CELEBRATING 50 YEARS In 2017 the University of Stirling celebrates 50 years from its founding in 1967. Today it is ranked among the top 50 new universities in the world; a reputation that has been gained through the quality of its research and teaching, the impact it has had on society, and the skills and competencies of its graduates. Since its inception, art, heritage and culture have been valued at the University - in the belief that a creative environment stimulates creative thinking and can inspire a whole community. Today this is actively demonstrated through the ongoing commitment to Macrobert Arts Centre. To celebrate this landmark year we have live programme highlights, 1967 film classics and 50p (4/2d!) tickets on offer to University of Stirling Students (more details to be announced in Jan 2017). We are also launching a project with the University which connects new research ideas and discoveries to performance makers so that we can then share with you as great new productions. The live programme celebrations include Edward Albee’s brilliant Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, which is celebrating 50 years since the Oscar winning movie was released, and alumna Christine Bovill presents her extraordinary performance of Piaf. 1967 was also a great year for film, with releases like The Graduate, Cool Hand Luke and The Jungle Book now looked upon as all-time classics. Look out for top films like these throughout 2017.

THE SEASON Mental well-being is important to us all especially in the darker months. This season we invite you to join us in connecting to the ideas and experiences of mental illness - explored in the live show Fisk, the film event The Closer You Get, in an exhibition Conversations for Change, and through a series of Conversation Events and Creative Learning opportunities for Schools (P3 to 6). Laughter can lift the spirits so we have Susan Calman and Mark Thomas joining winter regular Craig Hill, bringing more comedy joy into 2017. Susan regularly finds fun in her ‘crab of hate’ and describes herself as ‘the most joyous sad person you will ever meet’. Mark Thomas’ show celebrates another 50th anniversary, that of Wakefield Labour Club's iconic Red Shed, where Mark first performed and politically came of age, as a student involved in the miners’ strike. There are many great ways to join us as we ‘make active connections with people, communities and ideas for entertainment, wellbeing and understanding.’ We look forward to seeing you soon.

TOO MUCH INFORMATION

Horse McDonald’s spellbinding debut play, written by Lynn Ferguson and directed by Maggie Kinloch. There are times in life when you need to be careful: growing up gay in Lanark in the 70’s, when the reward is half a pack of fruit pastilles, when the lady on the train tells you about the doctor you should meet. These would be some of those times, but you’ll always be saved if you use your voice.

As part of the National Autistic Society’s campaign ‘Too Much Information’, a group of autistic adults, under the guidance of an experienced Documentary Photographer, have used photography to explore the theme. The resulting images offer a unique and thought provoking insight and are aimed to help us all understand better the challenges of living with Autism.

Horse McDonald will also perform a selection of her hits and join Maggie Kinloch (Director) for a live Q & A with the audience.

JEWELS

Tue 11 Apr, 7.15pm George Balanchine’s evocation of the sparkle of emeralds, rubies and diamonds is a brilliant ballet classic. The French Romantic music of Faure provides the impetus for the subtlety and lyricism of Emeralds, while the fire of Rubies comes from Stravinsky and the jazz-age energy of New York. Grandeur and elegance complete the ballet with the splendour of Imperial Russia and the peerless music of Tchaikovsky in Diamonds.

WORLD PREMIER Mark Murphy’s V-TOL

OUT OF THIS WORLD

Fri 21 & Sat 22 Apr, 7.30pm

Recommended for age 14+

This is a genre-defying action packed event from acclaimed writer and director Mark Murphy. Set within a world of projected film and animation, it combines his signature mix of ground breaking aerial choreography, original text and explosive special effects in a show that is both intense psychological thriller and heart-rending medical drama. It’s the story of a woman’s woozy descent into the depths of a medically induced coma. Once safely cocooned, her crashed imagination takes over the show - creating a vivid inward cinema in which she reviews her life. But after discovering a shocking truth and with the medical team moving in for the kill, she must escape her subterranean safe house in a very real fight for life.

Tickets: £16.50 / £14.50 Conc Post Show Q & A, Fri 21 Apr Page 25

JULIUS CAESAR

Theatre | Mainhouse Frozen Light in association with New Wolsey Theatre

HOME

Angus Jackson directs Shakespeare’s epic political tragedy, as the race to claim the empire spirals out of control. Caesar returns from war, all-conquering, but mutiny is rumbling through the corridors of power. The Rome season in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre opens with the politics of spin and betrayal turning to violence. Following his sell-out productions of Tom Morton-Smith’s Oppenheimer (2014) and James Fenton’s adaptation of Don Quixote (2016), Season Director Angus Jackson steers the thrilling action.
