Classics, Comedy and Life Celebrations for 2018 To kick start 2018 we have a rich offering of classics bringing you the most dramatic and compelling of human stories; the beautiful ballet Giselle; Ae Fond Kiss - the life of Burns; Event Cinema classics Tosca, Twelfth Night and The Winter’s Tale and an explosive new exploration of Milton’s Paradise Lost – our Conversation Starter The Shadow of Heaven. In early March we lead up to International Women’s Day with Morna Burdon’s Bonnie Fechters, Christine Bovill’s Paris and the Royal Opera House event cinema presentation of Carmen: stories by and of women to be celebrated. Do not miss Bingo! A musical comedy with a star studded cast straight from the pen of our pantomime writer and favourite Dame, Johnny McKnight. He collaborates with TV comedy writer Anita Vettesse and Musical Director Alan Penman for an absolutely great night out, guaranteed. There are plenty of evenings just for laughs from Craig Hill, Jay Lafferty, Alan Bissett and Gary Lamont. Craig is back with more kilt punning fun and later Jay joins us for the first time, with her comedic exploration of how she lives up to her granny’s favourite cry ‘ya wee besom’. Alan Bissett takes on the role of Moira, ‘Falkirk’s hardest woman’ in a side splitting monologue from his legendary creation and afterwards will be in conversation with creative writing students on how Alan went from teaching literature to performing live. In 2016 Alan received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Stirling in recognition of his contribution to Scotland’s literary culture. This season’s great comedy ends with Gary Lamont’s Dropping the Soap, packed with stories and songs to delight us all, as he washes River City character Robbie right out of his hair. Enjoy a great night full of laughter and music and help raise money for a very special holiday home for children and families touched by cancer. Eilidh Brown lost her battle with cancer at just 15 years of age, but her family are committed to building somewhere special for other families to make some lasting memories.
An exhibition of fantastic costumes that would be perfect for theatrical productions set between 1550 and 1620. The costumes, undergarments and accessories in the exhibition have been constructed by students studying Theatre Costume Interpretation (HND, Year 2) or Costume for Stage and Screen (HND, Year 1) at Edinburgh College.

Jonathan Kent’s production for The Royal Opera House captures the dangerous political turbulence of Rome in 1800. The Chief of Police, Scarpia – one of the most malevolent villains in opera – ruthlessly pursues and tortures enemies of the state. His dark, demonic music contrasts with the expansive melodies of the idealistic lovers, Tosca and Cavaradossi, who express their passion in sublime arias, including Vissi d’arte and E lucevan le stelle.

This exhibition is the result of a search for harmony, beauty or monumentality, usually in neglected or marginal places or perhaps in the remains of utilitarian structures. The photographs were taken in Scotland over the last four years and most are a response to weathered or decomposing surfaces as they are illuminated by light of a certain quality at a particular moment; they also attempt to capture the marks or signs we leave in the landscape, especially those that are accidental, ephemeral or transient.

CARMEN
This ever-popular opera is given a fresh point of view in Barrie Kosky’s highly physical production, originally created for Frankfurt Opera. The opera’s heady combination of passion, sensuality and violence initially proved too much for the stage, and it was a critical failure on its 1875 premiere. Bizet died shortly after, and never learned of the spectacular success his opera would achieve: it has been performed more than five hundred times at Covent Garden alone.

BERNSTEIN CENTENARY To celebrate the centenary of Bernstein’s birth, The Royal Ballet has united all three of its associate choreographers to celebrate the dynamic range and danceability of the composer’s music. The programme includes two world premieres by Resident Choreographer Wayne McGregor and Artistic Associate Christopher Wheeldon, marking each artist’s first foray into Bernstein. At the heart of the programme is the first revival of Artist in Residence Liam Scarlett’s The Age of Anxiety, created in 2014 to Bernstein’s soul-searching Second Symphony.

SEASHELLS BUILD BONE Tue 10 Apr to Sun 6 May
This exhibition began with the story of an ancient Mayan skull that contained false teeth carved from an oyster shell. The shell teeth had been accepted by the jawbone, which had grown new bone, generated by its response to the shell. Artist Rachel Duckhouse worked with biominerals expert Professor Maggie Cusack to explore the structural patterns within oyster shells using electron microscopy. The mysterious patterns that induce human stem cells to produce bone are the inspiration for this exhibition. Funded by The Leverhulme Trust.

Your support allowed us to give away nearly 1,000 tickets to this year’s panto through our Christmas Appeal. We partnered with local charities to make sure your support really does reach those who need a little bit of festive fun and cheer. Our Film Tour went on the road to Strathcarron Hospice, Forth Valley Children’s Ward, and Maggie’s Forth Valley; with support from local businesses. You made all this possible. There is a pram parking bay just as you enter the building beside the Box Office and booster cushions are available on request for the Filmhouse. We have baby changing facilities in both the men’s and women’s toilets in the main foyer. Mothers are welcome to breastfeed anywhere at Macrobert Arts Centre.
