This is the film where it all began, when we first met the famous orphan, Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe), based on the novels by J.K. Rowling. Harry Potter is an ordinary 11-yearold boy but serves as a sort of slave for his aunt and uncle who have taken him in after his mother and father were killed. His life dramatically changes when he learns that he is actually a wizard and has been invited to attend the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. Famous for an incident that happened at his birth, he makes friends easily at his new school. He soon finds, however, that the wizarding world is far more dangerous for him than he would have imagined. Starring the late Richard Harris as Dumbledore and Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid.
After the first introduction to Harry Potter in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, this sequel is where the main story line really starts to be told. During the summer holidays Harry gets a real shock when he gets a surprise visitor: Dobby the house-elf, who warns Harry against returning to Hogwarts, as terrible things are going to happen. Harry ignores this warning and returns to Hogwarts, only to find out Dobby may be right as he starts to hear haunting voices from inside the walls. Things get worse as muggle-born students start being attacked, and a message scrawled on the wall in blood puts everyone on his/her guard. Starring Kenneth Branagh and Jason Isaacs.
It's Harry's third year at Hogwarts. Not only does he have a new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Professor Lupin, but there is also trouble brewing. Convicted murderer Sirius Black (Gary Oldman) has escaped the Wizards' Prison and is coming after Harry. Believed to have been the right-hand-man of the dark wizard Voldemort, whom Harry mysteriously rendered powerless during his infancy, some of those closest to Harry suspect Black has returned to exact revenge on the boy who defeated his master. Meanwhile if that wasn’t enough, the soul-sucking guards of Azkaban prison have been employed at Hogwarts to protect the students, but their mere presence sends Harry into crippling fainting spells. Starring David Thewlis as Remus Lupin.

Harry’s wondering why his legendary scar, the famous result of a death curse gone wrong, is aching in pain. But before he can think too much about it summer is over and it is time to go back to Hogwarts. Shortly after his reunion with Ron and Hermione, Harry's wishes for an uneventful school year are almost immediately shattered when he is unexpectedly chosen along with Cedric Diggory as Hogwarts' representative in the Tri-Wizard Tournament. Meanwhile, unknown to Harry, Lord Voldemort is anticipating the tournament as well. Starring Ralph Fiennes, Miranda Richardson and David Tennant.
After a lonely summer on Privet Drive Harry returns to Hogwarts full of ill-fortune. Few students and parents believe him that Voldemort is really back. The ministry had decided to step in by appointing a new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher Dolores Umbridge (Imelda Staunton) that proves to be the nastiest person Harry has ever encountered. Harry also has frightening dreams that he can't explain, and what is Voldemort searching for? Harry begins one of his toughest years at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Starring Daniel Radcliffe, Ralph Fiennes and Helena Bonham Carter.

It’s been a long time since Hogwarts was thought of as a safe haven, now that Voldemort is sending out Death Eaters to terrorise London, and has chosen Draco Malfoy for a secret mission. Suspecting that the castle may even harbour an outright threat, Harry finds his investigation into the matter sidelined by Dumbledore's attempts to prepare him for the monumental battle looming ever closer on the horizon. It doesn't get any easier, since Voldemort is nearing the height of his powers, and his bidders have infiltrated the bureaucracy to paint Harry as a wanted criminal. This anticipated film from France has just been given its UK release date after many acclaimed reviews from last year’s Cannes Festival. Anna, played by Clara Augarde, is a floweringly beautiful 14year-old girl who comes home from her boarding school for the summer to find that her father, Paul (Thierry Neuvic), has left the family home for another woman. Her mother, Jeanne (Lio), now conceives a miserable, neurotic jealousy of Anna's youth and beauty, and also becomes romantically infatuated with the priest preparing Anna for her imminent confirmation.
22-year-old Xavier Dolan directs and stars in this talky triangle of love, set in Frenchspeaking Quebec. He is Francis, a gay man who is best friends with Maria (Monia Chokri). She is straight, but their friendship is tested severely when they both conceive a passion for a new kid on the block: gorgeous, blonde Nicolas (Niels Schneider). They are mad about the boy. But Nicolas, perhaps almost without realising it, has a genius for teasing and manipulating them. Mon 4 Jul 7.30pm
Winner of awards at the Cannes and Cairo Film festival, the film charts the journey of a Palestinian mother and son as they begin a new life in Amreeka, the Palestinian word for America. Single mum Mouna’s and her 16-year-old son Fadi’s (Melkar Muallem) lives change dramatically when Mouna finally succeeds at getting a green card. The two fly from Jerusalem to Chicago, but get a bitter taste of the reality behind the American dream when they both come up against Western prejudices. Partly drawn from the director's own experiences, this is a defiantly upbeat film, that champions on it’s characters rather than sympathising with them. Also starring Alia Shawkat and Melkar Muallem. Nominated for the prestigious Golden Lion at the 2010 Venice Film Festival, 13 Assassins is a film from Japan’s most prolific film maker Takashi Miike, best known in Britain for the audacious psychological thriller Audition. Set in 1844, the vicious Lord Naritsugu is a sychotic sadist threatening the stability of the realm. He has to be destroyed, and only a team of dedicated samurai can achieve this. After training of this elite group by the stately warrior Shinzaem, 13 honourable assassins ambush Lord Naritsugu and his vast entourage, a virtual army seven times their number, and an epic encounter ensues. Julia (Belen Rueda, The Orphange) and her sister Sara have both inherited a medical condition that is slowly robbing them of their eyesight, with stress severely aggravating the condition. When Julia gets the news that Sara has died, she has a hard time believing the police report that she committed suicide, and begins her search for the truth.
From the director of Days of Glory, Outside the Law is a historical and epic struggle for Algerian independence through the eyes of three brothers. After losing their family home in Algeria, three brothers and their mother are scattered across the globe. Messaoud joins the French army fighting in Indochina, Abdelkader becomes a leader of the Algerian independence movement in France and Sa誰d moves to Paris to make his fortune in the shady clubs and boxing halls of Pigalle. Gradually their interconnecting destinies reunite them in the French capital, where freedom is a battle to be fought and won. Starring Jamel Debbouze, Roschdy Zem, Sami Bouajila.

Winner of four awards at the Berlin Film Festival this year, including a Golden Berlin Bear and the Silver Berlin Bear for Best Actor and Actress, A Separation tells the story of Nadar (Peyman Moaadi) and Simin (Leila Hatami), who argue about living abroad. Simin prefers to live abroad to provide better opportunities for their only daughter, Termeh. However, Nader refuses to go because he thinks he must stay in Iran and take care of his father (Ali-Asghar Shahbazi), who suffers from Alzheimers. Gerard Depardieu is Mammuth, who has just turned 60 and is about to retire from his job in the slaughterhouse. Unfortunately, his earlier employers have never done the requisite paperwork, mostly to avoid paying more taxes, and now he must go off in search of companies and managers who employed him 30 or 40 years earlier. His transportation is his classic Mammuth motorcycle, a relic of the 1970s and the source of his nickname. A series of often sour, but very funny encounters ensue until he meets up with his oddball artistic niece, who resuscitates him sexually and brings out the poet that he supposedly has always kept hidden inside. Coppola's visually beautiful, groundbreaking masterpiece with surrealistic and symbolic sequences is detailing the confusion, violence, fear and nightmarish madness of the Vietnam War. Just re-released in a new print, Apocalypse Now is seen as by many as not merely the greatest film to come out of the Vietnam experience, but one of the great works about the madness of our times. A true classic starring a mammoth list of Hollywood greats including Marlon Brandon, Martin Sheen, Robert Duvall, Dennis Hopper and Harrison Ford.
In this cult movie a mentally unstable Vietnam War veteran works as night time taxi driver in a city whose perceived decadence and sleaze feeds his urge to violently lash out, attempting to save a teenage prostitute in the process. Starring the young Robert De Niro, Jodie Foster and Cybil Sheppard.
La Quattro Volte is a gem of art cinema and a miracle of animal-wrangling. Winner at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, this beautiful movie is almost entirely wordless. Slow, precise and superbly filmed, with an almost respiratory sense of the rise and fall of the seasons and the rhythm of the countryside, it is set in a medieval village in Calabria in southern Italy. For the first hour the action could be taking place at any time over the past couple of centuries, and it is only in the final section that the film definitely locates the story in the present day. An old shepherd (Giuseppe Fuda) tends to his goats, who roam mesmerically all over the landscape and all over the screen. A gentle drama, beautiful, mysterious and funny.
Rose Bosch, France 2010, 115 min French with English Subtitles

This inspiring story of the power of education and the right to equality is something of a change of direction - and location - for Justin Chadwick, best known for tackling British period dramas such as Bleak House and The Other Boleyn Girl. Set in Kenya in 2003, The First Grader is the story of Maruge (Oliver Litondo), an 84-year-old village elder who uses a government initiative to introduce free primary schooling to claim the education he has always craved.

A superhero film based on the comic book character of the same name. In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds), a gifted and cocky test pilot who may prove to be not only the key to defeating Parallax. He will become the greatest Green Lantern of all. Co-starring Blake Lively and Peter Sarsgaard.
Robert Redford focuses on the chaotic moment in history directly following President Lincoln's assassination to tell the story of the proud mother (Robin Wright) charged with committing the monumental crime, and the ambitious young lawyer who reluctantly becomes her defence attorney. The Civil War has ended, and upon returning home, Union War hero Frederick Aiken (James McAvoy) endeavours to enter the world of politics by establishing himself as a lawyer. A powerful political drama, co-starring Kevin Kline, Alexis Bledel, Evan Rachel Wood and Justin Long.

Among them is Erik Lensherr, his best friend, and future archenemy. Discovering their powers for the first time they are working together with other Mutants to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In a dingy London flat, Warren (Johnny Harris) watches videos of his heroes Morecambe and Wise and practises fielding abuse from hecklers. Clark (Noel Clarke) is a waiter in a Greek restaurant, where he gets to hang out with former EastEnders star Michelle Ryan and entertain kids with his glove puppet act. They meet during an open mic night at the Stoker's Hole, where Warren's faltering performance is rescued by Clark's timely intervention. Warren and Clark: a comedy legend is born. Look out for basically every famous comedian in the country -- they all have cameo appearances. Also starring Ralph Brown.
Oliver (Ewen McGregor) is rocked by two announcements from his elderly father Hal (Christopher Plummer): that he has terminal cancer, and that he has a young male lover. When Hal dies, Oliver is left to contemplate his life, their relationship, and all the poor choices each of them had made up until this point. Oliver is happy that his father hasn't given up on life, and is finally pursuing true love, but he just can't forget the years of isolation and loneliness his mother went through.
The Tree of Life is an impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950s. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of his childhood to his disillusioned adult years, as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack (Sean Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life, while questioning the existence of faith. But Jack realises that time, far from healing the wounds of loss, only makes them more painful. Fri 19 & Sun 21 Aug 5.15pm Sat 20 Aug 8.15pm

Pina is a feature-length dance film with the ensemble of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, featuring the unique and inspiring art of the great German choreographer, who died in the summer of 2009. Wenders takes the audience on a sensual, visually stunning journey of discovery into a new dimension as he follows the dancers out of the theatre into the city and the surrounding areas of Wuppertal, the place which for 35 years was the home and centre for Pina Bausch's creativity.
Captain Scott's doomed race to the South Pole is captured in a silent film from 1924, with a new score by Simon Fisher Turner. Part of the thrill watching Herbert Ponting's extraordinary record is knowing that its original audiences must have been watching at least some of these sights on film for the first time: killer whales, their dorsal fins menacing up from the sea, querulous penguins and fearsome crystal cliffs of ice. Ponting was the expedition's official photographer, and the BFI has spent years beautifully restoring his footage, which he edited into this silent feature film in 1924.
As Allen Ginsberg talks about his life and art, his most famous poem is illustrated in animation while the obscenity trial of the work is dramatized. It's San Francisco in 1957, and an American masterpiece is put on trial. Howl recounts this dark moment using three interwoven threads: the tumultuous life events that led a young Allen Ginsberg (James Franco) to find his true voice as an artist, society's reaction (the obscenity trial), and animation that echoes the poem's surreal style. All three coalesce in hybrid that dramatizes the birth of a counterculture.

Winner of Best Documentary at the 2011 Sundance Festival and one of the most anticipated films this year, Senna tells the story of the monumental life and tragic death of legendary Brazilian motor-racing Champion Ayrton Senna. Spanning the decade from his arrival in Formula One in the mid 80's, the film follows Senna's struggles both on track against his nemesis, French World Champion Alain Prost, and off it, against the politics which infest the sport. Yet he is struck down in his prime on the blackest weekend in the history of the sport, watched live on television by 300 million people.

In the late 1960s through to the 1970s a group of cyclists in Northern California's Marin County turned the bicycle world upside down. Some of these cyclists were Category-1 road racers looking for a new way to train during the off-season. Others were simply fun-loving hippies looking for a new way to commune with nature. It was from these humble beginnings that a multi-billion dollar industry, a form of recreation for the masses, and an Olympic event were born. These hefty steeds were affectionately known as Klunkerz.
