Shorter days means longer nights but worry not, we have an outstanding selection of live performance, social gatherings and creative activities to help make the nights through to Hogmanay truly memorable. When some of Scotland’s finest children’s works came out on tour again, we leapt at the chance to bring Martha, Tiger Tale and White here for you to enjoy. Their award winning success has taken them around the world and there are performances for ages 2-4, 4+ and 7+, plus a new work, Playful Tiger especially for children and young people who are profoundly autistic. Re-tours of the best work also includes the exquisite 9/11 inspired Within this Dust and The Citizens intimate look at Shakespeare’s Scottish royals The Macbeths. Our new productions include The End of Eddie, McLuckies Line, Scotties, Nests and No Show, each revealing often unheard voices of those who know they are different, those who have been forgotten and those of the young. We always look to widen the stories and voices we share and this autumn we are building our social programme and extending our range of activities. You will have more opportunities to connect to the lives of others, to enjoy your own creativity, to share your talents and to lead what goes on at Macrobert Arts Centre: see Fun Palaces, Creative Breakfast events, Open Doors activities and our Get Involved listings. Be sure to add your voice to this season’s Conversation as through a range of events, including The Yellow on the Broom, we hear the voices of Scotland’s Gypsy and Traveller population then and now. Together we will celebrate all our identities through the memories and keepsakes that bring them close to mind (P8 – P10). Come join us for all this plus comedy, music, exhibitions, event cinema, entertainment, Pantomime and other festive offerings. I really look forward to sharing it with you.

THE END OF EDDY Thu 6 Sep, 7.30pm Recommended for age 16+

'My crime wasn't doing something. My crime was being something. Being different in a way everyone else could see.' Born into poverty in an isolated village in rural France, a boy grows up amongst hard men and women living hard and violent lives. Relentlessly bullied for being gay, this is the story of Eddy’s struggle to understand who he is, who he might become, and his fight to escape. This brand new adaption of Édouard Louis’ acclaimed autobiographical novel of hope, love, lust and anger is both unflinchingly honest and hugely entertaining.

Exploring the events surrounding 9/11, this production is inspired by Richard Drew’s iconic photographs that capture a man falling from the World Trade Centre. It balances sumptuous movement and subtle storytelling to explore themes of impact, loss, survival and humanity in relation to the stark horror of the day and is performed against almost 3000 pieces of white paper that symbolise the lives lost. Developed by award winning choreographer Thomas Small, this cinematic performance blends three live dance works with animation and survivor’s accounts.

from this season’s Conversation Starter When Dundee Rep announced they were touring The Yellow on the Broom we welcomed the opportunity it presented to connect with the history of Traveller people in our region and with contemporary traveller life: a chance to give space to some of the rarely heard voices of the past and of the present.

Julie Ellen, age 6

Our exploration of these potential connections led us to MECOPP (Minority Ethnic Carers of People Project) who curated the Moving Minds Exhibition, which opens our Conversation on 23 August, sharing the experiences of today’s Gypsy/Traveller women. Alongside the literature, photography and discussion events – including the spectacular storytelling and live music of The Yellow on the Broom - this exhibition brings us together to share and celebrate our identities and memories, and the keepsakes that bring them close to mind. We’d be delighted if you’d join us to enjoy these works and to add your voice to this season’s Conversation.

Photo Competition:

ESSENTIAL & TREASURED POSSESSIONS

In The Yellow on the Broom, Betsy Whyte describes how few photographs her family owned, and how precious they were. ‘We travellers carried only essential and treasured possessions with us. Everything else we burned when we moved on. So these [seven family photographs] must have been amongst my mother’s treasures.’ Get involved in our first Conversation Photo Competition by submitting a photo of something that matters to you and a short description explaining why. It can be a copy of a treasured photo or a picture of something or somewhere you value. We’ll select a number of our favourites to be exhibited in our venue. Submit a photo: marketing@macrobertartscentre.org Deadline: Mon 27 Aug

This treasured photo was taken on carnival day in the Warwickshire village, Harbury during our first visit to my Godparents Hannah and Dick Lowe. They retired here from the factory town of Farnworth and two years later we too left Lancashire for Harbury. I think my mum (centre) fell in love with Harbury on this day, and so did the 11 year old me. L to R: Hannah Lowe, Ellen Critchley (Mum), Julie Ellen (aged 11), Dick Lowe.

A collection of some of the kitchenware I inherited from my Nana. None of it’s fancy, and it's all a little battered, but she used it most days, as do I, and the connection is what makes it precious. Kathryn Welch, Operations Director, Macrobert Arts Centre

THE YELLOW ON THE BROOM

By Anne Downie Based on the novel by Betsy Whyte Directed by Andrew Panton Wed 26 to Sat 29 Sep, 7.30pm / Wed 26 & Sat 29 Sep, 2.30pm ‘I’ll tak’ye on the road again, when yellow’s on the broom.’ Adapted from Betsy Whyte’s beloved autobiography, The Yellow on the Broom is a heartfelt, funny, and rich account of human endeavour. Filled with music, song, and an array of vibrant characters, Bessie’s story both passionately tells of her life and vividly portrays the prejudice faced by Travellers. In 1930s Perthshire, Bessie Townsley is growing up in the Travelling community. Her mother and father teach her the ways of the land, but their lifestyle is under threat. With winter approaching, the family settle in Brechin for the season. There, Bessie must attend 100 days of compulsory schooling and although she shows promise in the classroom, the travelling life she adores is viciously attacked by those around her.

TROILUS AND CRESSIDA

Marius Petipa’s fantasy, set in legendary India, tells the tale of a temple dancer and the prince who loves her but marries another. The famous, moonlit ‘white act’ – The Kingdom of the Shades – is a corps de ballet highlight, as multiple images of the prince’s lost love haunt his mind. The choreography allows two opposing ballerinas to shine, while a bronze idol comes vividly to life in a stunning solo.

Troilus and Cressida swear they will always be true to one another. But in the seventh year of the siege of Troy their innocence is tested, and exposed to the savage corrupting influence of war, with tragic consequences. Virtuoso percussionist Evelyn Glennie collaborates with RSC Artistic Director Gregory Doran to create a satirical futuristic vision of a world resounding with the rhythm of battle, broadcast live in the Filmhouse from Shakespeare’s home town.
