healing GARDEN Design Studio [Academic] 1st Semester 09-10 Graduate Freehand + AutoCad + Photoshop + Illustrator Instructor: Annaliese Bischoff Western Massachusetts Hospital (WMH) was established in the year 1910. Owned and operated by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Department of Public Health, WMH is a 100 bed long term medical and specialty care hospital. There is a Program Committee to implement a healing garden in commemoration of this 100 year history with a theme of “A walk through history.”

WMH healing garden

Area of the site is about 12000 sft (or 1100 square meter ) The main building protects the site from the summer and winter wind. The site faces parking lot and forest. The main users of the new garden are patients and staff. The new garden is a part of WMH’s 100 year anniversary. Perspective view of the current condition of the site

CONCEPT

BOND is the concept of this project This concept will be reflected in the following ways: 1, The bond between people and nature – Sensation: Smell, Hear, Feel and See. 2, The bond of spaces in the site – Design pattern. 3, The bond between history and future – Materials recycle.

GARDEN & house Design Studio [Academic] 1st Semester 09-10 Graduate Freehand + AutoCad + Physical Model Instructor: Joseph S.R. Volpe This studio is to design a garden and a house for a client living in Amherst. The site locates at the north of a busy road. And the soil is very well drained. The challenge of this design is how to create a quiet garden and retain most of the existing plants. Meanwhile, the client wants us to consider combining the wash line with the garden.

The physical model - studio assignment

This is a quarter scale physical model which represents the idea of my design. Physical model is the best way to observe and modify space during design process.

Central Green space Design [Academic] 2th Semester 07-08 / Undergraduate Freehand+Photoshop+Cad+Illustrator+Sketch up Instructor: Kaili Zhang

The 2.2 hectare central green space locates in RIPED (Research Institute of Petroleum

local layout

Exploration & Development). It is the largest green space in this area. The task is to change the original place into an active one to meet the need of the residents nearby.

The original green space was built in 1958. Several obvious problems have occurred to this site which has been used for almost 50 years. Unhealthy trees and abandoned buildings bring a scene of desolation. The flat plaza and the conservative layout of the surroundings have resulted in a

site

boring space feeling. All of these factors have made the site a vigorless place. Thus, the aim of my design is to add vigor into the site.

Pattern The current layout of the buildings, roads and trees strictly follows a conservative pattern which is made of several vertical lines. People live in such a pattern every day. Their visions, actions and imaginations follow the pattern subconsciously. The key of my design is to add vigor into this place by breaking the old pattern.

Breaking

The new pattern can break the old conservative one and provides interersting vision and spatial sensations.

1.Dense Tree Zone: Along with the retained original trees, the evergreen trees and deciduous trees in this zone provide a completely isolated spatial feeling. 2. Sparse Tree Zone: The relatively fewer trees that have higher under branch height and the slightly bulged terrain in this zone provide a half-isolated spatial feeling. 3. Lawn Zone: The large lawn with a few bushes provides an open spatial feeling.

Adding Vigor

The new pattern of my design brings visitors interesting vision and spatial feelings that are different from the old one. The abandoned buildings are put down and its construction materials are used for making two sunken plazas. The new green space has several squares and plazas that vary in size and elevation. Unhealthy trees are removed and various new trees are planted.

spacial construction [Personal] 2nd Semester 07-08 Undergraduate Physical Model Arranging the terrain is like playing a flat paper, mountain is raising parts of the paper, basin is lowering other parts of the paper. This task is to make a special construction model which is abstracted from mountain and basin and discuss the different spatial sensations they can provide.

I. One piece of paper with lattice on it.

II. Rise and lower parts of the paper.
