, with or represent a fair summary of the audited financial statements. The summary financial statements have been prepared by management using the following criteria: i) Whether information in the summary financial statements is in agreement with the related information in the audited financial statements, and ii) Whether, in all material respects, the summary financial statements contain the information necessary to avoid obscuring matters disclosed in the related financial statements, including the notes thereto.

Cracking Open the MacKenzie Vault to Celebrate 60 Years of Art The MacKenzie Art Gallery celebrated its 60th anniversary this year. To commemorate the myriad of memories throughout the past six decades, the MacKenzie mounted the exhibition, How We filled the Vault: Sixty Years of Collecting, the largest display of the Permanent Collection since the MacKenzie opened its doors at our current location in 1990. Featuring approximately 250 works from a collection of over 4,000, this exhibition told the story of the Permanent Collection’s evolution over the past 60 years. A follow-up to the highly successful Ruins to Renaissance: The Rise of the MacKenzie Bequest, the exhibition focused on six decades of purchases and donations that have built on the founding bequest made to the Gallery by Norman MacKenzie.

The exhibition looked at collecting activity decade by decade with two objectives. First, it highlighted the acquisitions that have come to define the collection, from its first purchase in 1957 of Harold Town’s The Tower of Babbling, to works by luminaries such as Lawren Harris, Pablo Picasso, Ed Kienholz, Bob Boyer, Dorothy Knowles, and Joe Fafard, among others. Extended wall labels provided further context demonstrating how the acquisition of key works of art established new directions or deepened existing holdings, and how they helped put the MacKenzie on the cultural map. Second, the exhibition provided insights into the contributions of individual directors, curators, and donors. Illustrated panels delved into the collecting vision and interests of the people who shaped the MacKenzie Permanent Collection and gave it its multifaceted character.
