Breaking Away (12A)

Toby Philpott is an English puppeteer best known for his work in motion picture animatronics during the 1980s in such films as Labyrinth and Return of the Jedi. He began his film career after Jim Henson personally selected Philpott to work on the 1982 fantasy film The Dark Crystal, in which he worked side-by-side with Henson. Meet him in person for Q & A session after the screening of Labyrinth on Thur 29 Sep 7.30pm.

iRIDE is a series of film events inspired by two wheels at macrobert. Markus, macrobert’s very own Marketing Manager and a very keen rider (which sounds cooler than cyclist, although he owns and wears lycra), tells you why you should see the films yourself. Having just cycled the whole length of Britain unsupported, on one gear and without any painkillers and doping in six days, he is regularly blogging and a keen photographer of Scotland’s natural beauty.

A classic film from the eighties, in which young Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) is left home alone by her parents and has to babysit her little brother Toby. But the baby keeps crying and Sarah, while telling him a story to make him sleep, inadvertently conjures from a fantasy world the Goblin King (David Bowie) who steals the child and brings him to his castle in the middle of a labyrinth. Sarah has to rescue him before midnight, or the baby will become a goblin. Thur 29 Sep 7.30pm plus Q & A session with Toby Philpott

Now this is not only a movie for lycra-cladden cycle buffs, but for anyone who wants to enjoy an Academy Awardwinning classic. Ranked eighth on the List of America's 100 Most Inspiring Movies in the sports category, it tells the story of Dave, who together with his best friends Mike, Cyril and Moocher have just graduated from high school. Although each of the four is a totally different personality from the other three, they have in common the fact of being unfocused and unmotivated in life. The one slight exception is Dave. Although he has no job and doesn't know what to do with his life, he is a champion bicycle racer. Breaking Away is the right stuff for a break from the saddle, and even keen noncyclists will have a great time! Wed 21 Sep 7.30pm Tickets £6 (no concessions) / Friends £5

If you are a keen mountain biker like me or even a freerider, you might know the ongoing argument about who owns the forest. This bikumentary digs deeper into the issue, following freeriders in Washington, always on the lookout for rangers threatening their trails. Pedal Driven will give a good insight into both sides and take you behind this confrontation, trying to offer a solution how opposing fractions can find common ground in the defence of the beauty of the hills and forests. Take some time off from digging new trails, as I am pretty sure that this is a brilliant documentary, not just another film of people flying down trails. Aktan Arym Kubat's political parable had the honour of being Kyrgyzstan's official submission to the 2010 Academy Awards. The writer and director also takes the title role of a rural electrician, Mr Light, who siphons off the power supply to help out his impoverished neighbours. When he strikes a dodgy deal with a developer running for local government, the popular light-fixer finds himself dragged into an ever darkening vortex of corruption.

Potiche is a hilarious 1970s-set-drawingroom comedy from French filmmaker François Ozon, starring a resplendent Catherine Deneuve. The film tells the story of a submissive wife (Deneuve) who gets to run her husband's umbrella factory, after the employees rebel against their tyrannical manager. When Emilie (Tautou) opens a heartfelt love letter from a secret admirer, her first instinct is to throw it in the trash. However, she realizes what such a sentiment would mean to her lonely, despondent mother Maddie, who has given up the will to live since being left by her husband, now getting married to a much younger woman. While she's over the moon to see her mother returning to life, Emile is fully aware of the problems that lie ahead. Not only must she supply Maddy with more love letters, she must also find someone willing to play the author. Thur 22 Sep 7.30pm Sat 15 Oct 2.00pm

This psychological drama was nominated for a Golden Globe and was Denmark’s contribution to the Academy Award category for best foreign language film in 2011. Anton is a doctor who commutes between his home in an idyllic town in Denmark, and his work at an African refugee camp. In these two very different worlds, he and his family are faced with conflicts that lead them to difficult choices between revenge and forgiveness. Their ten-year-old son Elias is being bullied at school, until he is defended by Christian, a new boy who has recently moved from London with his father. Bier is well-known for her in-depth character study, tailored and thoughtful plot and script shown in this film as well its stunning photography. Mon 26 & Tue 27 Sep 7.30pm

The latest offering from the director and writer of Gomorrah and Mid-August Lunch tells the story of married house-husband Gianni, a man reaching retirement age. Gianni is a mature man with an eye for the opposite sex, the only trouble being that he has become invisible to women. Somehow Gianni has completely failed to notice that his contemporaries are all taking a second bite of the cherry! Even old Maurizio who always wears a tracksuit has a younger lover. Gianni decides he must take action to get back on the road to romance! Wed 28 Sep 10.30am & 7.30pm Thur 29 Sep 5.15pm

A beautifully made and deeply resonant film on the dark side of passion, Villain is about a murderer and the ordinary young woman who loves him. Shimizu (the titular "villain") is a troubled young man with a difficult home life; when Yoshino, the girl he's in love with, blows off an appointment with him to go off with the richer and prettier Masuo, he follows them and kills her. As he's going on with his daily life, trying to avoid suspicion, he receives an e-mail from a desperately lonely woman, Mitsuyo, who found him through a dating site. The two arrange to meet and soon strike up a romantic relationship, although not a very healthy one. And then the police come looking for Shimizu. Eri Fukatsu’s role as Mitsuyo won her the Best Actress Award at the 34th Montreal World Film Festival.

Winner of many awards including best film at the Berlin International Film Festival and audience award at the San Francisco International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, the film tells the story of a French family with two daughters, 10-year-old Laure and 6-year-old Jeanne, who moves to a new neighborhood during the summer holidays. With her tomboy haircut and ways, Laure is immediately mistaken for a boy by the local kids and passes herself off as Mikael. Filmmaker Céline Sciamma brings a light and charming touch to this drama of childhood gender confusion in a tender and touching film about self discovery. Sat 29 & 30 Oct 2.00pm

Memento is chronicling two separate stories of Leonard (Pearce), an ex-insurance investigator who can no longer build new memories, as he attempts to find the murderer of his wife, which is the last thing he remembers. One story line moves forward in time while the other tells the story backwards revealing more each time. Intriguing from start to finish, Memento deserves its cult status.

Wed 5 Oct 7.30pm

Jeanne Pope, USA 2011, TBC Dust is an intimate portrayal of Canadian artist Stanley Louis, a prolific stone sculptor, whose history has taken him around the world, learning from masters of the craft. Louis now resides in his dusty, cramped and discombobulated studio in Montreal’s The Main, an area of boulevard Saint Laurent. Stanley’s ill health both mentally and physically beg the question if Stanley’s art will ever again see the light of day or will it, and Stanley himself, end up returning to the dust? Jean Pope’s fascination with Louis gleams through the grainy monochromatic imagery as she cares deeply about this man, not because of his eccentricities, which probably drew her to him in the first place, but because of his genius. A brilliance that sits covered in dust and filth, like so many of his beautiful sculptures, covered in his dismal studio.

Set on the Hebridean Islands during the Second World War and based on a true story, this classic tells the story of the locals, which are struggling with a nasty drought of whisky and no one is too happy about it. So when the SS Cabinet Minister, a goods ship bound for the Caribbean, runs aground off the coast of the island, and rumours spread about the presence of 50,000 cases of whisky in the ship’s hold, the locals scramble to rescue the precious cargo. Came and enjoy a great Scottish classic with the driest of humour that encapsulates Hebridean life with its gossip, romance, and ultimately its dependency on damn good whisky.

The supremely desirable Gilda (Rita Hayworth) is married to the sinister casino owner Ballin Mundson, who befriends small-time crooked gambler Johnny Farrell after he saved him from being shot. Not surprisingly things become complicated for the friendship that is based on mutual lack of scruples. Hayworth’s performance as the ‘femme fatale’ permanently affected her life, as she once reportedly said: "Every man I knew had fallen in love with Gilda and wakened with me."

Set in New York City in the mid-1950s, the film explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. Maria (Natalie Wood) and Tony (Richard Beymer), both from a different rivalling gang, fall in love in one of the greatest musicals of our time, as the film holds the distinction of being the musical film with the mos Academy Awards.

Holmes, while Colin Blakely is his friend and chronicler Dr. Watson. This selfdescribed "hitherto suppressed and thoroughly fascinating" tale concerns Holmes' search for a missing mining engineer, a case that may have a far-reaching effect on the national security of England. Oscar winners Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts reunite for a dramatic comedy. Until he was downsized, affable, amiable Larry Crowne (Hanks) was a superstar team leader at the big-box company where he's worked since his time in the Navy. Underwater on his mortgage and unclear on what to do with his suddenly free days, Larry heads to his local college to start over. In his public-speaking class, Larry develops an unexpected crush on his teacher Mercedes Tainot (Roberts), who has lost as much passion for teaching as she has for her husband. Thur 1 Sep 7.30pm

Based on a true story of how Hassidic Jews were recruited as mules in the late 1990s to smuggle ecstasy pills from Amsterdam into New York, Holy Rollers tells the story of Sam Gold (Jesse Eisenberg) as a Hasidic Jew in his late teens who lives with his family in Brooklyn. Sam's father, Mendel (Mark Ivanir), runs a fabric store and Sam helps out when he isn't busy with his rabbinical studies. But Mendel isn't an especially good businessman, a fact that's become very obvious to Sam, and his uncertain financial future has caused his fiancés parents to call off the couple's upcoming wedding. So when part-time work is offered from his best friend’s successful brother he jumps at the chance. Picking up a package in Amsterdam seems easy enough but it's not until he comes home to New York that it dawns on that he's actually transporting drugs. Sat 3 Sep 5.15pm Sun 4 Sep 8.00pm

After sell-out performances and rave reviews from the Edinburgh International Film Festival, this exciting and genuinely funny film is the first feature film from Scottish film company Ickleflix. Fast Romance is a film that follows the interweaving stories of seven very different people who decide that, in their pursuit of love, it is time to try something new. Little do they know that after one night of speed dating their lives will take dramatic new twists, an we'll be there to witness each and every one of them. This roller coaster ride will leave you in no doubt that just three minutes with a complete stranger can change your life forever.

What can you do when your boss is a psycho, a man-eater or a total tool? Quitting is not an option. These monsters must be stopped. So, on the strength of a few too many drinks and some dubious advice from a hustling ex-con, whose treet credit is priced on a sliding scale, the guys devise a convoluted but foolproof plan to rid the world of their respective employers, permanently. But even the best-laid plans are only as good as the brains behind them.

The feature length debut movie from Paul Campion, the visual effects artist of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, the film is set in the Channel Islands on the eve of D-Day. Two Kiwi commandos arrive on land with a mission to destroy German gun emplacements to distract Hitler’s forces away from Normandy. However, not long after cool and collective Captain Ben Grogan and family man, Sergeant Joe Tane, have set foot on mine-infested soil, the soldiers stumble across the bizarre aftermath of multiple gruesome murders in an underground bunker, where they discover the head of Hitler’s occult Gestapo squadron, Colonel Klaus Meyer. The Tree is a beautifully haunting film about family grief and renewal based on a novel by Judy Pascoe, about an Australian family dealing with the unexpected death of a loved one and learning to move on. When fate strikes blindly one day, taking the life of the father Peter, it leaves his grief-stricken wife Dawn alone with their four children. Among them, eight-year-old Simone denies this reality. She is persuaded that her father still lives in the giant fig tree growing near their house and speaks to her through its leaves. Fri 9 Sep 7.30pm Sat 10 Sep 5.00pm Sun 11 Sep 2.00pm

After spending the night of their college graduation together, Emma and Dexter begin a friendship that will last a lifetime. Over the next two decades key moments of their relationship are experienced as they slowly realise that what they have been searching for is each other.

This romantic comedy centres on George, a fatalistic high school senior who is a gifted artist and made it all the way to his senior year without ever having done a real day of work, and the friendship he forms with Sally, a beautiful and complicated girl in his class who recognizes in him a kindred spirit. A ‘coming of age’ drama, but not in the typical sense you might expect.

A single act of both passion and arrogance leads to a battle unlike any other, and to The Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The visual effects team that brought you Avatar and Lord of the Rings is breaking new ground with this film, creating a CGI ape that delivers a dramatic performance of unprecedented emotion and intelligence, and epic battles on which rest the upended destinies of man and primate. 1990. The rave scene has arrived from Ibiza and warehouse parties are exploding across the UK bringing phenomenal wealth to the organisers. In Manchester, best mates Matt and Dylan are in their early 20s and long to be more than just punters. As the government moves to outlaw the scene, it's now or never and they quickly rise through the ranks to join the promoting elite. They are taken on a wild journey from the exclusive VIP rooms of London’s clubs to the outrageous parties in Ibiza’s super-villas and the hedonism of Amsterdam. It's everything they dreamed of and more. But as their success continues to grow, they attract a more dark and sinister world.

Dylan (Justin Timberlake) and Jamie (Mila Kunis) think it's going to be easy to add the simple act of sex to their friendship, despite the many friendship-toromance-relationships that fail. However, as first thought, it doesn’t surprise them that getting physical really does always lead to complications. A well acted romantic tale with great chemistry and comedy.

Yusef, a first-generation Pakistani engineering student, moves off-campus with a group of Muslim punks in Buffalo, New York. His new unorthodox house mates soon introduce him to Taqwacore, a hardcore Muslim punk rock scene that only exists out west. As the seasons change, Taqwacore influences the house more and more. The living room becomes a mosque during the day, while it continues to host punk parties at night. Ultimately, Yusef is influenced by Taqwacore too, as he begins to challenge his own faith and ideologies.

In this action comedy two fledgling criminals kidnap pizza delivery guy Nick (Jesse Eisenberg), strap a bomb to his chest and inform him that he has mere hours to rob a bank. As the clock ticks, Nick enlists the help of his ex-best friend, Chet, and the two must deal with the police, hired assassins, flamethrowers, and their own tumultuous relationship.

A remake of the 1985 original by Tom Holland, this new version tells the story of teenager Charley Brewster, who notices a series of mysterious disappearances. His amateur sleuthing, aided by his pal ‘Evil’ Ed Thompson, leads him to the door of the charming, charismatic Jerry (Colin Farrell), a vampire that is fed up hiding out. Needless to say, Jerry is deadly and charming in that way that people have when they want to part you from your haemoglobin.

Annie is a maid of honour, whose life unravels as she leads her best friend, Lillian, and a group of colourful bridesmaids on a wild ride down the road to matrimony. Annie's life is a mess, but when she finds out her lifetime best friend is engaged, she simply must serve as Lillian's maid of honour. Though lovelorn and broke, Annie bluffs her way through the expensive and bizarre rituals, with only one chance to get it perfect.

The end of the world is immediate as a rogue and much bigger planet called Melancholia is heading for Earth on a collision course. Meanwhile a cosmically catastrophic wedding reception is taken place for Justine, a manic depressive whose wedding has been expensively arranged by her long-suffering sister Claire and her blowhard brother-in-law. Tension erupts between the sisters' estranged parents and the evening ends in chaos. When they learn of their shared imminent fate, wealthy and worldly Claire is horrified, but gloomy Justine greets the forthcoming disaster with torpid calm as the vast planet looms, blotting out the sky.

Academy Award winner Helen Mirren plays Rachel Singer, a former secret mossad agent. The espionage thriller begins in 1997, as shocking news reaches Rachel and Stefan, her former mossad partner, about a previous colleague, David. All three have been venerated for decades by their country because of the mission that they undertook back in 1966, when they tracked down Nazi war criminal Vogel in East Berlin. At great risk, and at considerable personal cost, the team's mission was accomplished - or was it? The suspense builds in and across two different time periods, with startling action and surprising revelations.

A skilfully crafted documentary which raises the all-but-forgotten question of nuclear war. Produced by the Academy Award-winning team of An Inconvenient Truth, this documentary is a fascinating and frightening exploration of the dangers of nuclear weapons.

From the Oscar-winning team behind Man on Wire comes the story of Nim, the chimpanzee who in the 1970s became the focus of a landmark experiment which aimed to show that an ape could learn to communicate with language if raised and nurtured like a human child. Following Nim's extraordinary journey through human society, and the enduring impact he makes on the people he meets along the way, the film is an unflinching and unsentimental biography of an animal we tried to make human.

Officially Apollo 17, launched on 17 December 1972, was the last manned mission to the moon. But a year later, in December 1973, two American astronauts were sent on a secret mission to the moon funded by the US Department of Defence. This film contains actual footage which the astronauts captured on that mission. Decades old, it contains incredible scenes of what actually went on during that secret expedition. Sat 8 Oct 8.00pm

Gillian Wearing brings her studies in identity and self-projection to cinema with this documentary record of a collaboration between her and Sam Rumbelow, a London-based Method acting teacher. Seven daring non-actors, each with personal issues of varying complexity, answer a newspaper advert and join a cathartic workshop with Rumbelow to explore themselves through theatre. What we witness is raw and sometimes uncomfortable as Rumbelow pushes them to reveal themselves.

Luc Cote/Patricio Henriquez, Australia/Canada/UK 2010, 100 min

Andrew Rossi, USA 2011, 88 min

Phil Grabsky, UK 2011, duration tbc

During the most tumultuous time for media in generations, filmmaker Andrew Rossi gains unprecedented access to the newsroom at The New York Times. For a year he follows journalists on the paper's media desk, a department created to cover the transformation of the media industry. Through this prism a complex view emerges of a media landscape fraught with both peril and opportunity, especially at the Times itself. This year the biggest story is their own.

This award-winning documentary follows the international hit The Boy who Plays on the Buddhas of Bamiyan, which was originally screened at macrobert ten years ago. The Boy Mir covers not just one year, but ten, as it tracks the irrepressible and lovable Mir from a naĂŻve 8-year-old to a fully grown adult. Over this decade it not only is a journey that follows Mir as he grows up in one of the toughest places on earth, but also a film that is unmatched in mirroring and revealing the vitally important story of modern Afghanistan, full of humour and poignancy.

A shocking documentary based on security camera footage from an encounter in Guantanamo Bay between a team of Canadian intelligence agents and Canadian citizen Omar Khadr, then a 16-year-old detainee. Based on seven hours of video footage recently declassified by the Canadian courts, this documentary delves into the unfolding high-stakes game of cat and mouse between captor and captive over a four-day period. Maintaining a surveillance-camera style, the film analyses the political, legal, and psychological aspects of the interrogation through interviews with Khadr’s lawyers, a psychiatrist, an investigative journalist, former Guantanamo detainees, and a former US official.
