VOCABULARY
SPOT
Answers A There is a river, a train station, a park and a swimming pool. (In any order) There are two supermarkets, two cinemas, (In either order) three cafes and four churches. There isn’t a beach, a football stadium, a bus station or a castle. (In any order)
Instructions 1 Divide your class into pairs and give each student in the pair a copy of either the A or B map. They should not show these to each other. 2 Explain that each student in the pair has a map of a different town. Without looking at each other’s maps, they should work out what places their partner’s town has. They should do this by asking questions such as ‘Is there a swimming pool in your town?’, and answering using positive or negative statements (‘Yes, there is’ / ‘No, there isn’t’). In some cases, they will need to specify how many such places there are (for example, ‘Is there a supermarket?’ ‘Yes, there are three’).
B There is a bus station, a beach, a football stadium, a cinema and a castle. (In any order) There are two cafes, two churches, (In either order) three supermarkets and four parks. There isn’t a river, a swimming pool or a train station (In any order).
3 Students should write their answers in the gapped sentences at the bottom of their activity sheet. The first gap is for them to write their partner’s name. 4 Give students 10–15 minutes then check answers. The student pairs can award themselves one point for each word correctly placed in their gapped sentences: the pair with the most points is the winner.
