Teacher’s Notes Rhyming dominoes Level 2, Module 1
VOCABULARY
SPOT
Level and module: Hot Spot 2, Module 1 Target language: Pronunciation: words that rhyme. Most of the words appear in Module 1 of the book. Activity time: 10 – 15 minutes Organization: Small groups of 3 or 4 (forming a team, who will play against the other teams in the class). Type of activity: Domino-style matching card game, with an element of letter rearrangement / word formation. Preparation: For each group of 3–4 students, print one copy of the activity on the next page. Cut each sheet into a set of cards along the dotted lines, and shuffle each set well.
Instructions:
3 Explain that the other cards all have words, like ‘mates’, in which the letters have been mixed up. They must do two things: They must rearrange these letters to make words. They must join the cards together like dominoes: the rearranged word on the right side of each card will rhyme with another rearranged word on the left side of another card. The final card has the word ‘Finish’ on it. 4 The first group in the class to rearrange their words and join all their cards together is the winner. Answers The cards are in their correct order on the activity sheet. The rearranged words are: mates, skates, cheese, please, curly, early, sport, short, shoes, news, new, blue, tall, hall, seventh, eleventh, long, wrong, name, game, fruit, boot.
1 Divide your class into small groups of three or four, and give each group a set of cards, which they should place face down between them. 2 Tell them to find the card with the word ‘Start’ on it, and look at the sentence on the right side of that card. Ask them in their groups to rearrange the letters in bold to make a word. Allow them a few moments for this, then check that they all have the word ‘mates’.
