ABSOLUTELY FAN-TASTIC! Celebrities don’t need to fight their own battles anymore; they leave it up to their much-loved supporters to act as their mouthpiece. We highlight some of the biggest crews going

THE NAVY This group keep it 100% for Rihanna – good times and bad. Mess with her, you mess with them

TEAM BREEZY Equally so, Chris Brown’s supporters have remained loyal throughout his most turbulent times

THE ANGELITES This heavenly group hold it down for UK singer Angel. At present, they’re diligently pushing his debut album

THE JLSters This crew was left heartbroken when British boyband JLS announced that they were to split after five years

THE BEYHIVE Team Beyhive is ready to slay any naysayers at the slightest hint of disrespect directed at their Queen B aka BeyoncĂŠ

TREYZ ANGELS Made up of mostly women who have fallen for that bright, white smile, silky-smooth vocals and face to match

THE FIGHTERS Christina Aguilera’s fan base is named after her hit song. So their name says, so shall they do

THE BELIEBERS Not sure this crew need an explanation, big enough to invade a country, Justin Bieber is in safe hands

THE BARBZ They love all things Nicki Minaj. What she says goes. Simple! She calls her male fans ‘Ken Barbz’

LAMBS / THE LAMBILY Mariah Carey loves her Lambs and the feeling is mutual. You’ll see their many exchanges on Twitter

THE HEARTBEATS Keen supporters of The Voice UK judge Jessie J. The heartbeats are as vital as the name suggests for the UK singer

THE DEACONETS UK actor Adam Deacon doesn’t have to worry about a thing with his Deaconets massive ready to take on any critic

THE RIZZLE KICKERS They back UK duo Rizzle Kicks all the way. Any information you need on the boys, just ask the team

THE DIRECTIONERS Do not cross this team! Many have tried and failed. They have fought many battles for their boys One Direction

THE ALIENS Loyal supporters of former X Factor contestant Misha B, team Alien support and promote the singer’s every move

LIL MONSTERS Another team who have their idol’s back are Lady Gaga’s Lil Monsters. They are diehard supporters and they’re growing by the second

A COVENTRY student pulled off the impossible when he successfully staged a black tie gala in two months. Oluwaseun Bamgboye, the new president of Coventry University’s African Caribbean Society (ACS), put on the Afro Bacchanal event on Saturday, March 23, despite a few hiccups along the way. The glamorous bash held at the Belgrade Theatre, in Belgrade Square, showcased an array of fashion and dance performances, poetry, and music from the university’s Gospel

Rhythms choir. Bamgboye said: “It was really good, better than I had expected. We had a good turnout. The red carpet was great; everyone looked so nice. The second year computer science undergraduate described the period as “crazy, having to coordinate up to 30 acts while conducting his studies. “Being president really tests your friendship, character and patience, and it’s hard getting the balance right with university deadlines, he said.

STANS US rapper Eminem is responsible for the term ‘stan’ after releasing his song of the same name. It was therefore an apt name for his team

UK singer Gamu Nhengu talks to YV’s Dionne Grant about life after X Factor, following her gut and why she’s not afraid to be different

W

ITH A big red flower fixed to her hair and a wideeyed smile to match, Gamu Nhengu stood on TV's most popular stage and won our hearts with her unique rendition of Katrina and the Wales Walking on Sunshine. The 2010 X Factor judges, including Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole, Louis Walsh and Geri Halliwell, were in awe as the aspiring singer worked the stage like a pro. A star had been born and we all knew it, especially Cole who was chosen to mentor the 18-year-old through the judges house segment. And then, in a shock decision, Gamu was axed from the

ITV1 show amid claims that the Zimbabwean national did not have the correct paperwork to progress in the UK competition any further. The subsequent outcry led to claims that racism, not a missing visa, had sparked Cole's decision and incited numerous calls for Gamu to be reinstated. Even today the singer, now 21, says she's still taken back by the response from the British public. “I just wasn't expecting people to be that upset at all,” she says. “It was so overwhelming, I didn't know how to deal with other people being upset for me. What do you say when loads of people come up to you on the street and say, 'You must

be upset because I'm upset!'. It was very overwhelming, but very heartwarming. I'm so grateful for everyone's support.” Gamu, who resides in Scotland with her mum, a nurse, and two brothers, entered The X Factor on a “fluke,” her main aim to garner enough notoriety, which would allow her to save up enough money to study literature and philosophy at university. Further studies had proved too costly prior to founding fame. “I wanted to be a writer and go to Edinburgh University, but the fees as an international student were crazy. I wouldn't feel right letting my mum do that, so I actually went onto The X Factor thinking, 'If I get on the show, some people might see me

and I'll gig around and I'll get some money from it. That was my original thinking.” But after her appearance on the TV talent show, which has launched the careers of Leona Lewis and JLS, the singer was inundated with offers. “When I left the show, there were so many record contracts. I didn't really know where I stood yet in the industry, so I had to sift through everything and find the one I thought I could grow into.” The singer decided on independent label GSound - “ a family-owned, small and very efficient studio in Glasgow”. On her decision to opt for a relatively unknown label rather than the bigger players who also showed interest, she simply says: “They didn't offer me the world. “They were very realistic about it and at that time in my life I was definitely looking for reality. It was close to home and they were giving me a chance to develop, which other labels didn't. [The other labels] were like, 'Once we sign you, we'll release your single in January 2011.' It was very, very fastpaced and the album just wasn't ready.”

But the star, who has spent just over two years crafting the perfect album - a mixture of mainstream pop and R&B, which she dubs ‘Nu-Vintage’, is now ready to release the first taster from her labour of love. Shake The Room, a sassy reoduction to the scene, is peppered with inspiration from eras and musicians past while its packaging remains modern and edgy. “I love the 1960s! I grew up with that era. My mum was a massive fan of Tina Turner. She used to have this cassette in her car and it was always Tina. She would play it everywhere. I didn't appreciate it then, but I appreciate it now. She went on: “Then you have Motown. Motown was like a music factory, they just churned out hits. I loved the way they worked their melodies, the simplicity of their sound, the real LAURYN HILL:

instruments, it was all just so beautiful to me. This is where I want to fit in at that moment.” The singer, who says she's also inspired by Britney Spears and TLC's Left Eye, the latter inspiring her Shake The Room rap verse, says it's her quest to be different while catering to the current generation of music listeners. “I studied business at A-Level and realise that the most important thing to do if you want to market your product is to make it stand out. Music is about wanting to stand out, but being comfortable in your own person, which is very important to me, but not easy in the pop industry.” Shake The Room is released through GSound Records on May 5. Her album A Love Like This will be released on July 15. For more information, follow @GamuOfficial on Twitter

Dear Kat,

I’ve recently found out that I’m pregnant, but I am no longer with my baby’s father. I’m three months along and I haven’t told my ex yet. He has a new girlfriend and I don’t want people to start saying that I’m trying to break his new relationship up by dropping this on him. They only person I’ve told is my best friend (and you, of course) who says I need to share the news with him, but when I’ve tried to call before, he ignored my phone call. It’s not really something I want to leave on a voicemail. I haven’t told my mum either. I’m 18 and know she will flip. Anon

Hi Anon,

If you’re an avid reader of my advice column you’ll know that my answer to most things is communication. If your ex is refusing to pick up his phone, I would advise you to text him and tell him that you have something “VERY” important to speak with him about and it’s in his best interest to call. What other people say is NOT your concern. Understand that your news will shock him and may even anger him, but don’t be put off. Be patient. Explain that you want to keep the baby and ask how he feels about your decision. You need to tell your mum too! Her advice and support will prove to be invaluable during this time.
