The goal for this project was to design a lake house for a client who is looking to build in Lake Ozark, Missouri. The client gave a $750,000 budget, including the home, dock, and a pool. Some additional tasks for this project were to find a price for a comparable swimming pool, find a price for the boat dock, subtract the cost of the lot, then determine how many square feet the home can be with the money that is left. As the designer on this project, I was a consultant and provided renderings for a possible home design.

C L I E N T

This client is Jill Wilder - a young, wealthy, real estate developer from Kansas City. Jill is single and really likes to entertain. She will travel between Kansas City and Lake of the Ozarks on the weekends, and will usually invite 3 or 4 of her best friends, and sometimes their children, to join her. Jill’s dog is her favored companion and is looking for specific spaces for her. One of Jill’s requests was to have a wine cellar in her home.

C O N C E P T

In order to create a relaxing space to escape the business of the city, I used natural tones and soft fabrics with a pop of color to ensure comfort and the ability to unwind. With the clients desire to entertain, providing each space with opportunity for conversation layouts in furniture and the relationships between each space.

HISTORIC P R E S E RVA T I O N

P R O J E C T

Fall semester of my senior year, I took a historic preservation class where we spent the first half of the semester doing research on preservation and different techniques of preserving historic buildings. We studied buildings in America and other foreign countries that are considered historic landmarks. We especially spent time looking at UNESCO World Heritage Sites and the National Register of Historic Places.

C L I E N T

Lytton Building is at risk of demolition due to the proposed redevelopment of the southwest corner of Sunset and Crescent Heights Boulevard. In 2014, the Townscape Partners proposed a plan to replace the current buildings with 229 apartment units and 65,000 square feet of commercial, retail, and restaurant usage. In June of 2018, the Supreme Court of California denied the hearing petition filed by the Los Angeles Conservancy that ended the legal efforts to stop the demolition of the Lytton Building.

C O N C E P T

In order to bring attraction to the Lytton Building we are creating a space that highlights the historical features of the building while updating the furniture and materials of the interior to meet the standards of modern design. In addition to providing a funcitonal and inspiring space that allows for creativity in the environment of Los Angles. We have designed “Chapter: 1” as a cafe that includes a bookstore for authors to present their work. Along with selling books to the public that share the history of Hollywood’s architecture and culture.

SITE DEMOGRAPHICS - 8150 Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles California - Locally known as the “Sunset Strip” - 21.75 miles long - Life arount the Lytton Building: - Night & Comedy Clubs, Music, Theatre, 27 Restaurants, 7 Cafes, and shopping centers - Population: - 36,854 - 30.5% of people are ages 25-34 - 33.1% of people are ages 35-54

S I T E H I STO RY - Built in 1960 by Kurt Meyer - Postwar Era design, unique to Sunset Blvd. - Built to serve as the office branch and headquarters for Lytton Savings and Loan Association - Economy was recovering from the depression and war in the Postwar Era, increasing credit and banking needs - Optimal time for a bank to be built - Bank was designed to attract a new demographic of customers by using modern architecture T R EAT M E N T A P P ROAC H Our treatment approach for the Lytton Building is rehabilitaiton, bringing the building back to its original attraction. We want to preserve as many historical features as possible but also see the need to update the building to meet the changing culture of Los Angeles. 15

C H RO N O LO G Y O F D E V E LO P M E N T - Not many changes have been made to the original structure of the building - A few additions have been made, including: a storage and electrical building, ATMs, Reflecting pool, and parking lot - Window glazing on the first floor has been replaced - Furniture and interior design features, by Adele Faulkner, have been removed, including the globe lights that were originally in the building E VA L U A T I O N O F SIGNIFICANCE The period of significance for the Lytton Savings Bank with significant trends in the banking and finance industry was when it was known as the Lytton Savings and Loan Home Office (1960 -1968). Savings and loans were in high demand in the postwar era. This created the need for a building such as the Lytton Building. The building was a significant piece of architectural work in 1960 at the date of construction. It was a model of mid-century modern architecture in Hollywood. The building won the Los Angeles Beautiful Certificate of Excellence in 1962 for architectural landscaping.

For this project my group and I redesigned the Landscape Architecture building on campus at Iowa State University. While preserving the exterior integrity of the building we updated the interior with a focus on multiculturalism, new ways of teaching and learning, and student well being. Our clients are all students, staff, and faculty members who are in the English Department and the Intensive English and Orientation program.

C L I E N T

Our client is the students, staff, and faculty members who use the Landscape Architecture building at Iowa State University. The students are members of the Intensive English Orientation Program where they are learning English as a Second Language.

C O N C E P T

As international students learning English as their second language, our main focus for this project was to design a space that induces high-focus learning. We did this by implementing spaces ranging from one on one to full size classrooms, providing areas for different learning styles. Collaboration is an important part of learning, especially when learning a new language, because it promotes confidence and self-esteem. Color coding was an important piece of our project as it is used as wayfinding and the base of our aesthetic. We utilized the primary colors as they are universally known and are the most identifiable. In order to ensure the students have the best opportunity to learn we provided them with the updated technology and resources.

My group and I were tasked to remodel the Century III Mall in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania into a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC). Healthcare facilities across the country need to prioritize communal aspects and wayfinding to get each resident to feel welcome, comfortable, and recognized in their place. In doing so, the issue of social isolation can be further avoided incorporating accents of nature and more youthful generations creates a feeling of normal, everyday life that the residents deserve.

Our client needs a modernized healthcare facility with a focus on occupants experience for the aging population of the United States. The goal of this space is to create a Continuing Care Retirement Center to positively contribute to the wellbeing, health, and independence of the inhabitants.

With a focus on our residents independence, our continuing care facility will sustain the ability to maintain a healthy and happy mentality. Giving the option to move throughout the facility from public to private areas will instill a sense of self-sufficiency. By providing adequate wayfinding, residents can freely navigate the space to their preference. Through natural elements, warm tones, and a variery of spaces, the facility will be engaging and refreshing.

P RO C ES S

Research Results: - Residents spend most of their time in their private apartments. Second most amount of time is spent in living room

- An open floorplan with automatic doors and elevators works more efficiently

- Recreational activites like watching television and listening to the radio are done in multiple smaller lounges rather than one large lounge

- Residents gained more independence by being able to freely walk around

- A flat outdoor area allowed for a walking path surrounding the building. Buildings within a community allow for residents to see out to the community

- Lounge was used for social interaction, short distances between each lounge - Floor to ceiling windows enabled natural light
