UTØYA: JULY 22 On July 22nd 2011, more than 500 young people at a political summer camp on an island outside Oslo were attacked by an armed, right-wing extremist. Earlier that day he bombed a Government building in Oslo before making his way to Utøya island. In this first fictional movie about the attack we get to know Kaja (18) and her friends, as the safe atmosphere on the island is shattered and she tries to survive – minute by minute. FIRST MAN Based on the book by James R Hansen this is the story of Neil Armstrong, the First Man to set foot on the Moon. Focusing on the years between 1961 and 1969, the film follows Armstrong’s life and the sacrifices he made to complete one of the most dangerous missions in history, on NASA’s Apollo 11. TAKING STOCK

Using his failed attempts at creating profitable stock footage, a film-maker reflects on the absurd, mundane and funny side of being trapped inside your own head as an out of work self-employed freelancer. REFUGE

A homeless woman seeks retribution after being displaced by the arrival of a future civilisation seeking refuge from global warming and war. A brief by powerful sci-fi meditation on migration, resistance and culpability and a tour-de-force of homemade special effects. Simon Bishopp has worked as a documentary camera operator for the BBC before setting up as a self-shooting director and editor. This year’s Festival might be over, but we’re planning to keep offering you the chance to enjoy top documentaries from some of the world’s best film-makers until we’re back in 2019. After a fantastic reception during the Festival I’m delighted to be bringing back the Bafta-nominated Nae Pasaran in November, as well as showcasing the Michael Moore’s Farenheit 11/9. There will be more to come in early 2019 and we’ll also be announcing the dates for the next Central Scotland Documentary Festival.

NAE PASARAN In 1974 a group of workers at the Rolls Royce plant in East Kilbride showed their support for the people of Chile by refusing to carry out repairs on engines for Hawker Hunter planes - grounding half of Chile’s Airforce. The Scottish workers never know the impact of this four year boycott: it was an act of conscience and solidarity against Pinochet’s brutal dictatorship. An eccentric revision of Robert Louis Stevenson’s literary classic Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. There is a small revolution going on in the world of wine as a small group of enthusiasts are choosing to create their product using organic or natural methods of production. While there are more than 3000 wine growers in France, less than three percent of them have chosen environmentally friendly farming practices to protect the living character of the wine. Documentary film-maker Bruno Sauvard has followed the revolution over a year, from the harvest to the bottling, revealing a rising global movement for taste and sustainability. Cheers! Marius Petipa’s fantasy, set in legendary India, tells the tale of a temple dancer and the prince who loves her but marries another. The famous, moonlit ‘white act’ – The Kingdom of the Shades – is a corps de ballet highlight, as multiple images of the prince’s lost love haunt his mind. TROILUS & CRESSIDA Troilus and Cressida swear they will always be true to one another. But in the seventh year of the siege of Troy their innocence is tested, and exposed to the savage corrupting influence of war, with tragic consequences. Virtuoso percussionist Evelyn Glennie collaborates with RSC Artistic Director Gregory Doran to create a satirical futuristic vision of a world resounding with the rhythm of battle. Cervantes’s story of the bumbling knight Don Quixote has inspired countless artistic interpretations. Marius Petipa choreographed this sparkling ballet about the encounters of the man from La Mancha and his faithful squire Sancho Panza. At its heart are virtuoso roles for the lovers Basilio and Kitri. Carlos Acosta chose this joyful classic for his first production for The Royal Ballet.
