Art Effects. Goal: To design an arts center to be located at 1010 Lincoln Mall in Lincoln, Nebraska. Facilities for both the performing and fine arts are included in the center as well as a coffee shop (Art Latte) and a startup office (Art Works). Concept: The concept behind Art Effects is the ripple effect. The ripple effect starts at the center with a single drop and ripples outward causing a chain reaction. Being in the symbolic center of the state, Art Effects will create a ripple effect for arts education for youth. Design: The concept is achieved by a fluid design with a spiral staircase wrapped around a glowing orange column acting as the central “drop” of the ripple. The color palette is derived from the mural placed behind the reception desk, a Pop Art version of the “Labor of Hearts” mural located at the Capital Building just down the street. Materials and furniture selections continue the Pop Art look throughout the center.

Lazuli. Goal: To design a high-end cosmetic store for women ages 39-59. Brand: Lazuli. Lapis lazuli, a deep blue opaque gemstone with gold flecks, is a gemstone that ancient Egyptians valued over gold. In powder form it creates an ultra-marine pigment that Cleopatra used for eye shadow. The deep color around the eyes protected the eyes from the sun off of the desert sands. The shape of their bold eyeliner inspired Lazuli’s logo design. Design: The history behind the lapis lazuli inspired the design. Diagonal lines pulled from the logo create movement and excitement through out the store and direct customers to specific areas. The color palette is drawn from the gemstone. The deep blue provides contrast to the bright white space with gold accents that give the space a luxurious feeling.

Midas Institute. Goal: Design an office with specific spatial requirements for the Midas Institute, a funding agency located in the Inland Steel building in Chicago, while incorporating the owner’s art collection. Design: This mid-century modern office features an open plan that allows for the sunlight to filter into all the spaces. Mostly white walls bring focus to the art while blue and red accents found through out the space add a layer of color. Dark wood planks are used on specific walls and ceilings to give dimension and warmth to the office.

32 Dental Studio.

Goal: To design a dentist office located in Biltmore, North Carolina. Concept: The concept of 32 Dental Studio came from looking at the proportions and properties of the human mouth and the idea of the perfect smile. The number ‘32’ was derived from the number of teeth adults have. Design: In order to achieve this concept, a grid translating the proportions and properties of the mouth was created. This became the floor plan. Materials were selected that symbolized perfect teeth: bright whites and luminous lighting. Because of the beautiful location in the Biltmore Forest, large windows were used to frame exterior views as art.

SQP Italiano. Goal: To design an Italian restaurant in downtown Omaha. Concept: SQP Italiano (Simplicity, Quality, Passion) is a restaurant based on authentic Italian cooking. Three factors are what make Italian food so delicious. Simplicity: Italian food is known for its simplicity in the way it is prepared and the use of few ingredients. Quality: Italians value quality over quantity when it comes to ingredients, meaning each dish is always fresh and of the best quality. Passion: Italian chefs have a passion for the food they create, which is why every restaurant varies in flavor and style. Design: This concept is applied to the restaurant using few quality materials and furnishings imported from Italy while creating a modern and simplistic take on classic Italian architecture.
