SPORT CRAZY! THE WORLD GAMES

What are the World Games? The World Games are an international sporting event that takes place every four years. People from more than eighty countries take part. How are they different from the Olympic Games? The World Games don’t include Olympic summer sports (such as cycling, sailing, athletics, canoeing, volleyball, judo, badminton or diving) or Olympic winter sports (like skiing or ski jumping). Some sports were in the World Games before they became Olympic sports. For example, the triathlon and taekwondo didn’t become Olympic sports until 2000. Which sports are there in the World Games? There are more than thirty sports in six categories: ball sports (e.g. squash, canoe polo), martial arts (e.g. karate, sumo), artistic and dance sports (e.g. aerobic gymnastics), strength sports (e.g. powerlifting), precision sports (e.g. bowling, field archery), and new trend sports (like parachuting or sport climbing). Who won the 2013 World Games? Italy came first with eighteen gold medals. Poland didn’t win many medals: just two gold and three silver. 2009 Kaohsiung Taiwan

2013 Cali Colombia

2017 Wrocław Poland

Did you know? At the 2013 World Games, there was a problem with the medals. They didn’t spell ‘World Games’ correctly – the medals said ‘Word Games’, but the officials didn’t notice. The athletes didn’t mind – they were happy to win a medal!

Zadanie testujące

1 Przeczytaj opis dyscypliny sportowej oraz dwa profile osób: Marii i Samuela. Wskaż fragmenty profili, które pasują do opisu. Do kogo bardziej pasują skoki do wody?

Przeczytaj informacje o trzech osobach (1–3) i oferty czterech klubów sportowych (A–D). Do każdej osoby dopasuj klub, który najbardziej by jej odpowiadał. Zapisz odpowiedzi w zeszycie. Uwaga! Jedna oferta została podana dodatkowo i nie pasuje do żadnej osoby.

Diving is a beautiful sport and it’s similar to gymnastics or dancing. It isn’t easy to jump from high places, but most divers say that it’s a great feeling. They also love it because it gives them a great chance to be on their own. Many people think that it’s a summer sport, but in fact you can practise it all year. The description fits Samuel better,

because he likes spending his free time alone. Maria, on the other hand, prefers to do team sports.

Maria thinks it’s good to find some time to relax every day, and she’s a big fan of water sports. In her opinion, it’s great to take part in team games because you not only do some sport, but also meet your friends at the same time. Samuel was a dancer when he was younger and he enjoyed it a lot. He loves doing difficult sports, and he says that it’s important to do some sport regularly. He spends a lot of time with other people, and that’s why he likes relaxing alone.

2 Przeczytaj profil Magdy i zdecyduj, który sport (A czy B) bardziej do niej pasuje. Magda: ‘I sometimes do sports on my own, but I also like taking part in competitions with our school team. I think it’s important to be active all the time. I don’t like spending a lot of money on sports equipment, like many of my friends do.’ A If you don’t like doing the same sport all the time, think about doing athletics. It’s a combination of many different sports that you can do both indoors and outdoors. They’re mostly individual sports, but there are also some activities that you can do together with other people. You don’t need much to start – just a pair of sports shoes is enough. B Cycling is a good sport for people who want to be active all year. If you’re bored with doing sports alone, you can find some friends when you join a cycling team. They help you when you don’t feel very motivated, and you can take part in competitions together. The only problem is that good bicycles can be very expensive.

1

TIP Nie zaznaczaj odpowiedzi wyłącznie na podstawie podobieństw w słownictwie między tekstami.

Ola: ‘I enjoy working with others. My friends tell me that I’m a good friend and I can make other people work well together. I believe that speed is the key to success in any sport, so I always try to be the fastest I can. I don’t really like exercising outdoors.’ A

1

Maciek: ‘I love training alone. I played football for a few years, but it wasn’t for me. I enjoy any weather – sun, rain or snow – they all give me energy! Also, I don’t want to buy any expensive equipment.’ C

2

Kuba: ‘I like sports where you have to concentrate all the time. I don’t need any teammates to help me if I do something wrong. I just want some simple rules and a lot of action, and I want it all year long!’ D

3

A V-ballers If you like being in a team, regular hard work and lots of emotions, then our club is what you are looking for. We’re proud of the fact that our team won the National Volleyball Championship in 2010, 2013 and 2014. We believe that good teamwork is the key to success. B Cool Speed Team (CST) Speed, fresh cold air, and being happy – it’s all here. We train in the hills around our town from November until the end of February. It’s true that you have to buy some skis and skiing boots, but, after that, skiing is not expensive. C Going with the Wind Running shoes, a T-shirt and shorts (or a tracksuit on a cold day), that’s all you need to start running with us. Every training session includes a warm-up and running practice. We start together, but then everybody works alone. We’re different from each other, and we don’t need the same type of exercise. D Kendo Club Kendo is a traditional Japanese martial art, but it’s not a strength sport. You just need speed and precision to be good at it. Every fight is short, quick and full of energy. We train twice a week, but you need some special equipment to take part in the fights.

3 Napisz własny profil osobowy. Następnie daj go do przeczytania koledze/koleżance i poproś o dopasowanie twojego profilu do jednego ze sportów opisanych na tej stronie. Czy zgadzasz się z tym wyborem? 101
