EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE scenes at the MacKenzie. I invite you to join us for our Open House on September 30th, part of the national Culture Days initiative. This is your chance to peek behind closed doors, including the vault containing more than 4,000 pieces from the permanent collection. In the coming months we look forward to bringing you even more behind the scenes content for the myMacKenzie app available for your iPhone and iPad. This year we are excited to present Big Bang at the MacKenzie, our annual gala art auction in support of creative experiences for families and youth. Get your tickets today for what is sure to be an unforgettable evening and sold-out event! As we approach the MacKenzie’s 60th anniversary year, we continue to gain insight from our community on your ideas for the future of the Gallery. Your feedback helps us offer outstanding experiences in the visual arts for our community. As we head into our fall season of exhibitions and programs I want to congratulate the MacKenzie Gallery Volunteers on their 50th anniversary. To each of our volunteers over the past fifty years, we offer our profound gratitude. You have made the MacKenzie the great gallery it is today! This fall we are proud to host Carl Beam, organized by the National Gallery of Canada. This amazing exhibition brings together the masterpieces of one of Canada’s most vital forces in contemporary Aboriginal art. You’ll also find a compelling mix of works from the permanent collection on view in the exhibitions Mindfulness and the Creative Spirit and Big Bang Theory.
None of this would be possible without the support of our funders, and the many generous sponsors, donors and volunteers who have invested in the future of the MacKenzie. On behalf of the Board and staff, we look forward to seeing you back at the Gallery. We just know you’ll enjoy your next MacKenzie experience.

CARL BEAM September 1 to November 18, 2012 Meet the Curator & Opening Reception Friday, September 28, 7:30 pm, Free Admission Screening of Aakideh: The Art & Legacy of Carl Beam Sunday, September 30, 2 pm, Free Admission Carl Beam (1943-2005) was a powerful, internationally acclaimed contemporary Canadian artist of Anishinaabe descent. In 1986, Beam’s The North American Iceberg became known as the first work by a First Nations artist to be purchased by the National Gallery of Canada for the collection of contemporary art, thus opening the door for a new generation of First Nations artists to enter. The exhibition covers the physical diversity of Beam’s works while exploring his investigation into the metaphysical aspects of western and Indigenous cultures. The exhibition is organized around five main themes, including: The Columbus Project, an immense body of work which challenges historically dominant assumptions and re-examines the meaning of Columbus’ arrival in North America and its long-term repercussions for the Indigenous peoples of the Americas; Plant Communication, Margins: Food / Shelter and The Whale of Our Being touch on Beam’s study of the relationship between humans and their environment; and Crossroads, a meditation on fame and celebrity that was the last series of pieces Beam worked on. Beam is renowned for working with photography and collage in an aesthetic style that was more akin to the expressive layering of American pop artist Robert Rauschenberg than the traditional forms of Anishinaabek “Woodland School” painters such as Norval Morrisseau (1932-2007). However, Beam’s art engages his Anishinaabek traditions through its recognition of the important role of dreams, the place of spirit helpers, and the lessons of his Aboriginal ancestry. At the same time, it builds intellectual bridges between the philosophical thinking of Western and Anishinaabek traditions. Featuring 48 of Beam’s most remarkable works, this exhibition is an opportunity to view a selection of his large-scale paintings, ceramics, constructions, and video that cover his entire artistic career. This exhibition is accompanied by an extensive 140-page catalogue, Carl Beam: The Poetics of Being, available for purchase in the Gallery Shop. Organized by the National Gallery of Canada

MINDFULNESS AND THE CREATIVE SPIRIT September 8, 2012 to January 6, 2013
According to author Jon Kabat-Zinn, mindfulness is “the awareness that emerges through paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally to the unfolding of experiences moment by moment.” We are so lost in the myriad worlds of instant information, everadvancing technology and the isolating entertainment of social networking that most days mindfulness seems a million megabytes away. It is far easier to tune in to electronic diversions than to become aware of our thoughts and actions in the present moment. Mindfulness and the Creative Spirit examines art production that embodies principles such as living in harmony with oneself and the world and participation in a process of observation, self-inquiry and mindful action. This opportunity for self-reflection will include step-bystep guidance in exploring mindfulness through a process of looking deeply at works of art from the MacKenzie’s permanent collection. This is an opportunity to begin observing your own emotions and to be respectfully encouraged to express yourself creatively. School Tours presented by SaskTel

BIG BANG THEORY UNRAVELLING THE MYSTERIES OF ART, SCIENCE AND FANTASY October 27, 2012 to March 31, 2013
The success of the television series The Big Bang Theory points to a growing interest in “nerd culture,” a unique fusion of hard science and high fantasy. This exhibition explores the trend through an adventurous mix of works from the MacKenzie’s permanent collection. From robotics to lasers, from Superman to space toys, geek chic has arrived at the MacKenzie. Since the time of Leonardo da Vinci, artists have felt free to make art by day while tinkering with science projects by night. Both art and science are powered by curiosity and a desire to see “what happens if…” A number of the works generate the same pleasure that a scientist might take in an elegantly designed experiment, or an engineer in a piece of new technology. Murray Favro, John Noestheden, Richard Prince, Ron McLellan, and Kim Adams each adopt a scientific or technological paradigm to make work of beautiful intelligence. For other artists, the shapes and structures of science are a direct source of inspiration. A hidden universe is revealed in the undersea pods of Ying-Yueh Chuang, the galaxies of Martha Cole, and the cosmic geometry of Winston Leathers. Ying-Yueh Chuang, it blooms on the day.... #1, 2004, ceramic, plexiglass rod, 40 x 40 x 34 cm. MacKenzie Art Gallery, University of Regina Collection, 2010, purchased with the financial support of the Canada Council for the Arts Acquisition Assistance Program. A permanent collection exhibition organized by the MacKenzie Art Gallery with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, the Saskatchewan Arts Board, and the City of Regina Arts Advisory Committee.

TROY COULTERMAN: EVERYDAY ANOMALIES September 29 to October 14, 2012 Opening Reception Friday, October 5, 6 - 8:30 pm, Free Admission Everyday Anomalies is the thesis exhibition by Troy Coulterman, an artist from Arnprior, Ontario currently studying in the MFA program at the University of Regina. Troy has been the recipient for several awards and grants from such organizations as the Ontario Arts Council and the Sculptors Society of Canada. Troy’s influences are primarily pop culture and television and how they affect our lives. His work starts from our confusing daily happenings during which neural wires occasionally get crossed or misfired.

JORGE SANDOVAL: PEEPHOLE October 27 to November 12, 2012 PEEPHOLE explores the interaction between the spectator, video art installation and the space of the gallery. The audience will become an interactive artifact within the performance, perceiving themselves as part of the space and sensing the synchronicity of the body with the space and the performance. Larger than life images and video installation charged with sexual tension will rhetorically break the boundaries that the spectators might experience when activating their own subjectivity, desires and cultural backgrounds. Please Note: This exhibition includes nudity and sexually explicit content and may not be appropriate for all ages.
TREVOR GRANT: COME AND SEE. AND I SAW November 17 to December 9, 2012
Come And See. And I Saw imagines the internal chaos when spiritual faith collides with altered states of consciousness. A boy experiences joy/terror, life/death through the seduction of the angel figure. Rather than an angel bastardized on the altar of pop culture and New Age spiritualties, this angel manifests inside deeply embedded rituals at the crossroad of the sacred and the profane. The exhibition is a hybrid of video art installation, experimental documentary and theatre.

MacKenzie Gallery Volunteers Celebrate 50 Years of Travelling Art! Learn about current volunteer opportunities at mackenzieartgallery.ca
The Travelling Art Program began with a group of volunteers who were passionate about inspiring a love and appreciation of art in young children. Since the first group of docents visited Regina schools in 1963, the volunteers have interacted with thousands of grade five students each year, seeking to enrich their appreciation and knowledge of art. Travelling Art is the heart of the MacKenzie Gallery Volunteers’ work with kids and arts education. When the Travelling Art Program visits a school, pictures of art work are displayed for a two-week period prior to a volunteer docent visitng the grade five classes to discuss the art. Each of the three available exhibits consist of eight to ten reproductions of “The Classics in Art.” The originals of these works can be found in major art galleries around the world. The MacKenzie Gallery Volunteers receive an annual grant from the Regina Public and Catholic School Boards for the delivery of Travelling Art and provide additional support by arranging for transportation of the exhibits from school to school. With an increasing number of requests from schools, the MacKenzie Gallery Volunteers are always looking for more docents. These volunteers make an important contribution to the enrichment of arts education of children and will also find their involvement greatly rewarding as well.
