CHAMBER UPDATE MERRITT GRADUATES FROM U.S. CHAMBER FOUNDATION EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM Fellowship Provides State and Local Business Leaders with Opportunities to Engage Nationally on Critical Education and Workforce Issues WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Friday, January 26, Lauren Merritt, Executive Director of the Macomb Area Chamber of Commerce graduated from the eighth cohort of its premier business leadership program. The Business Leads Fellowship Program trains and equips leaders from state and local chambers of commerce, economic development agencies, and trade associations with resources, access to experts, and a network of peers to build their capacity to address the most pressing education and workforce challenges. “It was a true honor to be a part of the Business Leads Fellowship Program,” says Merritt. “I learned a great deal and built relationships with workforce development experts, as well as other chamber leaders from across the country. I plan to take these resources and put them to work in our community so we can address our talent pipeline management needs.” “We created the Business Leads Fellowship Program in response to the needs of our state and local chamber partners,” says Cheryl Oldham, Senior Vice President of the Center for Education and Workforce. “They, better than anyone, see the critical link between education and economic development, and we are glad to be able to support them as they take on this critical leadership role in their community.”

Lauren Merritt receives her certificate of completion for the Business Leads Fellowship Program from Caitlin Codella Low - Vice President, Policy and Programs at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

Following a competitive application and selection process, Merritt was selected along with 34 other state and local chamber executives, economic development professionals, and association leaders to participate in the eighth class of this program. The six-month program, consisting of both in person and virtual meetings, covered the entire talent pipeline, including early childhood education, K-12, postsecondary education, and workforce development. Upon graduation, Business Leads Fellows join the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s dedicated network of over 300 chambers of commerce and statewide associations from around the nation who regularly engage on education and workforce initiatives. For more information on the Business Leads Fellowship Program, visit the program’s website.

Hi Chamber Members, We’re a month into 2024 and some of those New Years resolutions are still going strong (Congratulations!), while others were simply just a thought we saw on a flashy Instagram story somewhere but we scrolled right past (that’s okay too). We can all agree that it might be time to refresh, reset, and recenter ourselves. So can we talk about the 2024 career goal elephant in the room? NETWORKING. Stay with me here. I get it. I'm an introvert by nature, with social anxiety, and large groups just aren't my scene. The thought of having to introduce myself and make small talk can sometimes be crippling; but I also remember 2020 and if that taught me anything, it’s that Zoom meetings and social media just don't have the same connection as talking with someone face to face. We are blessed with a very welcoming, warm business community and if you just jump in - they’ll be ready to greet you with a smile. I see it happen every month at our Chamber events and it’s nothing short of amazing. Let’s help you become a part of it. So if you are like me and the thought of putting yourself out there is a little intimidating; I promise we can do it together. Come find me in the crowd. We'll take deep breaths, we’ll get brave, and we'll be glad we went after all. We can do this! Contact me any time. No idea is too small and no question is too weird. Let’s help you find the information and resources you need to be your best business self. Let’s make it a great month!
