Shasta Fire Safe Council co-coordinator Dale Nova says he doesn’t care that some people might see him as Chicken Little because of the way he has been sounding the alarm for so long about the potential of a disastrous wildfire in the Mount Shasta area. “The sky has already fallen,” Nova said. “The sky fell in Weed and Hornbrook, in Redding and Paradise, and in a lot of other places. The point I want to make is how important it is for people to get past apathy and ignorance and develop defensible space around their homes.” The Boles Fire in Weed in 2014 and the 2018 Klamathon Fire in Hornbrook, Carr Fire in Redding, and Camp Fire in Paradise are among numerous destructive wildfires that have impacted northern California in recent years. Nova says most communities in Siskiyou County still have a long way to go to be considered “Firewise,” but Somes Bar and Forks of Salmon are the closest, while Mt. Shasta has “a jump start.” Firewise Communities is a “national level program that teaches people how to adapt to living with wildfire and encourages neighbors to work together and take actions now to prevent losses,” as stated in the current draft of Siskiyou County’s Community Wildfire Protection Plan. “Defensible space” is mentioned often in that Plan. It is a buffer that property owners create and maintain between their structures and the grass, trees, shrubs and any wildlands surrounding those structures. Siskiyou County and California law require a minimum of 100 feet of defensible space on all sides of any structure. Of the five most important actions residents can take to protect their homes from wildfire, Nova lists creating defensible space as number one. “The primary responsibility of a structure withstanding wildfire lies with the propertyowner,” is a statement highlighted in red text in the draft Community Wildfire Protection Plan. Nova’s list of suggested actions everyone should take to protect their homes includes: ◼◼ Trimming and separating plants and shrubs to stop wildfire from spreading; ◼◼ Removing ladder fuels, including tree limbs that are close to the ground, whether those limbs are green or dead. (On large trees, the lowest limbs should be 6 to 10 feet above the ground; on small trees, take off the lowest 30 percent of limbs); ◼◼ Clearing 5 feet around the base of houses and other structures and filling it with fire resistant plants or rocks and gravel; and ◼◼ “Most important,” according to Nova, is maintaining the 100 feet of open space around structures after it’s been created. To avoid the cost of taking that material to the dump, Nova suggests cutting and burning. “Now is a great time to do fuel reduction,” he said of the early spring. When burning in a yard, he said it’s important to maintain 10 feet of clear space around burn piles, keep the piles less than 4 feet in height, and follow guidelines on burn permits that are available from cities, Siskiyou County, and CAL FIRE. Nova says the most important thing is preventing fire from getting close to structures “by creating more Firewise neighborhoods.” He stresses the point that one home or a few homes won’t make a neighborhood fire safe, so everyone needs to get involved. The Firewise program (www.firewise.org) is one of several wildfire preparedness programs mentioned in the Community Wildfire Protection Plan, which is an extensive document that details fire danger and fire safety efforts throughout the county.
