healing garden [Academic] 1st Semester 09-10 Graduate Studio Freehand + AutoCad + Photoshop + Illustrator + Sketch Up Location: Westfield, MA Instructor: Annaliese Bischoff Western Massachusetts Hospital (WMH) was established in the year 1910. Owned and operated by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Department of Public Health, WMH is a 100 bed long term medical and specialty care hospital. There is a Program Committee to implement a healing garden in commemoration of this 100 year history. This studio is to propose a design to meet the hospital’s need.

This is a memorial path, some important stories will be written on it. It is made of recycled concrete from the original site.

The pergola around the main building has created a transition from the building and the garden as well as a place for vines to live.

This studio is to design a garden and a house for a client living in Amherst. The site locates at the north of a busy road. And the soil is very well drained. The challenge of this design is how to create a quiet garden and retain most of the existing plants. Meanwhile, the client wants us to consider combining the wash line with the garden.

ARBOLEDA CLUB HOUSE GREEN ROOF [Professional] 2011-2012 / Office of James Burnett Vectorworks+Cad+Indesign Location: Monterrey, San Pedro, Mexico Role: Project Manager Assistant Project Manager: Dillon Diers Club House is located in the center of the whole site. It will served as a model that shows the high quality and design aethetic of the whole Arboleda project. The Club House will be built in early 2013. The two wings of the Club House will have two roof gardens. Those gardens not only provide resting area but also utilize rain water and help to cool the building in summer time. Benches, water features as well as canopy trees will create comfortable environment for visitors.

station landscape design [Professional] Summer Intern 2010 / AECOM D + P Photoshop+Cad+Illustrator+Sketch up Location: Tianjin, China Role: Assistant Landscape Designer Project Manager: Matt Chu; Jane Huang The old industrial port of Beijing is being redeveloped as a new city center southeast of central Tianjin City, and linked to the capital city and the Bohai Gulf shore by high-speed train. The Tianjin New Binhai Master Plan details a comprehensive infrastructure system permeating a mixed-use district of high-rises, and open spaces. The terminal station designed by SOM will become an icon of the new city not only because of its unique outlook, but also because of this importance in transportation, its size and location. The landscape design round the station tries to echo its significance and provide unique departing and arriving experience.

An small artificial lake is designed to the west of the station as a transition from the station to the entry plaza as well as a mirror to reflect the building.

CONCEPT The concept of this design focuses on the circulation, in order to guide people to the gigantic station, the circulation follows an eclipse pattern which centers at the station. In this way, the landscape plays a supporting role to the architecture harmoniously.

arboleda mixed use develop [Professional] 2011-2012 / Office of James Burnett Vectorworks+Cad+Indesign+Rendering Management Location: Monterrey, San Pedro, Mexico Role: Project Manager Assistant Project Manager: Dillon Diers Envisioned as a mixed-use development, Arboleda will be a premier model for sustainable development in San Pedro Garza Garcia, Latin America's most prosperous suburb serving as an important corporate center in Monterrey, Mexico. The master plan will create a new urban center on a 26-acre site next to the Campestre Golf Club with dramatic views of the Sierra Madre Mountains. Renderings are supervised by me. Intense comments were provided during rendering process. Thanks to the rendering firms: Bezier in China and Gabriel in Agentina Arboleda offers a diverse variety of site programming. Residents will live in three towers and smaller scaled villas in the residential area and two midrise apartment buildings in the commercial district. This lively, walkable district for business and entertainment will also include office towers, office gardens, restaurants, stores, cafĂŠ bistro, performance pavilion, a hotel and cultural center. The club house will link the commercial and residential zones and will be an amenity for all. Highlighting the projects' emphasis on sustainable design, Arboleda will be compliant with LEED for Neighborhood Development, a system of design which integrates the principles of smart growth, urbanism and green building.

A At the core of the project, the leafed shaped park serves as a significant outdoor space; providing a distinct open space and a rich experience for the public and residents.

Club House offers an adult pool and a children's pool with cabanas and sliding structure that create various recreation possibilities.

1.8m tall hedge is designed around the pool area and children's playground for security consideration.

B Continuous tree allee emphasises the "leaf concept" of the park and provide shade in summer. On street parking spaces are created for resident to drop or pick up friends from the park.

The continuous tree allee reinforces the "leaf concept" starts from the north public park. A playground and a dog park is designed for recreation considerations. On street parking spaces and pedestrian crosswalks are provided for people to access the park easily.

The West Garden Office level 3 roof garden provides a relaxing environment with lush landscape for business meeting, office lunch, waiting and other possibilities during working hours.

A high-end restaurant is located in the center of the site. Outdoor dinning terrace is designed to the south of the restaurant with wood decking, water feature and modern movable tables & chairs. 1.25m tall hedge imbraces the terrace and provides soft separation between terrace & the Public Park.

Pedestrian friendly access is a huge concern. Tempary on-street parking spaces are created along the building. An auto court is designed at the south of the building. Pedestrian crossings are placed at the intersections for easy access to the building.

An VIP valet parking & wating area is designed to the north of the restaurant. The underground garage entry ramp next to the waiting area is hidden in a lush planting area.

A children's playground is placed in the north center of the Residential Area to provide multiple play structures for children to climb, swim, sit, jump and overlook from the top of an iconic treehouse. B. To the north of the play ground is a dinning terrace with a pre-cast fireplace and a simple, modern trellis to give shade to the families that are enjoying a lunch with their kids and friends. Two waterfeatures are designed at the north edge of the terrace that create white noise to the whole site. C. A resting terrace is placed on top of the garage entry to create possibility for gathering, waiting and siiting. Wood benches are placed along the centural pedestrian under canopy trees that allow people to take a rest after a walk.

The high-density plan was developed according to key principles of sustainable design: providing accessible public transit, weaving a new generation of green spaces into the city, and promoting clean water. (Sources from SOM) The terminal station designed by SOM will become an icon of the new city not only because of its unique outlook, but also because of this importance in transportation, its size and location. So the landscape design round the station must echo its significance.

Official Landuse Proposal Green open spaces are scattered, not connected, not systemetically considerred. This is not beneficial to stormwater management, habitat protection as well as pedestrian circulation.

Water Water system is located at the east and south edge of the site, not very well incorporated into the site.

Transportation Pedestrain path system is not considerred into the overall transportation system wihich makes the site not pedestrian friendly.

Proposed Landuse Proposal Proposed urban land use tries to provide solutions to the challenges mentioned above. Adding more green open spaces to make them connected. Rerouting the water system and consider pedestrian system in the site.

bamboo therapy [Competition] 2010 / IFLA Student Competition Photoshop+Cad+Illustrator+Sketch up+Indesign Location: Xi'an, China Partner: Kuang Xin Instructor: Jack Ahern, FASLA In this project, we proposed a remediation system for purifying the moat of Xi’an city. This proposal creatively applies traditional methods of using bamboo and bamboo products. By innovatively integrated the system with the historic moat, a sustainable “green infrastructure” is established, the value and spirit of the site are cherished and a pleasant environment is provided for people to visit and play. The objective of this project is to change the traditional way of dredging the waste and refilling the moat with new water and providing a new sustainable way of dealing with the pollution in the moat. In addition, this project also celebrates the unfailing value of traditional Chinese culture – featuring the bamboo. By these methods, the project ultimately responds to the competition theme: Harmony and Prosperity – Traditional Inheritance and Sustainable Development.

The Moat and The Region Because of fast development and population growth, the use of water has increased significantly. The underground water level has dropped from -6.93m in 1983 to -12.65m in 2003 and almost -19m in 2009. In conclusion, a clean and nice moat would be a great treasure for people. A creative approach that can make the moat sustain itself is strongly needed.

The City Xi'an is the capital of the Shaanxi province in China and it is a sub-provincial city. Xi'an has been the capital (under various names) of some of the most important dynasties in Chinese history. The city is the eastern terminus of the Silk Road and home of the Terracotta Army which was made during the Qin Dynasty.

THE MOAT Xi'an’s city wall and moat was initially built during Tang dynasty (618-907) and was extended during Ming dynasty (13681644). The wall stood 12 meters tall, 12-14 meters wide at the top and 15-18 meters thick at the bottom. It covers a length of 13.7 kilometers with a moat of 14.7 kilometers. The moat has an average width of 27.6 meters and an average depth of 6.5 meters. Initially designed as defensive structure, the moat now acts as a heritage site combined with flood storage, water storage and sewage discharge function.

Pollutants in The Moat The moat was once a pleasant place for people to visit and play. However, in recent years, the water in the moat has become heavily polluted because of rapid urbanization and enormous growth of population. The stinky smell from the dark water keeps people away from the moat. According to a recent survey, there are three kinds of pollutants in the moat: domestic sewage, industrial sewage, and stormwater runoff. Domestic sewage is the wastewater of daily life - a constant source of pollution. Industrial sewage is generated by industrial production processes, adding specific chemicals and compounds to the water. Stormwater runoff flows from rooftops, paving and other urban surfaces, accumulating various contaminants along the way. Generally speaking, industrial pollution and stormwater are the most significant sources of pollution.

Bank Treatment On the upper bank, there are bamboo plantings that remediate sediment from the moat, while the lower bank will be a bamboo charcoal purification system. The whole system is powered by bamboo gas in order to achieve a renewable energy objective.

Dam Improvement We use bamboo charcoal on top of the dam, taking advantage of gravity to filter the polluted water flowing over the dam. The mesh structure could buffer mass wastes and collect them into sediment tank, while soluble contaminations will be easily captured by the bamboo charcoal.

Besides the benefits provided by those products, the bamboo family is also one of the most effective plants for phytoremediation. Bamboo can take up the contaminants from water and purify it through a biofiltration process.

By means of a pyrolysis process, bamboo will be transferred into five different products(indicated by the diagram):1) Bamboo charcoal – an environmentally functional material that has excellent absorption properties; 2) Bamboo vinegar – a special liquid that can purify polluted water; 3) Bamboo tar – a special liquid that can detoxify pathogens; 4) Bamboo gas – for providing heat; 5) Waste gas.

Urban Farm

We envision an American fair rooted in reality. Human societies, like the planetary ecosystem of which we all constitute one part, exist in a state of dynamic non-equilibrium. This balance is maintained only through constant motion and competing forces. The vast quasi no-man’s land, industrial waste areas, and paved expanses of stadium parking is NOT a blank slate. It is instead a record of 250 years of American trial and error. These careless spaces at the confluence of the Delaware and Schuylkill River, were once marshes, low lying wetlands, islands, all vital constituents of an ecological and hydrological systems that connected the Appalachian Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean. This location provided a vital function as a passage for anadromous fishes, like sturgeon, shad, alewife, and striped bass, and it acted as a filter, scrubbing excess nutrients and particulate from the river and tributaries before they flowed into the bay.

The last 200 years has been a period of rapid and destabilizing demographic, political, and cultural change. The vast migration toward the city, the ensuing construction of national identities, and the restructuring of cultures have all followed on a wave of successive and overlapping industrial revolutions. The history of the world’s fair, like the larger history of all modern centralized planning, is the history of swiftly industrializing societies, booming populations, and the desperate attempt of nations, municipalities, and planning agencies, to summarize these changes, to present a coherent image of the modern world, and to craft a normative vision of some future equilibrium toward which all this madness is proceeding.

Colorful awnings suspended from interstate soften interior space. Highway provides shelter from rain. Runoff from highway is guttered and directed to raised ornamental gardens for infiltration. Food stalls and vendors line the interior space beneath the interstate.

Pavement is ripped out and replaced by a meadow and a series of pervious walking paths. Stadiums are used for the largest festivities. Parking lots are consolidated through parking structures. Aggregate from the removal of pavement is mounded against the garages, covered in topsoil and planted.

An aggressive reforestation program establishes a young forest of native hardwood species, growing around the ruins of abandoned industry and discarded housing. Ancient naval vessels, become museums, exhibition space and temporary hotels Existing structures are repurposed as exhibition space and public sculpture. Pearl River Delta Greenway System is a 1,690km long greenway project which will be developed mainly in Shenzhen and Guangzhou. The PRD Greenway system was initiated in 2010. BLY design institute is one of the appointed local design institute to generate design work of the project. Because of a solid relationship between me and Mr. He, the CEO of BLY. Professor Jack Ahern and I were invited to give a series of lectures to the designers, government officials as well as all other related consulting firms.
