Message from Andrea Wagner, President, Board of Trustees

I discovered the MacKenzie Art Gallery in the late 1980’s, when I was a student at the University of Regina. As a young woman at the time, I can vividly remember being touched by many of my experiences such as Jana Sterbak’s Vanitas: Flesh Dress for an Albino Anorectic (more commonly known as “the meat dress”) and Pat Steir’s work, drawn directly on the gallery walls. Of course, I would also while away time picking through the Gallery Shop. In 2011/12, I had more great experiences at the MacKenzie. Jack Sures: Tactile Desires was stunning and 13 Coyotes: Edward Poitras was clever and thought provoking. Since my youth I have begun to contemplate what it means to live in Saskatchewan, and I love that the Gallery reflects that back to me in new and unexpected ways, all of the time. The U of R Bachelor of Fine Arts exhibition was remarkable; it was inspiring to see the excitement of the young artists at having their work displayed at the MacKenzie. I continue to spend time, and now money, in the Gallery Shop. Our annual fundraising events, the Gala Art Auction and BAZAART brought us together as a community for fun, for art, and to support the Gallery. The past year has been an eventful one for the Board of Trustees. In August we further developed MacKenzie Forward, the Gallery’s strategic plan, and in December we said goodbye to Stuart Reid, who left for a job closer to family, and welcomed our new Executive Director, Jeremy Morgan. Jeremy’s work with the Board and staff is helping us to create more value for you, the public, at the MacKenzie Art Gallery. We are here to engage, entertain and inspire you and we want to keep improving and surpass your expectations. I would like to thank all of the volunteers who contributed to the success of the MacKenzie in 2011/12 by sitting on committees, planning events, working in the Gallery Shop, offering educational opportunities to our youth, and much more. Thank you also to our Champions and Donors who help us create a unique MacKenzie Art Gallery experience for the people of Saskatchewan to enjoy time and again. The MacKenzie is your gallery, just as it is mine. I hope to see you there soon!

Message from Jeremy Morgan, Executive Director

It’s not easy to summarize 2011/12 at the MacKenzie Art Gallery. A year filled with exciting programs and major exhibitions also included some big changes! Beginning as Interim Executive Director in January 2012, I have been asked by the Board of Trustees to extend my time at the MacKenzie as your Executive Director until December 2013. During this time together we will complete and fully implement the strategic planning work which began almost two years ago. At the MacKenzie we have embraced strategic planning as part of our culture as we grapple with the serious impacts of the many changes taking place in the arts and culture, public education and nonprofit sectors. Like any investor, our public and private supporters are asking for well articulated value in return for their support. Happily, the MacKenzie has much to offer the diverse communities we are a part of. To that end, we will focus on achieving four major goals: Creating a lifetime of engagement with each of you. Being a major hub of artistic energy for the University of Regina, the City and the Province. Supporting and contributing to the development of healthy, equitable communities. Being a model of organizational sustainability. These are by no means modest ambitions, but ones worthy of a place with the history and potential of the MacKenzie. The coming year holds exciting prospects for the MacKenzie and the community. Everything we do will be focused on you, the visitor, and how you want to experience the MacKenzie. As we work toward growing diverse audiences, we are committed to putting our visitors at the centre of the Gallery, truly imagining the visitor experience every step of the way. See you at the MacKenzie!
