Just nine miles off I-5, on the southern slope of Mt. Shasta, a small mountain town hums with the contented buzz of a beehive. Enshrouded in forest, tempered by valley and nestled against beautiful waterways, the idyllic world of McCloud resists the shadow of commercialization. Archeological studies indicate that the indigenous nation of Winnemem Wintu, or “Middle Water People,” were the first humans to inhabit the McCloud River area, spanning at least 6,000 years. Long before modern bloggers, retirees and spiritualists sought the peace beneath the looming white giant to the North, the Winnemem Wintu believed McCloud’s healing coordinates to be sacred. Over the course of time, the remarkable region commanded the attentions of legendary writers and explorers, including naturalists such as John Muir, and his contemporary, the “Poet of the Sierras” Joaquin Miller, as well as the celebrated literary ilk of Bram Stoker.

Following the 1890s construction of its original sawmill, the introduction of the McCloud River Railroad, and the McCloud River Lumber Company, McCloud drew prominence; its prosperity protected by the omnipotent “Mother McCloud,” a reference bore of the Mill’s gentle yet firm hand over employee affairs. When timber and rail industries came to a screeching halt in the early 2000s, this pocket of paradise rallied to transform a commerce built solely on lumber and locomotive, to a robust reserve bolstered by tourism. McCloud survives as a remnant of untouched frontier, earmarking a Nationally Registered Historic District with 17 designated landmarks, and offering incomparable sections of real estate. Heritage abounds from its restored buildings, unique architectural features, and a Museum lovingly tended by its diligent rotation of volunteers.
