PORTFOLIO MADARA
S A B A N O VA
Hello, my name is Madara Sabanova and my motto of life is
“ DREAM BIG, WORK HARD ” I come from a small country, Latvia, and I focused my education on art and design. I studied at the Art & Design high school in Riga and I graduated as a fashion menswear designer at the Heriot-Watt University, United Kingdom. My design is expressed by creating unique artworks in the form of tailoring-shaped street-wear clothing with an edgy twist. The aesthetic of my design is mostly represented by the use of a minimalist colour palette in greyscale and pastel shades with contrasty colours usually employed as accents in collections. Clean silhouettes and attention to details are key elements that characterise my “handwriting”.

ICEBOUND Icebound means frozen. Something that time can not affect. This collection is made for the Autumn/ Winter 2016/2017 season. The main concept for this collection is to create timeless garments that would promote ethical and slow fashion. Garments that one could adapt to upcoming trends. Garments that are timeless. This collection is addressing sustainability issues while emphasizing on slow fashion; its main inspiration is water and its ever changing nature. Then, as the research developed, I looked into Mongolians and their lifestyle in the wilderness, the natural environment. I seek inspiration not only from their lifestyle and culture but also their religion which is based on Buddhism. Outfits give a minimalistic vibe that reflects the Buddhism philosophy. This feeling is created by incorporating a colour palette inspired by Mongolian landscapes. Starting from warm shades of grey to the cooler shades of ice blue. The main message of the collection is to slow down, breathe and enjoy the time one has on this Earth by cherishing everything without taking it for granted.

The“Beyond Sky”collection is inspired by meteorite rain and star maps. Magnificent moments that last only a fraction of a second. That is, the way I understand and interpret sensations, beautiful moments of lifetime. In this collection I used digital prints, fabric manipulation and laser cutting. The print pattern is hand drawings that are inspired by the December star map. The pattern is made of fine line drawings to evoke a frigid feeling. As for fabric manipulation, the main idea was to bring stars to the wearer. I wanted to create 3D stars to make a person feel like he is wearing a part of the havens. To give the feeling that you can actually reach the untouchable. As I used different textures and techniques in my design details, I wanted to keep it simple and minimalist in colours. The colour palette is a classic combination of black and white with soft pastels in prints. The monochrome colours are easy to mix and match and are always in trend. To sum up, the design concept for“Beyond Sky”is all about comfort and simplicity in the main garment patterns and outstanding details that gives personal twists and make the wearer stand out of the crowd. Dare to be real, to be yourself.

DIVISION
collection Division is one of my first collections. Its concept was to create unique garments that would look great at any situation. For instance, they can be worn as formal wear as well as casual outfits. One outfit for all situations. The base for this collection comes from classic-cut white gents shirts that have been transformed into a more interesting cut and shape. The inspirations came from nature bugs (for the silhouette) and trees (for the prints). As one of my first collections, this is one of my favourites as I learned a lot and I pushed my boundaries to achieve the final look.

One of the projects I developed as exercise was a diffusion of my Icebound collection meant for the H&M brand. This is a womenswear collection, created to target a wider range of consumers in the age range of 20-40 years old. They love minimalistic colour palettes and clean cuts, but, at the same time, they are looking for interesting details that would incorporate more edge through the pre-existing classic look. The colour palette is based on a mixture between cold and warm winter tones. The collections inspirations are Mongolian mountains during in winter time and the ever-changing nature of water. Outfits are created to be functional and practical, but also aiming at a certain femininity in the design. Garments are mostly loose, from shirts that have slightly draped elements to wide flowing trousers with an elegant touch. As it is expected by an Autumn/Winter collection, chunky knit cardigans and coats are also included. This collection employs prints that resembles soil cracks.
