Founded in 1887, it commissioned many of history’s most recognizable fonts, including Gill Sans and Times New Roman. Today, it has a library of more than 10,000 fonts and owns the rights to prominent type families such as Helvetica, Univers, and Frutiger. In recent years, it has focused on bringing legible type to an increasingly global world. In 2016, it unveiled the results of a partnership with Google to bring hundreds of alphabets--many rare or even extinct--online through a family of open-source typefaces called Noto. Noto can be rendered in serif or sans serif across eight weights, totaling more than 300,000 glyphs. By Google’s estimates, it is 10 times larger than the nearest universal typeface, Arial Unicode, and is the text displayed on every Android and Chrome device around the world.
