Aim In this lesson, students read and discuss the true story of a girl’s childhood in Somalia, and her new life in England. They also write an account of their own childhood. 1 Reading • Put the students in pairs and ask them to look at the photos and predict what the story is going to be about. (The photos show Nadia at her childhood home in Somalia, and a map of England, representing her new home.) • Ask a few students to share their ideas with the class. • Read the text with the students and ask them if their guesses were correct. 2 Comprehension • Ask the students to read the story again and decide if the sentences are true (T) or false (F). Ask them to correct the false sentences. • Check the answers with the class. Answers 1 F (The war started soon after she was born.)
3 Vocabulary • Ask the students to choose the correct meanings for each word. Encourage them to find the words in the text and work out the meaning from the context. • Ask the students to compare answers in pairs before checking them with the class. Answers 1 b, 2 a, 3 b, 4 a, 5 c 4 Writing • Tell the students to imagine they are 65 years old. Ask: What things will you remember about your life now when you are 65? • Tell them to think about: games they play, things they do with their friends, their home and school, daily family routines, the family home, etc. • Students imagine they are 65-year-old grandparents and write a letter to their grandchildren describing their childhood. Remind them to use the past tense. • Note: The writing stage of this activity could be set for homework.
