POZIOM ROZSZERZONY Read the following text about community gardening and match the paragraphs (1–3) with the appropriate headings (A–D). There is one extra heading that does not match any paragraph.

Community Gardening for Everyone 1.

Community gardens aren’t as new as you may expect. People have relied on them as a source of affordable fresh fruit and vegetables for hundreds of years. The inner-city gardens played a very important role during the Second World War when the delivery of food grown in the villages was very difficult or sometimes even impossible. After the war the interest in this type of activity decreased, but people came back to the idea in the 60s and the green spaces became fashionable again.

The supporters of community gardening have no doubts about its positive impact. Firstly, the gardens provide people with food free of genetic modifications, which are widely used in industrial food production. The garden products are, therefore, healthier and tastier than the ones available in the shops. Secondly, green areas restore oxygen to the air in the cities and reduce the air pollution. In addition to that community gardens filter rainwater, helping to keep lakes, rivers, and groundwater clean.

But the eco-friendly factors are not the only ones that matter. The residents cultivating the gardens, besides having a very healthy diet, get a lot of fresh air and are physically active, which is not so popular in the era of TV and computers. It is extremely important, especially for the obese people in the society, because the work in the gardens gives them motivation and means to fight their illness. In the gardens people also create long-lasting friendships while working together, and they don’t feel alone any more. ‘I’ve lived here for so many years, and I didn’t really know anyone before we started the garden; now it’s completely different,’ says one of the active participants.
