Early settlers in the Caribbean

Learning objectives When I have finished this unit, I will be able to:

ethnic – the group or

race that somebody belongs to race – the group of people you come from culture – the beliefs and behaviours of your race; the history, art, literature and entertainment of a people or place descended – the group of people you come from who lived a long time ago ancestors – the people you are related to who lived a long time ago

• recognise ethnic, cultural and racial groups in my country • identify early groups of people who came to my country and explain why and how they came • name historical sites and buildings in my country.

If you look around when you’re in a market place or perhaps your school, you will see lots of different ethnic groups. Your ethnic group is the race and culture of people that you are descended from. Different ethnic groups have different physical characteristics. For example, people from hot places have dark skin to help protect them from the sun. People from cooler countries have paler skin. There are also differences in people’s hair texture, eye colour and eye shape depending on what part of the world they or their ancestors are from. As well as looking different, people may believe different things and live differently depending on their cultural group.

Wh at hav e you lea rnt ? Can I recognise different ethnic groups in my country?

Ethnic, cultural and racial differences

Activity 1 A class has 24 children: 18 of these children are AfroCaribbean, two are European, one is Amerindian and the rest are Asian. Create a bar graph to show this.

ASIA

Lots of different types of people live in the Caribbean.

Caribbean people come from African, Amerindian, American, Asian and European ethnic groups. The largest ethnic group is Afro-Caribbean. The Amerindians were the first ethnic group to settle in the Caribbean. The three main Amerindian groups were the Arawaks (or Taino), the Caribs and the Ciboney. The Caribs were a fierce race of people and, during the 1300s, killed many of the Arawaks. Today, only a few Amerindians remain in the Caribbean. They live mainly in St. Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, St. Lucia, Grenada and St. Vincent. Recently, people from the Middle East have begun to settle in the Caribbean.

Look at the map. This shows where different early settlers to the Caribbean came from and what countries they settled in. The scale shows the distance between different places on the map. The scale line on the map is three centimetres long. In real life that represents 6000 kilometres.

Earth’s Place in the Universe

Earth’s Place in the Universe

What type of force is experienced between objects? How does the mass of the object affect the gravitational pull? Why do planets revolve around the Sun? What is the name given to the force that keeps the planet in a circular path?

centripetal force❯

Did you know? The time taken for the Earth to make one complete rotation about its axis is called a period. On Earth this is called a day which is 24 hours. daylight❯ night❯

ITQ5 Explain how daylight and night occurs on Earth.

How do planets stay in orbit?

After 1976, the missions to Mars paused for about 17 years. However by 1996 there was the development of rovers, such as the Sojourn, which roamed the surface of the planet and collected samples and other invaluable data about the planet’s geological make-up and environmental conditions. These mobile rovers have documented many features and events happening on the surface through photographs and videos, which are transmitted back to base on Earth. Some facts found out about Mars during the many explorations include that: its gravitational pull is about one-third that of Earth’s; its atmosphere is mainly carbon dioxide with a small amount of water vapour, nitrogen and argon; it has two moons; and its surface temperature gets as low as –63°C.

All objects have a gravitational force that attracts them to each other. When objects come in close proximity to each other the gravitational force of attraction exerted on each other increases. Also, the object with the larger mass will exert a greater gravitational pull on the objects close to it. In the solar system, the Sun has the largest mass of all the objects. Therefore, it exerts a greater gravitational pull on the planets and all other bodies in the solar system. This gravitational pull on the planets towards the Sun, which is at the centre of the elliptical path, is called the centripetal force. The centripetal force keeps the planets in orbit around the Sun; otherwise they would travel in a straight line. The same occurs when smaller objects, such as satellites, orbit a larger planet. The planet’s gravity pulls the satellite towards the centre keeping it in orbit.

Day and night On Earth, we experience changes from daylight toUmbra darkness during the time it takes the Earth to make one complete rotation on its axis. This occurrence is linked to the rotation of the Earth on its axis while it orbits the Sun. Figure 15.8 illustrates that the side of the Earth facing the Sun will experience daylight while a shadow is cast on the other side which is called night. However, as the Earth spins on its axis, the side exposed to the sunlight constantly changes, causing a shift from darkness to daylight within one complete rotation. Most countries around the world experience a change between night to daylight within a day. However, countries or landmasses located at the Earth’s poles, North and South poles, do not experience this change within a day. This is so because the Earth is tilted on its axis by about 23 degrees. As a result the Sun rises and sets only once a year at the poles. Usually they experience six months of daylight and six months of darkness.

Chapter summary • • • • • • •

The Earth spins on its axis. It makes one complete revolution in 24 hours. As the Earth spins the surface of the Earth that faces the Sun will experience daylight and the side away from the Sun will experience night

• The Moon is a natural satellite of the Earth. • Artificial satellites are used for monitoring, research and surveillance. • Polar satellites are launched closer to Earth and used for monitoring the Earth’s surface. • Geostationary satellites are launched further away from the Earth’s surface and they travel at the same speed at which the Earth spins on its axis. • Geostationary satellites are used in communications (telephone, radio, television, internet etc). • Skylab launched in 1973 was the USA’s first space station. It operated for six years. • Space labs conduct scientific and medical research. • The International Space Station (ISS) is a joint project of USA, Russia, Japan, Canada and the European Union. • The ISS has been in operation since 1998 and is still in operation today. It was built part by part in space and is the largest artificial satellite of Earth. • Gravity pulls objects towards the Earth. • A satellite must be launched at the right height and speed to remain in orbit. • If the speed of a satellite is too low, it will crash into the Earth. • If the satellite speed is too fast, it will either move to a higher orbit or escape into space. • An object in free fall only experiences the force of gravity acting on it. • Mars exploration occurred in three phases: flybys, orbiters, and landers and rovers.

A galaxy is a collection of stars, gas and dust. Earth is in the galaxy called the Milky Way. Stars are huge balls of burning gas. The Sun is a star. Stars appear to twinkle because of atmospheric turbulence. There are eight planets in our solar system – Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Pluto has been reclassified as a dwarf planet due to its small size. Planets orbit the Sun in an elliptical path. Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are examples of terrestrial planets. They are mainly composed of silicate rocks and iron. Terrestrial planets are closer to the Sun while gas giants are further away from the Sun. Planets further away from the Sun have a longer orbit period. The gravitational pull of the Sun is greater than all other bodies in the solar system because the Sun has the greater mass. Daylight and nighttime occur due to the Earth spinning on its axis. A solar eclipse happens when the Sun, Moon and Earth are aligned in this order. The Moon blocks the sunlight reaching to parts of the Earth. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth and Moon are aligned in this order. The Earth blocks the sunlight reaching the Moon. A lunar eclipse is only possible during a full moon phase. Rockets are used to propel spacecraft into space. Satellites are smaller objects that orbit a larger one.

CASTLE BRUCE SECONDARY SCHOOL, DOMINICA

“CXC Store eases pressure in terms of preparing students for their final exams. Teachers use the site to supplement their lessons, and rather than spending a lot of time preparing tests, we are able to refer students to specific questions to follow-up at the end of lesson or after school as homework. Castle Bruce is located in rural Dominica, and heavy rain can often result in mudslides and flooding. When this happens, we are forced to send students home, but CXC Store enables our students to continue their exam preparation. CXC Store has undoubtedly helped our students and I don’t think we’d be able to prepare them for their exams as much as we have without it.” Miss Alfred Head of Mathematics

CHAPTER 7 CARIBBEAN ARTS AND POPULAR CULTURE IN THE REGION AND ITS DIASPORA

BOX 7.9

Caribana

First staged in 1967, Caribana is now an annual festival held in Toronto over a long weekend around the end of July. Hotel packages can be booked including accommodation and tickets to various events. Every year the city plays host to over a million visitors and it is the largest cultural festival in North America. Competitions include Pan Alive, the Junior Carnival Parade and the King and Queen competition, and the main event is the parade on the Sunday, the final day of the festival, in which there are around 10 000 masked and costumed participants. As with the Notting Hill Carnival, there are plenty of parties associated with the event, drawing in a diverse group of people, not only from the Caribbean diaspora in Canada, but also from tourists from all over North America.

BOX 7.11

BOX 7.10

West Indian Day Parade, New York City

For nearly half a century New York City has celebrated Caribbean culture at a five-day carnival held every August/September in Brooklyn, a district of New York which, like Notting Hill in London, is home to a large Caribbean community. The carnival has its own organisation, WIADCA (West Indian American Day Carnival Association). The carnival incorporates a major world music festival (the ‘Caribbean Woodstock’), the Panorama steelband competition, Dimanche Gras and a junior costume parade. It culminates in the main parade down Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn on Labour Day Monday, an American public holiday, with floats and costumes similar to those seen at carnival celebrations in Notting Hill, Toronto Caribana and other smaller carnivals all over the world.

Caribbean Artists Movement (CAM)

The Caribbean Artists Movement was formed in London in 1966 to provide a link between the many artists and writers from the Anglophone Caribbean who were working in England at that time. The movement’s three founders – Edward Kamau Brathwaite (Barbados), Andrew Salkey (Jamaica) and John La Rose (Trinidad) – were concerned that Caribbean artists were being marginalised by mainstream British society. They needed a forum to discuss matters of interest and provide encouragement for each other. Although CAM was seen as a movement for social change in the Caribbean, it was not a political activist movement like Black Power. Discussion rather than direct action was its means of influence. The first, private, meeting was held in December 1966 at the home of Brathwaite and his wife Doris. As well as Salkey and La Rose, it was also attended by Louis Jones, Orlando Patterson, Evan Jones and

V.S. Naipaul (1932–)

Naipaul was born in Trinidad in 1932 as the grandson of an indentured labourer, but has been domiciled in the UK for many years and now holds British citizenship. He left Trinidad for the UK in 1950 to study at Oxford University on a government scholarship and ended up making his life abroad. He used his experiences as a young migrant in Oxford, and subsequently in London, as background for many of his most important novels, including Miguel Street, and built the famous A House for Mr Biswas around the experiences of his father as an Indian second-generation migrant in Trinidad. As well as writing novels, he is also a travel writer, including The Middle Passage, based on travels around the Caribbean in 1960– 1961 at the invitation of Eric Williams, prime minister of Trinidad and Tobago. He also visited India in 1962, where he wrote An Area of Darkness, and spent time in Uganda as writer-in-residence at Makerere University in the capital, Kampala, where he completed The Mimic Men. Over a career spanning more than 50 years, Naipaul has published over 30 books. He won a Nobel Prize for literature in 2001. The Nobel committee praised his work ‘for having united perceptive narrative and incorruptible scrutiny in works that compel us to see the presence of suppressed histories’. He was knighted in 1986. Some writers have criticised Naipaul for coming too close to the colonial world view, but there is no doubting either the quality of his writing or the prestige in which he is held worldwide as someone of Caribbean heritage.

183

Definitions of culture abound, and are both contested and complex. But the contribution of the Caribbean to world culture, especially popular culture, has been enormous. This is partly because of the many influences on the development of Caribbean culture, from Africa, Europe and Asia among other regions, arising from the varied origins of our people. It is also because of the size and importance of the Caribbean diaspora in other continents, particularly North America or Europe, where Caribbean culture has entered the mainstream.

Focusing on your own country or territory, or a Caribbean country with which you are familiar, carry out in-depth research on one or more art forms which are particularly associated with it. Some examples you might choose are: ■ high culture such as ballet, western art, literature, drama or classical music; ■ popular dance or song; ■ indigenous or creole art forms such as steelpan; ■ patois or creole poetry; ■ street theatre or mas.

Anthony Haynes. Here it was proposed that a more formal discussion be held at Patterson’s house in January 1967, and Aubrey Williams was invited to join. At this second meeting the name Caribbean Artists Movement was proposed by Nerys Patterson, and the movement was formally launched in March 1967 at the West Indian Students’ Centre with a symposium on ‘New Directions in West Indian Writing’. CAM quickly developed into something much larger and more important than its founders had envisaged, with members in the diaspora of Africa, North America and other parts of the Commonwealth as well as Europe. Three annual conferences were held between 1967 and 1969, two at the University of Kent, the third jointly with the West Indian Students Union at the West Indian Students Centre. CAM’s heyday was between 1967 and 1972, but its influence continued to be felt in the diaspora for many years afterwards.

34 MODULE 1 | UNIT 1 | BUSINESS AND ITS ENVIRONMENT

Obligations of the firm to stakeholders The firm’s social responsibilities can span four stakeholders of the business in different ways. These are summarised in Table 2.1. Stakeholders

The firm’s responsibilities to the stakeholder

Consumers

Ensure that they get value for their money Fair and truthful advertisements Ensure that products are safe and are of the highest standards Offer after-sales service

Employees

Foster participation of employees in decision making Provide proper working conditions Fair treatment of all employees Maintain proper communication lines, especially where employees will be affected by a change or decision Provide opportunities for social gatherings, whether through family days, parties, etc.

Shareholders

Community

Give fair returns on shareholders’ investment Keep them informed of the business’s performance Provide a forum through which they can express views and give suggestions Protect their investment Ensure that waste is properly disposed of Reduce pollution, including that from air and noise Lessen displacement caused by the building of factories or roadways Give back to the community in which it operates

Table 2.1: The firm’s social responsibilities to stakeholders

Good corporate governance Corporate governance is often defined as a set of rules, practices and processes which guide the way a business is operated. The aim of corporate governance is to balance the interest of the stakeholders of the company – that is, the firm must cater for the needs and interest of its stakeholders as much as is possible. For this to be achieved, though, the board of directors should ensure that meaningful and healthy relationships are created with shareholders and other stakeholders. A firm which has good corporate governance will find it easier to achieve its objectives. In many companies we find that the owners (shareholders) are not necessarily the people who are in control on a day-to-day basis. Instead, these shareholders often employ paid managers and professionals to operate the firm. The sad reality is that sometimes board members may not always act in the best interest of the shareholders. Good corporate governance is therefore needed to ensure that the interests

9780230400436_text.indd 34

72

CHAPTER 2 | BUSINESS OBJECTIVES

of shareholders are catered for – it ensures that the rights of shareholders are not infringed; that they, along with other stakeholders, are treated fairly and equitably; and promotes disclosure and transparency on the part of management. Today, most firms are operating within a competitive global environment and, as such, being a good corporate citizen is of the utmost importance. While aiming to generate a profit, the firm must also prove itself as being aware of the environmental impact of its operations and take steps to lessen that impact. A firm with poor corporate governance may find it difficult to attract potential investors. It could also lead to financial collapse, failure of privatisation attempts and an increase in corruption.

Government’s response to social irresponsibility

CHAPTER SUMMARY

The following steps can be taken by governments to deal with businesses that are being socially irresponsible and unethical: Impose taxes to offset the cost to the environment (social cost) Pass legislation limiting noise and other forms of pollution Refuse to give contracts to companies that are unethical or socially irresponsible Impose stiff penalties.

Presently, in most territories, there are some laws preventing businesses from damaging the environment. However, some actions cannot be prevented by the enactment of laws. Therefore businesses are also encouraged to act ethically in their operations. Ethics defines what is right or wrong – or what is moral. It refers to the principles or guidelines that help to inform individuals or groups of individuals of how they should behave. This definition is largely dependent on the norms of society and what is accepted over time. Business ethics refers to the morals or set of standards that are used to guide a business on how it should conduct its affairs. This usually includes written and unwritten codes on how businesses should behave. Some common ethical issues within CARICOM include: The testing of products on animals The use of child labour How employees deal with customers Truthful versus deceptive advertisements.

This is a document issued by the firm, outlining the set of guidelines that will be used to govern the behaviour of management and employees. This code is often based on a set of pre-established standards or principles and usually includes: The firm’s corporate social responsibility statement The relationship that the firm has with its customers and suppliers Environment requirements and unanswered questions Rules on relating to the maintenance of integrity.

11/07/2015 17:11

Long-term objectives are general and give the overall direction of the firm in the future Short-term objectives are specific and outline what the firm wants to achieve in a short period of time

A ‘toxic nightmare’ Over 100,000 people on Covory Isle woke up to what is now dubbed a ‘toxic nightmare’. This happened after a cash-rich and powerful multinational chemical producing firm (Chemi-Prod Inc) dumped waste along the coast of the small island. The situation infuriated the residents, who called in the relevant authority to look into the situation. Upon investigation it was found that an entire shipment of highly toxic waste was illegally disposed of along the coast. Further inquiry revealed that the company was faced with a transportation cost that had quadrupled since the agreement was made with the company TranSecure. Rather than face this cost, Chemi-Prod Inc instructed its staff to dump the waste in the most secretive and least costly way. Since the revelation, Chemi-Prod Inc has faced numerous criticisms and threats of lawsuit by environmental agencies and other pressure groups. If the lawsuits were to be successful, the firm could be asked to pay out billions of dollars to settle claims. Questions

Code of ethics

Objectives that are well written should be SMART – that is: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely

The hierarchy of objectives outlines the firm’s vision; mission statement; and corporate, strategic, tactical and operational objectives

Ethics define what is right or wrong, or what is moral A number of firms are becoming more aware of their corporate social responsibilities and some have taken steps to become more socially responsible.
