Task 4 – Poziom podstawowy
Procedure: Warm-up
(8 min)
Tell your students that you are going to describe an imaginary place which has been affected by a natural disaster and they need to guess what the disaster is. You may ask them to close their eyes if you think that they’ll feel comfortable with that. Read the text below describing a wildfire: I’m in a forest. It’s really hot and it is difficult for me to breathe. I can hear the sound of falling trees. After the students have guessed the disaster, give them the copies of the “Exam Roundup Unit 5” worksheets, divide them into pairs and ask them to do the warm-up task (matching the words with the disasters). Remind them that they can use the words from the table for more than one disaster.
(8 min)
Ask the students to read the letter and decide which text from Task 2 it refers to. Then, as a short revision, elicit from the students the rules of using Past Simple and Past Continuous tenses. Tell them to complete the letter individually with the verbs in the correct form of one of those two tenses. KEY: happened, needed, asked, agreed, were looking for, found, were trying, heard Task 5 – Poziom rozszerzony
(12 min)
Ask the students to choose one of the remaining disasters described in Task 2, imagine that they were present when the disaster occurred and write a letter to a friend describing the situation. Encourage them to use the letter from Task 4 as a role model, as well as the words from the warm-up task and Task 3 and their ideas from Task 1 (written on the board).
Then ask them to create similar descriptions to the one that you did at the beginning for their partners to guess, using the words from the exercise Task 1
(5 min)
Ask the students to ask and answer the questions from the task, either in pairs or as an open class discussion. If you choose to assign the task as a pair activity, gather your students’ ideas about Question 3 after they have finished talking and write them on the board. Task 2 – Poziom podstawowy
(8 min)
Ask the students to read the texts and match the disasters with the questions individually. Then check as a class. KEY: 1. B, 2.C, 3.A, 4.C
