Macmillan Teachers

Teachers are confident and passionate about the education of the students. They are up-to-date with the latest pedagogy and teaching strategies, from Macmillan’s teacher newsletter and online resources. Due to comprehensive and easy-to-use resources, teachers can plan their lessons easily and effectively, using strategies that will engage students.

Macmillan Workbooks

Macmillan students use their write-in workbooks to reinforce the skills and knowledge introduced in the student’s books, and often take them home as homework to reinforce and share their learning with parents.

My teaching tip: Some Tips for Reading Aloud: Reading aloud is more than a fun classroom activity – it’s an effective teaching strategy. It’s important to read aloud with expression and enthusiasm. Don’t be afraid if you sound silly by reading the story dramatically. Your students will love it. Encourage children to get involved in the story by describing pictures and making predictions. Of course, Macmillan books are excellent to achieve this goal. Ask “what” questions. (“What’s this?” and point to a picture.) Follow your students’ answers with other questions (“What is Anansi doing?”). Repeat what your students say and expand on it (“I think you’re right. Anansi is eating yams.”).

Teachers must be creative and have fun with our students. It’s a great idea to read in character, to act out parts of the story, or use other techniques to engage our students in it.

The nine workbooks support a hands-on, experiencebased approach to learning, encouraging children to become active learners. Primary

My teaching tip: My teaching tip is get to know your students. When you know who you are teaching, you are better prepared to serve them. Sometimes we think most students learn alike and only a handful need special attention‌ WRONG! I had to learn this the hard way but it helped me with my other classes going forward. Each child is an individual and if we treat them as such and not a collective body we will be better able to reach them and take them from point A to point B. So get to know your children and take them from where they are at to where you would like them to be. Please keep in mind all may not reach your goal for them but if we take them as they are they will make a step in the right direction.

Anansi the Spider Man Philip M. Sherlock Anansi the Spider Man is a legend told by storytellers and parents throughout the world! Anansi was a man and a spider. When things went well he was a man, but when he was in great danger he became a spider, safe in his web high up on the ceiling. By trickery and guile he always got the better of those who were much bigger than he was. As a child growing up in Jamaica, Philip Sherlock listened in the evenings to these West Indian tales, which he now retells with humour and warmth, and illustrator Marcia Brown’s drawings capture the tales’ gaiety and subtlety.

40

Debbie Jacob No one ever knew the cause of the deadly flood that hit St Ann’s, Trinidad in 1993 - no one, that is, until a frightened boy named Jabari came stumbling out of the St Ann’s hills with a legend given to him by Papa Bois, the king of the forest. Rescued from the clutches of Mama Dlo, the anaconda who is queen of the rivers, Jabari was given the task of telling people the real story of the flood.

My teaching tip: Before trying to teach the fundamentals of any content area, we must gauge the level of student readiness. Knowing that many students have varying backgrounds, learning styles and needs, we must first meet their need to be loved and accepted. This is one of the most effective teaching methods that I have used to date. When students feel loved and that the teachers believe in them, mistakes will be deemed opportunities to try other ways, and successes will be comparative to Olympic gold medals. Be your students’ greatest motivator. 44

History in Trinidad and Tobago

My community

HISTORY

Practicality means considering the cost, time and sample size needed to collect the data. For example, if you are studying changes in employment in your community it may not be practical to try to interview all adults in the neighbourhood. You can find more on the above in the broader context of doing research in the Skills toolkit, ‘Quick tips on doing research’ (page 309). Some primary sources are pictured below. You can also find photographs of other primary sources in this book, on pages 146, 151, 170 and 171 (images of Government House, St. Ann’s, by Cazabon, Sir Ralph Woodford’s tomb, Port of Spain Borough Council building, the Black Power Movement protests), and in Chapter 13 in the section on historical sites on pages 219-222.

Did you know? The National Archives of Trinidad and Tobago has a collection of primary and secondary source materials. You can find out more about them at: bit.ly/TTnationalarchives.

An invoice for slaves (dated 1835, after emancipation but before the end of slavery) showing the names of and amounts paid for ‘ten negroes’

 Try this! Choose one of the primary sources on page 186 and explain how it would be useful to a historian researching the period or event. Do you think it is a reliable, relevant and practical source? Why or why not?

What is a primary source? What is a secondary source? What are the four types of primary sources? What do we mean by the relevance of a source? What do we mean by the reliability of a source? What do we mean by the practicality of a source?

Thinking creatively and critically 1 Work with a small group. Choose one major historical development in Trinidad and Tobago’s history. Find out more about it using a variety of sources. Keep a careful note of the sources you use – see Skills toolkit, ‘Quick tips on doing research’ (page 309). Draw a timeline for this historical development. Create a slide show presentation about this historical development for your classmates. See Skills toolkit, ‘Quick tips on creating and making an electronic presentation on PowerPoint’ (page 320).

Chapter 12

HISTORY

Work with a partner. Choose one topic or event from Trinidad and Tobago’s history and make a list of the sources you would like to use to investigate it further. Classify your sources as primary and secondary. Discuss which sources you think will be the most relevant, reliable and practical for you to use. Create a chart using coloured annotations to show your proposed sources and identify which you think are likely to be most relevant, reliable and practical.

Book 2 builds on the foundations established in Book 1 and equips the student with the necessary tools for more advanced studies

Book 3 brings to a natural conclusion these topics completing the course for students studying for The Bahamas Junior Certificate

Choose one of the primary sources in this chapter and analyse it carefully to get as much information as possible from it. Consider the following questions. ● What does the primary source depict? ● When was it created? Was it created at the time of what it depicts or later? ● How does what it depicts reflect one or more aspects of the history of Trinidad and Tobago? ● What kinds of research might this primary source be useful for?

12.3 Historical sites and landmarks You looked at some of our most famous and important historical sites and landmarks in Form 1 (e.g. Queen’s Royal College in Port of Spain, the Courland Monument near Great Courland Bay in Tobago).

Documents relating to land ownership are key sources Watch a video about independence, ‘This land of ours’, at bit.ly/TTthisland

Old letters (such as this one, dated 1850) can be very useful to those researching a family’s history

Historical sites and landmarks, you will recall, are buildings or places of importance and value to us as a nation. They are locations where something in history happened or which commemorate historical events. They help us to understand the history and values of our nation and local community, as well as to picture and tell stories about the past.

Are any of these qualities more about civic duty than morality? Why? Do you think that any of these qualities are especially about religion? Why?

‘In the Caribbean’ sections provide real-life examples within the region that students will be able to relate to

Why RE is important What exactly is RE and why is it taught in schools in Jamaica and in the wider Caribbean? Below are some reasons. • RE teaches us religious thinking skills. • RE teaches us civic virtues and moral values and prepares us for adult life. • RE is an important part of the school curriculum because it helps us develop our spiritual, moral, social and cultural selves. It helps us to develop our self-worth and identity. • RE encourages students to value themselves and others and celebrates diversity in society – RE helps us to understand, value and respect our similarities and differences. • RE recognises influence of religion in the Caribbean and in Jamaica – young people learn about traditional belief systems, which have shaped our religious, cultural and social life. • Learning about religions helps our young people to begin to think ethically, to consider ultimate questions, to be spiritual and to develop an enquiring mind. • Students will ultimately examine how religion can influence change in their lives. • If we learn about each other’s faith we can promote religious understanding and stop prejudice and stereotyping. We must have respect for all if we are to live alongside each other. • Students can look at how cultures and how religions and beliefs contribute to cultural identity and practices.

Even though not everyone shares the same religious beliefs, we all try to make sense of life and its ups and downs. Religious Education (RE) is part of the school curriculum because it is a subject designed to help us better understand ourselves and the world we live in through learning about religion and its relevance in our own lives.

What does RE teach us? Learning about religion In RE, you will discover why and how people past and present have searched for the meaning and purpose of life, and the role religion plays in fulfilling this search. You will find out about some of the major world religions: what they are, their histories, beliefs, values and practices. Learning from religion It is important to remember that RE is not about teaching you how to become a spiritual person, nor is it about which religion is more worthy of your support. Rather, it is about reflecting on the meaning of life, identity and belonging, and values and commitment within a religious context. Throughout this course, you will be given opportunities to reflect on and discuss your own opinions, and to consider other religions and how they find meaning in life. Learning how religion influences change In RE, you will also study and evaluate the place of religion, and its values, within the context of family and wider society. In particular, you will learn about the traditional belief systems across the Caribbean, and the part these have played in shaping the religious, cultural and social life of the region.

AC T I V I T Y 1 Write definitions and explanations of religion and RE using various sources, which your teacher will provide. 2 Discuss these definitions and explanations in class. Compare what you learnt from adults in your community about RE with how the subject is taught today.

AC T I V I T Y RE has probably changed a great deal since your parents and other members of your family and community were at school! 1 Find out from adults at home and in your community what RE was like when they were at school. Think of questions to ask, and then interview people and write down their answers.

Learning about religion in the Caribbean In the Caribbean, Christianity is the dominant religion, with around 80 per cent of the total population calling themselves Christians. Other major religious groups across the region include Hinduism, Islam and Judaism. You will learn about these four world religions in RE, and the next chapter will outline the key information that will be important in your study as well as how these faiths reached the Caribbean. However, you will also study various Jamaican faiths – the Rastafari Movement and Revivalism – and other religious groups in the wider Caribbean (Figure 1.5).

My teaching tip: My teaching tip is to use students’ interest to help my students to learn and remember the information and also to want to learn the information. With this in mind I have utilized beats from different songs and have my students create songs based on the topics we covered. I also have students create replicas of certain situations. This fostering students’ interest has made teaching of history easier as students are eager to learn the information. 60

INDIVIDUAL, FAMILY AND SOCIETY

member’s basic emotional and psychological needs should be met. Families support each other on a day-to-day basis through encouragement, practical assistance, listening to each other and giving comfort. At times of particular stress, such as during exams or illness, the support of family members is particularly important. As children grow, other sources of acceptance and approval, such as peer groups and romantic relationships, become important. However, the family is the first and most crucial place for emotional needs to be met. When a child grows up, the family they go on to form with a partner goes on to be their main source of identity and emotional support. When children feel secure and accepted within their family, they are more likely to grow up to be emotionally stable, happy and responsible, and to nurture happy children of their own.

SBA: Method of investigation Your SBA will require you to state what method of investigation you use and why. Think about the different ways you could find information and whether your choice of research method is the right one for the task. Children develop their identity and a sense of selfworth, first and foremost, through being part of a family. The family is the primary point at which

CASE STUDY

Everyone at school thinks Maria is lucky. At every party, she is dressed in fashionable clothes, she also has a laptop and the latest phone. But Maria doesn’t feel happy. She appreciates all the things she has and the nice house she lives in, paid for by the money that her parents earn, but, more than the money, Maria wishes that her parents were around more. Maria and her brother are old enough to look after themselves after school until their parents arrive home from work, but their younger sister goes to a babysitter’s after school. Lately, Maria’s sister has been complaining that she can never have friends come by to play after school. Sometimes, when Maria has had a difficult day, she wishes that her mum was around for her to talk to. Often, by the time her parents get home from work, they are tired and busy preparing the evening meal.

Different family types

CASE STUDY QUESTIONS

2. How well do you feel Maria and Clara’s economic, emotional and psychological needs are being met? Score each area out of ten for each girl. Give one reason for your score.

There are also many different types of family in the Caribbean and around the world. People’s family structures may change at various stages of their life. Modern-day families include:

A range of case studies that focus on current Caribbean political, social, cultural and environmental challenges

• reconstructed family – this family unit is the result of two adults with children from previous relationships joining their families together. The children of the two adults become step-siblings and the parents become step-parents to each other’s children. In addition to their children from previous relationships, the adults may have more children together. This type of family requires compromise and a willingness to adapt from all members of the reconstructed family, as well as from blood parents not living within the family unit.

• nuclear families – traditionally, people viewed nuclear families as the ideal child rearing environment. Today, most people recognise that there are many different types of family and each can function effectively. Supporters of the nuclear family argue that a mother and father fulfil different but complementary roles. Traditionally, a mother played more of a nurturing role within the family while the father was often the breadwinner and disciplinarian. Some people believe that the absence of a father in a child’s life, particularly for boys, can negatively impact their development as they lack a close male role model or influence. Others, however, believe that this male influence can be found outside of the family from male relatives, friends or teachers. The most important aspect of any family is that children feel secure and loved.

6

9781786321527_text.indd 6

• sibling households – these are families where both parents are absent. The family is led by older siblings who care for younger members of the family. This family unit is often the result of parents dying or moving away for work or other commitments.

ACTIVITY 1 In small groups, take turns to describe the

members of your family. The rest of the group should identify what type of family structure you live in from the list above. 2 Still in your groups, discuss the advantages

and disadvantages of the different family types. Then, working individually, present these advantages and disadvantages in the form of a table.

CHECK 1. List three major functions of the family. 2. Provide definitions for the following terms: kinship; nuclear family; and siblings.

• extended families – this describes family structures where one or more relatives outside of the nuclear family live together in the household. Extended families may include grandparents,

3. Which family would you rather be a part of? Why?

1

aunts, uncles, cousins or in-laws (family members connected by marriage). In extended families, there is often more than one authority figure and members share responsibilities.

The family is a social unit connected by blood, marriage or adoption. The family a person is born into is their kinship group. Extended family members can be traced through either the mother’s (matrilineal) or father’s (patrilineal) line. Family members usually live together. The family has a number of important functions within society.

• single-parent families – some children are brought up by one parent. This may be a mother or a father. Single-parent families may be the result of parents separating, a parent dying or a mother choosing to bring up a child alone. Families led by a female parent are said to be matriarchal (or matrifocal) while those with the father as the central authority figure are patriarchal (or patrifocal). Often, children whose parents are divorced split their time between the houses of both parents.

1. What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of Maria and Clara’s family situations?

Maria’s friend, Clara, lives with her mother, sister and two brothers. Clara’s mum works part-time and their dad doesn’t always send the money he’s meant to. Their house is always happy and full of life and Clara likes her mum being around, but she wishes they had more money. It’s hard for Clara to have any time

Imagine you are Hong Fei’s legal advisor. Analyse the case and explain to them the best course of action to follow.

The popular events company HongFei Promotions approached Waggy, a soca artiste, to perform at a fete. Waggy accepted and Hong-Fei Promotions marketed him as one of the key performers for the event. In December, Waggy was involved in a car accident in which he sustained a broken leg, requiring surgery, and was not recovered enough in time to perform at the fete. The managers of Hong-Fei Promotions were upset that Waggy did not perform, as disappointed attendees had begun to post negative comments on social media, claiming they paid especially to see Waggy perform and had been misled. The managers of Hong-Fei Promotions decided to seek legal advice before proceeding with a course of action.

INTRODUCTION Trade takes place when producers of goods and services supply them to customers in return for money or other goods and services. These exchanges or transactions may involve simple verbal or written contracts or speciality contracts.

Business organisations are both producers and consumers of goods and services. They consume or use up materials, component parts, equipment, electricity, stationery and many other goods and services in their day-to-day operations. This means that running a business involves transactions. There are many documents involved in running a business; these can be related to record keeping or to transactions. Record keeping helps with decision making, accountability, retrieval of important information, evaluating performance and compliance with tax and auditing regulations. Business documents include invoice, pro forma invoice, purchase requisition and purchase order, statement of account, credit note and debit note.

Students of agricultural science from Grenada, Trinidad and Jamaica provided valuable feedback on the book’s design, features and overall approach to help create a student-friendly and engaging text.

How does importing food reduce the number of job opportunities?

®

Trade liberalisation helps global competitiveness. A fair trade in goods and services develops through removing tariffs and non-tariff barriers. A tariff is a tax levied by a government on imports (or occasionally exports) for purposes of protection, support of the balance of payments, or the raising of revenue. Global trade liberalisation initiatives encourage greater efficiency in marketing and trade by restructuring trade policy regimes to reduce the level of protection from competition. Trade liberalisation does not just depend on the removal of barriers and the negotiation of better access conditions. It requires rules which define the framework for each government in the formulation of their trade policies. This should result in each country being encouraged to improve productivity in agriculture and making greater efforts to improve the quality of agricultural products.

Marion Perrett-Pearson and Ronald Ramharacksingh

Agricultural plans are policy documents, prepared by governments, private firms or international organisations, setting out plans for agricultural development. Normally, local or national plans are prepared by the government of each Caribbean country for a five-year period. The plan for each country identifies the areas of agriculture which need attention and may specify the current status, constraints, strategies and resources required for the development of each area. Carefully prepared plans can bring about agricultural development and national development. Regional plans for agricultural development are produced through the cooperative efforts of Caribbean countries, based on the agricultural needs of the region. Specific goals, objectives, constraints, strategies, resources and evaluation procedures help to put the plans into practice.
