Greetings from the Macomb Area Chamber of Commerce!
Thank you for picking up a copy of the Macomb Area Community Guide & Business Directory! Throughout its pages you will find everything you need to know about area events and attractions, education, healthcare, parks, recreation, Macomb history, and more. There is also a business directory, listed alphabetically and by category, to make it easier to find the business you are looking for. We want this guide to serve as a vital resource; whether you are a long-time resident, are new to the area, or are a visitor to Macomb.
The Macomb Area Chamber of Commerce is a membership organization that serves as a link between area businesses, organizations, and the community. Our members benefit and thrive because of the strength and stability we provide through advertising and networking opportunities, referrals, quality programming, events, and educational advantages. This guide is one of many of these benefits.
The Chamber also runs a widely popular Chamber Gift Certificate program. We keep nearly $200,000 of local spending in our community every year! Gift certificates can be purchased in any denomination, they never expire, and make excellent gifts. You can purchase them at the Chamber office, MidAmerica National Bank, Citizen’s Bank, Fortress Bank, United Community Bank, and First Bankers Trust Company.
I encourage you to explore what Macomb has to offer this year. There is exceptional shopping, top notch restaurants to suit any cravings, phenomenal parks, and a variety of events and activities throughout the year.
If you ever need assistance or have questions, please feel free to contact the Chamber at (309) 837-4855 or e-mail me at lauren@macombareachamber.com

Welcome to Macomb
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to Macomb, a great place to live, work, shop and learn. We’re glad you’re here!
If you are looking to make Macomb your new home, we have a great quality of life that we are anxious to share. Our neighborhoods range from new construction to turn-of-the-century Victorian homes and Macomb’s educational opportunities are outstanding. Our school district is committed to offering the highest quality education and Macomb is home to two institutions of higher learning: Spoon River College and Western Illinois University (WIU). WIU has a decade long tradition of being nationally recognized as a “Best Midwestern University”. Cultural and family-oriented events are scheduled yearround, both in our Historic Downtown and on WIU’s campus, for residents and visitors!
Macomb is also home to one of the region’s premier medical facilities, McDonough District Hospital (MDH). The hospital has recently completed two significant projects designed to ensure quality medical care for our residents; an Emergency Department expansion as well as opening a new wing dedicated to Women’s Health and an enhanced Obstetrics/Birthing experience. As well as a new drive through testing facility, to enhance the ease of access to those services. MDH has a long, rich tradition of bringing quality and diverse medical care to Macomb and the surrounding area.
We have an outstanding manufacturing base, which includes Pella Windows, NTN-Bower Corporation and Yetter Manufacturing Corporation. If you are a prospective new business owner, we have several thriving and developing commercial corridors. Our Historic Downtown area, has recently seen a $4 million complete facelift and is filled with a variety of shops and restaurants, making an attractive and pedestrian friendly environment. Macomb, being the county seat for McDonough County, is home to the McDonough County Courthouse located in the center of the Historic Downtown square. Within walking distance of the downtown area is Macomb’s City Hall,
the Amtrak Station, Western Illinois Museum, a recently expanded Macomb Public Library and historic Chandler Park, which is the setting for many of our annual outdoor events.
We’re connected—both virtually and literally! We have great telecommunication and broadband services! We have a robust ground transportation connection via the 4-lane Chicago to Kansas City Expressway (IL110) as well as twice daily connection to Chicago via AMTRAK; an award-winning Mass Transit system Go West and an award-winning general aviation airport.
If you are visiting Macomb, either for personal reasons or on business, please take time to browse through the local merchant’s shops, enjoy one of the many restaurants and contemplate how your visit might turn into an inquiry about a move to make Macomb - a picturesque, Midwestern community - your new home. There is a lot in store for Macomb as we continue to move forward and attract business and industry to the area.
I hope you enjoy Macomb and come to appreciate its uniqueness and quality of life. Without a doubt, this is an exciting time to be in Macomb. I extend to you a heartfelt and enthusiastic WELCOME!!
Sincerely,
Michael J. Inman, Mayor

Jill Beck
McDonough County United Way Executive Director
Let’s leave it better than we found it. That’s the guiding philosophy of McDonough County United Way’s Jill Beck. Serving as Executive Director from 2009-2014, serving on the Board of Directors from 2015-2019 while working at Western Illinois University, and then returning to the United Way as Executive Director in 2019 to present, Beck sees many opportunities to make things better, one of those things being children’s literacy.
The Imagination Book Club (IBC) is a program through the McDonough County United Way providing children’s books to families in need each month. Beck says, “We know having age-appropriate reading material in the home is one of the largest factors in a child’s reading success, so why wouldn’t we get as many books as possible to families who need them?” Since it’s inception in 2020, Beck estimates over 10,000 books have been distributed in McDonough County.
The IBC continues to grow, thanks to generous sponsors and donors, with plans to increase the number of books distributed and communities served in McDonough County.
Exceeding the annual fundraising goal by $44,000 in 2022, Beck and her Board of Directors look toward making a difference to the fifteen local, non-profit agencies with which they partner. This success is due to a generous community who truly supports the mission of United Way: To better the Health, Income, and Education of those in need. Funds are raised by individual donations, corporate donations, payroll contributions and one of Beck’s favorites: Special Events.
The McDonough County United Way’s flagship event, Power of the Purse, was created by Beck in 2010 and has grown to a record setting $53,000 net profit in 2022. This ever-evolving event is loved by women and reflected in the sold-out attendance the last two years. Proceeds from this event, as well as all other United Way events, support the Partner Agencies, as well as the Imagination Book Club.
Jill is married to Ben Beck and has two sons, Ross and Emmett. She serves on the Macomb Airport Authority Board and the Macomb Bomber Boosters Board. You’ll find her doing what she can to leave it better than she found it by hauling children’s books, purses, and the occasional kid to practice.

He has served the McDonough County Quality of Life Committee and is currently the chair. Upon moving to Macomb, Kelly joined the Macomb Area Christian Minister’s Association and is now the convener. With all the community conversations that have recently taken place on race, he has been an active participant. Kelly has also been trained and serves as a first responder chaplain, primarily for the Macomb Fire Department.
A few years ago, First Christian Church joined with other faith traditions to promote peace and unity. The Interfaith Alliance of Macomb was birthed. Kelly provides leadership and was a key figure in the Love Only sign campaign to promote inclusivity in Macomb. During Kelly’s tenure, First Christian Church has offered many community programs including Fall Festival, Egg Glow (a glow in the dark Easter egg hunt), and Santa Party for persons with special needs each December. The church has created a new experiential worship service called Xperience on Sunday evenings at 6:30 pm. First Christian Church has also established the 24-hour Emergency Cupboard to ensure that no one goes hungry in the community.
More recently, First Christian Church received a $125K anonymous gift. Having spent a large amount of money on building renovations, Kelly suggested an idea to church leadership. Through conversations with the donor, Board and Elder leadership, Operation Generosity became a reality. More than half the funds were distributed to the church’s participants to give to charities/organizations of their
choosing. People gave to many school organizations and local charities like Western Illinois Regional Council, the Humane Society, Salvation Army, Good Food Collaborative, WIU food pantry, and many others. People also gave to minority business owners, bought groceries for individuals, and provided large tips for servers.
Remaining funds for Operation Generosity were divided in five ways. The largest portion has been used to help with immediate needs for community members (rent assistance, water, electric bills, etc.). A scholarship fund was created at Spoon River Community College to assist with financial needs for certificate program students. Checks were written to area daycare facilities to provide for families struggling to pay their tuition. First Christian Church is a large supporter of international students so monies were provided for the International Student Closet at WIU. Lastly, the church joined many community partners to create the large-scale youth event Race 2 Grace.
Kelly and Anne are loving dog parents to Macy and have a number of nephews and nieces in Indiana and Oklahoma they often spoil. They have been married for 26 years. Kelly is grateful for the love and support he receives from Anne. None of his work is possible without her. Kelly has also truly enjoyed being a part of the Macomb community and looks forward to future endeavors.

History of Macomb
Macomb was first settled in 1829 on a site tentatively named Washington. Officially founded in 1830, it was given the name Macomb after General Alexander Macomb of the War of 1812. With a population boom brought on by the emerging railroad industry, Macomb is still a proud Amtrak community to this day bringing local and visitors alike to the heart of Downtown Macomb.
More than just a rich agricultural area or a vibrant university town, Macomb and the McDonough County region are filled with rich history and notable figures. Macomb archives are packed full of stories of famous visitors, such as Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, and Barak Obama, who have all made significant stops in Macomb as part of their political careers.
Macomb is known for our Midwest hospitality and there is no greater example of our hometown pride than Macomb native, minister, author, and civil rights pioneer, Rev. Dr. Cordy Tindell “C.T.” Vivian. A distinguished leader and organizer in the Civil Rights Movement, Vivian paved the way for future activists and opportunities for justice through sit ins, educational speeches, and a lifelong passion for equality. His likeness is commemorated on a 75-foot mural depicting his legacy, along with a city street bearing his name, and future plans for a community center and park at his childhood home.
Besides hosting several dignitaries, Macomb is also a great place to play. Macomb born actress, writer, poet, inventor, and pioneering feminist, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Magie-Phillips created what has now become the most popular board game in the world, known as Monopoly. Her original 1903 Landlord’s Game was later sold to Parker Brothers and has become a global sensation. Macomb has officially proclaimed May 9th, Lizzie’s birthday as “Lizzie Magie Day.”
Macomb is also a community with a unique sense of humor. In the late 1960s, a group of concerned citizens dubbed a sixteen-county section of west-central Illinois “Forgottonia” in protest of the lack of state and federal investment in highways and other infrastructure in the region.
What started as a tongue-in-cheek name grew into a satirical movement by the early 1970s, when Forgottonia leaders appointed a governor, selected a capital, and threatened secession so they could declare war, immediately surrender, and then petition for foreign aid. They even had their own flag: the white flag of surrender.
Thanks in part to these efforts, our region now enjoys a passenger train route to Chicago and an improved system of
bridges and highways that allow for easier access to our little slice of Illinois.
Over the years, Forgottonia has come to stand for the deep connection the people of west-central Illinois feel to our region and the playful and irreverent refusal to let ourselves be forgotten.
These are just a few examples of the many people, places, and stories who have worked their way into the culture of the community that is now called Macomb. We invite you to explore our city streets, rural areas, and famed landmarks to get the chance to embrace the past and admire how it continues to shape our region for years
