message from julie We owe a great deal to the communities that we serve and one of the ways we repay the support we receive is to help stimulate the local economy and bring greater understanding of the place we live - spreading the word about the region around the country and internationally. This spring we’re breaking new ground by having one of the best UK performance companies creating, rehearsing and opening their heart-melting love story, Out Of This World (P1-3), deep in your community. It’s this season's Conversation Starter so please don’t miss it, as it may be too good to describe! As we move towards summer we have some fantastic family shows coming to visit. There are adventures underwater from Funbox, in the woods for Little Red, in the dark with Night Light, back in time with Tartan Tales, there's exploration inside the family in MamaBabaMe and at the start of the holidays we go on an action packed walk from Donaldson's Dairy with Hairy Maclary. There’s also a delightful blend of activities for children of all ages to join in with their loved ones. Look out for three classical protagonists, including one Shakespearean King re-imagined and two from the cannon of great American plays - Queen Lear (Shakespeare's original text is given a twist by switching the gender), the darkly satirical Martha from Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and the romantic fantasist Blanche Dubois in A Streetcar Named Desire. The Pearl Fishers' Leila also brings fire and passion to the excellent dramatic offerings this season, complete with a live orchestra. When you've organised the family and booked your theatrical highlights then we’ve got lots of light entertainment on offer - top comedians, The Lady Boys of Bangkok and an evening with Nicholas Owen - all in the University of Stirling’s 50th Anniversary year. Please join us, there’s a lot to celebrate!

from this season's Conversation Starter Mark Murphy’s professional career has seen this creative polymath emerge in dance, grow through theatre directing, specialise in film and then draw all his skills together in live spectacle work, where digital projection is a powerful, integral element of epic international ceremonies. When Mark started to talk of his desire to realise a more intimate work, a story driven piece, he instantly had my attention. To make Out Of This World it was clear that Mark and the Dance Touring Partnership would need more than just a rehearsal room for their cast. The scale of practical production support to realise this show is as big as Mark’s ambition, so we were both excited and determined to be able to make the whole process happen here and with support from Beaconhurst School and Arts & Business Scotland it has been possible. Successful musician Ellen and her husband Antony, have been married for only 5 weeks, 3 days and 3 hours when their love faces the greatest challenge of all. A terrible incident in the life of a newly wedded couple speaks to our common human experience and fears. What lifts Out of This World far above the usual, is when the higher feelings in this beautiful story are expressed through a unique, spectacular theatricality. The world of the play is told to us from inside Ellen’s mind. Her damaged brain has choices to make that will determine her future. How our brain works under duress and the consequences of the information it gives us are important to our survival.

Ellen is a professional musician. She and Antony are madly in love and have been married for 5 weeks, 3 days and 3 hours when the unthinkable happens. Ellen is left with a heart-breaking decision to make – her life or her love. Breath-taking aerial movement, live original music and interactive projection combine to tell a touching love story, set in Ellen’s subconscious. The must-see event of 2017 and one that truly defies description!

Continuing the Conversation Before the performances of Out of this World, we’re showcasing research by neuroscientists from the University of Stirling, measuring the brain waves of performers from the show. This is part of a body of new arts and research activity between the University of Stirling and Macrobert Arts Centre. PhD researcher Simon Ladouce will record the electrical brain activity of the performers as they move in a choreographed routine – bringing art and science together in brand new way. Simon from the Centre for Mobile Cognition said: ‘This unique link-up with Macrobert Arts Centre and the makers of Out of This World represents a great opportunity to put a technique to study brain activity developed here at Stirling to the test in a real-life environment.’ DANCING WITH MYSELF Cognitive Neuroscientists from the Psycology Department at University of Stirling have been drawing on their specialist understanding of what happens inside the brain when we dance alone and when we dance with another. Come along and see a demonstration of this cuttingedge technology capturing real-world behaviour. Video with Live presentation Fri 21 Apr, from 6.30pm Video presentation only Sat 22 Apr, from 6.30pm Page 3

Thu 28 to Sat 30 Sep, 7.30pm This award-winning show takes a nostalgic look at the hard hitting realities of life at the coal face. Strong, powerful and emotive it explores the darker underbelly of the mining industry, unearthing the true nature and body wrecking demands of a working class industry now almost forgotten.
Tickets: £10.50 / £8.50 Conc / £5.50 Students BE PART OF THE COMMUNITY CAST We’re looking for four women aged 30+ with no professional performance experience to join Gary and the company for our performances of this show. The roles involve some physical work, but individual needs and abilities will be taken into account. Interested? Contact: engagementcoal@gmail.com
