Jeremy Morgan Just over two and a half years ago I was approached by the MacKenzie Board to come to the Gallery for a few months while it hired a new Executive Director. Well, that time has finally arrived and, like many, I am so pleased that Anthony Kiendl is coming back to Regina. The MacKenzie is a gallery with a great history and hugely promising future. It deserves a director who has ambition and imagination and, with your support, is willing to test his leadership and managerial skills in creating a new future for the MacKenzie: someone who offers a clear and compelling vision. My own experience here has been personally enriching, challenging and rewarding. Fundamental changes in institutions like ours can often take years to take hold, but right now a number of changes are taking root in the MacKenzie: a renewed emphasis on engagement with the visitor; a new confidence that we have much to offer to our community; and, a realization that we also need to look outward for our inspiration. Having been here for How We Filled the Vault: Sixty Years of Collecting and 7: Professional Native Indian Artists Inc. exhibitions, along with a variety of others drawn from our Permanent Collection, I have a deep appreciation for the public value of the Gallery and what it takes to make these things happen. Our staff are dedicated, highly professional and extremely creative. The Board, members and volunteers are equally committed to the value of a major public gallery and the importance of art in enriching the lives of individuals and communities. All have been of immense help to me and together with our partners and funders, public and private, will ensure that the MacKenzie is an increasingly important part of our community for many years to come.

Jeremy Morgan Executive Director, Departing May 2014

Anthony Kiendl Greetings! It is with great pleasure that I join the MacKenzie Art Gallery this Spring. At a recent talk I attended by the influential art writer, Boris Groys, he stated—perhaps provocatively to those charged with the care of a museum’s contents—that the most interesting things in art galleries are the people. The traditional role of art museums is transforming in relation to changes in art, society, technology, and economies. It has perhaps never been a more exciting time to visit an art gallery. No longer dedicated exclusively to the preservation of cultural heritage through the care and collecting of objects, art galleries are increasingly platforms for activities and events: talks, performances, screenings, conferences, parties, concerts, and more. We have not abandoned the collecting of art— but rather expanded the range and scope of our responsibilities—and the ways that we share. Exhibitions themselves may now be considered events that tell stories, much like a book or a film. Art galleries are dynamic sites for sharing information and producing new knowledge. They are places of speculation, provocation, excitement, solace, leisure and more. Art nourishes and strengthens our lives socially, intellectually, emotionally and spiritually. I invite you to visit this amazing community resource again and again. Every new visit to the MacKenzie will be different from the last. I look forward to meeting you and sharing ideas. Please join us as we undertake an exciting transformation of Saskatchewan’s largest and most compelling art institution.
