Welcome to the Spring Season.... Conversations are right at the heart of our programme here at Macrobert Arts Centre and this season we are inviting you to contribute Yer Ain Voice, as we celebrate individual expression in many different forms, old and new. Oor Wullie (p12) is coming from Auchenshoogle to bring spectacular family fun to Macrobert. Scotland’s favourite son will be getting up to his usual tricks and sticking up for his gang in his own unique brand of Scots. Whatever his antics one thing’s for sure, this show is gonnae be braw! Another of Scotland’s most famous voices will be presenting a very special evening of poetry and prose. Liz Lochhead (p16) will perform a selection of her works and then talk with all of us about how she learned to love Scots language. The thoughts and feelings of Millennials come to the front in thick skin, elastic heart (p9). A kaleidoscope of diverse voices presenting contemporary spoken word monologues and group poems woven together in an athletic, physical delivery. There’s an alternative to the traditional 25 January celebration in A Very Peculiar Burns Supper. There’s nae Burns and nae supper, but there is an evening full of fun packed performances with spoken word and lots of live music. The atmosphere is informal and social and the tickets are free – so book soon! For those who enjoy our Relaxed Events folk duo Hannah Rarity and Luc McNally will perform Scottish songs in a sociable and accessible format on 28 Apr. The walls of our venue will be full of artworks to enjoy and some to contribute to, including a selection of poems from the Scottish Poetry Library and from the GOSSIP Collective artists there’s an engaging exploration of Scots dialect and identity. On 28 Feb and 26 Mar we will be holding our very first Conversation Stations – time to talk about the work you’ve seen and the themes of our Conversation with other members of our audience. Join any of the reserved foyer tables, where there will be chat cards to help the discussion flow and seat service from our Kiosk. Also keep an eye out in the New Year for some exciting additions to our Film Programme for this Conversation, looking at the Scottish voice on screen. Speaking our thoughts and feelings aloud isn’t for everyone - many of you communicate beautifully through music, written and signed languages, movement and many other visual forms of expression. However we share it, each of us has our unique and special voice and we are keen to have yours as part of our Conversation. I hope you enjoy all the events on offer and that you will contribute to our season in Yer Ain Voice.

WASTELAND
In 1994 hundreds of coal miners hung up their pit boots as Grimethorpe Colliery and its working-class community were destroyed. The sequel to Coal looks at how two generations coped in this era of radical upheaval. As we see one generation grind to a halt, we follow the next into the 90s illegal rave scene, where warehouses became home to a new-found community of music and dance. I joined the team at Macrobert Arts Centre in February and in that time we’ve welcomed Ben and Laura (Creative Learning Officers) and Meara (Dance Artist), who along with Daniel (Drama Artist) make up the Creative Learning team. Delivering workshops at Macrobert and out in communities, our team, and the other incredible artists we invite in, work with thousands of people every year. We’re pretty proud of that, but want to work with more of you and in the best way we can. As a team we have been squirreling away, looking at the future of our programme. We’ve been thinking about what more we could be offering you and any activity you think we should stop. We would like to:

They are open to everyone, but designed to welcome people who benefit from an informal environment – particularly those living with dementia. Fresh from 60 Days of improvisation training with David Zambrano in Brussels, Tess will lead you through exercises that explore solo, partner and group material for spontaneous performance. Use your own life experiences, interests and culture to express themselves through movement.
Led by members of Gary Clarke Company you’ll be learning selected choreography from Wasteland (P15). You’ll also be taken through a step-by-step process using imagery, intention and physical exploration into Gary’s choreography.

Chaz will be utilising the fundamentals of Breaking to explore rhythmic, creative and floorwork movements. Using his extensive experience he’s created a workshop that will improve your dance abilities and creative thinking, while challenging you to push beyond your comfort zone.
The workshop will provide a window into Malcolm's creative process, specifically around the themes of solitude and loneliness. You’ll explore individual and group improvisation tasks as well as learning some phrase material from this work in progress.

Dance for Parkinsons
We’re delighted to be getting involved in the Dance For Parkinson’s Scotland programme - a joint initiative managed by Dance Base, Scotland's National Centre for Dance and Scottish Ballet, Scotland's National Dance Company, and delivered in partnership with Parkinson's UK. This means we’re running weekly classes at Macrobert Arts Centre, designed especially for people living with Parkinson’s, their families and carers. They’re suitable for people with no dance experience and develop confidence and creativity, whilst addressing Parkinson’s specific concerns such as: balance, flexibility, coordination, gait and social isolation. The session is followed by tea/coffee, cake and a blether! Green Arts Initiative
If you haven’t visited us since the University of Stirling re-development started in the summer, then please take a few minutes to look at the Your Visit page on our website – it’s got all the latest info about the changes on Campus and lots of other details that you might find helpful.
We welcome all visitors with additional access requirements and are committed to making our work and spaces accessible to everyone. We have a Changing Places Toilet, five Blue Badge parking spaces and a drop-off point near our new front doors. We also include a range of accessible events as part of our programme. More info is available on the Access page of our website.
We welcome children and families and are accessible for prams and pushchairs. Booster cushions are available on request for the Filmhouse. Mothers are welcome to breastfeed anywhere and we have baby changing facilities in both the men’s and women’s toilets in the main foyer and the Arthouse. We have been a member of the Green Arts Initiative since 2014 and are committed to reducing our environmental impact in a number of ways: • Reduced the number of products we sell that contain palm oil by 80% • Switched to bags / boxes for popcorn and crisps • Swapped to cans / cartons instead of bottles for all the drinks we sell Macrobert Arts Centre is a registered Charity in Scotland No. SC039546

We charge a total booking fee of £1 on phone and online bookings and are happy to post your tickets out to you for an additional £1. Ticket prices for most shows include a 50p contribution to our development fund, helping protect the future of Macrobert Arts Centre and improve our facilities.
