message from julie Our ‘cover girl’ larger than life welcome from Chick Whittington’s Dame, Alice Fitzwarren-Whittington sets the tone for a cracking, fun filled journey, from October right through to Hogmanay. Before Christmas calls you back to Stirling Stella there is great entertainment for you, whatever your age, and lots of events to get the whole family together for a really good time. Children’s choices invite you; to join Snigel the snail and friends in the magical world under the leafy canopy; to play fetch with The Little Gentleman’s dog; to journey back to the Western Isles in 1934 to help unite the world; celebrate growing up and grandparents in W-Hat About; and get down at a gig with Sprog Rock. We have more top quality musical theatre than ever before starting with All or Nothing, evoking Stirling University’s 50th Anniversary founding year, in the story of the Small Faces - live hits to sing along to include Itchy Coo Park, Lazy Sunday Afternoon and Sha-La-La-La-Lee. Later in the season we have a new Scottish musical The Sunshine Ghost, inspired by a Highland haunting, and our musical grand finale is the side splitting Scottish classic -The Steamie. I can’t think of a better Conversation Starter for our season than Gary Clarke’s Coal. It is a brilliant revisiting of the life of ordinary people in a time of great change and will inspire us all to reflect on our history and how it influences our communities still. There’s high quality drama, dance and music going right through the season, as well as insights into the brilliant work of wildlife filmmaker Gordon Buchanan and physical anthropologist Alice Roberts. And how else would we finish our year than with the best of Christmas entertainment? Eric the Elf’s Chaotic Christmas will need everyone 5 and under to help save Christmas. Whereas Chick Whittington takes us in a time machine back 50 years from Christmas eve in Stirling Stellar to ‘The Summer of Love’ in 1967. With songs from now and then we’re in for a time travelling treat. Whatever you choose, we’re looking forward to welcoming you to Macrobert Arts Centre. See you soon!

from this season's Conversation Starter Scottish Coal Industry Special Welfare Fund
History is a vital part of our everyday lives, it is reflected in the world we live in. Coal mining was the starting point for many local towns and villages but few children today have seen or handled a piece of coal. Thirty years on from the miners' strikes we’re revisiting, celebrating and sharing our knowledge and feelings about our coal mining history. Through performance, participatory events and conversations we’re looking to the future with a better understanding of our places and ourselves. Coal, Undermined, Landscape Legacies and Macrobert In: Fallin and Sauchie bring more local people together than our previous Conversation events, reaching into Stirling and Clackmannanshire as well as gathering at Macrobert Arts Centre. It is an incredible privilege for us to work with artists, researchers and community members alike led by Gary Clarke and company, Philip Gurrey, Catherine Mills and Alasdair Ross and be part of Historic Environment Scotland's History Live weekend (29 Sept to 1 Oct). Join us to share and help grow the understanding of our relationship to Coal and have a great time at the performances and exhibitions. Dig in!
Macrobert In: Fallin & Sauchie
In July we spent a great weekend taking a taste of the entertainment and activities we offer at Macrobert Arts Centre right into the communities of Fallin and Sauchie. Each day opened with a pop-up cinema screening of Beauty and the Beast and in the afternoon artist Philip Gurrey ran a drop-in workshop inviting people of all ages to create a slogan, paint their placard and get involved in a mock demonstration. Our very own Drama Artist Lucy Wild ran a couple of drama games workshops in the afternoon, encouraging participants to get creative, have fun and then have their voice heard as part of a ‘demo’. Philip also made audio recordings of the ‘demos’ which are part of the Under-Mined Exhibition (see p1). Page 2

Continuing the Conversation
LANDSCAPE LEGACIES: CATHERINE MILLS & ALASDAIR ROSS
Catherine and Alasdair (University of Stirling) are exploring the landscape histories of abandoned colliery sites in Clackmannan and Stirlingshire. They’re capturing the legacy of the decline of the coal mining industry and the impact on the people in the area through conversations with anyone interested in sharing their stories and experiences. How the sites have been used, re-purposed and redeveloped and how the industry has been remembered or commemorated from closure to present day. COAL: CALL OUT FOR WOMEN
We’re looking for four women aged 30+ (no upper limit) with no professional experience in dance or theatre to join Gary, his seven dancers and a live brass quintet on stage at Macrobert Arts Centre. They’ll feature in a small section of the show and play members of the women’s union ‘Women against Pit Closures’ established in 1984. If you’re interested, please get in touch before Thu 7 Sep. This exhibition celebrates the culture and history of television throughout the decades, with each painting marking an era, a style and a TV programme. Originally commissioned by Unlimited, it is a celebration of learning disability culture by multi-talented artist Cameron Morgan. Cameron Morgan is a multi-talented and prolific artist who has worked with Project Ability, as part of their Aspire programme, since 1991. Special thanks to artist Jason Davies for acting as Morgan’s mentor and assistant during this project.

There is a pram parking bay just as you enter the building beside the Box Office and booster cushions are available on request for the Filmhouse. We have baby changing facilities in both the men’s and women’s toilets in the main foyer. Mothers are welcome to breastfeed anywhere at Macrobert Arts Centre.
