KEEPING UP WITH YOUR NEW YEARS RESOLUTION RELINA D'CRUZ - STAFF WRITER
A 2019 started off spectacular, didn’t it? New beginnings – motivation and drive interconnect resulting in New Year’s resolutions. The most common one “This year, I want to be healthy and fit. I’m going to the gym everyday”. Well, what’s stopping you? Why didn’t you start earlier? First step to achieving your goal is set a realistic one. Don’t try and get ahead of yourself. Know your capabilities. Know your schedule. Don’t try and allocate more time than you possibly can. It seems like people become so excited about setting goals that they want to make “big, bold steps” to achieve it. But that may not be wise. Take baby steps! You don’t just wake up one day and say “today, I’m going to be a millionaire!” You must plan for it. You must be consistent. You must be stringent with expenses and wise with investments. You must rise before others do. Sacrifice sleep for ideas. Every little step counts. If you can demonstrate consistency in attaining your goals, it will translate into the achievement of the goals. Even if it’s as simple as deep breathing. Did you know that you could strain your mind and body in an attempt to achieve a goal, which can have long-term impacts on your physical and mental health? But if you work slowly, you can build stamina. You learn more about yourself. If possible, start before the clock hits 12 am on the 31st of December. Often, people feel the pressure to begin when New Year begins. I can relate. That’s why it may be important to start before the New Year, around December. Resolutions aren’t just goals. It calls for a change of mindset and it takes time to harvest and adjust to that mindset. Be smart about it. This is your well being. Keep up with your New Year’s Resolutions! "

TRAVEL BUG: THINGS TO DO IN THE 6IX BY ERIC SADHU One very common New Year’s resolution among many people is to expand their world travels, as soon as the clock strikes midnight. But, a lot of uncontrollable factors deter them from having this goal come to life. You can start small, with this list of things to do in our local city, known as the 6ix (shoutout to drake!). One very simple start is the downtown area, which is home to many iconic landmarks and attractions known across the world, like the CN Tower, Ripley’s Aquarium, the Eaton Centre, and Nathan Philips Square. There are also various picturesque areas to fulfill your photographic needs, like Graffiti Alley, the Distillery District, or Casa Loma, to channel urban, rural, and ancient sceneries. Regardless of the time of year, downtown Toronto is filled with activities to do all year round, in which there is never a dull moment to have! Toronto is also home to another mini-region, which inhabits the traditions of West Europe, specifically Italy, through the area known as Little Italy! You can find this area between Dufferin Grove Park and Trinity Bellwoods Park. Little Italy provides a truly unique experience, with its offerings of many authentic restaurants to enjoy plenty of dishes, from pastas like Spaghetti, and Gnocchi, to desserts like Cannelloni and Gelato. To even further immerse yourself in the Italian culture, Little Italy also has their Italian Walk of Fame, honoring 25 famous Italians across various fields, as well as The Royal Cinema, which screens popular, small-budget, and Italian movies to truly introduce you to a whole new world. PAGE 4
TRAVEL BUG: THINGS TO DO IN THE 6IX Toronto is recognized as one of the most multicultural city in the world, in which there are widespread areas that embrace the traditions of various cultures! For those who have aspired towards visiting Asia in their future, they can catch a glimpse of the culture in Chinatown, Toronto, located around the Kensington Market and the Art Gallery of Ontario. Chinatown is host to a variety of Chinese, Japanese, and Vietnamese shops and restaurants that deliver on traditional dishes such as Dim-Sum, Pad-Thai, and Sushi. Not to mention all of the shops with their “Kawaii” merchandise! If Chinatown is a bit distant for some, there exists an alternative, where they can witness the same cultures across Yonge Street and Shepperd Avenue East, home to many KoreanBBQ restaurants. You don’t have to break your bank to be able to travel and explore new destinations, in which our

city of Toronto is a representation of the saying “We have the world at our fingertips!"
WEIRD NEW YEAR TRADITION
WRITTEN BY AMESHA GRAY New Year is the time of celebration and thanksgiving. First, it is a mark that you have lived to celebrate another year and second, it is a way to start fresh in a new year. New Year’s is a national holiday that is recognized and celebrated by many across the world. While, New Year’s is celebrated globally, the means of celebrate is different, well weird. In North America, the New Year is celebrated at a bar or restaurant with alcoholic beverages, with fireworks, partying, staying home and watching television or going to church. Here are four weird traditions for celebrating the New Year seen across the world!
BROKEN PLATES In Denmark, people celebrate the new years by breaking all the unused dishes by throwing them on the doors of all their friends and family. Unlike in North America where broken dishes symbolizes anger, broken dishes in the Denmark is a way to show affection by wishing their love ones luck in the new year. The more broken plates you have at your front door, the more luck you will get in the new year. This celebrate do not stop there for the Danish, they celebrate with champagne and marzipan ring cake at midnight.
BURN A SCARECROW The Ecuadorians celebrate the New Year by burning an effigy of politicians, iconic figures or someone they hate in the streets. Out with the old, in with the new is the tradition in Ecuador. The use of fire to burn effigy symbolizes the cleansing the “bad blood” for the New Year, it serves to erase negativity before the start of a new year. Round Things In the Philippines, they believed that everything should be round because it signifies prosperity, money (“pera”), and happiness. They fill their pockets with coins because they believed that it would bring more wealth. The Filipinos also celebrate with loud noises to drive evil spirits away making room for the good spirits to enter their homes. PAGE 6 •
TANKANAKUY (“WHEN THE BLOOD IS BOILING”) FESTIVAL his is a traditional festival that takes place in Peru. The festival is where Peruvian fist fight to settle disputes built up over the years. The fights are to resolve conflicts, getting your aggression and frustration in the open out in the public. The purpose of the festival is to start the New Year off with a new slate, no aggression and conflict. The festival finishes with music and dancing celebrating a new begins.
JAPAN The Japanese New Year’s tradition is unique in that they ring a bell 108 times before midnight on the December 31st. No, it is not a sign of obsessive-compulsive disorder but rather the bell is rung one hundred and eight times to get rid of the sins of the previous year in order to start the new year.

TAKING OUT THE TRASH WRITTEN SARAN DHINDSA It’s that time of the year again, when we start all these resolutions and attempts to leave our bad habits in 2018, while bringing good vibes into 2019. But, there are times when we fuck up, and we bring THE fuck up into 2019. So sit down, and buckle up, because I’m going to provide you all with a little TED talk of my own called “how to take out the trash.” Now, this may seem ruthless, but I have a purpose behind all this. Sometimes we’re the Becks and our BFFs are the Peaches and Joes. They’re malevolent and we deserve better than enduring their manipulative tendencies. Because while exercising and eating vegan may seem to be a solution, the people around you can have negative effects on your ability to reach your “best self. ” Relationships: Let me set the scene: You have been dating for some time now, but things have changed (you may have changed) and you just don’t need this person in your life. Alternatively, they may be bringing you down like an anchor. So, you got to cut them loose – and this is how you’re going to do it. First, invite them out with you, sort of how you would anyway. But here’s the kicker – you have to tell them you’re breaking up in the beginning of the conversation. The dawning realization that someone’s chucking you is not great, so you want to make sure your both on the same page, and sometimes, they might be thinking the same thing (which turns this into an amicable split,
so long as no one throws anything). I know it sounds harsh, but sometimes you can be with someone, but they can be a bit of a dick to you, and if they’re unsupportive or untrusting of you, that becomes added stress that you don’t need. Always be direct in this conversation. For example, if there’s something they did or said that really pushed you to the point of wanting to break up with them, be honest about it. That way it’s off your chest and the other person knows its something they need to be aware of in their next relationship. For inspiration on what to say, try looking to Ariana Grande’s “thank u, next.” PAGE 8
FRIENDSHIP Sometimes you’re friends with someone, and you might love them with all your heart, but they just don’t seem to give you the same level of respect and patience you give them. They might be the drama that you don’t need in your life, or they might be the bubblewrap you need to free yourself from. Don’t get me wrong, we all love a friend who’s willing to take care of us when we need it, but they also need to be willing to provide space when we desire it (and this road goes both ways). It’s harder to break up with a friend, especially if you and them run around in the same circles, but it’s worse if you continue to endure parts of their personality that you don’t need. For example, if you have a friend that is constantly berating you for fun, you don’t need that person, especially if they don’t show you any sympathy – ever. People are like a cast die, you might think you can see all their faces, but there’s always one that is hidden. Oftentimes, it’s that face that will hurt you the most. So when you sit down to talk to this person, make sure they know why you feel the way you do, and if you want to take a second chance on them, then that’s your choice, but don’t feel forced if you still feel like you need space

ADULTING 101 - IT'S TIME TO GROW UP WRITTEN BY ALYSSA OFFENHEIM
About a month ago, I overheard my mother remind my sister that she needed to renew her passport. At first, I didn’t think much of it. But as my mother continued to remind her week after week to organize herself and head to the passport office before school started up again, I started to ponder the situation. After all, millennial get quite a bit of flack for being lazy, unmotivated, and incapable. Was my sister embodying the stereotype? Are we really in trouble once we can afford to move out of our houses, when we have to remember to water the plants and finish paperwork on time all on our own? AI don’t think my sister possesses any of those nasty characteristics that our generation is labelled with, and I truthfully do think that millennial are the subject of some ridiculous labels. However, I believe that our elders have sheltered us from the burdens of adulting – is anybody else living rent-free? - And have accustomed us to being reminded to call the doctor and book our own tire changes. With that being said, perhaps 2019 is the year that our generation takes a hold of a little more independence. After all, we’re going to have to apply for a mortgage or clean toilets one day or another. Here are a few things you can strive to do in 2019 to feel like a little bit more of an adult:

appointments and bill payments. - Review said bills and call providers that mischarge you. - Build a line of credit by putting everyday purchases on your credit card. - Spend Friday night working on your end of semester paper so you can have a wine night with your pals during exam season to distress.
These are just a few ways that you can reverse our horrible stereotype and feel more on top of your commitments. Even more, these suggestions will leave you feeling accomplished and productive, which we all know builds self-confidence and reduces anxieties. 2019 is the year, folks – it’s time to show off our ADULT!

GET IN SHAPE THE FUN WAY TONIA GENETE
Everybody dreams of that perfect toned body or aspire to a more active lifestyle. One of the most common resolutions is to get in shape or lose weight. Unfortunately, the bubble bursts quick and you’re back to being a couch potato, binge-watching a show, and eating chips. No judgment here, I do it, you do it, we all do it. The reason why most people can’t keep up with this goal is not that they don’t have time (if you want something you make time for it), its because its boring. Routine is not for everyone. If you are one of those people, here are some fun activities and classes that will contribute to your purpose:
1. If you live on campus or are often at York, you can definitely squeeze a workout in at Tait Mckenzie. They offer a variety of classes such as yoga, Muay Thay, Aquatics, Zumba, and many more. Some classes require a membership and some don’t if you want full access to all the classes, I suggest purchasing a class pass for the semester which costs around $55. There are more details and deals on their website. https://reconline.yorkulions.ca/ 2. Dancing is a fun way to drop some pounds, shape your body, and it also helps with posture and selfdiscipline.
Only thirty minutes of dancing burns roughly 200 calories, depending on the genre of dance and intensity. York Lions Dance Club offers weekly five dollar drop-in dance classes in various styles and difficulties. Let’s get jiggy and shimmy some pounds! @yorklionsdanceclub 3. If you want to dance in a more professional environment and also make a trip downtown, the Underground Dance Centre offers a variety of classes catered to you by professionals. This month they have a deal which consists of 4 classes for only $19.After class, you can go enjoy a cup of tea or coffee at a nearby cafe. https://www.theundergroundd ance.com/drop-in PAGE 12
GET IN SHAPE THE FUN WAY! 4. Have you ever dreamed of working out while sitting down? Well, I have the perfect class for you. At Body Love gym you can now box while squatting on Bosu balls. You can choose to do two classes for only twenty seven dollars to see if you like it. They offer a mixture of classes and have a lot of varying pricing packages. Also, did I mention that they have their own cafe? It doesn’t get any better than that. https://bodyloveinc.com/thegym/#schedule 5. “I believe I can fly, I believe I can touch the sky.” You can now actually accomplish that with aerial yoga at AntiGravity Fitness. This method of practicing yoga focuses and relaxes the mind through visualization as the body floats through a series of “gentle gyro-kinetic motions.” This class is suitable for anyone who wants to be healthier and have fun. Have your first tryout class for only $15, bring a friend to and float in the air together. https://sorastudio.one/pages/classes
Last but not least get involved with Mac and participate in their drop-in events, it’s free and you get to enjoy it with all your peers and the council. We feature all the sports events happening each month in our sports section, now you know when, where and what so move it!

can be put off until the dust settles.
Make that a priority this month. Be a bit selfish. You deserve it. Gemini: Your energy has been so electrified and your mind has been so dreamy in recent weeks that it might not even register that this is a brand-new year with brand-new possibilities. You are in a groove accomplishing a lot and living in the moment. But great things are possible for you this month, Gemini, and making a list of your priorities would be beneficial. That way (especially if you do it early in the month), you will have a great plan that will make you more efficient and effective. Late in the month, you may experience fallout with someone close to you.
Cancer: You can be very indecisive at times, Moonchild. That does not mean you are wishy-washy or that you are always wavering on your convictions. Which can make decisions far more complicated and very difficult. This month, you may face a real challenge with a big decision. This may have a romantic element to it. You know that whatever you do could have a big impact on you, and also on someone else. Just be sure that the choice you take is based on what is best for you. Anything else will only be prolonging the inevitable.
Leo: January will bring its shares of ups and downs on the job or with a personal project that proves to be more challenging than predicted. But rest assured that if you don't let it wear you down or wear you out, you will be fine. This is something you can resolve before the end of the month. A close family member could stir up excitement (if not trouble) around the middle of the month, or later. This person is known for dramatic hijinks, but it is growing tiresome. The best thing you can do if this happens is to steer clear and ignore it. After all, this person is drawn to the drama. Without the attention, this will go away. This is a good way to handle this person in the future as well.
Virgo A hopeful friend or romantic partner may work hard to get your attention this month. And the extra attention may seem annoying rather than flattering. Even so, if you take some time to learn more about the individual, you may just find that this person has facets that surprise and please you. A social invitation toward the end of the month could connect you with someone you have long admired, and this could be a chance to get to know them. Don't be shy, and don't be afraid to be a bit boastful about yourself. This person could connect you to some wonderful opportunities.

chapter of your life you had turned the page on may seem to reopen once again in January. T Capricorn You may now be dealing with someone in a position of authority whose power has gone to their head. This leaves you in a precarious position, Capricorn, because you probably know far more than this individual. Even so, you may have to be polite and deferential and you may be anticipating a very challenging January because of it. But it does not have to be that way. Keep in mind that this person may be lacking confidence. But rather than undermining the individual with demonstrations of your own knowledge and abilities, offer your wisdom in a kind, compassionate, and helpful way, and you could become more of a partner than a subordinate. Aquarius It's frightening how the best plans can go wrong just by making one seemingly small mistake. But sometimes a small mistake can have a big impact. Some very minor issue has transformed a very hopeful dream into nothing! Or so it seems. January may hold a great deal of hope for you in other ways too. An old goal may suddenly seem to be closer and more possible than ever before. That may be due to something someone says that inspires you, or it could simply be because you can feel optimistic energy buzzing through your veins.
Sagittarius You may start out this month with a rush of enthusiasm for making resolutions and changing your life. Don't underestimate what you are capable of as you begin to plan your goals. You may also have the chance this month to teach someone something. Yes, you could play the role of mentor to either a much younger person - or to someone who is older but trying to make an old dream come true. A mystery surrounding a close friend could be explained in January. This could serve to bring you closer to someone with whom you have broken a connection with. This could involve an old love interest or a friendship you had given up on. While this may not offer instant gratification, it could be something worth building on again. Pisces December may have been a disappointment for you in some way, Pisces. Even if you had many invitations and many people to see, there could have been something lacking throughout the holiday season. This month, though, you will more than make up for it. You may find that you are on everyone's list. Friends and family members may seek you out, and it will be for positive reasons rather than negative. It could turn out to be a blessing in disguise in some way.. At the very end of the month, a social invitation could lead to a captivating romance.

CHANGES AT YORK AND HOW TO GET INVOLVED Kristy Kilburn Welcome back to campus wolves! Winter break is all fun and games until it is over and you forgot how to school… Luckily for you, the MacMedia team and myself are here to help you smoothly transition back into the school grind. The best way to transition into a new semester of school is to celebrate that you have made it this far and to keep on going. Frost Week is an amazing time to do so. Frost Week is basically the Frosh Week for students that start school in the winter semester. However, if you have been attending since fall, you can of course still take part in the activities. Unfortunately, this years Frost Week has already passed, but we hope you all took advantage of the many events York held. If not, not to worry! Here is your reminder for next year. Okay, now that the fun is over, let’s discuss everyone’s favourite topic, grades. The last day for Professors to input your fall semester grades is January 20, 2019. If you have yet to see a grade on your transcript for a class, make sure you head over to the Bennett Centre for Student Services to see what is going on. Also, the last day to drop a course with the permission of the course head is February 3, 2019, and the last day to drop a course without receiving a grade is March 13, 2019. In a more enlightening note, here are some ways to get involved at York this semester and to better your studies. I think I can speak on behalf of many of us when I say I love travelling. Have you ever thought of taking your passion for travelling and applying it to school? Global internships are an amazing way to do so. York has multiple partner universities worldwide and has a variety of opportunities for you to travel and work. The deadline to apply for global internships has been extended until January 28, 2019 so if you have been thinking of applying, now is your time. York International will be offering four more information sessions and they highly encourage you to attend if this is of interest to you. Another way to get involved at York is to attend sporting events! Get into the York spirit, get a group of friends, pick a sport and go cheer on our lions. The twitter account @yorklions will provide you the schedules of whatever sport you would like to watch. University is hard but you are not alone – we are all suffering! It is important to focus on your studies but make sure you give yourself a break. Instead of hitting the library every day, try attending a sporting event, an arts show or a movie screening here and there. Summer seems like a thousand years away, but it is right around the corner. Good luck!

Also, UN estimates that more than 65% of the Yemeni population will die of acute starvation if nothing is resolved soon. Tragedies of Humanity- Syria: In the first five years of the war, which began in 2011, an estimated 400,000 Syrians were killed, according to the UN Envoy for Syria. More than five million people have been displaced from war, famine and poverty in Syria. Additionally, Trump has ordered the American army to pull out of Syria, which could exacerbate the situation even more. In slightly good news, ISIS has lost most of its stronghold areas due to the work by Syrian army, Syrian rebel forces, Kurdish forces and international support. Yellow Vest protests: On November/17/2018, the first weekend of demonstrations by the "Des Gilets Jaunes" or the "Yellow Vests" began across France to protest rising fuel prices and French President Emmanuel Macron's government. The protests descended into chaos in Paris over the next three weekends, where dozens were left injured amid fires and tear gas. The protests are still happening around France, especially Paris.
