CELEBRATING 50 YEARS In 2017 the University of Stirling celebrates 50 years from its founding in 1967. Today it is ranked among the top 50 new universities in the world; a reputation that has been gained through the quality of its research and teaching, the impact it has had on society, and the skills and competencies of its graduates. Since its inception, art, heritage and culture have been valued at the University - in the belief that a creative environment stimulates creative thinking and can inspire a whole community. Today this is actively demonstrated through the ongoing commitment to Macrobert Arts Centre. To celebrate this landmark year we have live programme highlights, 1967 film classics and 50p (4/2d!) tickets on offer to University of Stirling Students (more details to be announced in Jan 2017). We are also launching a project with the University which connects new research ideas and discoveries to performance makers so that we can then share with you as great new productions. The live programme celebrations include Edward Albee’s brilliant Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, which is celebrating 50 years since the Oscar winning movie was released, and alumna Christine Bovill presents her extraordinary performance of Piaf. 1967 was also a great year for film, with releases like The Graduate, Cool Hand Luke and The Jungle Book now looked upon as all-time classics. Look out for top films like these throughout 2017.
THE SEASON Mental well-being is important to us all especially in the darker months. This season we invite you to join us in connecting to the ideas and experiences of mental illness - explored in the live show Fisk, the film event The Closer You Get, in an exhibition Conversations for Change, and through a series of Conversation Events and Creative Learning opportunities for Schools (P3 to 6). Laughter can lift the spirits so we have Susan Calman and Mark Thomas joining winter regular Craig Hill, bringing more comedy joy into 2017. Susan regularly finds fun in her ‘crab of hate’ and describes herself as ‘the most joyous sad person you will ever meet’. Mark Thomas’ show celebrates another 50th anniversary, that of Wakefield Labour Club's iconic Red Shed, where Mark first performed and politically came of age, as a student involved in the miners’ strike. There are many great ways to join us as we ‘make active connections with people, communities and ideas for entertainment, wellbeing and understanding.’ We look forward to seeing you soon.

This visually stunning performance piece takes us inside the life experience of a young man, as his vivacious partner tries to help him find a way out of the dark mental state he’s trapped in. Both funny and moving, the show can help us all better understand some aspects of depression and is the starting point for a series of illuminating activities and discussions to help explore something of urgent importance to our communities. It weaves together a rich tapestry of puppetry, movement and intricate design, alongside an evocative original soundtrack, the piece draws audiences into an immersive marine world. Examining themes of depression, support and interconnection, the show is an exploration of the lengths we can go to in order to escape from ourselves, yet also finds joy in even the deepest and darkest of depths.

Continuing the Conversation..... Special Film Screening & Workshop Programme Karen Guthrie, director of the award-winning documentary The Closer We Get, is working with students from the University of Stirling Social Work programme to explore the themes and ideas in her film. It’s a powerful and exquisitely-shot autobiographical portrait of loyalty, broken dreams and redemption that explores what happens when she takes on the care of her mother after a devastating stroke and her prodigal father returns.

There are times in life when you need to be careful: growing up gay in Lanark in the 70’s, when the reward is half a pack of fruit pastilles, when the lady on the train tells you about the doctor you should meet. These would be some of those times, but you’ll always be saved if you use your voice.
As part of the National Autistic Society’s campaign ‘Too Much Information’, a group of autistic adults, under the guidance of an experienced Documentary Photographer, have used photography to explore the theme. The resulting images offer a unique and thought provoking insight and are aimed to help us all understand better the challenges of living with Autism.
Horse McDonald will also perform a selection of her hits and join Maggie Kinloch (Director) for a live Q & A with the audience.

WE’RE FAMILY FRIENDLY
We welcome children and families and are fully accessible for prams and pushchairs. There is a pram parking bay just as you enter the building beside the Box Office and booster cushions are available on request for the Filmhouse. We have baby changing facilities in both the men’s and women’s toilets in the main foyer and a baby care room in the Arthouse which includes a wheelchair accessible toilet, changing area and private area for feeding. Mothers are welcome to breastfeed anywhere at Macrobert Arts Centre.
