WHEN I STARTED OUT IN THIS BUSINESS MY VERY FIRST EMPLOYER SAID TO ME, “JON, THE JOURNEY IN THIS FIELD WILL BE FILLED WITH UPS AND DOWNS. WHEN IT’S HOT IT’S HOT, AND WHEN IT’S NOT IT’S NOT. BUT IF YOU HAVE THE PASSION FOR COMMUNICATING WITH THE WORLD, YOU’LL DO JUST FINE AND IN THE END, YOU’LL LOVE EVERY MINUTE OF IT.” THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO VIEW MY JOURNEY. MACVIDEOGRAPHY MACVIDEOGRAPHY PROVIDES VIDEO AND STILL PHOTOGRAPHY SERVICES FOR A VARIETY OF BUSINESS AND CONSUMER NEEDS. AS A STARTUP COMPANY ENTERING A HIGHLY COMPETITIVE INDUSTRY, THEIR PRIMARY GOAL WAS TO ESTABLISH A PROFESSIONAL AND MEMORABLE IDENTITY THAT SHOWCASED THE QUALITY OF THEIR WORK AND THEIR TECHNOLOGICAL EXPERTISE. A NUMBER OF COLLATERAL MATERIALS NEEDED TO BE DESIGNED AS WELL AS A WEBSITE AND SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING STRATEGY. THE VISUAL LOOK OF THE COMPANY NEEDED TO BE CONSISTENT IN ALL FORMS OF MEDIA AND PRINT GRAPHICS RANGING FROM VIDEO TITLES, CALLING CARDS, APPAREL AND BUSINESS COMMUNICATIONS.

MacVideography Brand Identity The essence of the company is represented by the lens of a camera. The typography was chosen for it’s contemporary feel and font name “techno.”

Brand Collateral The logo had to be used in a variety of applications including offset lithography, vinyl stickers, silk screening and embroidery. All corporate stationery, invoices, estimate confirmation forms and rate sheets maintained the graphic standards established from the beginning.

Social Media Marketing A “Pro” account on Vimeo as well as a channel on YouTube were set up for viewer access to video content. A Facebook business page was established for fans which included blog posts on each company project. MacVideography Website Due to budgetary constraints, a simple website was designed using Apple’s iWeb to display the company’s sample projects. Links to off-site servers were used to optimize website performance.


Design Considerations Consistent layout, color and typographic style were vvvmaintained across all pages for more efficient communication and navigation


UNIVERSITY OF RIVERSIDE UNIVERSITY OF RIVERSIDE IS A PRIVATE INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY LOCATED IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA THAT OFFERS VARIOUS ACADEMIC PROGRAMS FROM THE BACHELOR TO DOCTORATE DEGREE LEVELS, THROUGH THE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AND THE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION. THE INSTITUTION CONDUCTS 4-6 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES PER YEAR AND WANTED TO CREATE AWARENESS BY HAVING THEM FILMED, EDITED AND DEVELOPED INTO DVD SETS TO SUPPLEMENT THEIR MARKETING STRATEGY. THE CONFERENCES WOULD REQUIRE TWO FULL DAYS OF FILMING ALONG WITH INDIVIDUAL INTERVIEWS OF EACH PARTICIPANT TO BE CONDUCTED AFTER THEIR PRESENTATION. FOOTAGE WOULD

Global Participation These two day international conferences feature presenters representing countries from the Middle East, Africa, China, India and Asia. All presenters were filmed with DSLR cameras and lenses with their final lectures edited and color corrected in Final Cut Pro.

THEN BE EDITED, COLOR-CORRECTED AND SYNCED WITH HIGH QUALITY AUDIO FOR FINAL DELIVERY. GRAPHICS WOULD BE CREATED FOR DVD AUTHORED INTERFACES AS WELL AS DISC LABELS AND DVD PACKAGING AND WOULD BE DUPLICATED FOR SALE TO THE PARTICIPANTS OF THE CONFERENCE. CONFERENCE ATTENDANCE WAS INCREASED AS A RESULT OF THE PROJECT ENABLING THE UNIVERSITY TO SUCCESSFULLY BRING AWARENESS TO GLOB-

URBAN LIVING MAGAZINE URBAN LIVING MAGAZINE IS A PUBLICATION THAT TARGETS RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES IN THE INLAND EMPIRE OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. IT’S PRIMARY GOAL IS TO BRING AWARENESS TO THE COMMUNITY THROUGH CONTENT AIMED AT BUSINESS, EDUCATION, ARTS, ENTERTAINMENT AND CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS. ONCE THE BRAND WAS CREATED, MOCK-UPS WERE DESIGNED TO SECURE ADVERTISING INVESTMENTS FROM THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY. A CONTEMPORARY LOOK WAS REQUESTED IN ORDER TO REFLECT THE CHANGING DEMOGRAPHIC OF THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES.

Magazine Nameplate Typography was chosen to reflect the modern “urban living” of a once rural area. Bold strokes with modern serifs characterize the forward-thinking attitudes of a developing community living in the 21st. Century.


Design Strategy High quality photography was a main consideration in the cover designs of each quarterly publication. A consistent look in photographic style was needed to maintain brand awareness to an audience new to the publication. SAN BERNARDINO VALLEY COLLEGE & DISTRICT UPON COMPLETION OF THE NEW ART FACILITIES AT SAN BERNARDINO VALLEY COLLEGE, THE DEAN OF WERE LOOKING TO RE-DESIGN COLLATERAL MATERIAL FOR THE GRAPHIC AND WEB DESIGN PROGRAMS. BROCHURES, BUS AND BILLBOARD ADVERTISING AS WELL AS A SUPPLIMENTARY DEPARTMENTAL WEBSITE WERE DEVELOPED TO REVITILIZE THE VOCATIONAL ARTS PROGRAM AT THE SCHOOL. VIDEOS WERE ALSO PRODUCED TO HIGHLIGHT ARTISTS SHOWCASING THEIR WORK IN THE NEWLY CONSTRUCTED ALAN AND CLARA GRESHAM ART GALLERY. IN ADDITION TO GRAPHIC DESIGN AND VIDEO SERVICES PROVIDED FOR THE ART AND HUMANITIES DEPARTMENT, I HAVE SERVED AS AN ADJUNCT INSTRUCTOR FOR COMPUTER GRAPHICS AND DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY COURSES FOR SEVERAL YEARS.

Proposed Website Proposed website design for the Graphic Design and Web Design Certificate Program. The website would provide quicker access to course requirements and provide a clearer understanding of vocational outcomes.

Bus Tailgate Advertisements Bus tailgate advertisements as well as community billboards containing the new Valley College logo promoted the importance of education in one’s future. Several ideas were generated using the headline “Your Future Starts Here.” In addition to taligate ads, bus shelter ads and course catalog covers were also designed to supplement the campaign.

Spring 2013 Catalog Proposed photography for the cover of the Spring 2013 schedule of classes. The photo depicts the ethnic diversity of the campus student body.


BOEING | REBUILDING TOGETHER EVERY YEAR BOEING, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH REBUILDING TOGETHER (ORANGE COUNTY) PROVIDE VOLUNTARY SERVICES TO HELP REBUILD COMMUNITIES IN SURROUNDING ORANGE COUNTY AREAS. A VIDEO WAS CREATED DOCUMENTING THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE PROJECT AND HOW, WITHIN 10 HOURS, A FAMILY’S LIFE WAS CHANGED FOREVER. THE VIDEO WAS CAPTURED AND EDITED AS A “PRO-BONO” CONTRIBUTION TO THE BOEING CORPORATION AND REBUILDING TOGETHER ORANGE COUNTY. DVD DISCS AND PACKAGING WERE DESIGNED AND DISTRIBUTED TO ALL VOLUTEERS OF THE PROJECT.

DURING THESE YEARS I HAVE WORKED WITH MANY TALENTED PROFESSIONALS IN THE FIELD OF PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEO THAT HAVE TAUGHT ME HOW TO RECOGNIZE THE CRAFT OF CAPTURING AND EDITING HIGH QUALITY IMAGES. ALL OF THE STILL IMAGES AND VIDEO PRESENTED IN THIS PORTFOLIO ARE IMAGES I HAVE CAPTURED AND EDITED FOR VARIOUS CLIENTS. JON & KARLIE PHOTOGRAPHY MY CURRENT PASSION LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY HAS ALWAYS BEEN A LOVE OF MINE EVER SINCE MY FATHER LET ME SHOOT WITH HIS SLR FILM CAMERA BACK IN THE DAYS. ALTHOUGH I’VE BEEN A GRAPHIC DESIGNER ALL MY LIFE, BEING A PHOTOGRAPHER HAS EXPANDED MY SKILL SET AND ALLOWED ME TO CAPTURE IMAGES AS THEY RELATE TO THE PROJECTS I DESIGN . I HAVE ALWAYS BELIEVED THAT A PORTFOLIO SHOULD CONTAIN SAMPLES OF YOUR BEST WORK AND THESE DAYS, TAKING PHOTOS IS WHAT I HAVE BEEN ENJOYING MOST. MY FAVORITE PASTIME IS TRAVELING THROUGH THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA AND PHOTOGRAPHING EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING ALONG THE WAY. The Sausalito Houseboats As you walk the docks around the houseboat community you realize that you are experiencing art in living form. A haven for artists and painters in the 60s, the houseboat community continues to thrive and absolutely amaze people like me. Canon 70D 70-200mm 2.8


PLATT COLLEGE (LOS ANGELES, ONTARIO, RIVERSIDE) LIVING THE DREAM VIDEO TO HELP BOOST ENROLLMENT IN THE VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS PROGRAM A VIDEO WAS DEVELOPED FOR THE COLLEGE WEBSITE. THE VIDEO SHOWCASES THE SCHOOL’S PAST GRADUATES GIVING TESTIMONY TO THEIR SUCCESS IN THE GRAPHIC DESIGN INDUSTRY AS A RESULT OF THEIR EDUCATION AT PLATT COLLEGE. SEVERAL GRADUATES WERE CONTACTED WITH INTERVIEWS BEING ARRANGED AT VARIOUS LOCATIONS. THE THEME OF THE VIDEO FOCUSED ON HOW THESE EXPLATT COLLEGE STUDENTS WERE NOW “LIVING THE DREAM” IN THEIR CHOSEN PROFESSIONS. CREATIVE STRATEGY, SCRIPTING, VIDEO CAPTURE, EDITING AND FINAL DELIVERY WERE ACCOMPLISHED WITHIN SIX WEEKS OF THE INITIAL PROJECT LAUNCH.

BRANDING | IDENTITY THE KAWA MON “MON” IS A JAPANESE EMBLEM USED TO DECORATE OR IDENTIFY AN INDIVIDUAL OR FAMILY. IT CAN ALSO BE COMPARED TO THE TRADITIONAL EUROPEAN FAMILY CREST. THE KAWA MON (MY LAST NAME) IS SYMBOLIC OF TWO CROSSED HAWKS FEATHERS WITHIN A CIRCULAR SHAPE. THE HAWK IS THE EMBODIMENT OF BOLDNESS AND BRAVERY WHILE THE CIRCLE EMCOMPASSES THE FEATHERS AND KEEPS IT INTACT. WHEN I WAS IN COLLEGE, I WAS GIVEN A ROUGH PENCIL SKETCH OF OUR FAMILY “MON” FROM MY UNCLE. FOR ONE OF MY GRAPHIC DESIGN ASSIGNMENTS IN COLLEGE, I RE-DESIGNED THE SYMBOL AND CONTINUE TO USE IT TODAY.

Design Applications The Kawa Mon has always been the focal point of my graphic identity. From business cards, invoices, proposals and watermarks, the symbol has been prominent and recognizeable. The logo was designed in black and white and remains as a single color mark that represents simplicity and strength. The mark was drawn by hand and then constructed in Adobe Illustrator.
