VOCABULARY
SPOT
Level and module: Hot Spot 1, Module 6 Target language: Animals and their characteristics Activity time: 15 minutes Organization: Small group work Type of activity: Card matching and sentence development Preparation: Print one copy of the activity for each group of three or four pupils. Cut along the dotted lines on the first page to make a set of cards.
Answers: The animals are: Parrot, Dolphin, Spider, Dog, Fish, Snake, Penguin, Butterfly, Lion, Wolf, Hamster, Crocodile, Rabbit, Tiger, Elephant
Instructions: 1 Divide your class into groups of three or four students, and give each group a set of cards and a sentence sheet. Tell the students to spread their cards out, face up, between them. 2 Explain that the cards contain the names of 15 animals. The first part of each animal name is on one card, and the second part is on another card. They should work together in their group to find the 15 animals. 3 Once all 15 animals are found, the group should choose any five of them, and complete the sentences on the Sentence sheet*. There is an example on the sheet using monkey (which does not appear on any of their cards). 4 The first group to complete all of their sentences raises their hands. Check their sentences. If they are all correct, that group is the winner. • You can make this more challenging by insisting that students do not repeat any information. So, for example, if they say that one of their chosen animals has four legs, they cannot use the same information for another of their chosen animals.
