Ponyo is an animated adventure about the 5-year old Sosuke, who lives a quiet life on an oceanside cliff with his mother Lisa. One fateful day, he finds a beautiful goldfish trapped in a bottle on the beach and upon rescuing her, names her Ponyo. But she is no ordinary goldfish. The daughter of a masterful wizard and a sea goddess, Ponyo uses her father's magic to transform herself into a young girl and quickly falls in love with Sosuke, but the use of such powerful sorcery causes a dangerous imbalance in the world. As the moon steadily draws nearer to the earth and Ponyo's father sends the ocean's mighty waves to find his daughter, the two children embark on an adventure of a lifetime to save the world and fulfil Ponyo's dreams of becoming human.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a live-action adaptation of Jeff Kinney's illustrated novel about a wise-cracking sixth grade student, for whom middle school is the dumbest idea ever invented. It's a place rigged with hundreds of social landmines, not the least of which are morons, wedgies, swirlies, bullies and lunchtime banishment to the cafeteria floor. To survive the never-ending ordeal and attain the recognition and status he feels he so richly deserves, Greg devises an endless series of can't-miss schemes, all of which, of course, go awry.
Set in futuristic Metro City, Astro Boy is about a young robot with incredible powers created by a brilliant scientist in the image of the son he has lost. Unable to fulfil the grieving man's expectations, our hero embarks on a journey in search of acceptance, experiencing betrayal and a netherworld of robot gladiators, before he returns to save Metro City and reconcile with the father who had rejected him. The French Film Festival provides a glittering, stimulating and, at times, challenging array of titles at leading cinemas throughout the country every year. macrobert is proud to host the festival, now in its 18th year, presenting a wide spectrum of French-language cinema from major hits to cutting edge new directors and retrospectives.

Nobody knows Auguste Maquet, and yet everybody knows The Three Musketeers. Everybody knows Alexandre Dumas who wrote the swashbuckling masterpiece but who knows that Maquet is his co-writer? Nobody does, as his name does not appear on the cover. At least not Charlotte Desrives, the lovely daughter of a doctor stagnating in prison for his political opinions. When the lively girl mistakes the shy Maquet for the fiery ex-revolutionary Dumas, begging him to help her to have her father released, the former makes few efforts to put her right. With a refreshing comic touch and a quintet of fine performances, Dumas tells a fictionalised story about the relationship between the great French novelist and his ghostwriter.
Jean, his loving wife and son live a simple, happy life. At his son's homeroom teacher Madamoiselle Chambon's request, he volunteers as substitute teacher and starts to fall for her delicate and elegant charm. His ordinary life between family and work starts to falter. After the international success of Not Here To Be Loved, Stéphane Brizé returns with this touching, softy-spoken portrait of two adults fighting to contain their carnal passions from spilling over into a full-blown affair, filmed with great subtlety and tenderness, revealing another side of passion with distinct shades of Brief Encounter. It is the fourth film collaboration of Sandrine Kiberlain and Vincent Lindon and their obvious complicity and screen-synergy is evident - a simple glance between them is fraught with meaning.
Based on the famous comic books of Jean-Jacques Sempé and René Goscinny, Director Laurent Tirard delivers a hilarious and captivating comedy that is sure to thrill family audiences about the misadventures of a mischievous little boy in 1950s France, whose peaceful life is suddenly overturned. Nicolas has a happy existence, parents who love him, a great group of friends with whom he has great fun, and all he wants is that nothing changes. However, one day, he overhears a conversation that leads him to believe that his life might change forever, his mother is pregnant!

André Téchiné belongs to a second generation of French film critics associated with Cahiers du cinema, who followed from criticism into filmmaking. He is noted for his elegant and emotionally charged films that often delve into the complexities of the human condition and emotions.

Serge (Stephane Rideau), a French truck driver making deliveries for a clothing manufacturer in Morocco, visits his girlfriend Sarah (Lubna Azabal) and his friend Saïd (Mohamed Hamaïdi) when he makes stops in Tangier. Loin, from French director André Téchiné, examines the relationships between these three very independent twentysomething people, showing how their various desires in life conflict because of citizenship, employment, class differences, as well as personal outlook. Mon 29 Nov 6.30pm Director André Téchiné will be attending this screening and will participate in a post screening discussion alongside Bill Marshall (University of Stirling) and Patricia Pisters (University of Amsterdam), who have both studied his work.

Get ready for the film event of the year: Warren Miller’s Wintervention. From everyday terrain parks and lift-accessed powder to the most exotic global settings, Wintervention celebrates the snow-obsessed: Skiers who sail from Argentina to Antarctica searching for some of the last untouched descents in the world, a man whose six season passes simply aren't enough, riders who venture deep into the Caucasus Mountains of Georgia to chase rumours they overheard in a language they don’t speak and others who tour far into the northern reaches of the Arctic Circle. Far more than just a ‘regular‘ film screening, Warren Miller's 61st annual nationwide ski and snowboard road show will visit macrobert, and every filmgoer will receive a free goodie bag and go in the draw on the night with prizes ranging from ski jackets to rucksacks.

Happy-Go-Lucky (15)
Vera Drake (12A)
Another Year (12A)
‘Film-makers should remain true to their principles and never compromise, there is a real revival in the British film industry but there is a danger that we will become colonial servants of Hollywood. We need to maintain our own integrity.’ Mike Leigh macrobert is proud to present to you the work of Mike Leigh, an award-winning screenwriter and playwright who was born in Salford, Lancashire, in 1943. This November we present you some of his most notable works including the Golden Lion winner Vera Drake (2004), Happy-Go-Lucky (2008), which was named the best film of 2008 by New York Press film critic Armond White, and his newest movie Another Year, which premiered to critical acclaim at the 63rd Annual Cannes Film Festival this year.

Nominated for three Oscars, Mike Leigh's Vera Drake puts the subject into terms of specific and personal morality. Abortionist Vera Drake finds her beliefs and practices clash with the morals of 1950s Britain. After one unfortunate nearly dies as a result, the police are alerted and arrest Vera. Soon family and friends learn of her secret and must choose whether or not to stick by her, a conflict that leads to tragedy for her family.
Mike Leigh's latest film is an acutely well-observed study of needy and unhappy people desperately trying to make sense of their lives. Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter. Family and friendship. Love and warmth. Joy and sadness. Hope and despair. Companionship. Loneliness. A birth. A death. Time passes. Another Year is a deeply absorbing look at people who have arrived at a point in their lives where happiness has been achieved by some, but not by others.
Mike Leigh‘s first film since the Oscar nominated Vera Drake re-teams the veteran figure of Britain‘s social realist movement with star Sally Hawkins. Poppy Cross is happy-go-lucky. At 30 she lives in Camden: cheeky, playful, frank while funny, and talkative to strangers. Whether out on her bike, preparing lessons for the kids in her primary school class, or drinking with friends in the local, she keeps a smile on her face and a joke on her lips. Despite the misgivings of her younger sister, who has settled down in the suburbs to start a family, Poppy is happy with her life and determined to get the most out of every day. When her bicycle is stolen, however, Poppy decides to invest in driving lessons, a decision that will bring her face-to-face with a character and a worldview quite unlike her own.

Two mismatched wolves embark on a cross-country quest to get back home and restore peace in their pack after being relocated thousands of miles away by well-meaning park rangers. Quick-witted Humphrey likes to frolic with friends and play video games with squirrels; disciplined Kate likes to call the shots and hunt caribou. Normally, an omega wolf like Humphrey would never stand a chance with an alpha wolf like Kate. But when they are both transported halfway across the country they must work together to get back to their natural habitat, even if they don't have anything in common.
For years, stories have circulated about a secret place in the middle of the Nevada desert, known for unexplained phenomena and strange sightings. It's called Witch Mountain, and when a Las Vegas cab driver (Dwayne Johnson) finds two teens with supernatural powers in his cab, he suddenly finds himself in the middle of an adventure he can't explain. They work together to discover that the only chance to save the world lies in unravelling the secrets of Witch Mountain, and the race begins.
Gru is planning the biggest heist in the history of the world. He is going to steal the moon! Armed with his arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays, and battle-ready vehicles for land and air, he vanquishes all who stand in his way. Until the day he encounters the immense will of three little orphaned girls who look at him and see something that no one else has ever seen: a potential dad. The world’s greatest villain has just met his greatest challenge: three little girls named Margo, Edith and Agnes.

The adventures of young Ramona Quimby come to life in this all new film based on the best-selling books (over 30 million…and counting) by Beverly Cleary. Ramona’s vivid imagination, boundless energy, and accident-prone antics are put to the test when she helps her family face its biggest challenge. Along the way, Ramona must deal with her over-achieving older sister Beezus and the on-again, off-again romance between her Aunt Bea and Bea’s former beau.
Welcome Woody, Buzz and the whole gang back to the filmhouse for Christmas. Andy prepares to depart for college and his loyal toys find themselves in… daycare! These untamed tots with their sticky little fingers do not play nice, so it’s all for one and one for all as plans for the great escape get underway. A few new faces join the adventure this time, including iconic swinging bachelor and Barbie’s counterpart Ken, a thespian hedgehog named Mr. Pricklepants and a pink, strawberry-scented teddy bear called Lots-o’-Huggin’ Bear.
Bored with the same old Christmas stories? Prefer your A Christmas Carol to have a bit more Muppet? Then join Kermit, Gonzo, Miss Piggy, Waldorf and Stadler and all your other favourite Muppets in this almost as timeless a classic as the original it stems from. Jim Henson's Muppets have made many wonderful films, but this is surely the most famous, featuring a glowering Michael Caine as Ebeneezer Scrooge. Gonzo shines as Charles Dickens himself, Miss Piggy inevitably steals the show somewhat as Emily Cratchit, and not to forget Kermit, who gets a spotlight song as Bob Cratchit. Just a wonderful telling of Charles Dickens great Christmas story.

Opening the Edinburgh International Film Festival to critical acclaim this year, The Illusionist is an old-style, hand-drawn animation that brings to life scenes from Scotland in the 1950s with eerie directness. A semi-silent movie, with rudimentary, mumbled fragments of dialogue, it tells the story of an old-fashioned variety-turn conjuror, who travels all the way from France to Scotland and acquires a companion, a girl from rural Scotland, who shares tatty theatrical digs with him as a daughter-figure. It is in Edinburgh that the illusionist becomes disillusioned, but brings off an authentic act of human magic.
When Tamara Drewe sashays back to the bucolic village of her youth, life for the locals is thrown upside down. Tamara, once an ugly duckling, has been transformed into a devastating beauty. As infatuations, jealousies, love affairs and career ambitions collide among the inhabitants of the neighbouring farmsteads, Tamara sets a contemporary comedy of manners into play using the oldest magic in the book - sex appeal. Starring Gemma Atherton and Dominic Cooper.
Samson and Deliah is a love story, but not in the traditional sense, that deals with life on a remote community and the ways in which one young couple manage to escape from this mundane existence. Samson and Delilah's world is small, an isolated Aboriginal community in the Central Australian desert. When tragedy strikes they turn their backs on home and embark on a journey of survival. Lost, unwanted and alone they discover that life isn't always fair, but love never judges.

Winner of Best British Film at the 2010 Edinburgh International Film Festival, Skeletons is a darkly fanciful British comedy with shades of Terry Gilliam and Charlie Kaufman. Two exorcists literally remove the skeletons from the cupboards from people's homes. Some fairly embarrassing secrets are revealed along the way. A case where the skeletons have hidden themselves, turns the lives of all those involved.
As the global economy teeters on the brink of disaster, a young Wall Street trader partners with disgraced former Wall Street corporate raider Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas) on a two-tiered mission: to alert the financial community to the coming doom, and to find out who was responsible for the death of the young trader's mentor.

In 1985 Doc Brown invents time travel. In 1955 Marty McFly accidentally prevents his parents from meeting, putting his own existence at stake. 25 years ago Back to the Future arrived with little fanfare as an actionheavy special-effects franchise film, but proved that charm, wit and genuine excitement were not incompatible with that definition. In this re-mastered anniversary re-issue, Michael J Fox is the amiable young Marty McFly, jumping into his gull-winged DeLorean, which doubles as a time machine, and wild-eyed Christopher Lloyd is a joy as the nutty, irascible scientist Doc Brown. Africa United is the extraordinary story of three Rwandan kids who walk 3000 miles to the Football World Cup in South Africa. Using a sack load of ingenuity and sass, they set off through the endless horizons of Africa in pursuit of an unlikely dream. And as they walk they gather a tribe of broken and brilliant characters, who help them negotiate a way through a series of glorious, dangerous, hilarious and often bizarre situations.
When his idyllic life is threatened by a high-tech assassin, former black-ops agent Frank Moses reassembles his old team in a last ditch effort to survive. Based on the cult D.C. Comics graphic novel by Warren Ellis and Cully Hammer, Red is an explosive action-comedy starring Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren.

White Christmas is a treasury of Irving Berlin classics, among them 'Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep', 'Sisters', 'Blue Skies', and the beloved holiday song, 'White Christmas'. Two talented song-and-dance men (Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye) team up after the war to become one of the hottest acts in show business. One winter, they join forces with a sister act (Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen) and trek to Vermont for a white Christmas. Of course, there's the requisite fun with the ladies, but the real adventure starts when Crosby and Kaye discover that the inn is run by their old army general who's now in financial trouble. The result is the stuff dreams are made of.
Starring James Stewart as George Bailey and Henry Travers as Clarence Odbody, It's a Wonderful Life was nominated for five Oscars without winning any, but the film has since been recognized by the American Film Institute as one of the 100 best American films ever made, and placed number one on their list of the most inspirational American films of all time. It tells the story of George, a compassionate but despairingly frustrated businessman, whose imminent suicide on Christmas Eve brings about the intervention of his guardian angel, Clarence Odbody. Clarence shows George all the lives he has touched and the contributions he has made to his community.
Holly Berenson (Katherine Heigl) is an up-and-coming caterer and Eric Messer (Josh Duhamel) is a promising network sports director. After a disastrous first date, the only thing they have in common is their dislike for each other and their love for their goddaughter, Sophie. When their mutual best friends die in an accident, they are suddenly all Sophie has in the world. Forced to put their differences aside and juggling career ambitions, they’ll have to find some common ground while living under one roof. Wed 22 Dec 10.30am

In just a few years, the Afghan cricket team has risen from obscurity in the sport's lowest ranks to phenomenal success in the highly competitive international arena. This delightful and engaging documentary follows the Afghan cricket team in their quest against the odds to qualify for the World Cup. Executive produced by Oscar-winning director and cricket enthusiast, Sam Mendes, Out of the Ashes follows the squad over two years as they go from playing in their shalwar-kameezes on rubble pitches to batting their way around the globe and up the international league tables. In a country more often associated with war and rigged elections, their incredible journey is an absolute joy to behold.

Budrus is an award-winning feature documentary film about a Palestinian community organizer, Ayed Morrar, who unites local Fatah and Hamas members along with Israeli supporters in an unarmed movement to save his village of Budrus from destruction by Israel’s Separation Barrier.
