Welcome to the macrobert’s Spring/Summer Season 2010 Welcome to one of our best Spring/Summer programmes ever. It really is extra special as we will see the culmination of the macrobert mPOWER project in a new festival for Scotland in August 2010 all planned, programmed and run by young people aged 12-17 years. Watch out for more news on this in the next few months. Before that we kick off the year in style with the wonderful Bonachela Dance Company. From being an outstanding dancer with Rambert Dance Company to being one of the world’s most intriguing and inventive young choreographers, Rafael Bonachela’s career has seen him successfully bridge the divide between high and popular culture. His career has included being Associate Choreographer of Rambert Dance Company to being sought after by artists such as Kylie Minogue and Tina Turner. This is followed in March by DV8 collaborators Liam Steel and Rob Tannion’s company Stan Won’t Dance- Babel. Later in the month we have the wonderful 4D Art return with the stunning NORMAN. The show is created by two of the geniuses behind Cirque du Soleil- Victor Pilon and Michelle Lemieux and celebrates the life and work of Stirling born animator Norman McLaren. From late January to March the National Galleries are bringing a fantastic exhibition of work created by young people from all over Scotland. This is followed by our annual celebration of young artists attending Stirling Council schools with our most popular annual exhibition - Creativity Matters. Comedy includes Craig Hill and Kevin Bridges both of which are sure to sell out. The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra are on stage in march featuring one of the most inspiring jazz guitarists John Scofield, east meets west in April SNJO return playing alongside the Taiko drummers Drama includes the latest show by Random Accomplice and London Classic Theatre’s production of Harold Pinter’s - The Caretaker. A very special event takes place in February -Febfest which this year is supported by the Gordon Fraser Trust. Febfest provides a platform for nearly all the macrobert youth and adult groups to perform this really is an event not to miss. For children we are again able to offer some of the best work available and welcome the return of Travelling Light Theatre company with a gorgeous show for tinies called How Cold My Toes. For older young people we have Poppy and Dignan a beautiful and contemporary tale from the award winning Catherine Wheels Theatre Company. For those who love dance both young and old don’t miss Telling Tales created by some of the world’s best choreographers for young people. Including Enrique Cabrera (Aracaladanza) and Hélène Blackburn (Cas Public). We also hope to bring Polyglot from Australia to perform a work called We Built This City It has been seen previously at the Melbourne International Arts Festival, Kennedy Center in Washington, and Sydney Opera House. Children build an entire city for themselves using nothing but thousands and thousands of cardboard boxes. There's live music and improvised performance to help them along the way. This should be confirmed or otherwise by January so check out our website for details.

Craig Hill
MZA & CHill Productions present
40 LOVE…? This show is soooo not about tennis! Let’s celebrate! In this, his tenth, annual tour, Craig has decided to come out and admit that, having reached the dreaded milestone of forty (seventy in gay years), he is single, back on the road and back on the market. And guess what – he’s having the time of his life… No doubt about it – 40 Love…? will make you love 40! With his cheeky, irreverent and, of course, wonderfully camp blend of incisive stand-up, razor-sharp improvisation and fabulous musical characterisations, Craig has spent the last decade entertaining audiences around the world. His comic timing and pitch perfect delivery are second to none.

Bonachela Dance Company
The Land of Yes and the Land of No In his first piece for Bonachela Dance Company since taking up the post of Artistic Director at Sydney Dance Company, Rafael Bonachela dissects the world of signs and symbols that shape our everyday movement. One Way, No Entry, Warning, Merge, Stop. No longer innocent instructions, Bonachela finds these common commands spark memories and emotions that resonate deeply in our lives. They reflect the decisions we make, the paths we take, the turning points, the risks and the adventures; and this where The Land of Yes and The Land of No begins. The Land of Yes and the Land of No is not only a close collaboration with the dancers, but also with composer Ezio Bosso, who has previously worked in film and theatre as well as dance and has relished the chance to work so closely with BDC. Bosso’s score of expressive minimalism is a chamber piece pregnant with feeling, driving rhythm, lilting strings and sonorous soul. www.bonacheladancecompany.com

FebFest 2010 presents: Illyria By William Shakespeare Two of Shakespeare’s best-loved and most enchanting comedies – Much Ado About Nothing and Twelfth Night - come together in an innovative new production from macrobert’s Young Company. “Illyria” is an exclusive hotel where staff and guests alike are about to discover that the course of true love really never does run smooth. Don Pedro and his soldiers have returned from war and their arrival is set to cause chaos. While Benedick and Beatrice indulge in a “merry war” which hides their true feelings for each other, a darker, more dangerous battle of the sexes is about to explode and shatter everyone’s lives. Meanwhile, Viola, a shipwrecked orphan, arrives in Illyria mourning the loss of her twin brother. Disguising herself as a boy, she brings love and life back to a community stifled by its own desires but confusion and misunderstandings are never far away. These two stories interweave in a stylish contemporary production filled with love, laughter – and a pair of yellow stockings!

Lemieux Pilon 4D ART presents
NORMAN
- (A tribute to Norman Mclaren)
By Michel Lemieux, Victor Pilon and Peter Trosztmer We are delighted that once again the spectacular show Norman by 4D Art will be returning to the macrobert stage. From the makers of Cirque du Soleil’s stadium extravaganza Delerium comes a spectacular stage show celebrating the Oscar-winning, Stirling-born film maker, Norman McLaren. The show introduces McLaren’s life and work; we meet his friends and colleagues, dance through his playful animated landscapes and enter his imaginary worlds all in the company of the extraordinary performer, Peter Trosztmer. New techniques of “virtual projection” allow a performer to literally enter the films of Norman McLaren, to dance with them and talk with them - taking you on a journey inside the films. A revolution in the world of the performing arts, the effect seems almost magical making NORMAN a live multimedia experience not to be missed.

Stan Won’t Dance
Babel babel. noun. a confused noise made by a number of voices. (Genesis 11: 1 - 9) Five years ago Stan Won't Dance exploded onto the dance scene and redefined the rules about what theatre and dance can be. Now the choreographic mavericks Liam Steel and Robert Tannion return with their provocative new work BABEL. Collaborating with acclaimed writer Patrick Neate, the company combines explosive choreography with words of mass destruction to create the ultimate act of dance terrorism. Written entirely in dynamic street verse, the piece places a lost voice back in the mouths of a strangled population. Violent but beautifully choreographed polemics collapse our safe ivory towers of political correctness, and the audience is compelled to sift through the wreckage to uncover the truth of their downfall in the shards of sound-bites, celebrity and brand recognition. Kevin Bridges Kevin’s recent Edinburgh Comedy Award nomination (Best Newcomer) and his stand out performance on Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow (BBC ONE, June/October 2009) have highlighted an exceptional 12 months for the young Glaswegian comic. With his hotly anticipated DVD on the way and a string of high profile television appearances including Live at the Apollo (BBC1), 2010 is destined to be his year. Kevin’s delightfully well observed debut show reveals his inner-most thoughts on a variety of topics from his home-land of Scotland to the world beyond. His unique brand of social commentary, astute observations and sharp one-liners arguably make him the hottest act to come out of Scotland in the last ten years. www.offthekerb.co.uk

London classic
THE CARETAKER by Harold Pinter
Davies, an elderly drifter, is given shelter by the kindly but vulnerable Aston. He quickly makes himself at home in the squalid, junk-filled attic, but an uneasy peace is fractured by the arrival of Mick, Aston’s quick-witted, streetwise younger brother. As the shadows lengthen and the three men reveal more about the past and themselves, a battle of wits begins that will have irrevocable consequences for them all. London Classic Theatre first produced The Caretaker in 2004. The tour was both a critical and commercial success and this revival will be the centrepiece of their tenth anniversary year.
