“W
e’re all worm bait waiting to happen. It’s what you do while you wait that matters.” This may seem like a fairly morbid and graphic quote by country singer / mystery writer / Texas indie politician, Kinky Friedman, but it’s a reminder that we’re not here too long, and so we might as well enjoy life. In geologic time, of course, we exist for a fraction of a blink of an eye. I remind myself of this once in a while so that a) I’ll get on with what I want to do, and b) I don’t take everything too seriously. So it goes with this issue: See what the “staff” has been up to during their school-year in the Student Portfolio feature; travel to Finland, France and the Cherry Blossom Festival; and enjoy the always-informative Did You Know department. – Daryl Askey

Cherry Blossom Let´s celebrate together the power of the blossoms. It’s appreciating the beauty in life that makes life worth living. The underlying purpose of the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival is a simple one embracing all citizens of all ages. “We are blessed to have these trees and the
more closely we look at them and the more we learn about them, the more enjoyment they give us. “ says Linda Poole, Festival Founder and Director. The first Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival was held in 2005 and until now The festival continues making people have fun with
this beautiful and amazing Japanese culture. The Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival runs April 4 to 30, with events throughout the city including free umbrella dance lessons, the Sakura Days Japan Fair and a free guided bike tour of blooming cherry trees in Vancouver.
VanDusen Botanical Garden was the place where one of this great festival took place on 6th and 7th on April. Flowers, food, kimonos, pictures, laughs and fun was what adorned this beautiful place with people from all over the world gathered to celebrate this great feast.
Inspired by the age old Sakura festivals of Japan, the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival uplifts spirits in the city, while the ephemeral nature of the blossoms remind us all to take time now to celebrate life.

Y EYES IN FINLAND My first impression and recommendations about Finland. 18 Unlocked Magazine Issue #2
arrived in Finland in January. I remember opening the main airport door to take the bus and thinking to myself … “Oh my god.” It was 4pm, already night, and everywhere I looked was white. I was so surprised with the situation. It was so hard at the beginning for me to adapt, but it was an awesome experience. We had the chance to go to St. Petersburg, Stockholm, Tallin and the most awesome place I have ever been in my life, Lapland. After living there for five months I can say two important things that people may not know. First of all when I was there I always had the feeling that everything works so well, like a perfect machine. They have excellent organization with the hospitals, social help, educational system, transparency with the politicians and etcetera. The second observation is that the people are so nice. They are known to be impolite, shy, bored … but the important thing is that in general they are good people. This is something that I have just seen in that country.

or example, I lost my keys in a bar and someone gave them to the barman so I just got them back. One of my friends lost his mobile phone in a club, and he found it on the wardrobe because someone gave it back. Those little details that make a difference with other countries. To sum up, Finland is a beautiful and unique place. It is excellent to go there in the winter to disconnect and get inspired, and gorgeous in the summer with all the lakes and green landscapes around.

MUSIC NEWS “IN THE SPOTLIGHT” Of Monsters and Men, Half Moon Run, Alt-J
O
f Monsters and Men (top, right page) will be playing a highly anticipated, sold-out show at the Orpheum Theatre on may 12th, with Half Moon Run (center, left). Of Monsters and Men is a six-piece Indie-Folk/ pop band, from Iceland. Their discography includes an EP, entitled Into the Woods and My head is an Animal, which features “Little Talks”. Their musical style has been compared to indie groups, such as Arcade Fire, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, and The Lumineers. Half Moon Run is a Canadian indie-rock/ indie-folk band based in Montreal. Their debut album, Dark Eyes (released in 2012) includes popular singles “ Full Circle” and “Call Me in the Afternoon”.

nother band “in the spotlight” this week is British Indie-Rock quartet, Alt-J. The band originated when Gwil Sainsbury (guitarist/bassist), Joe Newman (guitar/vocals), Gus Unger-Hamilton (keyboards) and Thom Green (drums) met in 2007. Since then, they’ve released their debut album An Awesome Wave (May 2012). Alt-J’s music has been catagorized under multiple genres, such as folk, rock-bass, hip-hop beats, trip-hop, atmospheric and quirky indie-rock.

he anual Squamish Valley Music Festival, which takes place in early August is a multi day event, which features local and international artists. This year’s line-up features Queens of the Stone Age, Dan Mangan, Young The Giant, Childish Gambino, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Vampire Weekend, The Matinee, and Band Of Horses. Dear Rouge, winner of the Peak Performance Project 2012, and finalists, Jordan Klassen and Dominique Fricot will also be performing.
