Welcome to Macomb
It is truly my pleasure to take this opportunity to welcome you to Macomb, a great place to live, work, shop and learn. We’re glad you’re here!
If you are looking to make Macomb your new home, we have a great quality of life that we are anxious to share. Our neighborhoods range from new construction to turn-of-the-century Victorian homes and Macomb’s educational opportunities are outstanding. Our school district is committed to offering the highest quality education and Macomb is home to two institutions of higher learning: Spoon River College and Western Illinois University (WIU). WIU has a decade long tradition of being nationally recognized as a “Best Midwestern University”. Cultural and family-oriented events are scheduled year-round, both in our Historic Downtown and on WIU’s campus, for residents and visitors!
Macomb is also home to one of the region’s premier medical facilities, McDonough District Hospital (MDH). The hospital has recently completed two significant projects designed to ensure quality medical care for our residents; an Emergency Department expansion as well as opening a new wing dedicated to Women’s Health and an enhanced Obstetrics/Birthing experience. As well as a new drive through Laboratory testing facility, to ensure ease of access to those services. MDH has a long, rich tradition of bringing quality and diverse medical care to Macomb and the surrounding area.
We have an outstanding manufacturing base, which includes Pella Windows, NTN-Bower Corporation and Yetter Manufacturing Corporation. If you are a prospective new business owner, we have several thriving and developing commercial corridors. Our Historic Downtown area, has recently seen a $6 million complete facelift and is filled with a variety of shops and restaurants, making an attractive and pedestrian friendly environment. Macomb, being the county seat for McDonough County, is home to the McDonough County Courthouse located in the center of the Historic Downtown square. Within walking distance of the downtown area is Macomb’s City Hall,
the Amtrak Station, Western Illinois Museum, a recently expanded Macomb Public Library and historic Chandler Park, which is the setting for many of our annual outdoor events, including Heritage Days and Dickens on the Square.
We’re connected—both virtually and literally! We have great telecommunication and broadband services! We have a robust ground transportation connection via the 4-lane Chicago to Kansas City Expressway (IL110) as well as twice daily connection to Chicago via AMTRAK; an award-winning Mass Transit system Go West and an award-winning general aviation airport.
If you are visiting Macomb, either for personal reasons or on business, please take time to browse through the local merchant’s shops, enjoy one of the many restaurants and contemplate how your visit might turn into an inquiry about a move to make Macomb - a picturesque, Midwestern community - your new home. There is a lot in store for Macomb as we continue to move forward and attract business and industry to the area.
I hope you enjoy Macomb and come to appreciate its uniqueness and quality of life. Without a doubt, this is an exciting time to be in Macomb. I extend to you a heartfelt and enthusiastic WELCOME!!
Sincerely,
Michael J. Inman, Mayor

Lafayette St.): The first of the mural series is a colorful display that pays tribute to both the history of Macomb, pop culture, and the Old Dairy Cafe itself. Western Illinois Museum Mural (201 S. Lafayette St.): The Western Illinois Museum is home to the nationally known muralist and Macomb native Tanner Woodford’s “What You Feed Will Grow” masterpiece, which stays true to his traditionally optimistic and typographical style. C. T. Vivian: Life of a Servant Leader Mural (135 N. Randolph St.): In recognition of one of Macomb’s greatest legacies, the work displayed honors the late Rev. Dr. C. T. Vivian, a community legend and revered leading activist in The Civil Rights Movement. MBA 50th Anniversary Mural (221 N. Randolph St.): In recognition of their 50th anniversary, the Macomb Beautiful Association Mural was unveiled in June 2022 on the North side of the Gelsosomo’s Pizza building. The design depicts a scenic rural farm setting and reflects the beautiful community and its many talented residents. Stronger Together Mural (405 N. Prairie Ave.): This community-painted mural, displayed at Prairieview Townhomes, promotes the power and strength of diversity. Sports Corner Mural: Depicting a larger-than-life version of a bookshelf filled with memorabilia, artist Bill Howard illustrates the history of regional athletics, gaming, sports, and leisure on the East side of Sports Corner . It can be seen on the side of the Sports Corner @ 124 (124 N. Randolph St.). Veterans Memorial Mural – Artist Bill Howard displays a tribute to
our American Military Veterans on the wall of Western Illinois University’s Hanson Field. Additionally, there is the urban inspired spray paint mural on the side of the building at 116 W. Jackson St.; adding a pop of color to the adjacent public, downtown parking area. .
Rocky on Parade
www.wiu.edu/vpaps/rocky_ on_parade
Presented by Western Illinois University College of Fine Arts and Communication, Rocky on Parade is a public art project displayed throughout Macomb that is modeled after many successful community-wide art projects such as Chicago’s Cows on Parade. Using a design similar to WIU’s iconic Rocky sculpture located near Hanson Field on the Macomb Campus, the bulldogs are cast in fiberglass and selected artists work to transform the sculptures into colorful, eye-catching masterpieces. Each statue is proudly featured at local businesses around the city and has become a can’t-miss photo opportunity for visitors and locals alike.

Jeff Hamer
Jeff Hamer’s Macomb story begins in 1996 when he transferred to Western Illinois University (WIU) to complete his Law Enforcement and Justice Administration (LEJA) degree. He planned to graduate and head back to the suburbs, but he genuinely fell in love with the quiet town. He would often explain to friends back home about the friendliness of the people in Macomb and the great schools.
Hamer graduated in 1998 with a degree in LEJA and Sociology and began working at the McDonough County Jail, progressing to the Macomb Police Department after a few years. For the next 23 years, Hamer rose through the ranks and assumed the top office of Chief of Police in

Patti Nemec
Born and raised in Highland Park, Illinois, Patti first came to Macomb to attend Western Illinois University (WIU). After graduating from WIU, she and her husband Allen pursued long satisfying careers in the area and now enjoy active retirement in Macomb. Community involvement is an important focus of Patti’s lifestyle; that includes the well-being of animals in need.
As a lifelong animal lover, it was a perfect fit when Patti attended the “organizational” meeting of the Humane Society of McDonough County (HSMC) in the early 1980’s and learned of their plans and goals. She and Allen immediately became active members, serving as officers and board directors for many years early on and helping develop the organization in its infancy. They proudly remain strong supporters, active members, and fundraising advocates for the amazing HSMC that the organization has grown into, serving area animals and their families today. Patti’s most active position in her work with the HSMC is chairperson of the annual “Brix Chal-
lenge.” In 2013 she was surprised by a phone call from a fellow animal lover, Chris Brix, who wanted to start a community fundraiser for the HSMC with the committed gift of $1,000. Patti came up with the Brix Challenge. Because of the tremendous generosity of HSMC members, local media, businesses, caring citizens, and supporters of the HSMC’s never-ending and committed work, the Brix Challenge has been enormously successful in raising funds for the HSMC’s annual budget for the past ten years. It takes a lot of revenue daily to assist animals and make a difference in their lives. The success of the Brix Challenge helps guarantee that the HSMC’s important initiatives and support programs continue without interruption.
Many people do not realize that the Humane Society of McDonough County is a separate organization from the McDonough County Animal Shelter. The HSMC is a group of volunteers whose work is solely dependent on revenue from memberships, donations, and gifts. The HSMC works in partnership with the county and a large portion of the HSMC’s tireless work is devoted to support the county-run animal shelter. Aside from providing direct support to the McDonough County Animal Shelter on an ongoing basis, the HSMC provides many additional services, programs and assistance to animals and pet owners in the area. They are currently raising funds for a new and much needed animal shelter for McDonough County. The new McDonough County Animal Shelter will be a 21st century facility that will not only accommodate the needs of lost and homeless animals, but will also be an inviting place for community members to find a new pet, volunteer, and access resources. Assisting animals in need daily requires an enormous amount of time, energy, commitment and resources. The HSMC does a fantastic job with that. Her passionate love of animals makes Patti’s support of the HSMC a rewarding part of her life.
Although Patti and Allen spend their time between Nevada and Illinois now, she always loves coming home to Macomb. The small town atmosphere, relaxed lifestyle, wonderful sense of community, and special friends here suit her lifestyle well.

Lynne Campbell
Lynne is the owner of the Community News Brief newspaper. She began her career in newspaper sales at the Macomb Journal in 1981. Although Lynne began her career in advertising and marketing, she has also worked in circulation and distribution, graphic design, and news. Throughout her career she has worked at several newspapers in both Illinois and Colorado, always moving up the ranks into management positions. She became a Regional Ad Director and eventually Regional Publisher for GateHouse, overseeing 18 newspapers in Southern Illinois, where she received numerous awards for sales, sales management and overall excellence.
In 2017, Lynne, along with her husband Tony and daughter Tabitha, began the Community News Brief in Macomb to fill a need for local news, featuring events and people.
Beginning as a “FREE newsletter” delivered to over 77 locations throughout the Macomb community and McDonough County 3 days per week, the Community News Brief quickly expanded to become the area’s source for all news that is local.
In 2021, the Community News Brief flourished into a very successful Weekly Newspaper, morphing the Friday free publication into a subscription paper and expanded the writing staff to feature more local news, meeting coverage, events, high school sports and entertainment. In 2023, the Community News Brief expanded into a bi-weekly publication, still keeping one FREE publication, now named the MIDWEEK. The newspaper continues to grow week over week, it hasn’t slowed and the quality and number of local stories and coverage has only improved along with its writers.
Lynne has received the Business Leader of the Year award in 2022 and was nominated for the Business of the Year from the Macomb Area Chamber of Commerce.
She is a member of the Who’s Who in American Business, Illinois Press Association, Bushnell VFW Auxiliary, Bushnell Chamber of Commerce, General Macomb Chapter of the DAR, Quality of Life committee, an Investor in the McDonough County CEO Entrepreneurship Program and currently sits on the Board of the Macomb Area Economic Development Corportation, Macomb Area Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club of Macomb where she is President Elect and a Paul Harris Fellow.
Lynne is married to husband Tony and has three children; Tiffany (Kevin) Porter, Tabitha (Kory) Palm and Tyler (Ashley) Campbell, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Tim Rice
Originally from the Milwaukee area, Tim and his wife, Kim have called Macomb home since 2012. Upon arriving, Tim quickly started TJR Designs (@ tjrdesigns) as a way to support the community. Tim’s work has been seen all over Macomb through logo design and branding, print and promotional products, and web and social media marketing. When Tim is not designing, he can be seen spending time with his son, Cade, and daughter, Della, bouncing between dance, Jiu Jitsu, and swimming lessons, or strumming his guitar and stretching his vocal cords with Odd Fellows (@oddfellowsmacomb) and Wesley United Methodist Church Praise Band.
Tim states, “Macomb is a special place to me because the community is family here. Wherever you go, you get a wave or hello. This town has enabled me to live out my dreams and successfully own and operate a business, while also being able to grow our family.”

History of Macomb/McDonough County
Macomb was first settled in 1829 on a site tentatively named Washington. Officially founded in 1830, it was given the name Macomb after General Alexander Macomb of the War of 1812. With a population boom brought on by the emerging railroad industry, Macomb is still a proud Amtrak community to this day bringing local and visitors alike to the heart of Downtown Macomb.
More than just a rich agricultural area or a vibrant university town, Macomb and the McDonough County region are filled with a vibrant history and notable figures. Macomb archives are packed full of stories of famous visitors, such as Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, and Barak Obama, who have all made signifi-
cant stops in Macomb as part of their political careers.
Macomb is known for our Midwest hospitality and there is no greater example of our hometown pride than Macomb native, minister, author, and civil rights pioneer, Rev. Dr. Cordy Tindell “C.T.” Vivian. A distinguished leader and organizer in the Civil Rights Movement, Vivian paved the way for future activists and opportunities for justice through sit ins, educational speeches, and a lifelong passion for equality. His likeness is commemorated on a 75-foot mural depicting his legacy, along with a city street bearing his name, and future plans for a community center and park at his childhood home.
Besides hosting several dignitaries, Macomb is also a great place to play. Macomb born actress, writer, poet, inventor, and pioneering feminist, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Magie-Phillips created

what has now become the most popular board game in the world, known as Monopoly. Her original 1903 Landlord’s Game was later sold to Parker Brothers and has become a global sensation. Macomb has officially proclaimed May 9th, Lizzie’s birthday as “Lizzie Magie Day.”
Macomb is also a community with a unique sense of humor. In the late 1960s, a group of concerned citizens dubbed a sixteen-county section of west-central Illinois “Forgottonia” in protest of the lack of state and federal investment in highways and other infrastructure in the region.
What started as a tongue-in-cheek name grew into a satirical movement by the early 1970s, when Forgottonia leaders appointed a governor, selected a capital, and threatened secession so they could declare war, immediately surrender, and then petition for foreign aid. They even had their own flag: the white flag of surrender.
Thanks in part to these efforts, our region now enjoys a passenger train route to Chicago and an improved system of bridges and highways that allow for easier access to our little slice of Illinois.
Over the years, Forgottonia has come to stand for the deep connection the people of west-central Illinois feel to our region and the playful and irreverent refusal to let ourselves be forgotten.
These are just a few examples of the many people, places, and stories who have worked their way into the culture of
the community that is now called Macomb. We invite you to explore our city streets, rural areas, and famed landmarks to get the change to embrace the past and admire how it continues to shape our region for years to come.
McDonough County is named in honor of Thomas Macdonough who defeated a British squadron in the decisive naval battle of Lake Champlain in the War of 1812. The county has the unique distinction of forming a perfect square on a map, with Macomb in the center. With over 590 square miles; McDonough County includes the cities of Bushnell, Colchester, and Macomb; as well as the villages of Bardolph, Blandinsville, Good Hope, Industry, Plymouth, Prairie City, Sciota, and Tennessee. Each individual town, regardless of population, boasts their own charms and pride in their pasts.
