ACCEPTABLE FACE

An animated discussion about the ‘ideal’ respectable queer person. How would they look, act and let people know that they’re not ‘that kind of gay’? Based on a series of interviews with LGBTQ+ people, this experimental charcoal animation explores the pressure to be a ‘good example’ and the joy of refusing to conform. Holly is an animator and illustrator with a particular interest in 2D, hand-made and mixed-media techniques. CLEANING IN PROGRESS

Working in a car park, tensions arise between a naive young cleaner and his talking brush - but ultimately, one cannot do their job without the other. Grant is a Scottish filmmaker specialising in stop-motion character animation. His work has been show across Scotland and screened internationally at several animation festivals. ANDRE RIEU: 70 YEARS YOUNG Charlotte Hawkins welcomes cinema audiences from around the world to André’s castle in Maastricht for a birthday celebration. ROYAL OPERA HOUSE LIVE:

THE SLEEPING BEAUTY This production has been delighting audiences in Covent Garden since 1946. A classic of Russian ballet, it established The Royal Ballet both in its new home after World War II and as a world-class company. EVENT CINEMA EXHIBITION ON SCREEN:

LUCIEN FREUD - A SELF PORTRAIT For the first time in history the Royal Academy of Arts in London, in collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, is bringing together Lucian Freud’s self-portraits. Enjoy this exhibition on the big screen with more than 50 paintings, prints and drawings in which this modern master of British art turned his unflinching eye firmly on himself. Tue 21 Jan, 8pm

ANNE FRANK: PARALLEL LIVES Oscar-winning Helen Mirren tells the story of Anne Frank’s life through the pages of her world famous diary, a story that has made the tragedy of the Holocaust known to readers all over the world. Her story is entwined with those of 5 holocaust survivors who shared Anne’s fate deportation, suffering and denial of childhood andadolescence - but were able to go on and live the life that Anne was denied. ROYAL OPERA HOUSE LIVE: LA BOHEME Puccini’s opera of young love in 19th-century Paris is packed with beautiful music, including lyrical arias, celebratory choruses for Act II’s evocation of Christmas Eve in the Latin Quarter and a poignant final scene over which the composer himself wept. Richard Jones’s character-led production perfectly captures La bohème’s mixture of comedy, romance and tragedy, with striking designs by Stewart Laing. NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE: CYRANO DE BERGERAC James McAvoy (X-Men, Atonement) returns to the stage in an inventive new adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac, broadcast live to cinemas from the West End in London. Fierce with a pen and notorious in combat, Cyrano almost has it all - if only he could win the heart of his true love Roxane. There’s just one big problem: he has a nose as huge as his heart. EVENT CINEMA ZSHORTS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2020 The ZSHORTS International Film Festival encourages and honours the talent and creativity of short-film-makers from all over the world. Over three screenings audiences will experience 30 to 40 “Official Selections” , showcasing creative story-telling and filmmaking at its absolute best. MARSTON & SCARLETT Choreographer Cathy Marston was previously an Associate Artist of the Royal Opera House and Director of Bern Ballett, and much in demand internationally. ROYAL OPERA HOUSE LIVE: FIDELIO Beethoven’s only opera is a masterpiece and an uplifting story of risk and triumph. In this new production, conducted by Antonio Pappano, Jonas Kaufmann plays the political prisoner Florestan, and Lise Davidsen his wife Leonore (disguised as ‘Fidelio’) who daringly sets out to rescue him. ROYAL OPERA HOUSE LIVE: SWAN LAKE Liam Scarlett’s glorious production of Swan Lake (new in 2018) returns for its first revival. EVENT CINEMA NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE: THE WELKIN One life in the hands of 12 women. Rural Suffolk in England, 1759.
