PRING HAS SPRUNG again. With that rebirth, we are recreating the LaSalle College International Vancouver student magazine and rechristening it “Unlocked.” Graphic design students contend with learning a lot to now from vast arrays of software to design principles to technical tasks and techniques that were once the realm of specialists. The idea of this project is to tie all that knowledge together with content relevant to young adults and produce something that is readable and entertaining. This worked fairly well in the past – under the names Selfish Magazine, Line and Sinker, and Macro Magazine – despite the lack of writers or journalists “on staff.” This issue of Unlocked is no exception: It looks great and contains interesting articles – Books, facts, music, travel, food and movies all represented here. Enjoy. – Daryl Askey

cience Fiction, Humor, Romance Novels, Horror, Thriller... Doesn’t matter! I’m the kind of person who likes to read every kind of books and more those that you have no idea where it’s gonna end. I’ve always believed that a book is the perfect opportunity to live a different life, have problems that are not yours, fall in love with different characters, travel around the world, or living in an alternate world. It’s amazing what a book can teach and what pleasant it is to be lying in your bed, with a cup of coffee and a good book that will help your mind to fly. I have read many books but this time I will speak only of three that have blown my mind. My most recent acquisition is “The Analyst” and I can not stop reading it! Those books that envelop you with the character and stress you with their problems are the best, and I’m in that kind of situation right now. I invite you to consider reading these books that I am sure you’ll love. Do not wait for the movie to find out what will happen!

MUSICIANS

AND BANDS YOU HAVE TO SEE LIVE

Meet som e of of the city ’s most talented m usicians

ith the Vancouver music scene on the rise, it’s about time we put a few talented local musicians in the spotlight. If you’re already dreaming about the Summer, and you love music, then local concerts and festivals have probably crossed your mind at some point. With so many, it can sometimes be difficult to decide which ones to attend to and which artists to see next. The good thing about local music is that it’s local; you don’t have to travel very far from home, and a lot of the time, shows are free or cost very little. If you haven’t already, be sure to check out these five Vancouver-based bands and artists next time they’re around town.

1

Dan Mangan

Juno award-winning Vancouver Folk musician, Dan Mangan, recorded his first EP ‘All at Once’ in 2003. A couple years later, he recorded his first album ‘Post Cards and Daydreaming’. Mangan produced his second EP shortly after, called ‘Roboteering’, containing songs from Mangan’s forthcoming album Nice, Nice, Very Nice. Five months after the release of his second EP, Nice Nice Very Nice was released, including Mangan’s popular songs “Sold”, “Robots” and “Road Regrets”. Dan’s most recent album ‘Oh Fortune’, was released in September 2011. Awarded “Artist of the year” in 2009 and again in 2012, there is no doubt that Dan Mangan is as talented as he is humble. As far as live performances go, you might catch Dan Mangan playing shows in various places around Vancover this Summer. Dan Mangan enjoys touring, but he is always happy to perform in his home town.

2

Said The Whale

Said the Whale is a five-piece indie-rock band, formed in Vancouver in 2007. They released their first EP that year, but re-released it in 2008, as an LP ‘Howe Sounds/Taking Abalonia’, which included nine additional songs. The group includes singer and guitarist, Ben Worcester, Tyler Bancroft (guitar, vocals), Spencer Schoening (drums), Nathan Shaw (bass), and Jaycelyn Brown (key boards). Said the Whale won the Juno Award for New Group of the Year at the 2011 Juno Awards and releases ‘Little Mountain’ the same year.

3

The Belle Game

This indie-pop-rock band is quite a delight to see live. The Belle Game formed in Vancouver in 2009, and currently consists of five members: Adam Nanji, Andrea Lo, Alex Andrew, Katrina Jones, and Rob Chursinoff. So far, The Belle Game has produced and EP, ‘Inventing Letters’, and two albums, ‘Sleep to Grow’ and ‘Ritual Tradition Habit’. They performed at the Summer Live festival in Stanley Park in 2011, along with all of the other artists on this page, and were participants in the Peak Performance Project.

4

We Are The City

We Are the City is an experimental, Canadian, progressive-rock band with a very unique sound. The band members include singer-keyboardist Cayne McKenzie, drummer Andy Huculiak, and guitarist David Menzel. Many of the songs included on their first album ‘In A Quiet World’, such as “Astronomers”, were written by the band members while they were still in high school. They later produced and released an EP, “High school”, and won the top prize in the 2010 Peak Performance Project. This band is absolutely spectacular to see live, as I’ve been to more than five of their shows, and haven’t once been let down. Their stage presence and their ability to put on a great show is phenomenal.

5

Hannah Georgas

The cute, red-headed pop-rock singer, also known as Hannah Georgas, has been drawing local attention since the release of her first EP ‘The Beat Stuff” in 2008. Her full length album, ‘This is Good’, released in 2010, and includes hit songs “Chit Chat” and “The deep end”. she toured with Kathleen Edwards, as a part of her band, and produced her second full-length album ‘Hannah Georgas’ in 2012.

Y EYES IN

BARCELONA Some memories and recommendations about my city.

armer weather, people talking louder, no lines to wait for (just be the first and you will be fine), and my luggage coming to me on the conveyor belt. This is what my tired eyes could see after 15 hours of traveling from Vancouver scaling to Frankfurt and then, finally, Welcome to Barcelona! After meeting my family and my friends, I decided to have a walk alone through the tiny streets in the old area, my favorite one. The first thing that you can feel is that there are a lot of people around you – where ever I look, I see people talking, walking fast, skating, tourists taking pictures, nervous cars trapped in the traffic jam, motorcycles blowing the horn … but the most important thing is the architecture because it reminds me of my childhood. The first picture in the next page is one of the photos that I took on a weekday morning around 11am in the Born area. In a couple of days after I went to have a beer in l’Eixample of Barcelona (part of the center area) with one of my best friends, Simon Pascal (“Una abraçada des de Vancouver”).

W

e went to La Cervesera Artesana where they have home-made beer. It is a very cool place to go and it is not known to tourists yet! The photo down here was taken while we were walking there, in Rambla Catalunya. Then, we met with more friends in el Born (an old area in the center) and we enjoyed some of the delicious tapas, which you can easily find there.

D

uring an evening I went to take some pictures in Passeig de Gràcia (The main street). Everything was quiet during the night while people were hurrying home and the cars trying to catch all the green lights. These are some of the pictures that I took.

Recommendations

I

f you come as a tourist to Barcelona, I recommend the famous places like La Sagrada familia, El Parc Güell, La pedrera, El Camp Nou, and many others. In addition, I strongly recommend you to walk in the heart of the old area called El Barri Gòtic; have a coffee in a Cafeteria (Not Starbucks please); buy bread in one of the many bakeries that you will see and, if you can, eat some jamón (Spanish ham). If you want to come during the summer, first of all buy sun cream, and then go to the beach at least for one day. The one that we have in the city is not bad, but of course you can find way better things in the north of Catalunya like “la costa brava”. My last recommendation is that if you are interested in art, go to Fundació Miró, Museu picasso, Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC), Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA). I think that the most general one where you will find most of the things is the MNAC.
